Today i was being asked questions for a blog site and here is the question and my answer to the question.
You’ve worked at two different major labels—is your job any different?
Well, every company has a different system, but it’s pretty much the same gig. I try to find talented artists and help them fulfill their dreams by putting out a great product.
What gets the attention of record labels and A&R execs?
Really, it’s all about the music and the buzz on the street or online. That’s what gets our attention and directs us. It’s important to build a buzz. You should do what you have to do to get your music heard. If you believe in what you’re doing and have any talent, eventually you’ll get results. We also do research to find out who is doing what and get in touch with acts to see what’s up.
What qualities do you look for in artists?
I like acts that are unique and have their own perspective. I like artists that are passionate and work hard building their careers and social media footprint. A good work ethic is important to me, because when you get signed to a major label you’re going to work one thousand times harder.
Should Artists contact major label executives directly?
If I were an artist, I wouldn’t go after the major executives; I’d want them to come to me. You should use all your resources, let your music touch people and get a response out of them. Then build on that. Do those things and labels will come to you. When the buzz gets loud enough, we’ll check you out.
What important lessons should artists learn?
Artists should learn how to take constructive criticism and use it in the right way. They should enjoy the journey and understand that some decisions are made—or not made—due to timing. If they get passed on, they need to know that it’s not always about them or their music. Sometimes the time just isn’t right for the label or A&R rep to make a decision. And, artists should realize that luck is often part of the process.
Would you develop an act?
It depends. Major labels generally prefer artists that have their act together and are pretty much developed. However, if I absolutely love what the artist is doing, I might take a chance and work with them.
How important is an act’s live performance?
It can make or break a deal. It’s important for artists to put in the work and become great performers and build a fanbase. But, it’s not easy—with some artists it could take a while.
Is there a courting period before you offer an artist a deal?It depends on the artist and their team. Sometimes it’s love at first sight,Other times you want to make sure everyone can work together, and that could take some time.
Do you search the Internet for new artists?
I like YouTube and SoundCloud. I can gather a lot of information there. I also check out social media, but I’m not swayed by numbers or likes. I look at engagement between an act and their fans. If that’s not there, the numbers mean nothing.
Are you looking for anything in particular?
I want to find great artists that create great music, of any genre. If they have the skills, I can help them reach their goals. But, they have to work at it too. Signing a record deal is like entering a partnership. Everybody must do their job and be involved to make it happen.
What would stop you from signing an act?
If an artist is lazy, doesn’t self-promote and things that everything is on someone else shoulder – it’s a total turn off. Additionally, if an artist doesn’t have a clear vision about who they are and what their music is about, I’ll look somewhere else

I had no idea but once things started to catch on i was thrown off. But then had to put myself in that mindset of well. If this is where it's going lets capitalize and make the most out of this. It was all for the love. Then the business side started to launch. How did you come up with the single Life of the Party?: this track was a track that really did just hit me. The saying happened was, I started seeing where this was going and being in my hometown. I went from a kid noone paid any attention to. I actually used to get bullied and no-one really cared. But once the skating I do took off as well as the music and people would reach out to me, message me, or see me in public and would get excited seeing me and would give me free stuff from places id go out to and people actually wanting me around. I felt like I became the life of the party. So it was perfect timing. What is your future goals for success? I want to tour around the world. Not only performing shows, but skateboarding. I love skating, so to travel and see new places experience new cultures would be insane. If you could ever do a callabo with any artist who would it be and why? If I could collab with anyone. It'd be J.cole, Logic, Dizzy Wright, Wu tang clan, Redman, Danny Brown, Drake, Kendrick, and the list goes on (laughs) What advice can you give other who may follow your foot steps? Keep going. You'll find every reason to stop. There will be a lot of things to happen to "Justify" why you'd want to quit. But don't. If you feel this is really your calling. Don't stop. Push man Push! Lushy Banton Reggae Mastermind Lushy Banton has been bringing his electrifying mix of dancehall music and sing/rap style of innovative performance to audiences for over two decades. Hailing from Kingston, Jamaica, Lushy grew up entrenched in musical influences-whether the sounds of Michael Jackson or the dancehalls where his father promoted dances throughout the Grants Pen area. These early introductions exposed him to-not just Reggae and the behind-the-scenes aspects-but also live performance techniques from some of the region's top acts. With such examples, he spent his youth perfecting his chatting craft and putting in intense workouts to the mic. Having easy access to one of Kingston's finest sound systems, the renowned Stereo One, based in his native Grants Pen area, his practicing helped him hone a unique stage presence and vocal recording prowess. Building a name off his riveting style, his presence began to grown within the community as a rising star. Such word-of-mouth exposure led to producers courting him, until he landed in a studio with well-respected Reggae producer Striker Lee. From the collabo came Lushy's early track, 'Gal Uno Sweet,' on the compilation album entitled "Bam Bam" (released in England). While recording for other producers, he continued enhancing his own lyric writing and performance, until landing on notable labels such as the legendary Stone Love Records and indie Adex Records. While with Adex, he commuted between his native Jamaica and Los Angeles, eventually settling in New Jersey. Once his music moved toward heavy Reggae rotation, he successfully began charting with hits such as "Brown Eye Girl", "Oh No" (with Wyclef Jean), "Mate Hear Say," "Think Me Done," "So Much Trouble," (sampled with Bob Marley) and "Exercise". Besides Wyclef, he has also worked with numerous other major talents such as Junior Reed. These landmark singles solidly placed Lushy Banton into the lexicon of dancehall performance masters. Since arriving in the US in his early 20's, he has grown in both his music as well as a sense of maturity-as seen in his lyricisms on current socio-political subjects. States Lushy about his new direction, "I write now more about what I'm surrounded by. Songs to help wake up the youth and I say to them-you need tenacity and to believe in yourself. If you tell yourself you can do it, chances are you can. I attribute that to my longevity so far. Not letting anybody tell me I can't make it. I've proven wrong anybody that every said that. So go hard or go home." After working with other labels he formed his own in 2008, Watsitnot Entertainment, and sits at the helm of fresh projects that are galvanizing the world. In honor of the unprecedented US presidential election campaign, Lushy launched his most acclaimed track, "Obama" with an accompanying video-taking both radio and TV by storm. The timing further cemented Lushy in the worldview and garnered numerous accolades such as a 2009 nomination for Best Obama Song in the very prestigious IRAWMA (International Reggae & World Music Awards) in New York. Focusing this motivating mindset on the world community, he delivered a compelling look at a controversial subject, immigration, in his single 'The Undocumented/Message". Following on the heels of the heavily aired song is another hot button topic-turned-to-music, "Black Lives Matter," whose thought-provoking lyrics deliver just the message youth need. ITunes (and all other retail sellers of music) keep the release before a growing audience of fans with both the single and a forthcoming video set for YouTube, joining a lineup of other Banton hits. Lushy has, since his first forays into the industry as early as 1990, never missed a beat with live performance opportunities leading to tours and events such as the annual Festival of Life in Chicago. He finishes touches on what may be a subsequent album release, with a new single launch "Who's My Daddy". Meanwhile his compelling messages about contemporary issues resonate with the heart and mind-not to mention gives you the rhythm and show he is most acclaimed for. Lushy Banton's music continues to bring meaning and message to those trying to get the groove of life today.

Kanye West's Outrageous Political Comments After Supporting Donald Trump Kanye West used his stage to trumpet his own political agenda when he shockingly revealed he would have voted for Donald Trump. The "Famous" rapper detailed his policies for a 2020 presidential run on Thursday night, in which he noted he would be "a different type of president." West also commented on racism in America to the dismay of many fans, who wrote messages like "I don't even know you anymore" after his diatribe. Yeezus did however make clear that though he would have voted for Trump (if he voted at all) — it does not mean he doesn't believe that black lives don't matter or that he is not a supporter of women's rights and same-sex marriage. While some of West's remarks were rooted in seriousness, it wouldn't be a Kanye West rant without some bizarre commentary. Here are the most outrageous comments the rapper made: 1. "I hope they build the wall, I hope they get rid of them all," West reportedly freestyled during his San Jose, Ca. show. Referring to Trump’s agenda to build a wall on the U.S.-Mexico border to curb illegal immigration. 2. "Black people, stop focusing on racism. This world is racist, okay? Let's stop being distracted to focus on that as much. It's just a f---ing fact. We are in a racist country. Period." 3. West reportedly said as a black man he felt persecuted for supporting Trump, but now that he's president-elect, he feels vindicated. 4. "I got some ideas about the way we should connect our ideas and we should use opposite parties, Democrat, Republican ... it should be the collective ideas that are used to run the country." 5. He watched the presidential debates for entertainment admitting: "I'm a human being too, I have feelings, I liked the debates, I'm a guy and a rapper, I'm a nonpolitical rebel, the debates were entertaining." 6. "Sometimes things that you think are bad have to happen in order for change to f---ing happen." 7."Rappers are philosophers of our now, celebrities are the influencers of our now, just look at the president, he wasn't in politics and won" 8. "Neither candidate would fix racism in this country," West said before ended the show and walking off stage. Ye be on his spaceship ….. Taking Off ………. SOURCE

11 #1 Hits Over 30 Soundtracks songs. Now fabulous & fresh Freddie Jackson arrives with a love movement. For urban contemporary listeners and music critics alike; there is no doubt which R&B artists deserve a place among the greatest of all time. Freddie Jackson mastered the art of chart domination during the mid to late 80's, and today continues proving his distinction as one of the Top 50 Greatest R&B Singers (Billboard 2017). The proof is in the phenomena: a Billboard chart resume that boasts 18 songs in the Top 10 with 10 songs rocketing to #1, a 3x Grammy Nominee, and an American Music Award winner. The Harlem native's star first appeared on the horizon in 1985, after releasing his debut album, Rock Me Tonight (Capitol Records). Before that, life appeared ordinary enough behind the scenes with a word processing job, train rides to do session work, and backup singing gigs throughout New York nightclubs. Despite a brief stint at the start of the 80's on the west coast, as lead with the R&B band Mystic Merlin, it was back on native soil that Jackson would launch his career. Once again, his gospel-bred musical connections would play a key role in his destiny. Even while singing backup for Melba Moore, it was fellow church member and friend Paul Laurence at Hush Productions, who joined to shape Jackson's own turn at center stage. As a talented record producer and songwriter, Laurence realized enough was enough and pulled Jackson from behind both a typewriter and other acts; penning him a hit with the title track for what would become Jackson's debut album-"Rock me Tonight". Even after shooting to #1 and sitting there for six weeks, Jackson wasn't done hitting the charts. He quickly won urban contemporary radio's heart with, "You Are My Lady"-a second straight R&B topper that became his highest ranked single on the Pop charts-hitting # 13. He quickly followed up with, "He'll Never Love You (Like I Do)" and "Love Is Just a Touch Away", while sending them both straight to R&B Top Ten. The debut LP reigned over the R&B album charts, going platinum. His phenomena persisted after a duet with Melba Moore, "A Little Bit More" shot to #1 R&B, and he backed it with yet another platinum-smash aptly titled, Just Like the First Time, in 1986. This is when Jackson appeared musically magical with the success of the album's singles, charting: "Tasty Love", "Have You Ever Loved Somebody", and the soother, "Jam Tonight"-all hitting #1 as if he planned it. Even, "I Don't Want to Lose Your Love" went to #2. During the tail end of the 80's, on into the 90's, what appeared to be a slowing of Jackson's hits on the charts, was actually a shift in his music's placement-a word Jackson says is the key to not just performance but life. Radio listeners still got albums such as the 1988, Don't Let Love Slip Away-which introduced hits of the singles, "Hey Lover", "Nice and Slow", and "Crazy (For Me)". By 1990, Jackson's, Do Me Again, an album with the hit track, "Main Course", topped at #2. He released 1992's, Time for Love, with the soul remake,"Me and Mrs. Jones" (later a soundtrack addition). By the time he signed with RCA/BMG Records in 1993, he was making worldwide appearances at a record pace. He even gave fans a Christmas album, before leaving to record Private Party with Scotti Brothers Records in 1995. There, the next album's single, "Rub Up Against You" rose to the Top #25 R&B. While critics questioned the change of chart-topping agenda, fans saw, as much as heard, the hit maker in film and on TV in tandem with his radio releases. From the start, the pattern of simultaneous media and music appeared, such as with the syndicated special, "The 1985 R&B Countdown", hosted by Whitney Houston to the following year playing himself and singing, "He'll Never Love You (Like I Do)" on the daytime drama, "One Life to Live"-Jackson was a constant presence. By 1988, he joined other world-renowned legends in celebrating Freedomfest: Nelson Mandela's 70th Birthday Celebration. This kicked off a subplot to his life story-that of a popular singer pulled at a superhuman pace between the stage and the big and small screens. When cross-referencing his music with the movies and TV, one clearly sees Jackson stayed in heavy demand. Once he seized the era and the airwaves with a number of hits, even film and TV audiences couldn't get enough. Not limited to recording ballads aimed at adults; over 30 motion picture and television soundtracks-such as kid's favorite, All Dogs Go to Heaven-feature his acclaimed vocals as well. Not content with his music alone, producers and directors spent the next decade tucking Jackson into scenes with his hits-from popular sitcoms like Family Matters, and The Golden Girls, to feature films. After appearing with his song, "All Over You" in the low budget horror film, Def by Temptation in 1990, he went from light camp to serious cinema with King of New York (his song "Dream On" included) alongside heavy-hitters like Wesley Snipes, Laurence Fishburne, and Christopher Walken. In 2000, he eased into the new millennium still grooving up broadcasts as he performed his classic, "Rock Me Tonight" on Love & Basketball. By the following year The Jazz Channel Presents Freddie Jackson aired, highlighting his greatest hits over the decades. Despite all the cinematic adulation, he felt an even greater need to stand by his music recording-despite the changing tides in R&B over the years. When Hip-hop's popularity began to shoulder in on the genre's position, a few artists like Jackson wisely rolled with the new trends-even throughout his seemingly silent, post #1 hit domination era. While a few of his industry peers began crossing over to Pop charts, he took the change from a different approach by blending his vocal prowess with various newly emerging R&B and even Hip-hop talents. From the 1991 EPMD/Tracie Spencer tracks, "Love Me Down" and "Main Course" to Mikki Howard/Da Youngsta's 1992 releases, "I Could Use A Little Love (Right Now)" and "Can I Touch You", as well as the 1995 Brownstone/Kut Klose jams, "Come Home II Us" and "Rub Up Against You". Having made numerous rounds of major TV shows-from Top of the Pops, Oprah, to the Soul Train Awards, and even writer/performer on The Tom Joyner Sky Show; with several hit videos of his own-he is at once familiar to fans. His music is kept current over three decades even via the digital age, such as his hit, "Have You Ever Loved Somebody" being placed in the video game, Grand Theft Auto IV, in 2008. Eventually, like many major artists in the Internet dominant age, Jackson created independently produced projects, gaining more control over both his life and his career-while still charting songs in the Top 100's including, Life After 30 (#81 R&B, 1999), It's Your Move (#45 R&B, 2004), and Transitions (#26 R&B, 2006). By 2010, he released the single, "I Don't Wanna Go", from the Barry Eastmond produced, For You, an album off the Entertainment One Music label. In 2012, the TV series Unsung featured The Life of Freddie Jackson, who in turn gave a new audience of fans yet another single two years later with Climax Entertainment entitled, "Love & Satisfaction". His current release-Love Signals-offers longtime fans and new listeners alike just that-a melodic offering of love in a multitude of styles. From the orchestral openings to the instrumental driven collaborations with master musician Gerald Albright on "Hold Me Tonight"-each song is a pulse of passion and light. "All I Wanna Do" will surely become the new anniversary anthem, while his most global track to date, "Save The Babies" asks this tumultuous era's most pertinent question: 'Who is going to save the child?' Coming from a master crooner, Love Signals aims to be a beacon sent out by one of R&B's brightest and ever-evolving stars-proving fabulous Freddie Jackson is still fresh enough for today. Geffen Records has had several incarnations over the years, and another one begins today: the storied record label is relaunching with veteran A&R exec Neil Jacobson as president. The move was exclusively announced to Billboard by John Janick, chairman of Interscope-Geffen-A&M. "Geffen Records has always represented the true entrepreneurial spirit of the music business," Janick said in a statement. "Neil's commitment to artistry, his drive, and his ability to see and create new opportunities for our business make him the perfect choice to take the helm at Geffen, a label that is such an important part of the collective legacy of our company." Jacobsen has been with Interscope for some 15 years, working in international publicity and marketing before moving over to management and A&R. Over the years he's signed LMFAO and DJ Snake, managed Will.I.Am (and also ran his label), Robin Thicke and hitmakers Jeff Bhasker (Fun., Kanye West, Mark Ronson) and Emile Haynie (Lana del Rey, Father John Misty, Lady Gaga, Kid Cudi). "I've been telling people for 15 years that one day I wanted to run Geffen," Jacobson tells Billboard. I always thought Geffen is a special label and David Geffenis a special person. And with Nirvana and Guns N' Roses you're talking about my favorite artists of all time." The label's initial roster includes Avicii, DJ Snake, AlunaGeorge and several developing artists, including L.A.-based outfit B00ty. Geffen was founded by its namesake, David Geffen, through Warner Bros. in 1980. The executive had enjoyed spectacular success through the first half of the preceding decade, as his Asylum label became the focus of the Southern California soft-rock that dominated FM radio during the era (its roster included the Eagles, Linda Ronstadt, Jackson Browne and many others). In 1975 Geffen left to pursue an unsuccessful stint as a vp at Warner Pictures and then had a cancer scare, but returned full-force to the music business with his eponymous label. Its first signings were two of the biggest artists of the time, Donna Summer and John Lennon, the latter of whom was murdered just days after the release of Double Fantasy, his album with wife Yoko Ono. The label became one of the most successful of the '80s, with hits from both established artists -- Elton John, Don Henley, Peter Gabriel, Joni Mitchell -- and, as the decade progressed, hard rock -- Whitesnake, Guns N' Roses, Aerosmith. In the '90s it became an alternative haven, with Nirvana, Sonic Youth, Beck and others. Geffen sold the label to Universal in 1990 for $800 million, and became a billionaire when Universal was purchased by Matsushita the following year. Geffen remained with the company until 1995, although his day-to-day involvement had long since diminished. In 1999 the label was essentially annexed by Interscope and no longer operated as a freestanding unit, although it has been revived occasionally over the years. In the mid-2000s it absorbed several artists from MCA's roster (Mary J. Blige, Blink-182, Common, The Roots) and again in 2011, when it was relaunched as a hip-hop imprint headed by Lil Wayne manager Gee Roberson, although the following year he transitioned to lead Blueprint, a different label within Interscope. A rep for the label told Billboard at the time that new leadership for Geffen would be announced the following year, and now, albeit a few years behind schedule, it has. by Jem Aswad BILLBOARD

Janelle Monáe Puts Down Kim Burrell's Homophobic Rant At The Golden Globes. "Moonlight" actress Janelle Monáe further distanced herself from Kim Burrell Sunday night in the wake of the gospel singer's homophobic rant. Speaking backstage at the Golden Globes, Monáe said she proudly appeared on "The Ellen DeGeneres Show" last week to promote her other movie, "Hidden Figures," after Burrell — who sings on the film's soundtrack — was disinvited for her hateful speech. "I'm pro-love. I was very supportive of love," Monáe said while standing with the cast and producers of "Moonlight," which won for best dramatic movie. "At the end of the day, I think that no matter where you come from and who you love, you deserve to have a right to the American dream and to also have your story told," she said. "I just think anybody who is representing hate is a part of the problem, and I hope that we can learn from each other and be more empathetic of one another. And I hope that we can remember, at the end of the day, we all bleed the same color, she said. Burrell performs with Pharrell on the "Hidden Figures" lead single, "I See A Victory." Monáe and Pharrell wasted no time blasting Burrell last week when a video showed her making homophobic statements in a Texas church went viral. "The perverted homosexual spirit, and the spirit of delusion and confusion...has deceived many men and women," Burrell said. Monáe thanked DeGeneres in an Instagram post for "standing on the right side of history." SOURCE

Mike Tyson Confirms He's Training Chris Brown For Fight Against Soulja Boy Mike Tyson went on Instagram and confirmed he’ll be training Chris Brown for his highly anticipated boxing match versus Soulja Boy, which could go down at Las Vegas’ MGM Grand in March. The 50-year-old former heavyweight champ posted a brief clip, in which he takes aim at Soulja Boy. “So it’s confirmed. I just got off the phone with Frenchy and Chris Brown. I’m training Chris, he chose me as his trainer to take on Soulja Boy,” Tyson says. “And Soulja Boy, what the fuck you talkin’ bout, ‘Only thing I’mma teach him is how to bite somebody’s ear off.’ Yeah that’s right, I’mma teach him every dirty trick in the book to knock you out, ‘cuz I’m not gonna teach him how to run.” For good measure, Iron Mike added the caption, “It’s official. SOURCE
