I know that Inkling societies mirror human ones because of plot reasons going back to Alterna, but I've really enjoyed seeing your 'convergent evolution' takes on the biology, so why not apply that same logic to something like, say, architecture? At a glance, sure, Inkopolis and the Splatlands look recognizable to us, but would for instance an inkling or octoling's home have a layout differently built for their unique needs and behavior?
Thank you! also yes this is a good point! I've been avoiding doing anything too outlandish with the architecture or much of any of the worldbuilding to be honest because we know very little about Splatoon architecture and... well, stuff like this, to begin with. And it's harder to try and change major things about the world itself than it is to work with alternative biology for a creature in my opinion; all we really know when it comes to architecture and city- and building design in Splatoon that it is very similar to those of humans, and a lot of the elements are based on modern day Japan. I doubt the developers are doing that much to differentiate the architecture from human buildings and stuff because granted it would be a ridiculous amount of thoughts and work to sculpt a society and buildings that accommodate like 500 different species MINIMUM.... there's some little things here and there, like the Giant Doorways in the Deepsea Metro, but then there's other things like the freaking escalator in Inkopolis Plaza that's literally the width of maybe 1 Inkling and no other species even fits in that. Hell, it's not even the width of TWO PEOPLE which is at least expected of escalators to my knowledge--- anyway....
my point being I don't like to make sweeping differences to human architecture when it comes to Splatoon, because whether I like it or not a LOT of their stuff is just human architecture a little bit to the left. But that doesn't mean you can't make any changes to it, and it also doesn't mean there aren't any changes, those changes just might not be as visible.
Some random things I've thought about: Modern housing in Inkadia has VERY strong windows. Glass in general is very strong in urban environments, especially buildings near Turf War areas for obvious reasons... you don't want people Super Jumping through your window nor your window blasted to smithereens by a Trizooka shot that missed.
In apartment buildings, if there are mail slots on the doors, there's a container on the other side. Prevents people from slinking into your house through the mail slot. Apparently this is a common thing to have in Japan? We just have mail slots or postboxes out in the yard or lobby.
Also to prevent people from slinking into your house: residential buildings have dense grates, nets or spikes in their ventilation shafts. In some older buildings and non-residentials, these might be missing. But without things like this, any Inkling (typically) can just fit straight through a pipe as long as their beak fits in it, so you would end up having guests you maybe don't want.
Quickly about apartments; they're actually a very popular form of living not just for cost-cutting and because there's a fuck ton of residents in Inkadia, but because inkfish are mostly very social and do better surrounded with lots of people living in close quarters. The two most popular types of apartments are single-person ones that are basically just a single-room hole, and bigger apartments that have several small rooms and a community area that are meant for a whole school of squid (usually a friend group) to live in. People who live in the single-person apartments typically just go home to sleep and maybe cook or something... unless you're an introverted squid, or not a squid at all, and just settle for very little when it comes to space.
Inklings ALWAYS have some type of direct heating in their houses, from space heaters to a kotatsu to heated blankets to sun lamps. This is because Inklings are mostly cold-blooded and become very sluggish if their body temperature falls too much (for example from lack of physical activity or from cold room temperature), so there's a focus on keeping one's living quarters comfortably warm. Most lamps marketed for inkfish are actually heat lamps to the point where finding a lamp that Doesn't Make The Room Hot if it's on for too long is kind of hard.
Inklings are pretty vulnerable to dry air due to their thin skin and dependence on humidity to keep them thoroughly hydrated. As a result, you'll find air humidifiers in like, every house. In some AC units, a humidifier function is included. From a human perspective, the average Inkling apartment feels warm and humid - but to them it feels just normal. Due to the relatively high humidity, it's pretty common for electrical outlets to have covers for when they're not in use.
It's common for Octarian homes to have "sleeping holes" or "dens" carved into the wall. These haven't really become trendy in Inkopolis yet, but they probably will. It's also quite common for inkfish homes to have stacked furniture and interior made in layers - because they can fit in very tight spaces in swim form, maze-like interiors are still fully usable to most inkfish. Though it's rarer to find people who actually want to deal with the clutter.
Most Inkopolis bathrooms have a combined shower-bath. Inkfish showers come with a shower head that only really lets mist through on the default setting. (You're expected to test this BEFORE you take your first shower and replace it if necessary because you don't want to get into the tub and then find out it's a normal cross-species shower head on fucking Jet Mode.) Bathtubs are mainly used for re-absorbing moisture and soaking in ink rather than cleaning (because inkfish don't do very well with actual baths).
Most flooring is specifically made to be ink-resistant and non-absorptive. The combined humidity of the air and the ink that inkfish naturally get everywhere would ruin wooden floors IMMEDIATELY.
Toilets usually have a flap or gate blocking the drain that flips open when it's flushed. There are too many historical cases of people falling into toilets and just fucking dying or going missing forever because it's difficult to get out. (Mostly kids, but also people who fell asleep or too far into thought and just slinked into there. The world is full of danger when you can fit into any gap.) also lots of people accidentally laying eggs there which for obvious reasons is REALLY BAD if there's nothing to catch those.
All modern apartment buildings are required to have elevators. I'm pretty sure this is also just a real-life requirement nowadays. A lot of older buildings in Inkopolis don't have any, though... and while Super Jumping on street level is usually prohibited, most apartments have roof access, so a lot of people still jump between work/hobbies and their house. It is A LOT faster than dealing with traffic or walking (but it's also mostly illegal).
uh probably more things. My brain is empty now but hopefully that's some kind of inspiring ty for asking!

On Acht and Romance
going into side order, from the september direct trailer where Acht was first revealed i remember the joke at the time clearly being "and now Marina's ex is here".
Tumblr media
the way this line [image description in alt] was written was basically the only evidence for this kind of idea, when the theories were kind of "Marina's order tantrum is sucking people in from her past and the DLC will be about going through her memories", so ellipses in a line like this is basically all theory crafters on no info need to go for shipping.
i'm not one who's super into plot theory crafting, i know full well the tendency to theorize something that's cooler than what you actually get and being disappointed that the story didn't live up to your imagination. the things i was obsessed with in side order promotional material was the obvious bleached coral theme, the symbolism of coral ejecting it that which keeps it safe out of stress being mapped onto Marina, the idea of her pushing those she loves (and those that keep her colorful) away out of a spiral (and it does turn out that was basically exactly what the prologue was going for)
so the whole "Acht and Marina exes" thing was kinda just a joke to me, wasn't even on my radar as something they were actually going to lean into, frankly i was still scared nintendo was going to make them kill pearlina by sending Marina to superhell or smth and we'd end up with a splatoonified destiel meme
so when the DLC comes out and it is legitimately a "they knew each other since childhood" thing, and the running bit is Acht feeling awkward third-wheeling pearlina, and it's explicit in text that one of the reasons they're coming back after the DLC is over is to scope out Pearl as the girl who took down the NILS statue who is now dating Marina... it struck me as really interesting.
at first it was me keeping up the "Marina and Acht are exes" as a joke, but as i kept reading dialogue lines, it slowly became less of a joke, they were to some degree dating because opposite but complimentary autisms, and then drifting apart as Marina got pulled away on the big girl assignment with DJ Octavio, and then the despair of knowing Marina left without even saying goodbye to Acht... it fits well into that reading, it slowly became less of a joke to believe that
but the thing that really makes me think this is intentional subtext is the final Acht diary entry you get from clearing Eight's palette. through the rest of side order talking about Acht's backstory, it seemed like they were retconning the OE lore that Acht had gotten themself sanitized intentionally, losing themself so they could explore their music deeper. but in the final diary, where Acht directly says they drifted into the deepsea metro to fall into their music, because, and i quote
"Hey, Marina. You can guess the chaos your desertion caused. I ended up without much to do except make music. "
they fell into a depression spiral when their girlfriend deserted their society without so much as saying goodbye, falling into their music deep away from interacting with everyone else, to the point that, as the old lore implies, they chose to give up their identity to escape the depression, but sanitization so thoroughly did it that they forget even making the choice.
so when they get brought out of that haze back into being themself again, with the only the barest strung-together horrified memories of what happened in the half a decade interim gap in their life, only to find themself replaced by some inkling they don't know at all, of course they're gonna be awkward seeing the two flirting.
they put on a stoic face because that's clearly their coping mechanism within this damaged body they barely recognize, hiding their eyes behind their tinted glasses so they can't be seen beneath. but the only time they let themself be vulnerable, the only time their eyes can be seen, is when they charge out in the climax when the world is at stake, diving in to try to save Marina, leaving the elevator and its protection behind to help the only person they remember ever caring about.
it's why i don't really like the aroace reading that much, because i think this reading is even more tragic and fits into the themes. the world has changed, it can't go back to how it once was, you can't put the octolings back in the canyon bottle. Marina abandoned Acht to the point they got their identity destroyed willingly to escape the pain, and when Acht came back they were replaced by the inkling whose voice they remember even through the haze of sanitized memories.
the lingering effects of sanitization have changed how they relate to everything (i think there's a fair argument to be made for the idea that sanitization took their gender can't have shit in the deepsea metro), but Acht clearly still cares for Marina and still, the slightest bit, resents having to be reminded repeatedly every time pearlina flirts in front of them how they were replaced.

Haikara Walker pages 6-17
Scanned by @milkiemilkshake Scans color corrected by @Mk_Squid Posted these on twitter a couple years ago, now here they are on tumblr with some slight adjustments to the wording, and a few more little tidbits translated!
Translations under the cut!
Pages 6-7 A Strange Underground World
(Page 7, main text) After passing through the hustle and bustle of Inkopolis Square, we entered a sparsely populated alleyway. With Spyke tapping away on his laptop with a difficult look on his face in a half-basement glass-walled café, we walked further down the alley and found a passage leading to the underground. Standing in front of the barricade, we listened carefully to the sounds coming out of the underground, the faint rumbling of a train running on rails. Yes, what lies beneath the ground is a subway system, the "Deepsea Metro." Connecting important underground facilities, this essential artery of transportation for life in the Deepsea is almost unknown to the Inkling world. Let's take a long look around this secret-base-esque location.
(Page 6, caption) A Deepsea Metro station. A subway train is about to arrive at the platform. In the corner of the station, which is also an experimental facility, there are a lot of IV sets.
(Page 7, caption) Inside the dimly lit station, a graffiti-painted map of the line welcomes passengers. It may have been created by the groovy deep-sea dwellers who use this line. (Page 6, CQ Cumber and Page 7, Iso Padre Information. i keep trying to put images in here but it keeps breaking so heres a link to this info typeset.)
In the subway cars, you can meet many inhabitants of the Deepsea, who look very different from us Inklings. The appearance of the passengers also seems to change depending on the subway line. Maybe you'll learn something new by observing them? C.Q. Cumber The conductor of the Deep Sea Metro, whose vivid blue body color is eye-catching, gives out CQ points and provides information on the platform at each station. See link for translated notes.
Iso Padre A famous passenger of the Deep Sea Metro, this deepsea isopod uncle loves Mem cakes. His best feature is his whiskers. See link for translated notes
Pages 8-9
(Page 8) The vast Central Station is the main facility that controls the operation of the Deepsea Metro. When you visit the platform, you'll find a single phone installed in the middle of the platform. When you answer the Telephone, you will hear a voice through the speakers that will lead you to the "Promised Land," and you will be given a CQ-80 and CQ card for free. Check it out before you stroll through the subway.
It seems that many of the inhabitants of the Deepsea have a light or transparent body color, probably because they live in the gloomy depths of the ocean. Their fashion sense and use of items that we don't have may make for a good example of how to dress stylishly.
(Page 9) When you turn on the CQ-80, a map of the Deepsea Metro lines will be projected in midair. It's a great way to see at a glance the stations where different lines connect and where the "thangs" are located.
(Page 8-9, bottom) Not translating all these notes. some info: -The dogfish salarymen are described as "ikemen." lol -The deepsea jellyfish are a bit smarter than those on the surface -the ping pong tree sponge lady likes wearing vintage one-piece outfits. her perfume is a bit strong
Pages 10-11
(page 10) The interior lights are exquisitely adjusted to make the neon tubes flowing through the windows look beautiful. The innovative materials used here enhance the viewing experience of the dim atmosphere of the Deepsea.
(Page 11) Deepsea Metro stations are directly connected to the experimental facilities. C.Q. Cumber said happily, "It's very convenient and popular among both the Octarians working at the facility and people living in the Deepsea."
(Page 11, bottom)The interior of the train is designed with accessibility in mind, so that even the inhabitants of the Deepsea, who have larger heads and bodies than ordinary Octarians, can ride comfortably. The conductor spares no effort in moving things around for the passengers.
Page 12
The inhabitants of the Deepsea, who have adapted to the harsh environment brought about by high water pressure, low water temperature, and low oxygen, seem to have evolved unique body parts. It is not easy to copy their cool appearance.
Pages 14-15
(Page 15, Caption) The culture of the Deepsea is different from that of the surface where we Inklings live. After passing through the gates of each station, there are strange items floating around that you may or may not have seen before. To visit the inside of the facility, you need to pay CQ points at the ticket gate.
(Page 14 and 15, bottom) Not translating all these notes. Summary: -Real life sea angels have an inverted triangle shape, that influenced the sea angels in game (labeled "onii-san", big brother) to look all macho. supposed to look like theyre in rugby club at university. -The scalyfoot gastropod is labeled as the "ironclad big sister." Her scales are supposed to look like a shawl. something about a scary feeling of illegality to her (like shes a criminal? not sure) -the barreleye fish gives off the impression of either a baby or an old lady
Pages 16-17
(Page 16) At the experimental facilities outside each station, you can play fun games with the working Octarians. If you are successful, you will receive CQ points, which will allow you to visit more places.
(Page 17) The Deepsea is full of fascinating species and new cultures that are rarely found on the surface. The unique atmosphere of the Deepsea is something that can only be felt by visiting the area. Why don't you take this opportunity to travel to the Deepsea Metro for a weekend?

Welcome back!
Is there any lore of the big squish squiggle? And what does he think of humans and giant creatures?
Thank you! :D
I'll answer the second question first! He was very curious about humans from the first time he encountered them. He was interested in everything; the sounds they made, body language, social interactions, their clothes, their creations etc. He absolutely loved learning about them and then forming connections with them. Even if they did sometimes "bite him".
While he's still insanely curious (all of our technology is new), after a past experience he's a little more wary of getting emotionally close to humans. Less willing to form bonds.
As for giant sea creatures, he's poked at them enough (aka learned everything about them) so they're just a regular part of life at sea now. Most of them are food (except the giant octopus, that'd just be weird). Anything giant on land however, that's a different story!
As for the lore; under the cut ;)
He's an ancient deepsea dweller that was attracted to the surface during the early Age of Sail. All the lights during nighttime, the loud sounds, the sinking ships and shipwrecks at the bottom. Everything contributed to pique his curiosity.
Tumblr media
In his eagerness to explore, he did sink the first ship he encountered. Luckily he realized that the little critters aboard can't breathe underwater (or swim very well) so he learned to be more gentle in his approach. He also learned that there's "baby boats" inside the bigger boats that the critters also use (aka. lifeboats).
A small northern island ended up befriending him, in a way. They imitated his blue bioluminescence with a blue stained glass oil lamp and placed at the bow of the ship. To him it was a "friend" signal. The islanders would summon him using a large blowing horn and he'd keep their ship safe during the trading trips.
It became a tradition for the islanders, and he was happy to help his "friends". He loved the sea shanties and he was slowly picking up on their language.
Sadly it ended on a bad note for him, and the islanders by extension, and he returned to the deepest sea again. Not to be distrubed by human activity again until a deepsea rover startle him.

“Meet Surf and Turf, the scrappy ragtag band of oddballs shredding the charts with their rebellious, indie rock style! This motley squad is famous in fringe circles not only for their music, but their heart-stopping competitive battles! With members hailing from all corners of Inkadia and beyond, you’re sure to find something unique in this band’s signature fiery flavor!”
meet my splatband—surf and turf! :D
allow me to briefly introduce these funky creatures [using a writing style inspired by the official splatband intro posts teehee]:
Tumblr media
“Meet Riot, the pistol shrimp with a captivatingly brash personality that leaves her fans wanting more! Hailing from the heart of the Splatlands, she brings the heat with her powerful vocals and thunderous percussion skills! Her commanding attitude renders her the closest thing Surf and Turf has to a leader. Look out for her both on the battlefield and the top charts!”
Tumblr media
“Say hello to Gill, the mellow guitarist and dependable mediator of Surf and Turf! It was his idea to start a band in the first place, with his amicable personality and beaming smile being the spark that would blaze forth into the jamming inferno that we know today! This easygoing everyman works part-time at The Crust Bucket in between his studies at Inkblot Art Academy.”
Tumblr media
“Make way for Null, the elusive vocalist and songwriter of Surf and Turf! Due to her private personality, little is known about this enigmatic Glass Octoling. However, there are rumors that they joined the band soon after escaping from the Deepsea Metro following a deeply traumatic experience…”
Tumblr media
“Be amazed by Selene, the adorable prodigy behind Surf and Turf’s iconic synth! Don’t be fooled by her cute appearance—this sea bunny is nothing short of an agent of chaos! This pint-sized princess is a menace on the battlefield and in the recording booth.”
⋆。°✩
there you have it! i hope you approve of my brain children ^^; let me know who your favorite is, i’m dying to know! hopefully i’ll be able to make more surf and turf content soon~☆

Triple Does Troubles
Some things regarding Meggy's troubles with being fucking up 3 times
- similar to Callie, Meggy has headaches and a few eye problems post-hypnoshades but thankfully not to the point it'd cause trouble for her in the long run, she does need to wear reading glasses now tho and also takes pain killers whenevr the migraines get particularly bad
- Meggy has some pretty bad nightmares regarding her time in the deepsea metro, they've gotten better over the years but they're very persistent, it helps to have someone nearby when she sleeps because it keeps the nightmares at bay
- Meggy has occasional flare ups in the form of intense pain all over or in specific parts of her body because of the sanitisation ink, it used o be MUCH worse post-octo expansion but because of some procedures performed by Dr. E. Gadd and some medicine, it's gotten significantly easier to handle and rarely happens, unless she over exerts herself or has a particularly bad panic attack
- Meggy recently (Post-RotM) has been struggling with newer mammalian instincts such as purring, aggressiveness, along with a whole bunch of other stuff (the amount of times bob has been bitten)
- sometimes she has dreams where she's in the pov of some mammal in a nature documentary and it's REALLY weird but oddly pleasant for some reason???

Deepsea Glass
This is a pre-Splatoon fan fic that takes place in Alterna, days before its destruction.
Selena (Saline, moon) is an analogue for Marina
Kohime (little princess) is an analogue for Pearl
Inspired by the squid ink panels reflecting the desires of humanity.
Read below the cut.
Selena wanted to bash her head against the wall. She was the project lead in Alterna's delusional corporate suicide cult. Sorry, she meant 'Happiness Research Lab', a once important figure in maintaining Alterna's long-term survival, now a haven for madmen demanding humanity return to the irradiated, flooded surface.
Her job was to figure out the logistics of building, and launching, a rocket from deep beneath the sea and into the Earth's soil. Needless to say, all calculations show the probability of successfully launching a rocket deep underwater was literally, no smudging the numbers, 0%. And that's ignoring the readings showing that the surface is still flooded, irradiated, and over 15 degrees hotter than is ideal for agriculture, let alone maintaining human life. And THAT is ignoring the fact that the force of the rocket would fracture the stone of the cavern in which the population is maintained, assuming the psychic backlash of every neuroLCD panel suddenly exploding from energy overload wouldn't kill the population outright.
So obviously, the higher-ups appealed to reason. Or not. Instead, they scrapped the research to start building the rocket. Needless to say, it was now up to Selena to build an anti-gravity device which could withstand the water pressure while her roommate and boss, Kohime, tried desperately to get the company to stop.
It had barely been 60 years since Alterna was finished and colonized, and yet already people were demanding the impossible. Small crowds creating conspiracy theories about the land being just outside the walls, as opposed to the waterlogged crag of the flooded cavern that you can very clearly see if you just switched off one of the panels.
Selena needed a break. She decided, if her job wasn't going to listen to her findings, then she wasn't going to bother staying the full day. Clearly she wasn't alone in this thought, as when she approached the door, she caught her roommate standing outside on her phone. Selena's own phone pinged a notification right as she opened the glass door, greeting the shorter woman's slightly embarrassed face. That didn't last long however, as she begun to speak:
"Oh good. I just texted you." Kohime said. "You wanna head out early?"
"Absolutely." Replied Selena. She was glad that she was living with somebody who had some sense. The two of them grabbed a frozen tofu desert on the way home (most of the non-seafood was tofu, as it was one of the few crops to easily grow down here), and Kohime began to complain.
"Every day. Every goddamn day, these fucking bastards keep fucking ignoring me! 'Oh look, the princess is mad again' like, no shit? I'm trying to keep you alive! I don't care if the goddamn escapists are profitable, we aren't here to make a profit! We need to focus on the future! Making sure there's a planet to live on, not running to our death as fast as possible! What are we, fish to an angler?!"
Selena sighed in agreement. She had nothing to add, as everything she would say has already been said. Instead, she half-listened to her best friend's impatient ramblings while thinking of how to cheer her up later. There was that one project...
"Hey Kohime." Selena interjected. "You remember that old shark movie we watched the other day?"
"Oh yeah, Jaws, right? You wanna watch it again?" Kohime responded.
"We could, but first there's something I want to show you."
Kohime's attention was peaked right as they got home. From the table in the back, Selena grabbed an audio device.
"I came up with this song while thinking of that movie."
"Oh, fresh! Lemme hear!" Kohime slipped the speaker cuff over her left ear. From it emitted a steady, slightly modern approximation of the shrine music her grandmother would play for her. It was a curious sound, but she couldn't figure out what it had to do with...
"Wait a sec. The chorus, is that-?"
A slightly mischievous grin snuck up on Selena's face, "yup. That was made using the two note progression from the really tense scenes!"
Kohime's face lit up like the midday skylight. "That's hilarious AND awesome! Only you could come up with something so crazy, I love it!" A giggle pushes her face into childish glee, while Selena turned to grab something else, hiding her guilty smile.
It's been twelve years now, but she still couldn't get over that phrase from Kohime. 'I love'. It makes her uneasy every time.
"You wanna watch another movie?" Selena asked, "I found another Jaws movie, although I think it's the third one. Don't know if there's a two we're missing."
"Oh hell yeah! Pop it in!"
An hour later, and Selena was thoroughly bored. This was definitely a sequel to the first movie she saw, but it felt half-hearted and phony, like the corporate slogans she had to write for every apartment and street corner back at her old job.
"Are you watching this?" She asked the small woman beside her. No answer. Her roommate had fallen fast asleep, clearly as bored as she was, and had let her head fall against Selena's shoulder as she dozed.
Selena felt a pang in her chest. A muddy feeling that followed every bit of affection Kohime had given her. She stayed like this however, in part to let her old friend rest from the nightmarish days they've had, and in part for the comfort she has in knowing Kohime would always be beside her, ready to take on the world, which day by day became increasingly relevant.
Selena slowly nodded off herself.
That night, an exhausting dream filled her mind. In it, she was swimming up waterfall after waterfall. She strained against the crashing current, believing that soon, she would find rest. But no rest would come. At the final hurdle, the last jump, she dove straight into the maw of a hungry bear, wearing the Alterna logo on it's forehead, and announcing her retirement.
Selena woke with a start. It was midnight, and she felt dumb for being stressed about such a wild dream. She didn't question why she had it though. She had been working too hard for too little. The research she conducted, the machines she built, all wasted on projects that would kill her led by people who would never listen. She needed to quit. She could do so easily in fact. Sleeping in her lap, having moved herself in her sleep, was the very person she worked under. All she would have to do is wake her and tell her she couldn't work there anymore.
And leave Kohime to fight alone.
Selena let her head fall back onto the couch cushion. She would work tomorrow, if for no other reason than to ease her guilty conscience. To make sure some semblance of sanity stayed in this broken order, just because she knows Kohime would never stop fighting. She's always been bull-headed, and they needed that now more than ever.
"It's is time for your shift at the Happiness Research Facility, Citizen 2117: Assistant Director KOHIME.
It is time for your shift at the Happiness Research Facility, Citizen 2224: Project Manager SELENA.
Have a productive day."
Selena's second waking was a slow groggy ordeal. She had barely gotten back to sleep, and it feels like she just had that nightmare. Clearly some time has passed, as Kohime was sitting next to her. Unusually though, she wasn't dressed yet. Instead, she had an uncharacteristically uneasy glower in her face.
"Oh, you're up." Selena noted.
A long, heavy silence dulled the air at her voice. Kohime continued to stare, pressure rising from her sleep-matted hair. Eventually, she spoke:
"Selena."
At her word, a deafening pause filled the room.
"Do you ever feel like...something big is coming? Like..."
"The end of the world?" Selena finished her thought. "Of course. Every day. It bears down like an ocean of pressure every time I have to think about that goddamn rocket."
"Exactly!" The smaller woman replied "it all feels like we're marching into the end, all over some vague dream!" Tension filled her voice. She lacked energy, however. Selena took notice and pressed the back of her hand to Kohime's forehead.
"! W- what are you doing?" Kohime was flustered.
"You're overheated." Selena spoke.
"Well, that's 'cause you-"
"No, I mean actually" she wouldn't let Kohime finish. Now wasn't the time. "You're getting sick. R.C.A.?"
Selena called to the AI transcriber installed as living assistance. "Contact the HRF. We're taking today off."
"Very well." The voice responded.
Kohime protested: "No! Without us, who knows what those idiots will do?!"
Selena was worried of course, but she wasn't going to let her friend suffer. "How smart do you think they actually are. The lunatics wanna fire a rocket in a closed cave, through the ocean. You think they can think through the logistics without us?" She prattled, hoping she was right. It was her last hope at this point.
"..."
"Come on. You need to rest, and they'll never figure out how to actually build a rocket in the few days we'd be gone. Plus when we get back, you can rub the fact that you were right in their faces."
Kohime couldn't help but laugh at that. "As if. They're heads would be so far up their asses, they wouldn't be able to hear me." She joked, coughing near the end of her sentence.
Selena chuckled back, "in that case, I'll build you a megaphone. Nobody'd be able to ignore you then. Better yet, I'll build a bomb-"
"Okay, stop right there crazy lady. Don't give R.C.A. the wrong idea. Plus, that'd totally defeat the purpose of stopping the rocket in the first place."
The two joked like that for a few more minutes, until the tension left Kohime's shoulders, and she nodded off again.
It would take a week before Kohime would recover. The anxiety from the escape project pushing them to the boiling point. It was only at the end of that week when she had rested enough to feel like working again, and scheduled their shifts for the next day.
When Selena woke, from her bed this time, to the work day she'd been dreading, she noticed that Kohime had already left. Nothing unusual there. She was always a bit of a workaholic, and the praise helped feed her ego. Selena would finish her breakfast before heading out.
Upon opening the front door, however, she was blinded by a scorching white light. The skylight above them was in overdrive, forcing her eyes down. On the porch, collapsed to her knees, eyes wide despite the overbearing light above, was Kohime. Her face was filled with fear as defeat killed what little hope had remained.
Fearfully checking her friends help, Selena would follow her unbroken stare to the neuroLCD panel on the West edge. There, where once was the image of a field with sparse green trees, now stood the image of a white rocket ship, repeating down the walls. The grass, which once had a photo-like quality, now rustled as if blown by the wind. Sparse depictions of clouds were circling the blinding sun.
To any other, it would be an echo of their deep-seated desire to reach the upper world. To the two women here, however, it was a monument to their failure.
Selene rushed to the far moat, from the shore of which she grabbed a raft, unconcerned with ownership. Kohime followed behind, having barely broken from her stupor, and praying her closest could find a miracle. The datapad Selene brought was connected to a terminal on the wall. The screen behind it flickered off, exposing behind it the rocket they had lobbied so hard against, somehow completed.
Selene swallowed her fear as the datapad downloaded the Alterna Logs only people from the Happiness Research Facility has access to. The log read as follows:
"
HRFLog004.02: The Divide
As humanity began it's foolhardy errand to escape their salvation, a small group of resisters, lead by those scientists from the first generation, had resisted the change.
Amongst these were two high-ranking officials who had researched the surface, and concluded escape would doom humanity. These two would be the head speakers, and last bastions, of the Preservationists.
Rather than heed their warnings, those who profited from the Escapist movement would instead sabotage the resistance, slipping a mild poison into one researcher's water.
With the voice of opposition in recovery, the Preservationists were left without a rallying point, and a new fervor would grip the escapists. Thus, the rocket would be built in record time.
Awaiting further data.
"
Selena's heart dropped. A deep, fervent rage built in her heart. They had nearly killed her closest friend, over this pipe dream?! They would doom humanity for their pride?!
Her rage was interrupted, however, by a deafening scream of anguish. Having read the report on her own datapad, Kohime collapsed into a ball, shaking the raft beneath them. Selena steadied herself, then crouched to her friend.
"IT'S OVER. ITS THE END OF THE WORLD. WE'RE GONNA DIE..."
She was yelling, but a defeated misery filled her voice. She was not just screaming out of anguish, but because she couldn't find the strength to control her voice. Selena watched in pain as, for the second time ever, she watched her friend's heart break. She grabbed the girl and held her close, ignoring the pain in her ears. She needed to help her, to make her happy. Something to make her smile. Something she...
A familiar tune resonated from the wall behind her. The neuroLCDs picked up on Selena's desire, and reflected a memory of a week ago, the smiling face of her closest friend. The sound that played was the song she wrote, and Kohime took notice. Her crying slowed as she looked towards the reactivated panel. She couldn't help but laugh.
"Look, it's us." She barely managed to croak through tears. She hummed sobbing in a strained voice to the song that played, while holding desperately to Selena's waist.
This brief reprieve would not last. Those other researchers would hear the song, and, seeing the crying girl, wished for her to be happy. The rocket would be starting it's test launch after all. Soon, she could go home.
As the song spread, more and more people would hear it, carrying with it the image of the surface and the big white rocket. Soon, people began to sing along, making up lyrics that blurred together, as an anthem to the freedom they strived towards. All the while, the woman who wrote the song wondered how her feelings were strong enough to override the panel.
She wouldn't have long to wonder, though, as the nearest panel changed again, this time to a scene all too familiar. A scene she had avoided for so long. As it played, the sobbing in her arms changed to a wretched scream.
At once, two voices spoke. The same person twice, one screaming to a world that would not hear, the other whispering to her closest friend, who alone would listen to her once and once again.
"Selena"
"HOW DARE YOU"
"Is it alright if we talked?"
"HOW COULD YOU DO THIS?!"
"I wanted to get something off my chest..."
"THAT WAS HER SONG"
"It feels like we've known each other forever"
"THAT WAS HER LIFE"
"And I needed to tell you"
"YOU CAN'T TAKE IT FROM HER"
"Just how important you are to me."
"YOU CAN'T TAKE IT FROM US"
"Selena"
"ALL OF YOU"
"I love you"
"I HATE YOU"
"I love you so much."
"I WILL NEVER FORGIVE YOU"
"You don't have to respond"
"YOU SHOULD HAVE LISTENED"
"And I'm sure you don't feel the same way"
"SHE CARED FOR YOU ALL"
"But I wanted to be honest"
"AND YOU BETRAYED HER"
"I've always felt this way"
"I'LL NEVER TRUST YOU AGAIN"
"And maybe, if you're willing"
"YOU ALL GET WHAT YOU DESERVE"
"We could go out some time?"
"FOR KILLING HER!"
A lump held in Selena's throat. She knew what was about to happen. She felt it. She tasted it. Regret boiled in her stomach. And here at the end, she could only manage one more sentence.
"Kohime,"
"Kohime-"
Behind the wall, the rocket's thrusters burst to life.
"I'm sorry."
At her final word, the pain of her closest friend before her once and once again, the wall cracked. The crying smile shattered into a thousand pieces, lacerating the overflowing wrath. Selena tried to hold onto Kohime's dying body, but was pushed back by the torrent erupting from the wall in front of her.
As Selena fell deeper and deeper beneath the flooding water, shards of neuroLCD shone around her. In each reflected the memories that replayed in her mind. Not the plans to maintain Alterna, and not the speeches she gave to the reckless businessmen that doomed them.
Her memories were of the happy times. The days in University she spent learning. The machines she managed to make float in the air. The simple Japanese style tune she composed from the Jaws theme. The grin on Kohime's face when she showed her.
The times she and Kohime would complain about work. The praise she received when Kohime was in charge. The sleeping face of Kohime resting her head on her shoulder. The day Kohime confessed, and how she stayed beside her despite rejection.
Selena scolded herself as air left her lungs. She should have spent more time with Kohime. She should have done what she could to make her happy. She should have humored her, just to see her smile one more time. She should have loved her.
Oh.
She already loved her.
Selena's thoughts were clear in her final moments. She already loved Kohime. She had spent her life seeking that attention, that love, which was always reciprocated, and she never paid it any mind, taking for granted the bond they had shared.
Warm tears of regret mixed with the bloody seawater, as Selena's thoughts betrayed her feelings. Her love. Her fear. Her shame. Reflected in the shards of the neuroLCD, her memories changed to the visage of Kohime. Her smiles, her rage, her sadness, her love. All surrounding her in the deep dark ocean. Even as her sight went dark and her thoughts slowed, all she could see was Kohime's proud, loving face, smiling back at her, as if everything would be alright.
She should have loved her.
She should have loved her.
She should have...
Tens of thousands of years later, a young woman, barely 18, nervously approached the loud stranger on Mt. Nantai. Just a few months earlier, she had defected from the army she was raised by, inspired by a strange song she had heard. A simple, repetitive shrine song performed by enemy mercenaries. One which filled her with fear, love, and a dream of freedom. One which, two days earlier, she heard screamed from the other side of the mountain, as if sung by a particularly skilled jet turbine.
Five years after, at the height of her career, Marina Ida ducks backstage at the end of her band's world tour. At her side, marches the proud woman who found her, one Pearl Houzuki.
The small woman looks back at her, and flashes a proud grin, as if telling her that everything would be alright. At this, only one thought echoed in Marina's head.
I love her.

Sorry it took me so long to answer these! Anyway Eights next:
Eight is the calmest, second to Three lol; while her and Four match each other’s energy sometimes. She’s actually super stubborn. Once her mind is made up, good luck changing it. She got some memories back from the memcakes in the metro, but she got most of them back from the memverse.
Also Eight idolizes Marina a lot, causing her to dress very similarly. :)
Contrary to popular belief, she holds barely any resentment to Three nor the NSS. She’s sees Three (and the others) as someone who was following orders. She in a way pity’s the NSS (and by extension C. Cuttlefish) because she feels they’re uneducated and misguided. She’s more mad at their government, the NSS aren’t the ones keeping them out of Inkopolis.
The Octolings aren’t the ones subject to propaganda and indoctrination, Inklings are.
Talking about Eight without mentioning how things work in the domes would be a crime:
1. Octolings are rarely raised by their parents, parental mortality is basically a definite. (Her mom died shortly after she was born, she was raised in a training dojo by a former octosniper).
2. Because parental mortality is so common, many octarians are “test tube” babies and are adopted out.
3. Octolings are not mind controlled, the glasses help with night vision. Night vision is actually a rare trait for them to have, you wanna know who naturally does? Inklings.
Fun fact - Many Inklings are from the depths, including Three’s relatives. (The Deepsea Metro connects them to the surface, this is a popular way for octolings to try to sneak out to the surface).
4. A lot of people love and respect DJ Octavio, some think he’s a little weird at worst. Despite losing her memories, she still has an innate respect for him.
5. Octolings also aren’t forced to stay in the domes by their government, they are forced out by the inkling government. They are free to go anywhere else, but Inkopolis has an allure to many.
6. The NSS has a very bad reputation in the domes, a surprise to no one. The ones with the worst rep is C. Cuttlefish, Three and Four. Three’s rep is iffy though, some admire her but most fear her.
7. All Octolings have venom, which can be transferred through bites or scratches from their claws. This also makes their ink more abrasive, with the side effect of their weapons filters getting clogged super easily. (Octarian modeled filters don’t have this problem.)
8. I imagine that octolings are extremely tough to fight, so Three and Four were both taught to avoid them and only fight them if necessary. They usually ended up depending on specials.
9. Octarians lost the war because of the sheer number of inklings, they were overwhelmed.
10. Octarians and Salmonoids have an alliance and share territory with each other, inklings are the only ones getting invaded.
Side note: I know I like to draw a bunch of gay stuff with her and Three, but I actually don’t imagine them dating until after Alterna. Mostly because Three wanted to get herself sorted (mentally) first and Eight was happy to wait. Forever if she wished.

About Agent 3's Sanitation Scars
aka, agent oc lore post
this is a bit long, sorry about that! ill place it all under a cut so no one has to scroll through it all if they dont want to read, note there's some colored text + some drawings
ever since alister (3) and josh (8) were rescued from the deepsea metro and tartar was defeated, callie and marie have been very worried. josh has his own host of issues, but alister's are much more... visible. doctors have no idea how to treat alister's condition, and have just been monitoring his healing process. alister doesnt remember a thing about the sanitation, despite having been only partially sanitized. all witnesses referred to it as a form of mind control.
marie had asked zara (4) about what she had seen first, she seemed much more approachable about the subject. this was under a week after the rescue:
zara: i rescued him and josh from the blender, yeah. though he got ambushed by a strange telephone as soon as we tried to follow josh through the escape route. i managed to dodge the telephone's attacks, but... yeah, alister wasn't as lucky.
marie: do you remember his appearance?
Tumblr media
zara: that strange.. i dont even know, goop? just- that strange stuff wrapped around his head. it looked like it was digging into the back of his head. i remember... before he got completely taken over by the strange.. thing and tied me up... he looked at me with.. fear. fear ive never seen before, it had so much.. pain and certainty in it. like he was thinking "im going to die"
marie: oh... that sounds terrifying. was there anything else...?
zara: he... he said one thing. while the goopy stuff was being planted onto him. i dont remember it completely, he whispered it, but he said "so this is it. it... hurts" it... scared me. marie, you know ive been working with him on agent stuff for the past year! he's never sounded so... so... you know.
she didn't have any further comments.
when he could handle the question, marie had asked josh as well. this took place a month after the incident:
marie: so... are you sure you're ready to think about what happened again? i know it's still very recent, even if some time has passed.
josh: y.. yes. i am sure. it is the less painful parts, so i do not mind as much, i think.
marie: alright... what do you remember?
josh: alister, he... he looks like he was in pain. a lot of pain. during the battle, he missed lots of attacks due to it, im sure. his hands had shaking the whole time then.
josh: once we reach the surface and.. things were better again, he was no longer being controlled. and the sight... i dont know the word in inklish, the closest would be scary, i believe. it was... deep scar. everything around the scar had a greenish color to it. he could not see well when he woke up, and he mentioned being in so much pain...
marie: oh, oh jeez... i can see why the bandage was put on it now.
josh: it was the best we have at the time. the one he has now is... much better.
marie: yeah... do you want to stop? you look uncomfortable..
josh: ...yes. thinking of it again... i-it is making me upset more than i realize it could. i am sorry
he couldn't make any further comments.
extra visual of how alister looked at this time:
Tumblr media
extra info: his eyesight improved over the first couple of months, though it stopped eventually. he has blurred vision. he has glasses that do slightly correct it, but he never wears them. i imagine he shows some symptoms that would correlate to right hemisphere brain damage. but i need to put more research into that first

I am going to do some infodumping about my silly lil 1776×Splatoon au because its taking over my brain ^_^
I'm also gonna make a specific tag for this: Splatoon 1776
Alr so number one, uhhhhhhh TJ
I've decided that's he's gonna be Agent 3 because like, why the fuck not?? Also, JA is gonna be Agent 8 so ^_^
So like, he lives a quiet life and enjoys the company of his intimates, RHL, his wife, Martha (yes, they're all gonna be legally adults), and a few others, depending on what I do with this au in future. He also plays the violin really well, to the point some believe that he should make music for a career, but he really doesn't want to. Too much attention and not such a quiet life
As an agent, he works hard, stays focused, and gets the job done!!!! He was really surprised when he saw JA in the deepsea metro, and even more surprised to see Abigail there. He has the scar from tartars hypnosis (I think that's what it's called? I'm not sure, sorry 😓😓)
He also mains the Octobrush
Next we have John Dickinson as Agent 4!!!!
Again, he was chosen for why the fuck not. Also, because I'm a strong believer that Parallel Canon is Agent 4, and one thing that happens in 1776 is that Adams and Dickinson fight.
He tends to just do his thing, ig (I'll have to ask @pingskumonium for help with Dickinson 😓) I just know that's he's friends with George Read, that he doesn't write straight, and that he disagreed with JA 🙏🙏
I think he'd either main the Splattershot or be a tenta missiles spammer with the Reef Lux 450
Next is JA as 8, as mentioned twice before ^_^
I chose him to be 8 because, well, their whole thing is like escaping the deepsea metro, saving the octolings, and defeating evils (eg, tartar, order). I've also took some creative liberties (with help from coroika) to put Abigail with him because he deserves his wife 🫶
So like, they got married and lived happily together in Octo Valley until she just. Disappeared. That's around when he encountered TJ (3) and Capn Cuttlefish, all three of which were attacked, and he woke up in the deepsea metro separated from 3, and everything I'm the Octo Expansion. Now, here's where more of my ideas come in. In 'Fake Plastic Station', Adams doesn't actually splat Abigail, who is the last sanitised octoling there, and instead spares her because he recognises her just ever so slightly. Also because she dropped her glasses and broke them after the ink jet (she has never used one until then), which the mechanism took as her being splatted. Therefore, the two return to the station together, as she no longer has the glasses (I'm like, 90% sure they have hypnosis powers. Even if they don't, this is my au so :333)
And the rest of Octo Expansion goes the way it does
Abigail is only sanitised because I wanted an excuse to put her in Side Order
JA would main Enperry Splat Dualies and Abigail would main the Octoshot. Change my mind 😋

Wait can you do a dynamic explanation for how your oc acts with us(Yuu)?
Depends honestly, cause I have Eldritch Prefect, the Caretaker, the Janitor and the Regular Prefect to think about, buuuut since I don't want the post to get too long, Imma talk about the OC's in the house pet au.
For the Caretaker, Antas is another pet, but one that ran away from his owner after he attacked her live on television. Usually, driders such as he are considered to be dangerous pests, so when they show behavior such as that, they'd be put down without hesitation. Basically, he's a mini drider that wanders from house to house, hoping to find a cool little corner to spin his web in and rest. He does not look good, all malnourished and dehydrated since he does not know how to hunt for himself. But, of course, the Caretaker eventually finds him around in their garden and they have to take him in. He had to be in isolation for quite a bit cause he did not relax around the other pets. He needed to have small bits of exposure, over time until he eventually comes out of his shell. And man did he. His spider half started getting more and more vibrant until eventually they started to bloom in some colorful lilac butterfly scales on his abdomen with a stain-glass like pattern. But yeah, he very much ends up attached to the Caretaker at the hip. Would try to crawl up their leg and onto their shoulder. Sometimes will hide in high places and jump right on their head. He's a quiet little thing, but the little shakes of his limbs tell all of his happiness. He can still fit on your hand, just so you know.
Valenio in the house pet au is another pet that managed to escape his kidnappers. He's never had an owner but he did have a friend that he liked to visit cause they fed him all sorts of weird foods he's never find in the deepsea. He had a lot of little guppies following him around, hiding in his very long trails of frills and fins. He doesn't look that different from his regular au self, just vastly smaller. Though, he is the length of your leg. He is big, though not as heavy as you might think. His little human torso, you can grab with one hand, but just barely. But, anyways, Caretaker was having a beach day but had to cut it short when they found a beached Valenio, very much heavily injured with all the little guppies trying to keep hiding in what was left of his fins. At home, Valenio has a tank all to himself. It's a huge tank as well, almost reaching the ceiling. You need a ladder to reach but it's all fine. Caretaker did try to take him back to the sea, but nope, Valenio is staying planted in the tank. He likes it. You can't move him. Just you try. Much like the other pets, he's not the smartest. He tried to get the Caretaker in the tank with him, cause he didn't know they couldn't breathe underwater. Also, despite the large size of his tank, it's the easiest thing to clean cause he goes out of his way to help you out. Though he does have a meticulous system that you have to follow or he will give you the silent treatment.
Oh and the guppies are weird little things. They're these shapeless forms of ink, they tend to take on the form of clione but sometimes they look like jellyfish. Either way, it's a sentient thing that hide within the fins and frills of Valenio. They're not a hazard, nor does it bother him.
Vio is a another human, a brat of a human fae, but a human nonetheless. He's attending the college nearby and is trying to expand his social network in order to make something of himself and his family. To that point, he actually does, initially, look down on the existence of the Caretaker since all he's heard about them is that they're a shut-in that everyone else spoils. So, to his eyes, the Caretaker is a leech. Basically, he's rather ignorant of the plight of the Caretaker cause he has tunnel vision on his own goals. He has magic, so the job industry and the education system treats him as well. Vio has his own troubles to deal with, so he sees his efforts and his well treatment as a result of all his hard work rather than it being something he was always going to get. He will get humbled when he sees the stacks and stacks of rejection letters on the Caretaker's shelf.
Cheridal is a red sea snake that has taken up home in a little ice cream shop by the sea. His owners really do love him to death, but they can't be with him all the time, so they arranged for him to be staying with the Caretaker whenever winter rolls around. His owners don't live near here and they're hesitant on taking him with them as they don't want him to be too far from home. Cheridal is actually smaller than Jamil, thinner too, but that doesn't stop him from play fighting with all the pets. Hell, he'll even play fight with the Caretaker. He'll beat them one day, he swears! He really has too much energy, so when he's not wrestling, he's usually swimming in the pond outside. If the Caretaker is not looking, he will try to sneak into the freezer for any frozen treats that might be in there. He's a weird creature. He likes to take an ice cube, toss it to the floor and skid it across the floor and chase after it.
And Tul'Veith. He's another pet, a ghostly looking immortal jellyfish. His upper body is human, the rest below is the jellyfish, but all of him is slightly see through. You can see his bones. Anyways, Tul'Veith is very much a sickly little thing that was not taken care of right with his previous owner. The novelty of owning a unique pet wore off so that owner tied him up in a bag and threw him in a river. And, luckily, the Caretaker found them while they were on their hike. By the time the Caretaker took him to the vet, he had already started regressing back into a polyp. So, all the Caretaker could do was place him in a quarantine tank and wait for him to grow. And grow he did. Into the tiniest of baby pets. Here's the start of a new life for Tul'Veith, the strange little creature that still, somehow, remembers everything. He'll be staying here for a bit. Tul'Veith is very much loving despite all that he went through. Out of all the pets, this one has to be the most well behaved, but is also the kind that doesn't have much regard for the state of his body. He gets injured oh so easily and he knows it, but it doesn't stop him from playing around with the other pets when he can. He actually weirds a lot of the other pets out cause they're not used to someone as small as he. They look at him and register a baby, but he does not act like one at all, so they take caution and tend to just, distance themselves. Seriously, he's like the size of your pinky. He's tiny.
