I know you've all been waiting eagerly for it, and here it is: the first Wikipedia poll of the new year! Links and summaries below the cut as always.
On 29 September 1940, a mid-air collision occurred over Brocklesby, New South Wales, Australia. The accident was unusual in that the aircraft involved, two Royal Australian Air Force (RAAF) Avro Ansons of No. 2 Service Flying Training School, remained locked together after colliding, and then landed safely.
On 11 May 1812, at about 5:15 pm, Spencer Perceval, the prime minister of the United Kingdom of Great Britain and Ireland, was shot dead in the lobby of the House of Commons by John Bellingham, a Liverpool merchant with a grievance against the government. Bellingham was detained; four days after the murder, he was tried, convicted and sentenced to death.
The Dorset Ooser (/ËoÊsÉr/) is a wooden head that featured in the 19th-century folk culture of Melbury Osmond, a village in the southwestern English county of Dorset. The head was hollow, thus perhaps serving as a mask, and included a humanoid face with horns, a beard, and a hinged jaw which allowed the mouth to open and close.
The Ediacaran (/ËiËdiËĂŠkÉrÉn/; formerly Vendian) biota is a taxonomic period classification that consists of all life forms that were present on Earth during the Ediacaran Period (c.â635â538.8 Mya). These were enigmatic tubular and frond-shaped, mostly sessile, organisms. Trace fossils of these organisms have been found worldwide, and represent the earliest known complex multicellular organisms.
John Rykener, also known as Eleanor, was a 14th-century sex worker arrested in December 1394 for performing a sex act with John Britby, a man who was a former chaplain of the St Margaret Pattens church, in London's Cheapside while wearing female attire. Although historians tentatively link Rykener, who was male, to a prisoner of the same name, the only known facts of the sex worker's life come from an interrogation made by the mayor of London.
Norwich Market (also known as Norwich Provision Market) is an outdoor market consisting of around 200 stalls in central Norwich, England. Founded in the latter part of the 11th century to supply Norman merchants and settlers moving to the area following the Norman conquest of England, it replaced an earlier market a short distance away. It has been in operation on the present site for over 900 years.
Olive Elaine Morris (26 June 1952 â 12 July 1979) was a Jamaican-born British-based community leader and activist in the feminist, black nationalist, and squatters' rights campaigns of the 1970s. At the age of 17, she claimed she was assaulted by Metropolitan Police officers following an incident involving a Nigerian diplomat in Brixton, South London. She joined the British Black Panthers, becoming a MarxistâLeninist communist and a radical feminist.
Paul Palaiologos Tagaris (Greek: Î Î±áżŠÎ»ÎżÏ Î Î±Î»Î±ÎčολÏÎłÎżÏ Î€ÎŹÎłÎ±ÏÎčÏ, c.â1320/1340 â after 1394) was a Byzantine Greek monk and impostor. A scion of the Tagaris family, Paul also claimed a somewhat dubious connection with the Palaiologos dynasty that ruled the Byzantine Empire at the time. He fled his marriage as a teenager and became a monk, but soon his fraudulent practices embroiled him in scandal.
The Royal baccarat scandal, also known as the Tranby Croft affair, was a British gambling scandal of the late 19th century involving the Prince of Walesâthe future King Edward VII. The scandal started during a house party in September 1890, when Sir William Gordon-Cumming, a lieutenant colonel in the Scots Guards, was accused of cheating at baccarat.
In a protracted conflict during the Spanish colonization of the Americas, Spanish colonisers gradually incorporated the territory that became the modern country of Guatemala into the colonial Viceroyalty of New Spain. Before the conquest, this territory contained a number of competing Mesoamerican kingdoms, the majority of which were Maya.

"When the Going Gets Tough, the Tough Get Going" is a 1985 song co-written and originally recorded by singer Billy Ocean. It was used as the theme song for the Kathleen Turner-Michael Douglas film The Jewel of the Nile. The single was a worldwide hit, reaching number one in the UK and peaking at number two on the US Billboard Hot 100 in December 1985.
The music video was shot at Brixton Academy in London and significantly boosted the popularity of the venue. It features Turner, Douglas and their co-star Danny DeVito as lip-synching backing vocalists. The video was initially banned on Top of the Pops in the UK because the actors were not part of the Musicians' Union, and DeVito's miming of the saxophone solo apparently violated union rules.

December Without Roses
AU: A Patient, and Time (Donna AU)
Note: "God gave us our memories so that we might have roses in December." ~J.M. Barrie
~~~
âI thought we'd try the planet Felspoon,â Donnaâ or rather, the Doctor-Donnaâ mused to the tiny woman on her shoulder.
âFelspoon?â Zepheera echoed, amused by the odd syllables. More than that, it was still strange to hear Donna speak this way. Since the Metacrisis, she could hear inflections that were very much like the Doctor. They truly had combined in her.
âYeah, Felspoon! Good name, isn't it?â Donna grinned as widely as Zepheera had ever seen as she slowly circled the console, manipulating the controls as she went. âApparently, they've got mountains that sway in the breeze. Mountains that move! Can you imagine?â
âOh, I can, easily! I mean, I live with you two, don't I?â Zepheera chuckled with a glance at the Doctor.Â
The mirth died on her lips when she saw him leaning gloomily against a pillar to the side. It dawned on her that he'd been perfectly silent since they'd returned to the TARDIS.
âDonna,â he said, just above a whisper. âShe doesn't understand. It's not fair.âÂ
Something went cold in Zepheera. His expression gave away nothing that he was thinking, and something about his voice, his eyesâŠnot cold, but⊠Zepheera couldn't put her finger on it.
Turning to look up at Donna, she also noticed that she hadn't met the Doctorâs gaze even when he called her name. âWhat's he talking about?â she asked Donna.
Donna shot her a glance and a smirk that Zepheera might not have thought was forced, if not for the sudden shift in the air. âOh, y'know. Now that I've got Spacemanâs brain, he's not the only one who can fly us to Felspoon and back! âCause anything he can do, I can! And you know, he's always running around the place in flight, but juuuust a tweak here and there could make flying this olâ girl a breeze-breeze-breeze-breezeââ
Zepheera bristled to hear Donna start to repeat herself, like a skipping record. It seemed out of her own control, and the borrower turned a frantic gaze toward the Doctor.Â
He looked the same as before, only a slight furrow in his brow and a shift in his weight taking him from leaning to standing. He wasn't surprised, he couldn't even bring himself to look concerned.Â
Donna was stillâ Zepheera didn't have a better word for it but glitchingâ so she whirled back and gave a good handful of her red hair a firm tug. âDonna!â
âI'm fine!â
With that insistence and another overly-cheery smile, Donna continued to fuss with the controls. Zepheera had to crouch and cling to the lock of hair still in her hand to keep upright. It occurred to her that Donna was putting more and more of the console between herself and the Doctor as he slowly stepped closer.Â
âNah, never mind Felspoon. Y'know who I'd like to meet? Cole Porter. Zepheera! We were just talking about Cole Porter the other day, weren't we? Whatâdya say? How's about meeting Cole Porter? Cole Porter, Jane Porter, Harry Potter- no, they're fiction- friction- fiction- fixing- mixing- rickston- Brixtonâ!â
A sharp gasp cut through Donnaâs mile-a-minute meltdown, and she convulsed until she was bent in half over the console, leaning on it for support. Zepheera, stunned by her friend being in clear distress, didn't see the movement coming. Her grip on Donnaâs hair had gone slack, leaving her with nothing to catch her fall when her boots slipped on the slick material of Donnaâs jacket.
Next thing Zepheera knew, she'd landed in a heap. Not on the cold, unforgiving console, but an outstretched palm. Looking up, she was surrounded by the curtain of Donna's red hair, her pained breaths kicking up Zepheera's own messy bob in the gusts. Fingers curled over her head, just enough to brace her through the movement of being pulled away from Donna. She found her gaze meeting the Doctor's when they unfurled.
Just like always, he'd rushed in to help when she needed it.
âTell me what's happening,â Zepheera demanded, her voice tight with concern.
A hint of emotion flashed in his eyes, a fraction of a second of pain. Then he gave a long blink, and it was gone.
âThere's never been a human-Time Lord Metacrisis before now,â he explained evenly. He cut his eyes to Donna, who'd just begun to recover from the last overload. âTell her why.â
Donna gave a sigh, then faced Zepheera and the Doctor by extension. She met his gaze briefly before letting it drop to Zepheera's. âBecause there can't be.â
Zepheera frowned, trying her best to put together what it all meant as she looked between her friends. âIâŠI don'tâŠâ
âThe part of me inside her is burning her alive,â the Doctor clarified, maintaining that level tone. Zepheera's eyes shot wide open, mouth agape as Donna pointedly averted her gaze once again. âIt's going to kill her if she stays as she is.â
âWell, you can stop it, right?â Zepheera asked desperately. Her eyes had already begun to well up at the thought of losing one of the closest friends she'd ever made in over a century and a half. âI mean there's- there's gotta be a way to fix it!â
Once again, Zepheera caught sight of a hint of sadness in those brown eyes before it was pushed down. After a deep breath, he simply said, âThere is.â
It should have been happy news. But it wasn't.
The Doctor's hand moved Zepheera away from that gaze and towards his shoulder. A numbness set in, her mind swirling and setting her body to automatically slide off of his palm and sit heavily next to his collar.
She knew what that look meant. Understood why it was so scary to see, after all the freaky things Zepheera had seen and experienced in their travels. The Doctor was hopeful to the point of stubbornness, always looking for a way out, a way to win, a way to save as many as he could. He never gave up on anything or anyone.
Seeing complete and total resignation in him tightened Zepheera's chest and made her breaths come quick and shallow. No amount of grounding exercises could bring her down from the overwhelming dread that whatever happened, they were about to lose Donna for good.
Something jostled the Doctorâs shoulder, and Zepheera became aware of the vice grip she had on the fabric of his collar. Her vision began to clear as she looked out from her perch and found the Doctorâs hands outstretched, holding Donna in place. She in turn clung to his forearms, and Zepheera's heart broke as her words finally made it through the fog in her head.
Donna was begging.
âPlease don't make me go back!â
âDonnaâŠâ the Doctor murmured. Zepheera felt the vibrations of his voice through her tingling fingers, and she yanked them back as though she'd been burned. âOh, Donna Noble, I am so sorry. But we had the best of times.â
Blinking through tears that had long since begun to flow, Zepheera finally brought herself to look up. Donna's expression was completely shattered, tears of her own falling as her head began to hang. She paused when her gaze fell on the borrower, and somehow she looked even more devastated.Â
âThe best,â the Doctor breathed.
That drew Donna's eyes back up to meet his, and Zepheera felt the loss of their gaze like a physical sensation. Like a warm blanket removed in the cold. âWaitâŠâ she uttered.
The Doctor whispered âGoodbye,â and his hands lifted from Donnaâs shoulders. She once again began begging as his fingertips settled on her temples.
âStop it!â The cry escaped Zepheera in a flurry of raw emotion. Logic and reason did her no good when no one would explain to her what was happening, so her most basic impulses won out. She found herself on her feet and throwing herself into the Doctorâs neck as though it would do anything to hinder him. The Doctorâs eyes remained closed, barely even a twitch.
With a final âNo!â from Donna, whatever the Doctor had done took its final effect. Zepheera watched all energy drop from the woman as she fell forward into the Doctorâs arms.Â
âDonna!!â Zepheera shrieked, but it was too late. And she was too little to do anything about it.
I have been getting requests for earlier photos, so I've decided that I'm going to do a different Papa/Cardinal each week with some weeks dedicated to the past & current Ghouls/Ghoulettes of course.
Starting with our wonderful, if slightly grumpy, Papa Emeritus himself.
Brixton Academy, December 4th 2011.
Daniel Gray
I only got to see Papa I live once (not at this show) and it was also the first time I ever heard Ghost, but I would love to know how many of you got to see him and where?
Tour Diary 2: Russell
Japan to Scandinavia Jan-Feb 1996
By definition, touring involves a lot of travel, and this, coupled with the fact that often you're playing several concerts back-to-back, can all add up to making you rather exhausted. It's not so much the long hours of being on tour, as the intensive bursts of being on stage. It's more a question of adrenaline than physical energy. But you see, for me, playing concerts is just about the only thing about being in a band I really love. The recording, promotion and all the rest of the stuff is just the foreplay, itâs the concert that's the climax.
However, like all the great pursuits of mankind, what makes a good concert always remains elusive. It's got to be more than people simply enjoying music. There has to be some kind of connection, some unmeasurable factor, which marks it out as a special event.
The only real problem I have with any of the travel is with flying. It's an illogical but entirely natural fear. I can't help being aware that I'm in a lump of metal which really wants to plummet several thousand feet to the ground. What I do now is rely upon drugs, legally prescribed drugs, I hasten to add. But they don't do much and I'm still scared. They're supposed to make you go to sleep but all they do for me is make me slightly numb around the edges. Then when I get off the plane, I don't go to sleep either, because I'm full of this great sense of euphoria that I'm still alive.
VHSâReleased 28 October 1996 (Also on the Ultimate Live DVD 2005) Concert Recorded Live at Brixton Academy, 21 December 1995 The tour diary was filmed on Pulp's 1995-6 tour of Europe and Japan. Tour diaries are narrated by Robert Hulse, and NOT the band members themselves - which is a pity really.
So I was supposed to see Suede in a couple of months (in my own manor, basically- it would be lazy not to go) but Iâve been following this story in local and national press and it just seems to get worse and worse.
I mean, it would be weird enough going to a concert in there, knowing that people had died there only a few months earlier.
But to find out it was greed and corruption and it looks like an inside job that was responsible? Ffff those greedy arseholes - this makes me so angry.
I do wonder if the Suede gig is going to be rescheduled, moved to another venue or just cancelled (canât see them NOT playing London on this tour) but I donât want those corrupt bastards at the former Brixton Academy getting any of my money now.
Mistletoe 2022
Where: Brixton When: December 2022 Who: @franciscovidal
She felt it fitting to meet him in his space. Brixton meant a lot to Vidal, and Jessica was keenly aware of that. Perhaps she had subconsciously chosen the location to try to cater towards him- put him in a good mood before seeing her. Though the location she picked was truly because of what she was looking at now. The lights and decoration. Up and down the street was decorated in christmas lights off all different colors. Several stores displayed holiday scenes and even the church towards the end of the street had a nativity scene out front.
With a light snow falling around her, Jessica thought back to their brief text messages. His proposal to meet. Her agreement and location suggestion. His thumbs up of understanding. It had all been so staral and impersonal, or was that just how she interpreted it? There was a time when she considered Vidal her greatest protection. He had always had her back and supported her.Â
Then everything imploded.
Turning her head up, the light flakes of snow touched her cheeks as she stood leaning back against a light pole. Even bundled in her multiple layers and thick coat it would never be enough to make the Southern California girl to be comfortable in the snow. Though it was truly a magical sight to watch the lights glow in the soft snow.
âAs much as I prefer the summer, snow is a beautiful sight,â
