SAIL supplied special grade steel for INS Kiltan

Partnering nation’s ‘Make in India’ drive, Steel Authority of India Ltd. (SAIL) has supplied defence grade DMR 249A steel plates for the indigenously built Anti-Submarine Warfare (ASW) stealth corvette INS – Kiltan which was commissioned into Indian Navy. It is the third of the four indigenously built AWS stealth corvettes under project 28 (Kamorta class) to join Indian Navy after sister ships INS Kamorta and INS Kadmatt. SAIL’s integrated functioning across all its Plants has again successfully supplied the required quantity of steel for this significant project. Steel Minister Chaudhary Birender Singh has congratulated SAIL for this feat. DMR 249A is a low carbon micro-alloyed grade of steel with stringent toughness requirement at sub-zero temperature. SAIL developed this warship grade steel Plates for Indian Navy in collaboration with Defence Metallurgical Research Laboratory, Hyderabad. SAIL has been supplying steel for Defence sector for a long time and its steel has been used in various other prestigious ship building projects. State-run Steel Authority of India Ltd (SAIL) sees "product differentiation" as a key strategy to survive in the competitive market, its chairman P.K. Singh said on Friday.

"In the present circumstances, only the best in the class will survive. At a time of high over capacities across the world, product differentiation is the requirement of the hour and we have to match the best in quality, variety, and standards," he said, after visiting its Rourkela Steel Plant (RSP) which boasts of a 4,300 mm new plate mill.

This bill has the potential to capture demand from niche segments and the plant has teamed up with the Defence Metallurgical Research Laboratory (DMRL) and the Indian Navy to develop special grade steel plates for naval requirements. The steel producer said new plate mill along with special plate plant have created unique facilities for the making of special grades steals for defense applications thereby "increasing the capacity of quenched, tempered plates with desired ballistic qualities".

DRDO Signs Deal with JSHL to Manufacture High Nitrogen Steel

Stainless steel maker Jindal Stainless (Hisar) Ltd. has entered into an agreement with Defence Research & Development Organisation under which the government agency will transfer technology to manufacture high nitrogen steel for the defence sector to the company. The deal comes after decade-long joint efforts in research and development by JSHL and Defence Metallurgical Research Laboratory, the DRDO’s research wing, to develop the material. The technology transfer will boost the government’s ‘Make in India’ programme, Minister of State for Defence Subhash Bhamre said. The DRDO works under the Department of Defence Research and Development of the Ministry of Defence. Reforms in the defence procurement policy have given impetus to indigenisation and this initiative of DRDO and JSHL will pave the way for further acceleration of locally developed technology, Bhamre said. Jindal said the company has all the technology and processes and doesn’t need to invest in technology as of now. High nitrogen steel is corrosion-resistant, has better holistic capabilities and mechanical properties and is better than the material imported now, Jindal added.
