"how do I keep my art from being scraped for AI from now on?"

if you post images online, there's no 100% guaranteed way to prevent this, and you can probably assume that there's no need to remove/edit existing content. you might contest this as a matter of data privacy and workers' rights, but you might also be looking for smaller, more immediate actions to take.

...so I made this list! I can't vouch for the effectiveness of all of these, but I wanted to compile as many options as possible so you can decide what's best for you.

Discouraging data scraping and "opting out"

robots.txt - This is a file placed in a website's home directory to "ask" web crawlers not to access certain parts of a site. If you have your own website, you can edit this yourself, or you can check which crawlers a site disallows by adding /robots.txt at the end of the URL. This article has instructions for blocking some bots that scrape data for AI.

HTML metadata - DeviantArt (i know) has proposed the "noai" and "noimageai" meta tags for opting images out of machine learning datasets, while Mojeek proposed "noml". To use all three, you'd put the following in your webpages' headers:

Have I Been Trained? - A tool by Spawning to search for images in the LAION-5B and LAION-400M datasets and opt your images and web domain out of future model training. Spawning claims that Stability AI and Hugging Face have agreed to respect these opt-outs. Try searching for usernames!

Kudurru - A tool by Spawning (currently a Wordpress plugin) in closed beta that purportedly blocks/redirects AI scrapers from your website. I don't know much about how this one works.

ai.txt - Similar to robots.txt. A new type of permissions file for AI training proposed by Spawning.

ArtShield Watermarker - Web-based tool to add Stable Diffusion's "invisible watermark" to images, which may cause an image to be recognized as AI-generated and excluded from data scraping and/or model training. Source available on GitHub. Doesn't seem to have updated/posted on social media since last year.

Image processing... things

these are popular now, but there seems to be some confusion regarding the goal of these tools; these aren't meant to "kill" AI art, and they won't affect existing models. they won't magically guarantee full protection, so you probably shouldn't loudly announce that you're using them to try to bait AI users into responding

Glaze - UChicago's tool to add "adversarial noise" to art to disrupt style mimicry. Devs recommend glazing pictures last. Runs on Windows and Mac (Nvidia GPU required)

WebGlaze - Free browser-based Glaze service for those who can't run Glaze locally. Request an invite by following their instructions.

Mist - Another adversarial noise tool, by Psyker Group. Runs on Windows and Linux (Nvidia GPU required) or on web with a Google Colab Notebook.

Nightshade - UChicago's tool to distort AI's recognition of features and "poison" datasets, with the goal of making it inconvenient to use images scraped without consent. The guide recommends that you do not disclose whether your art is nightshaded. Nightshade chooses a tag that's relevant to your image. You should use this word in the image's caption/alt text when you post the image online. This means the alt text will accurately describe what's in the image-- there is no reason to ever write false/mismatched alt text!!! Runs on Windows and Mac (Nvidia GPU required)

Sanative AI - Web-based "anti-AI watermark"-- maybe comparable to Glaze and Mist. I can't find much about this one except that they won a "Responsible AI Challenge" hosted by Mozilla last year.

Just Add A Regular Watermark - It doesn't take a lot of processing power to add a watermark, so why not? Try adding complexities like warping, changes in color/opacity, and blurring to make it more annoying for an AI (or human) to remove. You could even try testing your watermark against an AI watermark remover. (the privacy policy claims that they don't keep or otherwise use your images, but use your own judgment)

given that energy consumption was the focus of some AI art criticism, I'm not sure if the benefits of these GPU-intensive tools outweigh the cost, and I'd like to know more about that. in any case, I thought that people writing alt text/image descriptions more often would've been a neat side effect of Nightshade being used, so I hope to see more of that in the future, at least!

I've been thinking of changing my username on my art accounts because "wolfgirlj" seemed a little... too obvious that my 13yo self made it.

I finally said screw it and decided to change it to 'wolvenjay.' If I find something better, then maybe I'll change it again.

Already watermarked posts will keep the old watermark, and I'll just be using a new one from now on. I kinda stopped wanting to make a bigger deal about something that is honestly pretty silly, so the change is now.

Now to actually draw...

Heya! Small Announcement.

Well, kinda.

I’ve been giving this a hard think for a while now, and I’ve decided to rebrand my art blog and other related socials (aka my Twitter) to ShlubbyArt after 11 or so years as SkyeRoxy.

This doesn’t change a whole lot aside from watermarking and some other technical stuff on my end. I just figured I would put this out there in the off chance that someone doesn’t notice the rebrand.

Why the change? 

Simply put, the ‘Roxy’ in SkyeRoxy was a nickname I had in high school, and I am now almost a decade out of high school and no one calls me that nickname anymore. Shlubby is a more recent nickname, and I think it suits me better. :)

Unsurprisingly, the username Shlubby is taken pretty much everywhere, so ShlubbyArt will have to do.

I think I wrote about it somewhere nefore, but it is a great idea (I think) to make a full post about it!

So let's start with Luna part. The name is really nostalgic for me. When I was a kid, my mom would always lovingly say I am like Luna from Harry Potter. So empathic, artistic and in her own world. Since then I saw her in different light and she became my favorite character. I started to sign my artworks as LUNA (and the name wasn't popular in my country then and isn't now, we don't have a name like this so it was even more special for me that way)

Then when I went to highshool, my then new best friend ordered me to make an OC so she could draw them and that's how Golden "Goldy" Rose came to life. At the beginning she looked so different than is she looking now, she was made so fast and without a thought and was drawn on paper. So then the best friend talked me into pursuing the arts of digital and then to make a DeviantArt account (she wanted soooo many things from me lol but without her I don't think I would be where I am now <33). Making a new account is, like most of you know, stressing and complicated. Especially if you are sooo new to almost every social media there is that you "need" a nickname. I wanted something unique, new! Luna wasn't it and I don't think I would be allowed to make it my DA nick as for sure there had to be someone that already was named that. So I went and took a name of my then new OC and added... Uh, Wolf lol. What was going through ny head? Probably something really special and I thought I was a genius. But that's how LUNA went away and I became GoldenRoseWolf

Like all kids, I made it my whole personality and started using it as my new alias. Still have art where my watermark was the old name. I remember my mom was surprised I stopped using Luna, maybe she was even sad, I don't know

But then I took part in a poem competition (and won first place!!!!) and we had to use a nickname. So I wondered and pondered and I decided on LUNA. It was a special thing, wanted to make something different and thought using my DA name or just Goldy would be meh. But then I remembered about LUNA and almost immediately pick it as my poetic alias

That made me think I don't really feel like the GoldenRoseWolf suits me very well. I never felt really connected to it, it was like something was missing... So GoldyLuna became a thing and it just clicked. I changed my Instagram name to goldy_luna and, again, made it my whole thing. I was goldyluna and goldyluna was me

I started to using it everythere. DeviantArts name stayed the same as I didn't want to buy a core so I can do it, welp wathever. Friends knew me so long under the name Goldy so it stayed as the short of my nickname, even if it is the name of my OC and my sona is Luna (that was made later than the goldyluna)(but I don't mind, I identified with Goldy so much at the beginning so the name became the part on me. Well duh, it is in my full nick). But I finally thought I found myself. So I didn't even think twice when I went on Tumblr and it asked me about my nick

Why Does Sage Not Watermark Their Art?

tldr; i dont care if my art gets stolen and theres no way in hell ai can learn off it

if my art gets stolen that just means someone decided my art was good enough or high enough quality to steal, which i take as a compliment!!

i'm not big or mainstream enough to get selected for feeding my art into ai generators (fuck ai art), if i was i would put ai disturbance on it

i think watermarks somewhat break the magic of the piece (no hate to people who watermark). i want my art and JUST the art to be seen, not a watermark

theres no reason to put the date onto the work because i can see the date in settings

im not even sure WHAT to watermark. usernames vary between platforms and change as well, and my REAL name changes sometimes too, the only permanent thing i can think of to sign is my deadname, and because "zoe" is such a common name i'd have to put my last name there as well and im sure af not giving you guys my full legal name 💀💀 the internet is scary

I've read all the rules before I post anything to any subreddit but I always get my first post deleted with something so stupid that I put in, thinking I was being precise and conclusive but I conclude too much & triggered every auto-bot with my precised words. I want to crawl up in a hedgehog ball.

Capibaby thought he was a kanga-baby, so he worked out super hard as his parents were BUFF.

Lately he developed a tiny tiny crush to Lady Sicilia Snake, the librarian.

Goodbye to The Beginnings of the Northern Sands

Ok, making a somewhat sentimental announcement, but not that important, so those who want to read can and those who don't, thank you for reading this beginning (ouo)/

I'm changing my username after... uhm... 8 years?

Wow, I've had that name “sandynorthstart” for a long time, huh?

But anyway, due to my previous publication, I decided to put watermarks on my drawings again, something that I should never have removed, apparently, and to avoid confusion with different names, I am going to change from “sandynorthstart” to “miss_conner3”, since the accounts where I publish the most of my art have this name... so there's the reason.

Except for Deviantart, it seems I have to pay to change my username, and at the moment I don't have the money for that XP

So this post is just my way of saying goodbye to the name "sandynorthstart" that has accompanied me since my beginnings on this account, and I think even since I was in school.

I really didn't want to change it, but I think it's for the best.

But hey, that's life.

okay so in middle school when me and my friends were in our “lol random” phase we had this joke where each of us was the “queen of something”, one girl was the lettuce queen, one was the armadillo queen, etc. and I was the squirrel queen (which was also an adhd joke cause like there’s the joke that people with adhd get distracted by squirrels). so thesquirrelqueen became my username for a few years. flash forward to me coming out as a guy along with a lot of people misreading my old watermark as “thesquirrelqueer” and I just decided to change it to that cause it fit me better than thesquirrelqueen.
