“Say it Loud:” James Brown Doc Hits Small Screen Feb. 19 and 20
- “He showed me what was possible,” Mick Jagger says
The Hardest Working Man in Show Business always knew he had off-stage work to do as well.
“I’m a black man,” James Brown says in the trailer for “Say it Loud,” which airs at 8 p.m. Eastern Feb. 19 and 20 on A&E.
“I gotta take part in my cause. I gotta take part in my fight for freedom, for equality. And take a stand where it’s needed.”
The four-hour, two-night documentary is based on previously unseen interviews and performances and features commentary from Questlove, Bootsy Collins, LL Cool J, Chuck D, Mick Jagger and others. Deborah Riley Draper directs.
“He showed me what was possible,” Jagger, who is one of the executive producers, says of Brown. “Not that I could do it, but I could dream of it.”
The title track - “Say it Loud” - was “the original Black Lives Matter,” Questlove says in the trailer. He and his Roots bandmate Black Thought also co-executive produced the film.
“The life of James Brown is significant not only to understand his immense musical impact, which inspires us and other artists to this day, but also for the deep and lasting impression he has had on American culture,” they said in a statement.
“Brown’s life is a crucial and timely story of struggle, redemption and self-identity and we are honored to have the chance to share it.”

The film was scripted and will be directed by Deborah Riley Draper, whose credits include Versailles ’73 and Olympic Pride, American Prejudice. “Coffee Will Make You Black” follows a smart, funny and naive African American teenage girl finding her voice as she navigates conflicting relationships with her mother, her best friends, and her crushes amid racism, sexism and color-ism in 1960s Chicago.
Said Spencer, whose last collaboration with Taylor brought her the Oscar for The Help: “There are so many unheard stories and voices in the African American community that speak to universal themes and the humanity in all of us. I wanted to use my platform to create more opportunities for directors and writers of color to tell these stories. This project has women of color in lead roles in front of and behind the camera.”
Said Union: “A smart, funny, poignant coming-of-age film with a young black female protagonist is important to see. And it is equally important to see the complicated relationship between a black mother and her daughter as they try to succeed and assimilate in a change-resistant America.”

Her Story: Five Remarkable Women You Should Know
Her Story: Five Remarkable Women You Should Know

Representation matters. When we tell herstory, we tell our story. For hundreds of years, Black women have contributed in vital ways to every aspect of American life — science, literature, math, sports, politics, justice, music, entertainment, and the list goes on and on — but too often, their narratives have escaped our notice. Their stories have not been told.
So in honor of Black History month,
