assorted small town au ramblings
all the hargreeves kids grew up in different houses with their birth moms but still went to the same schools together. lila was a transplant from the burbs and she was dying of boredom her first year there
a small mountain town just feels right. lots of woods to explore, plenty of places to hike- small enough that everyone is close, but spacious enough that it's not suffocating
i can picture some of the boys going hunting when the season comes around. diego would probably get really into it and five would be the best with a crossbow. everyone is down for fishing and screwing around at the local lake, though
speak of, hargreeves family cookouts monthly. everyone brings something and the kids run around while the adults just chill. either hosted by diego and lila's place or at the lake's shitty park tables
Luther is a math teacher at the local middle school (he is so smart. i will die on this hill) and adores his job. all the kids think he's the coolest person they've ever met. Sloane is the geography/history teacher down the hall. they make lunches for each other and spend their prep periods together. their students FREAKED OUT when they found out they were married. he works with the local scout troops over the summers and likes canoeing the best
Diego works with the local fire department (i can't make him a cop i'm sorry) and loves it. got really into axe throwing and wanted to teach Stanley, Grace, and the twins how to do it before Lila vetoed it. deer hunts in the fall, fishes as often as possible. epitome of girl dad, those kids have him wrapped around their little fingers. best bass player in town and avid enjoyer of the local bars' battle of the bands
Allison works with local government. amazing public speaker. lives in the heart of town with Ray and Claire, happier than ever. always the first to volunteer for Claire's school events- coaches for the high school volleyball team and is the best drama coach they've ever seen. surprisingly, loves camping the most out of anyone in the group. points out every constellation (she and Luther compete to see who can name the most) when they're outdoors and makes the best s'mores
Klaus sells the crochet and knit goods they make at local markets/the town festivals. has immaculate reviews on his etsy store. somehow pulls the best thrifting hauls with Allison and Claire. goes to the lake the most out of the group- loves to swim out and relax in the water. doesn't go on the hunting or fishing trips but does know all of the edible plant species they can forage locally. roomies with Ben and has a cat named Tango. keeps picking up DIYs in order to have excuses to visit Dave down at the hardware store
Five is the group cryptid. has a cabin in the woods somewhere. almost a full-on survivalist, bound to actually go feral someday. works with the town's historical society and archives. gets lunch with Herb and Dot semi-regularly. Mr. Pennycrumb accompanies him everywhere, and nobody argues with it. cans his own food and has bees on his property (he regularly leaves jam and honey jars on the others' porches and denies doing so). either the best dressed one at the function or wearing an awful fishing/hunting pun hoodie, no in-between
Ben is a librarian, and a kickass one at that. the best at story hour (his puppeteering skills with the octopus are immaculate) and incredible with multitasking. handles a bunch of finance stuff behind the scenes (diego and klaus are hopeless with taxes, five has almost been arrested for evasion). works on his motorcycle when he has free time and rides down to the valley to visit his girlfriend. presses wildflowers and helps at the community garden
Viktor works at the local music shop, Icarus Records. Luther is his most frequent customer and has probably bought at least half of their stock at this point. he's got more music knowledge than anyone else in town. loves going out on the hiking trails to play at the peaks- it brings him a sense of peace like nothing else. volunteers with the schools to teach music. still in his teenage band with Diego and Lila. visits his mom every week and sits out on the porch with her drinking sweet tea. budding romance with the newest transplant- a recently divorced woman from texas. (her son adores him already)
Lila also works with the historical society, but as the chaotic social media/marketing manager. she gets paid to meme and that's probably her dream career. attends every PTA meeting purely to psych out the other moms. drums whenever she gets the chance, absolutely demolishing everyone at the battle of the bands. chaotic evil driver- she learned with city traffic and assumes it makes her immune to the super windy roads. steals Diego's flannels and denies it
might make a separate post about their teenage years,,,

Sector QT Headcanons!
Cyrus has a crush on an operative named Everleigh/Numbuh 90. He stutters and stammers a lot when he's talking to her.
Paloma is an avid Rainbow Monkey collector and even collects retro Rainbow Monkeys.
Monroe knows all the songs and lyrics of High School Musical, High School Musical 2 and High School Musical 3: Senior Year.
Judy is probably the only kid in the entire world who enjoys eating vegetables (even broccoli if you put some seasoning on it, it mostly doesn't taste like garbage).
Dee sometimes go on solo missions along with the pets of Sector QT. Though during their missions, they have to deal with the Well-Mannered/Wild Kids' pet cats and their team.
Before joining the Kids Next Door, Sector QT made their own little treehouse and tried to help kids in their neighborhood (with very little success).
There was a past Sector QT but after the operatives were decommissioned, the sector hadn't been used since until now. Some speculate that the reason the sector wasn't active might have something to do with a serious incident that happened within the sector. But that's just a rumor....right?
Cyrus, Paloma and Monroe have known each since they were 5 and met Judy and Dee when they were 9.
The kids go to Marble Valley Elementary School.
The Supreme Leader of the Kids Next Door is Numbuh 1,000 who everyone, including Sector QT, admires and adores since he's a pretty big deal in the KND.
Sector QT likes to watch old cartoon shows like from Hanna-Barbera.
Sector QT's other pets involve the hamsters, a Dalmatian puppy named Clue, a Siamese kitten named Pearl, a hamster named Iris, a deer named Deidre, a moose named Tyrone, and three fishes named Ariel, Betta and Captain. They're also Dee's friends and go on animal adventures/missions with him.

TOA Anniversary Munday Post
haha i haven't even been here for a month
Celebrating TOA and the people who contribute to make our group what it is.
Repost, don't reblog. Only fill in what you feel comfortable sharing!
Happy anniversary, TOA! Here's to many more years spent together.
Name: Penny
Pronouns: She/them
Birthday (no year): 8/19
Where are you from? What is your time zone?: I'm from the United States of 'Merica, Georgia in particulary.
How long is your roleplay experience? Uh, outside of Roblox, and a little bit of Amino, I basically have none, so a month!
How were you introduced to roleplaying as a whole? I was introduced to roleplaying when I entered a Big Brother RP amino thingy when I was 12, and I won the whole thing while mascaraing as like double my age. It was crazy back then.
How were you introduced to TOA?: I was looking at Joshua art, and then I stumbled across an old Joshua muse which lead me to TOA. I know it sounds a bit crazy.
Do you have any pets?: I have a dog named Mellow! I will protect him with my life. He is my pride and joy.
What is your favorite time of year and why? (Season, holiday, general period): Favorite season is Fall, favorite holiday is Christmas, and my favorite general period of time is whenever I don't have school.
What is your IRL occupation? I don't have a job at the moment, I am just a simple high school senior.
Some interests and things you like/enjoy? I enjoy coding little games, I like romhacking and just seeing my edits change the game, it's kinda like magic, lol. I enjoy going for walks, and racing other people, I also enjoy sleeping, who doesn't.
What non-Fire Emblem games do you play? Pokemon, Stardew Valley, Wildermyth, Ace Attorney, Smash Bros, Mario Kart, Kirby
Favorite Pokemon type & Pokemon: Water, Vaporeon (NOT IN THAT WAY)
Tell us some funfacts and trivia about yourself! Oh, a fun fact? uhhhhh
How did you get into Fire Emblem? I wanted to know where Marth from Smash Bros came from, so I decided I was going to play Awakening, and now I'm obsessed.
What Fire Emblem games have you played? I have played FE7, FE8, FE11, FE12, FE13, FE17
First & Favorite Fire Emblem games: FE13 was my first, and FE8 is my favorite!
List your 5 favorite Fire Emblem characters across the series! Nooo, I can't choose between my bab- Marisa, Henry, Clanne, Joshua, The 7th Platoon is it's own character right?
Who was the first character ever to make you go “ooh I like this one in particular” and why? Can be any context and reason! It was Clanne when I was playing Engage and got really good growths and he MVP'd like the whole entire game.
Any Fire Emblem crushes? 😳 A certain green-haired woman from a game I haven't even played yet.
If you’ve played (or are familiar with) the following games, who was your first S support? Who would you S support nowadays? - Awakening: My first S support was Anna, and I would probably S support my baby Henry now. - Fates: N/A - Three Houses: N/A - Engage: My first S support was Ivy, but now it's probably Panette.
Favorite Fire Emblem class? Armor Knight
If you were a Fire Emblem character, what would be your class and stats? Would you be playable? I would be a reclassable very flexiable unit, but I would always been just below-average in everything, so just like very disappointing. One speed from doubling, and one attack from killing, but I force that luck will always be in my favor.
If you were a Three Houses character, what would be your affiliation? Yellow Team! Uhm, I mean Golden Deer
If you were an Officers Academy student, what would be your boons, banes and potential budding talent? Boons: Reason, Faith. Banes: Axes, Flying (fear of heights), Heavy Armor, Budding Talent: Bows
If you were an Engage character, which nation would you originate from? Solm! I really love Solm and it's characters, it's like Jehanna if it was cool, and didn't have a queen who died in a pretty stupid way and didn't fight back EVEN THoUGH SHE'S A TRAINED SWOR-
How do you pronounce TOA? 🤔(separate letters, to-ah, other?): T-O-A, I will not accept any other pronouncations.

Old Prey - Chapter Six: Raven
Beau
“Get in the bath.”
He closes the door, leaving me alone in the bathroom. The tub is filled with warm water, and he left new clothes on the toilet. Despite his mood, he added bubbles as if I was a cub. Maybe Soleda liked bubbles.
I put a paw in the water, feeling it dampen my fur and warm my freezing paw. Baths always calmed me down. The feeling of the water on my skin, my body warming up… it was just so relaxing. But it’s hard to relax when you’re in the same house with a lion that’s furious with you.
I undress and step into the bath, wincing at my frostnip. My pads have reddened and are painful when applied pressure. It hasn’t worsened to frostbite but is hell to deal with.
I stare at the ceiling, going deeper into the water. I failed. My one chance to free myself is gone. I don’t know what he will do to me, I fear he’ll hurt me.
The longer I stay here, the more my chance of freedom decreases. Leo will never change his mind about me. He wants to shape me ‘back’ into his beloved, molding me into a completely different identity. Making me forget who I am, who I was.
I can’t sit here and let that happen.
I jump out of the water, quickly drying and dressing myself. I open the door, getting out when seeing he isn’t there. I hurry to the window opening it and feeling the cruel cold. I don’t care if my frostbite turns permanent this time, I just need to get out here.
The sound of an aggravated growl fills my ears. The next thing I knew I was being roughly grabbed by my shoulders and turned around, faced with Leo’s seething expression, teeth bared.
He’s furious.
“You’re trying to escape again,” I try to run off, but he has a tightening hold on my wrist. “You could’ve froze to death, or suffocated yourself in that snow!”
I’ve been so lonely without you, it’s been so hard living my life like this. You make me feel complete,” he lets out a shaky breath. “Yet this horrible thing has happened to you, making you forget all of your memories, every memory of us.”
“No, that isn’t—”
“Your father isn’t a rhino. You aren’t friends with a wolf. You don’t even go to Claws Academy. You went to Deer Valley,” his voice cracks. “I don’t know why this happened. Why did you leave me? Was I too clingy? Did you not like lions? Did you lose interest in me? Did you ever have interest in me?”
I’m the one being held by a violent, mentally unstable lion. But he is the one with tears wetting the fur on his face. He won’t break eye contact with me, looking deeply.
“I-I don’t know,” I try to reason. “I’m not her. I’m Beau Barrese, and I was never in a relationship with you. We’re nine years apart, it can’t be possible that we were in high school together…”
“We’re only two years apart…”
“No.”
“You’re Soleda Anstead, you could’ve been Soleda Santifelon…”
“No.”
“But you look so identical to her, you have to be her!”
“No! I am Beau Barrese, I never loved you nor knew you!”
He grabs my shoulders, his claws almost digging into my flesh as they protrude.
“I kidnapped a young, defenseless beast… my life is over, I’ll be seen as a pedophile. Oh, God.”
“It-It’ll be okay,” I lie, trying to calm him down. “I’m sure you won’t be accused of—”
“I need to get rid of you, I need to get rid of you. Every trace of you.”
My body freezes. My mind went into a complete state of panic, but I couldn’t move. All I see are his pupils constricting, his fangs baring and salivating. All he has to do is devour me, clean the blood, and bury my bones. Then I’ll just be another unsolved missing beast case. My father would never stop blaming himself.
He just looks at me with those wide, predatory eyes. Hesitating. Not lunging and biting my throat, killing me. He doesn’t want to do this. He thinks this is the only thing he can do to reverse his dreadful mistake, by committing a horrific act.
I spent every day of my life worrying about a fate like this. Always being told that it’s rare for someone to devour a bear and that all of my anxieties will leave me once I grow big. But they were wrong. I was right. I was right the whole time.
I don’t want to be right. I don’t want to die like this, I need to escape my fate. With everything that’s happened to me, I realize that my father’s words weren’t just worried ramblings.
“I pray this will never happen,” he began. “But to stop a sick beast from devouring you, you must calm them down. Look within. The largest beast always has the softest place inside their heart.”
I dread that I have to do this…
“I remember when we used to share tongues!”
He stops, his face going blank.
“Isn’t that what cats do with their loved ones..?”
“You… You were the only one who appreciated my felidae body. Not like my father who only liked my fangs, claws, and deep voice.”
I try to have the softest voice I can muster, to act like Soleda. “You’re deeply soft and sensitive, you only need love.”
“Oh… Oh, yes! I’m just a small kitten, like you used to call me…”
I want to rip my fur off. I have to act like this so I’m not eaten alive? God.
He lets go of my shoulders, handling my wrist like glass as he guides me to his bedroom. His room has clothes and other random objects scattered across the floor and bed. It looks nothing compared to the nicely cleaned room that I was kept in. It was like he made it just for me. How long has he been planning to keep me like this?
“I’m so glad you finally came to your senses, Soleda. We can finally be together again. You’ll be a Santifelon!”
I give him a smile, internally screaming.
He brings me into bed, bringing the covers over us. He brings his arms around my body, holding me so very tight, not any possible chance of letting go. He begins to lick my forehead. It isn’t as disgusting as I thought—it makes me feel like a cub again. It makes me feel as defenseless as a cub. Trapped in a house with someone who would kill you if you tried to leave.
The gentle lap of his tongue makes my eyes droop. I allow them to close, hoping to wake up to this all being a dream. But it’s something I can only fantasize about.
I am his, and I can’t do anything about it.

BIOGRAPHY
tw: religious trauma, domestic abuse
Nora was born the eldest child into a very traditional Christian family. Her little brother Archer is six years her junior, and they were both raised with extremely regressive values in regards to gender roles, relationships, and sexuality.
They started dating a boy from their church when they were a freshman in high school and he was a senior. Despite being very strict and protective, their parents supported the relationship because he came from a good family.
She was in her last year of high school when she got pregnant. At that point, her boyfriend was in college and agreed to marry her, but only if she gave up her own education and moved in with him. Her parents all but forced her to agree, and one shotgun wedding later, they welcomed their son Blake into the world.
The first year of their marriage was overall pretty good. They were quite happy to be a housewife and stay-at-home mom while their husband finished up school. It was what they had been raised to do. But that happiness did not last.
Her husband had a nasty temper, and as soon as anything went even a little bit wrong at home, or he had a bad day at work, he took it out on her. She tried her best to keep him happy but it didn't take much to set him off.
When they were 22 years old, their little brother got kicked out of their parents' house for being gay. They took him in, against both their parents' and their husband's wishes, leading to them being completely cut off as well.
Archer lived with them for the next two years, and in spite of her best efforts to keep him from finding out how bad things were, it was impossible to hide. Her husband's temper would flare up, and she would make bad excuses about where her bruises came from that she knew her brother didn't believe.
When he turned 18 years old, Nora's husband practically forced Archer out of their house. He tried to convince them to take Blake and come with him, but at that point, they were too scared and refused. They had made a vow, and they couldn't abandon their beliefs just because things were hard.
Another five years passed, and even if she had moments when things between them got really bad and she wanted to leave, she didn't feel like she could. She had no job, no higher education, and was entirely financially dependent on her husband—not to mention completely isolated from her friends and family.
It was when he went after Blake that Nora finally snapped and fought back. Years of domestic disturbance calls along with their medical history was enough to put their husband behind bars. After he was arrested, their first call was to Archer, who stayed with them while they worked through the divorce.
After the divorce was finalised, the three of them moved to Dallas-Fort Worth for a fresh start. Once settled in, Nora started taking night classes while working as a waitress, earning an associate's degree in Early Childhood Education. Since then, she has been working as a teacher at Deer Valley Elementary.
They have not been in a relationship since their divorce. It has taken years of therapy for them to even consider it, but now their main concern is how Blake is going to react to it—especially if they start dating a man.
MISC
Nora has a fear of fire due to when she and Archer were at bible study as kids and the church caught fire. Luckily, they were rescued by firefighters without any serious injury, but it still makes her anxious to be around open flames.

Like leaves
Read on ao3
Fall in Vermont was really pretty. Stiles could admit he had been bummed to find out he had a spark back in his senior year of high school, only to discover he would have to move to Vermont if he wanted to learn and develop into a proper emissary. Sure, there were other magic schools closer to home, or at least closer to something, but the one in Vermont was the best and the only one that actually had other supernatural courses, and the prospect of studying with all different kinds of magical people was appealing.
Still, moving away from his dad and his best friend had been hard. Was still hard. Stiles had never had the easiest time making friends, so it had been a pretty lonely first couple of months. He had a few people he was friendly with now, namely Grace, a surprisingly cheery harpy, and Charlie, a vampire. When they had started planning a horseback ride to watch the leaves, Stiles had been all for it, and immediately booked his reservation at the place he'd heard offered the best tours, Moonrise Valley Stables. When his friends had flaked out on him, he figured he might as well go anyway, since the views were supposed to be stunning.
Which brought him to where he was, perched atop a roan mare called Dusty, holding onto the saddle for dear life, wandering after a group of families with kids through the woods. The nature really was impressive, he'd give it that, the blue sky contrasting beautifully with the bright-colored leaves, that varied from pale yellow to burnt orange to bright red to deep burgundy. The brisk fall breeze made his cheeks redden, but wasn't cold enough to be uncomfortable. And the fact that he didn't even have to walk? This had been a good idea after all. Dusty seemed content to plod along after the other horses, so little by little, Stiles started to relax, first letting go of the saddle, then not holding the reins so tight, finally managing to enjoy the views fully. He was just pointing out a pair of bluebirds to one of the kids on the tour when a loud "GOBBLE!" and a swoosh of wings came from his left, spooking his horse into a wild run into the trees.
"Oh, shit!" Stiles managed to squeeze his legs around the horse's body to keep from falling but that only seemed to make Dusty run faster. The wind whooshed around his face and he could feel his heart pounding wildly in his chest. He was still holding onto the reins but pulling at them seemed to have no effect on the sprinting horse, and his left foot had slipped off the stirrup. He quickly managed to grab onto the saddle again - he never should have let it go - and bow down low over Dusty's neck to avoid taking a branch to the face and to try and calm her down a bit. They seemed to be following a deer trail, and he had no idea how he'd even get back to the original trail.
What he did not expect was to hear rustling in the undergrowth apparently following beside him and keeping up with his horse. From the corner of his eye he could see a dark shape moving through the trees and his adrenaline spiked again, cold sweat beading in his lower back. He tried to remember if there were wolves in Vermont. He was pretty sure there were bears, too. Shit. He might be truly actually fucked. He was good at offensive magic but he wasn't sure any of his spells were enough to take out a bear. Magic also tended to work better on other magical beings so he wasn't even sure it would work at all!
He was just praying to every deity he could remember when he saw the dark shape run a little bit ahead of him and stop, turning into a vaguely humanoid shape with a… flannel shirt? Fortunately, the sudden appearance caused the horse to stop, but unfortunately it caused the horse to rear, which finally sent Stiles tumbling into the thankfully leaf-covered ground. He rolled a bit and landed on his back, winded and confused, breathing heavily. The blurry outline of a man took shape as he approached him, with a hand extended.
"You're not a bear," was the first thing out of Stiles' mouth. He didn't take the proffered hand.
The stranger laughed, and his voice was low and pleasant when he replied, "yeah, I don't have the right build for that."
Stiles felt his cheeks redden and sat up, finally taking a good look at his… savior? God, he hoped so, because the man in front of him was gorgeous and it'd be a bummer if he turned out to be a serial killer. He was wearing jeans, heavy boots and a flannel over a plain white T-shirt, and seemed to be about as tall as Stiles himself. He had a full beard that begged to be touched, a sharp nose and green-gray eyes under really impressive eyebrows.
He shook himself and reached up for the other man's hand, pulling himself up before he felt his magic reacting. When he looked up, the man's eyes were no longer that weird gray-green, but were instead shining amber. A shifter. Probably a werewolf, by the way his magic was reacting. He could feel it trying to reach for the man, like a puppy asking to be petted. His spark was especially attuned to moon magic, and werewolves were basically moon magic made flesh. It's why he wanted to become an emissary in the first place.
The man growled low, probably at the overfamiliar way Stiles' magic was behaving.
Stiles let go of his hand. "Sorry, dude! Didn't mean to do that! It just reacts to stuff sometimes. You're a wolf?"
The stranger looked at him with narrowed eyes for a few seconds, probably listening to his heart, which wouldn't be too helpful with the way it was still beating kind of fast. For many reasons. Stiles took the chance to finally look around, and saw Dusty haphazardly tied to a tree branch a few feet away, looking for all the world like a nice, calm horse. Sleepy, even. Stiles knew better. Still, it was strange that she was so at ease near a werewolf. Most prey animals tended to get nervous at best when this close to an apex predator. Stiles looked back at said apex predator to find him still staring. "Were you with one of the tours?" He asked.
"Yeah, it was going fine but then Dusty here got spooked by a… wild turkey?" He gestured vaguely at the horse.
The stranger laughed. "We got a few of those around, yeah. She should know better than to take off like that, though." He walked towards Dusty, grabbing her reins again and bringing her back to Stiles. "My family owns Moonrise Valley. I'm Derek." He offered his hand.
"That's awesome! I'm Stiles," he said as he shook Derek's hand, "I'm studying magic at Underhill University."
He grinned. "I figured."
Oh, god, he had cute bunny teeth. Stiles was doomed.
"Let me just text my sister to let her know I found you. She was the one leading your ride. Though she probably knows by now or she'd already be here." Derek started leading the horse along the small trail they were on, and Stiles followed. He'd thought the trail had been in the opposite direction, so good thing he wasn't alone or he'd probably be lost for days.
He scrambled for something to say. "Sooo, your family that owns Moonrise Valley… Are they also your pack?" No one had ever accused him of not being nosy.
"Yeah," Derek replied, looking at him curiously. "Why?"
"No reason! Just wondering, because of the name and all. It's cute!" He grinned and winked at Derek, who snorted and rolled his eyes, but didn't look too annoyed. The fact that his family was also his pack meant he was probably a born wolf, the first one Stiles had ever met.
"The name was my father's idea. We used to be called just Hale Stables, but when we started offering tours and trail rides, he thought it sounded more memorable." He shrugged, but he sounded fond.
"Wait, Hale Stables as in the Hale Pack?" The Hale Pack was well known in the emissary circles; Their current alpha was pretty powerful, and had a lot of sway in the supernatural community even though her pack wasn't that large. Some people also said that the Hale pack 'wolves could do a full shift, but Stiles wasn't sure he believed that. It sounded like fairytale stuff and if there was one thing he'd learned from the supernatural world was that things were never like the stuff in fairytales. For better or worse.
"Heard of us, have you?" He raised an eyebrow. "Yeah, the Hale Pack. I hope that's not gonna be a problem."
"No, dude! Of course not! I just heard a lot about the Hale alpha, all good things, don't worry!"
"Yeah, okay." He shook his head. "I'm sorry for making you fall off your horse, by the way. I didn't expect her to rear like that, but there's a drop off ahead and I was worried you guys might take a tumble, so I had to act quick." It was clear he was trying to change the subject, and Stiles wasn't about to deny him, despite his curiosity. Derek had been kind to him, and he didn't want to make him uncomfortable or anything.
"No problem, the ground was pretty soft, with all the leaves, and it wasn't a big fall anyway. Thanks for getting her to stop running." They had been walking while they talked, toward what Stiles assumed was the original trail his tour had been following, until they reached a clearing and stopped.
Stiles finally looked around, surprised to see a cozy little cabin, a small garden with empty planters out front, and what looked like a chicken coop to one side. To the other side, near the back, he could see an old tree stump with an axe stuck to it, a few chopped logs spread around. It kinda looked like it came straight out of a fairytale.
While Stiles had been gawking at the house, Derek had moved and tied Dusty to a wooden pole near the porch, and turned back to look at him. He hurried closer. "I thought we were going back to the trail."
"Sorry. Laura said she'd move on with the ride, since you guys were almost done anyway. You can book another one, free of charge, of course." Derek smiled, and Stiles melted. "Do you want to come in for a cup of tea? Sorry, I don't really have coffee," he said apologetically.
"A cup of tea sounds nice, thanks." He was usually a coffee drinker, but he wouldn't complain if it meant he could spend some more time with Derek. They headed inside, which was small and cozy but still bright and clean. The main room was kitchen, dining and living room all in one, with a huge fireplace and a comfortable-looking sofa. Two doors to the right led to what Stiles assumed to be a bedroom and a bathroom. "This place is nice."
"Thanks," Derek said from the kitchen area, where he was preparing the tea. Stiles wondered if he imagined the tips of his ears getting a little darker. He soon brought them two steaming cups of fragrant tea and motioned to the front door, leading them to the porch, where a wooden bench was set overlooking the woods around the house.
Stiles sat and blew on his tea a bit, waiting for it to cool. "Do you also do the horseback ride tours? Or is that just your sister? Do you work at the stables too?"
"Only if they're understaffed. I used to do tours, back before we had a good roster of employees. Laura still does because she loves it, but she doesn't have to." He seemed relaxed, sitting and drinking his tea. The leaves were pretty but they had nothing on Stiles's view right at that second.
"So, you just rescue poor clumsy sparks from crazy horses?"
Derek laughed, which was soon becoming one of Stiles's favorite sounds. "I'm actually a licensed forester. And Dusty's not crazy. She just saw a chance and took it. You were probably slacking, anyway." His tone was clearly teasing.
"Well, yeah! I didn't expect you guys to put me on a crazy horse!" He absently gestured with his hands, nearly spilling his tea. "You probably did this on purpose, to get me away from the group, lure me here and murder me or something."
"Oh, and you fell right into my trap, huh?" Derek's smile was sharp and, for the first time in their short acquaintance, Stiles would describe it as wolfish. It was an unfairly attractive look.
"Well," he said, "it's not like I'm defenseless." He touched Derek's hand with a finger, pushing a little bit of his spark into the touch. It was meant to feel tingly, at most, but he startled so hard he almost dropped his cup of tea. "Sorry!" Stiles said immediately.
"Don't worry." Derek was definitely blushing now. "I just wasn't expecting it to feel like that."
"Like what?" he asked.
"Like it's pulling at my wolf." Derek flashed his eyes. "Like the full moon."
Now it was Stiles's turn to blush, which he knew for a fact did not look as attractive as when Derek did it. "My spark," he explained, "is especially attuned to the moon. It's why I'm training to become an emissary. Why I came to Vermont."
"Good." Was all he said in response.
After a few long minutes, he reached his hand for Stiles. "Give me your phone. I'll add my number. When you want to go for a horseback ride, call me and I'll take you."
Stiles handed him his phone. When he handed it back, their fingers touched, and Derek's eyes flashed bright amber again.
They finished their tea in silence, looking at each other more than at the beautiful scenery around them. There was tension in the air, but it didn't feel bad or awkward. It felt expectant, like a new beginning.
When the shadows started growing longer, Derek took the teacups back inside. Stiles walked over to Dusty, petting her velvety nose, and smiled at Derek when he approached. "Ready to go back?" he asked, and Stiles nodded back.
Derek helped him scramble back onto the horse, and then climbed up behind him, taking the reins and effectively caging him in. Stiles shivered.
The trip back was a blur of red and gold leaves, Derek's woodsy, smoky scent, the feel of his arms brushing against Stiles's as he guided the horse through the trails, low conversations between long moments of silence.
When they reached the stables, the sun was setting and the wind was getting chilly. Derek dismounted first and waited while Stiles did the same - with only a little less grace. When he turned back, Derek was staring at him so intensely it gave him goosebumps. He walked closer, pressing Stiles's back against Dusty's warm side, caging him in again. With a breath of relief, Stiles reached a hand and finally touched that soft beard, bringing his mouth into a soft, unsure kiss. Derek was breathing hard, eyes closed, and he responded by grabbing Stiles's waist and deepening the kiss until they were both panting and holding onto each other like they couldn't bear to be apart. The hard, deep kisses turned back into gentle and unhurried, until Derek was just nosing at Stiles's temple and dropping little pecks near his ear and down to his neck, making him laugh softly. After a few more minutes they managed to separate, and he walked back to his car on wobbly knees.
"Call me," was all he said before closing the jeep's door, and Stiles nodded, keeping his eyes on Derek as long as he could as he maneuvered towards the road. When he got home a few hours later, he still felt like he was falling.

Going through my old phone voice recordings... I found the MOST in character Wolf 359 moment but it's literally an actual audio recording taken like three years ago between me and my friends...
Context: Me and my two friends (Jessie & James) were driving through a pitch black curved mountain road in the dead of night not long after we all graduated high school. I was discussing an idea for a play I wanted to write involving drag queen hallucinations...
TRANSCRIPT
Jesse: So you know my name for Blair St. Clair, Witch Project Saint Luke?
Me (Playfully): We are NOT calling her Witch Project Saint Luke!
(Cue Me Laughing)
Jesse: Why? Blair Witch Project-
Me (Overlapping): She was named after-
(The sudden sound of Jesse letting out deep, panicked, staccato guttural screams. Almost as if on cue I shout a panicked and confused 'What!?' mere moments after every scream. Imagine if you will... Scream. WHAT!? Scream. wHaT!? SCREAM! ((Somehow A Bit Exasperated)) WHAT!?)
(Jesse screams one last time. I do my automatic response...)
Me (Sounding Genuinely Peeved, More Annoyed Than Scared, Almost Bratty Child Tone): What?!
Jesse (Genuinely struggling to breath, still guttural): There was a deer- middle of the road-
Me (Genuinely Confused, With a Subtle but Noticeable Valley Girl Tonality That I Suppose Is The Result of Living in Los Angeles My Entire Life): Why did you start doing that?
Jesse (Exasperated, 'Are You Dumb?' Tone of Voice): Cause I was going to hit it!
Me (Almost Awkwardly Laughing, Weirdly Nonchalant, 'Oops Too Bad' Tone): Oh... sorry...
(A brief pause.)
Me (Audible 'Oh Well' Shrug, Again Very Nonchalant): I'm glad we didn't die.
(The sound of Jesse struggling not to hyperventilate.)
Me (Voice lowering to a whisper mid-sentence, almost a stage whisper, again- GENUINELY confused): WHy didn't you break?
(More barely audible hyperventilating from Jesse.)
James (Tinny Sounding, He's in the Backseat, Effortlessly Matter of Fact, Think Linus from Charlie Brown): In moments of stress people often do that which comes most natural to them.
Me (Again, Weirdly Giggly, So Deeply Confused By Everything, Nearly Bursting Into Laughter by the End of the Question): Which is drive us off a cliff?
(Jesse's hyperventilating becomes louder just as I let out a loud, awkward laugh. It sounds vaguely like Goofy's laugh- like the Disney character.)
Me (Cartoonish Relief in Voice, Still Barely Holding Back Laughter): Boy am I glad the audio recorder caught that! If we died we'd have evidence of what the fuck happened!
James ('I Love You, Shut Up Please' But Said Politely Tone): Milo, may I suggest-
(James' words become inaudible as Jesse's hyperventilating grows louder and louder- drowning everything else out.)
Me (Tinny, A Bit Further Back Now, Clearly Apologetic Yet Still Awkwardly Laughing, This Situation Has Clearly Not Sunk In Yet): We're gonna take a moment... I'm gonna shut up... (A Bit Sheepish, Finally Understanding the Gravitas of the Moment) Shutting up now...
(Jesse continues to hyperventilate. We hear James get closer.)
James (Kind, Worried, Slight Forced Cheer in Voice): You okay Jesse? (More Clearly Worried) Need some water?
(Audio Cuts Out Abruptly. End Transcript.)
+ + +
Like... that's... that's Eiffel (Me), Hera (Jesse), and Minkowski (James). Like... we get that right?
+ + +
Also worth noting me and my friends were fine in the end! We swerved on a bend in the road to avoid the deer and managed to stop the car in a little side section of the road. We took a bit to breath and drink water and I checked in on Jesse and we drove home.
That happened three or so years ago and Jesse was the one who had me dig up the audio file so I could send it to her because she finds it super fucking funny in hindsight, which... fair.

Hello hello! Just stopping by to hear a little about whichever WIP(s) you want to share about! What do you hope readers pick up on from your WIP? What do you hope is their favorite aspect of it?
Since a lot of what I'm working on is dependent on things that came before, I'm hoping that people pick up on the smaller threads running between them and consistent little character beats and references.
For example, I'm running a Lake Wonder game called Slime Time that takes place from March 11th, 2023 and has currently stretched on in-canon to the 15th or 16th of that month while the Seltzie Boys deal with a thawing UFO and Ernest's dad hitting him with a car. This takes place simultaneously to PP2, which starts the night before with Tiff and Denny (and Andy, secretly) setting out for Pine Valley. In one of Tiff's early chapters, I drop this line:
[Ivan Cunningham], admittedly, was acting kind of odd when she saw him earlier today, like he wasn’t quite himself.
This is a reference to something the Seltzie Boys found out when they set off the sprinklers at the high school: Ivan Cunningham has been replaced by a goo version of himself. So, it's mostly things like that-- little nods to other events that happened, be it by direct knowledge or some in-character speculation.
Other times, the big thing is repeated phrases and motifs leaking from character to character. Tiff repeating "the only way out is through" comes back up from its Unholy Water days to both her and Denny, especially because Denny gives it as advice later on; but it also mixes with a sentiment from Esther that's evolved from a point in Tiff's worldview, that being:
Tumblr media
This is, of course, inherently linked to this same sentiment but in a different form. Between the two of them, it's "Things are going to work out because they have to (I do not have another choice)" versus "things are going to work because we're going to make them work," and these bleed in and out of each other.
Plus, I have little points of imagery and description I put in to signal other things. Like, each character has certain imagery I put in over and over again. For Tiff, it's conspiracy boards, things that inexplicably glow, and stars; Bloodsaw is steam, stigmata, dirt in your mouth; Kay has bone thorns, bats, and (even pre-parasite) a description of "something gnawing" in her stomach; Duckie has her pigs, clowns, and fucked-up senses; Cory constantly refers to music (both pop culture reference and comparison to instruments); and Denny has a recurring line of "teeth suddenly too sharp" (and feeling her heart in her teeth) and references to protective roles. So, when they're having moments that are supposed to ring with the bells of someone else, I'll intentionally pull in imagery from said person in the hopes of invoking them on a subtextual level.
For example, when Denny is standing out on the back porch in PP2 after Tiff takes on the parasite and things go incredibly wrong (to the point of, gasp, characters being vulnerable), we get a couple references to stargazing and we get this moment:
Tumblr media
This is something we get at the same time that we're invoking Kay motifs for Tiff because of the decision she made-- not hungering for normal food, stepping out into the snow, and the concept of eating in general. Like, I pulled it in intentionally-- this lack of appetite that suddenly sparks back into being the moment you're faced with something you shouldn't be eating (like, say, a dead clown. Or an uncooked rabbit. Or a decomposing deer).
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
Honestly, like-- the fact that Kay really doesn't like meat is another little peppered-in thing and I'm not sure how obvious it is, since we haven't spent much time with her. It isn't as present as, say, Tiff's sleep issues or Denny's extensive CD collection.
(Honorable mention is the deer scene in PP2 being a reference to Blowfly Girl. I've got an absolute fascination with that deer story.)

No page break used… that’s the point. This isn’t even every school. It doesn’t take into account grocery stores, movie theaters, workplaces, public parks, malls, hair salons, bowling alleys, concerts, dance halls, nightclubs, yoga studios, places of worship, fucking “Independence” Day parades…. The list is endless. We are a sad, inept, violent nation incapable and unwilling to protect even our most vulnerable citizens.
Takes a long time to scroll thru the list and unless laws are changed, the list will get longer.

"I am YEG Arts" Series: Jeff Collins
Tumblr media
Jeff Collins at Collins Studio Gallery. Photo provided by the artist.
For Jeff Collins, the key to having a successful career as an artist is showing up every day. His consistency and commitment have defined his long career. “The inspiration shows up when you’re at work,” are words he lives by.  At the end of his studies, advice he received from his Red Deer College painting instructor, Joseph Reeder, to forget everything he’d been taught,” inspired him to lock himself away in his studio for six months and shut out all distractions. During that pivotal time nearly 30 years ago, his practice in landscape painting took form, and he’s maintained a studio in Edmonton ever since. In 2019, he took a big leap with the opening of Collins Studio Gallery, which serves as his working studio, a classroom where he teaches oil painting, and a gallery that welcomes community and is an exhibition space for emerging artists and curators to show their work.
This week on the YEG Arts blog, we catch up with Jeff Collins.
Tell us about your connection to Edmonton and what keeps you living and working here.
I was born in Edmonton and studied through high school here. I moved away for about ten years and during that time, I lived in Jasper. In Jasper, I had my first apartment and when I wanted to put art up on the walls, everything I saw was just cliché posters, and so I thought “I can do better than this, look at all the scenery around Jasper.” My mother was a painter, so it was always part of my life although I didn’t pursue it much until then. With some encouragement from those who saw my early work, I decided to study art and design at Red Deer College [now known as Red Deer Polytechnic] and the University of Alberta. I then went on to Grant MacEwan Community College [now MacEwan University] to study arts administration.
After returning to Edmonton, it was really the first time I was part of the arts community here and it was just so supportive and amazing. Some of the highlights for me at that time (the early nineties) was the Works Art & Design Festival. They were so, so instrumental in creating community and making Edmonton a supportive place for artists. Latitude 53 was an influential gallery for me, also Arts Habitat Edmonton, and of course the amazing river valley and the fabulous people here. I’ve been here ever since working away as an artist and really being part of the community.

What’s one of the biggest professional risks you’ve taken, and how did it influence where you are today?
As an artist, you take risks every single day and you’re putting yourself out there, and if you’re true to your craft, you’re really pulling deep inside of you to pull that out and to put it out there, where other people can see it. That’s always so risky. It’s kind of like every day as an artist is a risk. I worked at the Alberta Craft Council for many years and when I decided to quit and work full-time in my studio, that was a pretty huge risk financially. I am very happy that I did that, though it’s always been a gig-to-gig kind of thing since, and I worked out of my studio between contract positions. It’s been four years — I can’t believe it — since I opened Collins Studio Gallery! I signed a lease, and I trusted that if this is meant to be, it was going to happen. So, leaving my full-time job and signing the lease on where I am now and opening a gallery — where I also teach classes and have my studio — were all big risks! Sometimes I think “well I don’t take any risks,” but other times I think, “well, I guess everything I do is kind of risky,” depending on how you look at it.
What does community mean to you, and where do you find it?
One thing I enjoy about Edmonton is that the art community is so supportive, diverse, and I find it’s non-competitive. When I think of community, what I really think of is everyone really supporting each other and looking after each other and knowing that you can rely on that community when you’re having hard times. I find that so rich in Edmonton. There are great things about other cities for sure, but I feel there’s a little more competition elsewhere. I find Edmonton is a lot more collaborative, even in between disciplines, for instance musicians and dancers will team up with painters to put on a show, and that’s really cool!
I’ve met some great people. Will Truchon and Vince Gasparri, whom I’ve known since Red Deer College days, and I have decided to pool our resources and talents to bring some exciting visual art and collaborative events, including experimental electronic music to the gallery [Collins Studio Gallery]. The idea is to stimulate an even more collaborative and dynamic art community in Edmonton where people are allowed to take risks creatively and have it shown before the public.
This is what I want my gallery to be, a community gallery where I can facilitate things that aren’t necessarily shown in other places and if I can allow that to happen, I mean I’ve got the space and if you’ve got an idea, come to me and let’s see how we can make it happen.

One of the music events at my gallery, we call “Shapes and ‘Scapes,” is where we team up musicians with painters to do an experimental electronic improv music and painting set. Usually, it’s a 20-minute set and it’s been a lot of fun. I’ve become a lot more experimental in my work and one reason is that I was involved in a “Shapes and ‘Scapes.”  I completed a painting in the time frame whereas it usually takes me a month or so to make a landscape painting. I really wanted to see what I could do and really push myself to experiment, and I came up with something that I thought was interesting, and from there I’ve really pushed my painting. Another reason that my work is in the experimental stage is that during Covid, like many of us, there was some personal tragedy in my family, and because of that I decided to take a year off, a kind of sabbatical away from painting. It’s been almost a year now since I’ve come back to it.
What qualities overlap in being an artist, teacher, and gallery owner? How have you grown most in each role?
They overlap in that they all involve getting over fears, that’s for sure. With painting, looking deep inside of yourself and bringing that forward, that’s kind of a fearful act to do, to be really honest with yourself and bring something out that other people can see. When I first started out teaching, I was really fearful, I wanted my students to like me and didn’t want to waste their time. But then, I realized that with that fear, I was thinking of myself! I was able to turn it around and focus on each student. And as a gallery owner, again I keep on thinking, what can I give to people? Not, “oh I hope they like my gallery when they come in,” it’s like what can I give to them because they’ve come in here and maybe they want to learn something about art or maybe they’ve never been in an art gallery, and I try to make my space really kind of a community gallery.  How I’ve grown in each role is just an evolution.

For the nearly 30 years that I’ve been painting, I’ve been painting pretty traditional, great Canadian landscapes. For a while now I’ve wanted to push that in a new direction and with the “Shapes and ‘Scapes,” where I had 20 minutes in front of people to actually do it, I just got out of my way and made it happen. It took a long time for that 20 minutes to actually happen. I’m now exploring symbols that have meaning to me, and they may be symbols that other people use or have picked up on but they’re all symbols from my life that I’ve experienced. There’s also a spiritual aspect to my work. At one time it was all about me being present in this time, in this world, in this physical realm, so it was very important to me to paint actual places and get inspiration on location and take that back into the studio. Now it’s more like ok, that’s my physical body or physical being speaking to my spiritual being and now I feel like exploring symbols and what they mean to me and now it’s the other way around and my spiritual being is reacting to the physical world around me.

What excites you most about the YEG arts scene right now?
After two years of not going out and seeing hardly anything, it all really excites me. I did a music show in my gallery last month where it was sold out, there were about 35 people in here — it’s a small gallery! The collaborative work that’s going on between different disciplines excites me, the festivals coming back and gaining traction, I love that. I’m really excited about what’s going on in the Alberta Avenue district, and Arts on the Ave is spearheading all of those things. The Kaleido Family Arts Festival and Deep Freeze: A Byzantine Winter Festival, for me, they are my favourite festivals in Edmonton because they’re so eclectic and you get to see it all in such a short period of time, it is a lot of fun. I’m really excited to see where things are going to go next, as well. I’ll quote the Tragically Hip, “bring on a brand-new renaissance.” It’s what I feel we’re going into here, a rebirth.

About Jeff Collins
Jeff Collins is an artist living in Edmonton, with nearly 30 years of studio practice. His formal studies were at Red Deer College (now known as Red Deer Polytechnic) and the University of Alberta. Jeff has received many awards and recognition for his artwork, notably the Telus Courage to Innovate in the Arts Award. In 2013/14 he served as the City of Edmonton’s inaugural Artist in Residence. His paintings have sold nationally and internationally. As an art educator and facilitator, he strives to connect people to art and creativity, encouraging skill-building, laughter and personal growth.
While he’s made a name for himself painting landscapes in oil for most of his career as an artist, he also loves to paint still-lifes, figures and almost anything else he sees and encounters in the natural world. Jeff is also fascinated with abstraction and using the properties of paint with the formal elements of painting and drawing to express emotions and captivate viewers.
In 2019, Jeff opened Collins Studio Gallery in the area of Alberta Avenue in Edmonton. It serves as his working studio, classroom where he teaches beginner and advanced oil painting, and exhibition space where emerging artists and curators are given an opportunity to show their work in front of a public audience.
