The Decimaar Blade
Another mini-comic :D [Previous one]
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
After defeating Orlagk and claiming the Decimaar Blade for himself, Gunmar modified it a bit to his liking.
And in fact, Gunmar hasn't touched a woman nor had a partner, so that joke just went completely over his head.
(The blade was different when Orlagk wielded it:
Tumblr media Tumblr media
I headcanon that Gunmar changed its appearance.)
Gunmar had worked for a blacksmith as a teen, so he has some experience in weapon-making.
And the "detachable pommel and the hilt being hollow" will play a part on something in this AU.
Hint; it involves these guys:

Also, have this as a little bonus:

To the surprise of a thrall or two, Venga was not riding on the back of her older brother, Sturgeous, today. No, the little doe-eyed whelp was trotting along on all fours her large eyes fixed on her sire. Though her mass was 60% mane, that mane kept her warm in the darklands and was extra fluffy as it withstood the day's chill. "Wenk!" she barked up at her father as she approached the throne. She paused at the foot of the crucible, looking up at him as the whelp tried to remember something. It took her but a moment, but she lowered her head in a baby's bow like the others did before trotting up to the dark underlord's throne. "Wenk!" she barked again and pushed on her father's knee.
Gunmar immediately set aside Decimaar. He'd been sharpening the blade when she walked in.
He rumbled a greeting, reaching down and lifting her into his lap.
"Independent today, aren't you?" He commented, leaning forward and touching his brow to hers. "What else do you have to say?"

Lights and Shadows of Camelot: Chapter 21
King Arthur couldn’t believe his eyes as Bular ran towards him, twin swords raised. He took Excalibur and stopped the strike.
“Where is Morgana?” he asked. “Or this is just a war between Trolls and Camelot?”
Bular bared his teeth. The witch had only told them to debilitate Arthur until she arrived. Bular really wanted to fight the Trollhunter, for the two had a long story, so he was angry he had to fight the human king.
“Who cares?” he snarled. “I’ll be drinking from your skull when she gets here!”
However, Gunmar was having a bad time. Jim had managed to jump over the Bridge, trying not to give away the plan. Daylight was no rival for Gunmar’s Decimaar Blade and the swords clashed several times. It was such a spectacle to be seen; however, the rest of the battlefield was pure chaos.
Claire was trembling. Just as she had feared, it was as if her powers had disappeared the second Morgana had taken the Shadow Staff. Douxie and her were now free to move and the wizard took a step forward, drying his tears with the back of his hand. He crossed the golden circle of light.
“A hopeless apprentice and an insecure witch.” Morgana cackled. “I’ll be reuniting with my brother in no time.”
“Come on, Claire.” Douxie said, his bracelet shining as he performed some hand movements. The girl couldn’t move. Archie tried to give her a gentle shove. She might be covered in shining metal from head to toe, but she felt as vulnerable as ever.

I am so honored that my submission was accepted for this zine! The size of it had to be shortened in order to comfortable fit all the amazing art and stories, but I'm still happy how this all turned out ☺️
Please look at this amazing TOA Zine, a real love letter from and to all of us fans! And please feel free the read the full story submission below✨️
It Began With A Name
The troll that would be later known as Gunmar never did understand the importance of family. He came into to this world alone, crawling from the dead remains of Trollkinds first Heartstone full grown and very very hungry.
The first years of his life were basically a blur as he roamed about the continent. Killing when he became hungry or defensive, the most delicious meats not coming from the wild animals of the woodlands or the domesticated livestock of the fields but of the humans who toiled in them. Delicious fleshy-bags of meat, that crunched so satisfyingly between his jaws.
At times he would meet supposed others of his kind, many of those Trolls who would just run from his presence or others who attack and curse his existence. He paid no mind, such weaklings were below him. Below his strength. He was the strongest and deadliest being in this world, nothing else mattered but himself and the Hunger he proved to satisfy.
That is till he met HIM.
Their encounter wasn't anything new to him, countless groups of trolls and their leaders would approach him. Accusing him of invading their territory or attempting to forcibly recruit him into their tribe. No matter which they all fell before the deadly might of his bare claws.
But he was different, Orglak the Oppressor was a troll whose strength not only matched his own but his skill with the blade a deadly force against him. Try as he might, the dark stone troll couldn’t land a significant blow against the Gum-Gum leader who smirked as he dodged each swipe of his claws as if he was still a clumsy newborn. Soon enough Gunmar hide burned with each slash made by Orglak’s legendary Decimaar Blade, he was on the ground forced to look at the Gum-Gum leader feeling the sword just under his neck.
“Your a lot stronger than I gave you credit for, child of the dead Heartstone” sneered Orglak, his blood red eyes glowing with interest “Promise to kneel before me and you’ll live to see the next night”
The dark troll's only response was a snarl as he swiped the blade tip away, cutting him badly as he lunged once more at the Gum-Gum leader. Before the sword hilt hit him square between his horns and the world went black.
He woke up to the sound of crackling fire and the smell of roasted meat, rearing up from the ground he saw Orglak sitting by the fire beside him while the soldiers from his party set up camp. He was ready to attack but no sooner did he move Orglak just casually flashed his sword making him hesitate. For the first time in his life the troll has encountered a being far stronger than him, it was frustrating and unnerving.
Especially when Orglak chuckled at him.
“I see you're awake, good, good” he said before lifting something from the fire.
His mouth watered at the leg of meat, its juices dripping from the crispy flesh. He moved to take it from the Gum-Gum but was roughly grabbed by his horns.
“Wait” Orglak said sharply
The troll growl turned into a whine as he held up his hands to silently ask for the meat. Satisfied, the Gum-Gum chieftain placed it into his waiting hands. He sunk his teeth eagerly in the food but he noticed that the grip of his horns didn’t fade. Orglak claws moved from his horns to then gently pet at the top of his hair.
“Hmm….” Orglak hummed in thought “....Gunmar…”
The troll perked up with a mouthful of meat.
Orglak chuckled darkly as he patted his head “Gunmar! Yes! A fine name”!
And that was how the troll born from the first Heartstone was named Gunmar.
Soon enough Gunmar did kneel before the Gum-Gum chieftain, who was now his leader. He learned a great deal of things from the troll and his tribe. How to wield a sword was a start, then it was learning to lead raids and how to subdue other tribes, and then who their enemies were.
Turns out those fleshbags were a lot more troublesome than Gunmar thought, especially with their allies. The mage Merlin and his foolish little follower the Trollhunter.
Yes Gunmar learned a great many things, even the benefits of living in a tribe like this. What power it gave one to command so many trolls, ones who unhesitantly served you through loyalty or fear.
But still Gunmar couldn’t understand families.
At worst it seemed like a treasonous thing to allow outside loyalty from one chieftain to another, and at the least it seemed like such a weakness. Tying yourselves to someone that could just be used against you.
But if he could see himself close enough to call someone as close as kin…Gunmar would think of Orglak.
Orglak who named him, Orglak who showed him how to swing a sword, Orglak who taught him the most proficient way to butcher his enemies, Orglak who recognized his strength and made him his general, Orglak…who would now stare at him with suspicious and newly formed contempt..
Not a surprise given that Gunmar had recently been far more bolder in his dissatisfaction in Orglak policies regarding how their tribe was run. The Gum-Gum’s had the potential to be more than just a band of marauders but a mighty military force that could rule this continent, but Orglak kept hesitating or more so kept refusing to let Gunmar make any changes on how things were done.
Gunmar was a threat to Orglak power, that was something every member of the tribe could see. So in the end they came to blows.
Orglak was as strong as before but Gunmar was now even stronger. And at the end of the fight while Gunmar might have lost one of his eyes, Orglak lost his head.
But as the crowd cheered and hollered at his victory, Gunmar couldn’t help but stare at the gray rubble that had once been his leader. Seeming to debate something the new Gum-Gum chieftain reached down to take a piece of stone from the pile.
Gunmar wasn’t sure what he was thinking, what he wanted exactly, but a part of him couldn’t see the legacy of the great Orglak the Oppressor fade from this world forever.
The first troll who took him from the wilds of the woods and showed him his true potential.
So in the privacy of his tent Gunmar held the stone he acquired before reaching at his chest and pulling off a piece of his own flesh. Then just as he observed other troll couples do during their union ceremonies he combined the stones together between his hands. Breathing hard Gunmar forced the life energy, the one that thrummed deep in his flesh from the first Heartstone, and sent it into the newly made Birthstone.
It was sometime in the later months Gunmar was looking at the Birthstone in interest, with the egg wobbling back and forth inside the nest he made it.
All of a sudden a tiny little fist burst from the stone and all at once a mound of dark fur tumbled out. Gunmar’s one eye was wide as the tiny creature practically hissed and spat around, its pudgy paws swatting at the air. The warlord reached over to brush the ebony locks that matched his own but soon the little red eyes focused on him. Gunmar stopped, sure that there was a look of recognition in those familiar crimson eyes. But instead the little babe snapped onto his fingers, already so hungry.
A rumble emerged from Gunmars chest, then turned into a full belly laugh.
The whelp stopped his chewing to stare at him curiously.
“Bular” Gunmar said slowly, tasting the name of his new son.
Maybe Gunmar still didn’t understand the meaning of family, but he did know the importance of HIS family. His son, who was now a part of the bright and glorious future he planned on creating for the both of them.
“Yes, Bular” said the warlord tickling his dagger like nails under the whelps chin making him giggle “What a fine name”!

My entry for Stricklake month, week 2: Royalty/Guardian. I picked Guardian!
Tumblr media
In this(taking place during season three of Trollhunters), Gunmar plans to use his Decimaar Blade to mind control Walter into fighting against Jim, and then kill Walter afterwards. Barbara uses her broom as a weapon to defend Walter with, but he decides to guard her from Gunmar by getting ready to transform into his winged troll form and fly off with her.

You can blame the anime Ushio and Tora for this idea.
Trollhunters but every time Jim uses the amulet, he slowly becomes a troll.
Let me explain. In the show Ushio and Tora, there's an weapon called the Beast Spear. A magical item that grants the wielder the power to slay evil spirits. Though there is a cost as the wielder will eventually become a beast, specifically Tora's species: Azafuse for 2015 reboot or Bakaneko in the original series.
Amulet of Daylight had always been made for Trollkind but it never gotten a human holder before. Well, at least until it chosen a certain Jim Lake Jr. Knowing who made the amulet and Merlin's skewed viewpoint about how things should be handled... I won't be surprised if he added such a function.
Now it starts as a slow process that wouldn't be noticable at first. His skin begins to feel dry, grows a bit hairier, teeth looking a bit sharp. Subtle changes as the deeper the transformation, the harder it is to reverse it. Next an odd coloration to his skin akin to bruising in some spots alongside minor headaches and toothaches.
The signs something is wrong will become noticeable to Jim when he finds dry blood on his pillow from the small horn nubs and some teeth fall out to be replaced with troll tusks later. His skin drying out until it flakes off to reveal soft clay skin like a scorpion molting. Further changes are more painful though mainly cause it involves his insides.
Jim's skin hardening to stone, his ring finger merging with the middle, horn growth, and two toes on both feet merge together aren't gonna be as painful as this. If I were to describe the pain, I say it's like being molded, stretched then dried in fire similar to clay. Albeit the clay is human bones and organs.
Things only get worse as certain items such as the Gritshaka, Gravesand and the Triumbric Stones accelerates the process. Yup! Jim's Eclipse armor practically triples the transformation speed but also set his new troll species: Gumm-Gumm. Specifically one just like Gunmar albeit more like an opposite. If the Gumm Gumm King is Yin, then Jim shall be his Yang.
He purifies those converted by Gunmar, undo Creeper's Sun poison and potentially so much more. A living manifestation of what a Heartstone is meant to do than Jim's twisted opposite. To heal instead of rot.
Jim's transformation would fully be completed during his stay in the Darklands as Gunmar's Decimaar Blade will speed up the process as well. He got his wish in a way. Jim replaced his son species wise but he will never control the Trollhunter.
Reunions for Team Trollhunters and the Lake Family is gonna be very awkward. Everyone, especially Jim, needs a shit ton of hugs. Someone needs to let Barbara whale on Merlin with a broom.
I just realized an Ushio and Tora AU would definitely fit with Draal as Tora while Jim takes Ushio's role. Although Jimbo will need a curse item like a prototype or twisted amulet replica and accidentally turns Draal into a Demon Troll using it. It takes place at least a year before Trollhunters canon mainly for shenanigans. Kanijar completely unaware of his son getting into trouble and then finding out in the most insane way sounds hilarious to me.
Bular fits too as Tora was quite antagonistic at the beginning. He also ate humans until he was imprisoned. Bular had been kidnapped by humans before in canon so it would be plausible to have him sealed up in someone's basement by an object like a long sword.
That's my opinion anyway.
Edit: You guys can also have a shot at this! I crave chaos and I love to see what people can come up with.

Alright, if Loki's off limits, what about Gunmar vs. Mirage?
*Puts on Death Battle hat*
Now this is one that we can look at with some science. (Or at least a lot of googling)
Gunmar the Black, Trollkind's greatest threat and tyrant.
vs
Mirage the Soulcaller. Travelling bard and former adventurer.
After discussing the feats of Gunmar with @katanamasako and @xdeusxmachinax, (Since Mirage is my character. I know what she do.) the math was done, the numbers were crunched and simulations were made. It's time for a
DEATHBATTLE!!!
Tumblr media
Centuries ago, when humans and trolls started fighting each other for control over the Earth, it created the War for the Surface Lands, and there were many deaths. This led the first Heartstone to rot from within, and Gunmar was born from the corruption and darkness. Joining under the warchief, Orlagk, Gunmar began his bloody conquest.
He killed man and troll alike with his inhuman strength and seeming indestructibility from kings of other troll tribes to human settlements. It was only when he betrayed his Gummgumm leader that he finally took damage. Losing an eye to Orlagk, and gaining the sword Decimaar.
Later, Decimaar would get an improvement from Morgana, and the ability to warp the minds of those with weaker wills than Gunmar to be his eternal slave unless entering an area that cancels magic.
Even after being sealed in the Darklands for centuries, Gunmar retained his ambition and hunger for power. Only he was thwarted by the Trollhunter. Merlin's chosen warrior with the power of the eclipse blade. Said to the only weapon able to deal Gunmar a mortal wound.
Gunmar's strength and indestructible nature are by far his strongest boons. He can easily toss cars and boulders around, leap through floors of a museum and through the ceiling, and as Fish pointed out, if he can get a hold of an opponent, they can be eaten in mere seconds. He's also much faster than the average human, being able to go speeds of 30 mph at least.
His weaknesses on the other hand are harder to parse. He retains the standard troll weakness of sunlight turning him to stone. Music based magic also seems to work on him via Douxie in the Wizards series. The claim that "only Eclipse can deal him a mortal wound" is especially odd given that Orlagk with Decimaar has caused him injury and even Excalibur. So it's potentially that only potent magically enhanced weaponry can hurt him, and the eclipse thing is more of a prophesy than a definitive.
===============
In a world of Gods and Titans, Mirage was born to struggling musician and cursed human father, and a tiefling mother with decent magic potential, Mirage grew up poor, but never unloved by her parents. They taught her how to play the violin, do simple magic spells, and survive in a world that looked unfavorably to those with her and her mother's infernal ancestry. Her parents also did their best to keep the family curse from affecting her life too much.
Should a member of the family approach a spirit of the dead, the spirit would latch onto them, and transfer all the feelings of sorrow and sadness onto the family member, that they experienced in their lifetime. Such a vast amount of negative emotion lead many of the family to suicide, and unfortunately for Mirage, her parents were no exception.
Now forced on her own at 15, Mirage eventually left her hometown to find a cure for the curse a few years later. Travelling with a Cleric of Hades looking for misguided souls, a royal guard turned mercenary, and a druid who set the world ablaze with her charm.
Mirage initially focused on support, but soon learned her skill in illusions and fire based magic. Using her father's violin, she played songs that confused foes, healed her allies, burned enemies in hellfire, create an illusory dragon that cannot be killed, but does damage like a real dragon. She even has spells to grow plants for harvest, turn invisible, teleport, and even change a creature or object into something else completely and permanently.
The burning grew even stronger when after set to do a favor for the sun God Helios, Mirage's fire magic was able to ignore a creatures natural resistance to fire. She could burn through magic armor, fire dragons, and even other flames itself.
Her adventuring days came to an end during a climactic battle with a cult of Typhon, the scourge of the Olympic gods. The cult brought Typhon back as a demigod and due to loopholes in the laws of the divine, the Gods couldn't fight him to stop his continued rampage. Not directly anyway. Mirage's group was gifted boons, and Mirage's was the Aegis Armor. Armor worn by a younger Athena, and able to defend against mental effects and blows that would kill the average human. Typhon was defeated, but Mirage was left alone as the sole survivor of her party. She retired from adventuring after that battle, but still travelled, and spread her songs across the land.
Mirage's strengths are... Many. She's a versatile spellcaster, her fire spells bypass immunity, Athena's armor make it very difficult to actually hit her, she can heal, evade, teleport and more.
Her weaknesses are that she's still mortal. If her opponent can overpower her defenses, she doesn't have much to stand up to attacks. She was never the muscle of any group she was in. Also important to note, that many of her good illusion spells take time to cast, only one can be active at a time, and while teleportation is nice, she's no faster than a normal human, and by the rules of death battle, no escape allowed.
Speaking of, the results of the fight. I don't have the time or budget to do an animation, so let's just say the result and how that was decided.
===============
Mirage wins.
Don't get me wrong, Gunmar is a potent fighter and physically powerful, but from the talks with Fish, his most powerful feat was throwing a car. As fast as it was going, the joules needed for that feat was ~450,000. There might be more, but let's look at Mirage's feat of tackling Typhon.
Typhon was once at least on par with Zeus, who can throw literal thunderstorms at people he doesn't like. The average strength of a thunderstorm according to google is 10^15 joules of energy, so this is the benchmark.
Typhon was turned into a demigod sort of being to free him from the bindings he was under after his initial rampage. Let's say an eighth of the benchmark, and divided again for the 4 members of her party. (The ones that actually fought Typhon that is.) Which gives us a total of 31,250,000,000,000 Joules of energy. That's roughly 31,250,000 sticks of dynamite.
Yeah... That's a bit more powerful. She would need to beat that to do damage to him, and despite not being the main attacker, she was still able to damage Typhon.
Gunmar's combat experience is also something to note. He's fought wizards before and would know how to face them, but Mirage's versatility and skill is something Gunmar has shown no perfect counter for. Even if he reaches Mirage, she has several skills that would allow her to avoid harm or even misdirect him. Hell, she could turn him into a mouse and teleport him into the deepest part of the ocean. He's a literal rock monster and would sink. Either drowning if he can, or just unable to move by the crushing weight of the ocean.
For that matter, she could just teleport them both to a location in sunlight. She knows a thing or two from her travels, and a troll's aversion to sunlight is well documented in most realities where trolls exist.
And finally, the Eclipse blade. As stated before, magic weapons like Excalibur can pierce his indestructible defenses. Hell, he's been winded by being tackled or having a large rock thrown at him. I'm 90% sure it's less of conditional immortality, and more a prophesy of what is needed to finally end him. And thanks to Helios, Mirage is a magic weapon effectively with her fire magic. Bypassing immunity, both natural and magical. Should it not be conditional immortality, Gunmar would be literal toast.
TL;DR, Against this Mirage, Gunmar's feats were just an illusion of grandeur.

Little HCs about Gunmar to help him to be a bit more humanized in this AU
He is really sensitive and gets his feelings hurt pretty easily, but he tries to hide it as well as he can.
He enjoys carving and mosaic art.
He loved sleeping under Kára's fluffy tail as a whelp (as well as a little bigger boi too).
This plushie was made because Gunmar was so attached to Kára that he would freak out when she was gone. It was made with her fur, so it had her scent. (He replicated this same technique in a plushie he made for Bular.)
Tumblr media Tumblr media
When Gunmar was younger, he had a habit of repetitively rubbing his hands when nervous. His claws left marks on his hands, which he later took engravings to decorate and hide them.
Tumblr media Tumblr media
Overall, when he took engravings, he specifically asked for chaotic and asymmetrical patterns because "it fits his style" and more importantly, to hide his natural scars. (+ His "tattoo artist" hates him for his order).
Gunmar is a "helicopter parent".
He got little bit of the "daddy physique" when Bular was small, since he prioritized him a lot.
The Decimaar Blade's grip and pommel were modified by Gunmar to give it more personality and comfort, as well as putting the time spent at working for a blacksmith as a teen to use.
Tumblr media Tumblr media
At first, he was scared to taste human meat. He didn't think that a disgusting creature could taste so good.
When he lost his eye, he bumped into things pretty often, until he learned to live without depth perception.
Gunmar enjoys the starry night sky, it reminds him of his father and his obsession with the starmap (that Gunmar got to hear over and over again as a whelp).
He chuffs when he's happy, like tigers.
Sometimes Gunmar loafs when he sleeps.
Anyway, what do you think? Here's all that comes to my mind at 6am...
But if you have any more, I would like to hear them. And if I like them, I can adopt them 😉 (if I may? If that's okay with you?)

I want to ask for your opinion on Morgana from Trollhunters/Tales of Arcadia. Do you think she's a well-written character, is she compelling and interesting? If yes, can you explain why? You've said that you like her portrayal in Wizards as a "morally complex ignored advisor", but personally I feel that all of Wizards was too rushed and there were a lot of inconsistencies with pre-established Trollhunters canon.
Personally, I don't buy that what she went through could've turned a well-intentioned person who wanted to protect magical creatures into a genocidal maniac bent on wiping out humans and threatening to wear people's spines as a crown.
She created the Decimaar-blade which is a weapon used for mind-control, enslaved Angor Rot and took his soul, kidnapped troll children to create changelings who she views and uses as pawns.
Those aren't actions that align with the goals, decisions and morals of the version of her we see in Wizards. Because of this, the redemption feels forced.
Yeah, Wizards was very rushed, and a lot of character arcs did not get the time they needed to breath. But as a fan of Morgan le Fay the folklore character, I'll take any incarnation where she has the complex morality of certain versions of her folklore characterization over the ones that just make her a boring femme fatale villain who's just evil for the sake of it.
There aren't enough versions of Morgan le Fay with depth for me to be picky about which ones I stand by.
