Happy First Anniversary! Where do I even begin..? @rmarieee94, you entered my life during a murky time filled with tribulation, a time where I felt alienated from society, and at times, detached from reality. With the pandemic in full-swing and in-between multiple, variant-driven surges, you found me focused, driven, and resilient— yet hollow inside. Despite that, you took a leap of faith and our paths crossed.. ..at our hospital’s blood bank. 🤓🩸🧪 Overtime, you diffused my stubbornness, and impatience, with kindness and humility. In one year’s time, you allowed me to grow individually and accomplish personal goals, while also growing together and learning more about each other’s strengths, passions, and limits— we became a team. Eventually, filling up that hollow center. One year later, here we are now— still in the race, still as a team. Our journey together has not always been easy, but it is worth pushing through each challenge by your side. I know I can be difficult, and I know I can be frustrating, but know that I am grateful for your patience and sincerity, always. I am still overcoming my demons and I couldn’t have gotten this far without your understanding. Thank you for your selflessness. 🙏🏼🥹 For a long time, in order to adapt to new stressors I went into this mental survival mode— fortifying my resolve, but also compartmentalizing my emotions from all sorts of traumatic experiences. For high stress environments and situations, it enabled me to be efficient— however, applying it to everything else, just made me seem cold-hearted, disconnected, and selfish. Acute/Critical Care Nursing Certification: check! ✅ First of all, thanks be to God. 🙏🏼 Through Him all things are possible, and I am both blessed and grateful to be in the Lord’s grace. I prayed that if I fully committed to the review, and put in the time & effort, that He could put me in the best position to accomplish this goal: He delivered, and answered my prayers. 🕊 Next, I know I’ve said it many times before, and I’ll keep saying it again and again— thank you to all of the nurses who came before us, and pioneered this science into what it has become today. Especially to my preceptors & adoptive mothers in ICU who took me under their wings; thank you for pushing me relentlessly, and to the furthest reach of my abilities. Thank you for all the patience that you had left, and like our PTO, I apologize for using all that you had saved. 😅 To my family and friends: Thank you for your support. You know who you are & what you mean to me. 💯 To my colleagues: Thank you all for putting up with me, LOL. Happy Nurse’s Week 💉 To our predecessors: Thank you for always believing in us, and for sharing valuable insight from your experiences. Your guidance has significantly impacted our nursing practice, and that wisdom will stay with us forever. To our newer nurses: Stay confident and hungry to learn as you take each lesson in stride. Remain true to yourself and hold on to your integrity. May your heart be gentle to yourself and to others, but establish firm boundaries. Never give up. To my peers: You fought through exhaustion, and triumphed over fear. You endured the physical pain, while still coping through the mental and emotional strain from last year. You are all warriors, and I could not imagine serving our communities with another group of kind, yet assertive individuals like yourselves. Dear Kobe, It’s been a full year since that fateful day, and after all that took place over the course of that year, only now can I truly process the weight of your absence. You transcended the game of basketball, and inspired a multi-generational set of individuals from both athletes on the court, to spectators and dreamers off the court. In your triumphs, we caught a glimpse of greatness as you spoiled us in the City of Angels, and showed us how to rejoice with grace. But it was in your failures that you taught us our greatest lessons— Through the growing pains of expanding your game and rebuilding a team, you showed us how to adapt to life’s challenges with or without warning. By struggling in games plagued with injuries, you taught us how to endure pain with poise, and persevere against insurmountable odds. And it was through your journey of heartaches and disappointments that you allowed us to appreciate the joys, small victories, and rewards in life that follow after overcoming those gut-wrenching moments. You are the ultimate competitor. Not only did you shatter records and eliminate your competition, but you shared with us what it takes to become a champion, not just in basketball, but in our daily lives. Enough is enough. . . . . . After yesterday’s display of poor leadership, the inability to provide for the common defense, and negligence of the general welfare, we as a Union cannot stand for this any longer. For too long have we been patient. For too long have we been understanding. And for what..? To be overwhelmed by staggering numbers of new Covid patients, matched only by its insurmountable death rate, and now; to have the capitol of our nation defaced and disrespected by domestic terrorism? Allow me to share some insight and spread awareness: We. Are. Losing. In the U.S. alone, 1 out of 5 people is infected with coronavirus. That’s 20%. Every 10 seconds, 1 of these Covid patients die. That’s 6 people dying every minute; that’s 360 people dying every hour; and that’s 8,640 people dead in 1 day. We have been battling this virus for one year now, and how is it possible that a world-superpower cannot separate our differences of beliefs, in order to come together for the greater good? We are being stretched thin to provide critical care for multiple patients whose organs are failing, for patients who all have one thing in common: who underestimated this virus by not wearing a mask over their nose AND mouth, and got infected from unsafely visiting their own family and friends. There are no more ICU beds left in the hospitals of Southern California. Zero. We do not have the infrastructure to expand AND safely provide the quality of care the general public expects towards a virus that has NO CURE. There is only a vaccine to decrease our chance of being infected with a 95% efficacy rate (that’s an A grade in your 4 unit class this semester, which some of you will settle for a C+), and yet 20-40% of our very own healthcare workers refuse this vaccine, and influence doubters to refuse it further. This is unacceptable. Our nation needs to be educated and be made aware. Vaccinate yourselves and your family when you receive the opportunity. We have been running on fumes for far too long and without end in sight. Dear 28, You are truly the ultimate educator. In the time of our lives where we arguably stand against the greatest hardships of our generation, you taught us the gravity of patience and kindness in the face of adversity and hostility. You embodied the spirit of forgiveness and peace, instead of the vengeful grips of animosity and hate. This year, you have shown us the value of communication and togetherness in our reality portrayed through division of state and neighbor. Instead of casting aside our differences and working together as a team, we saw a nation severed in half with the horrors and multiple disappointments that followed one another again and again. Additionally, you were also our disciplinarian that put us in timeout for a grueling 9-months and STILL counting. In that time, gave us the ability of self-reflection, self-discovery, and the gift of self-love. After achieving such awareness, enabled us to identify the negative energies around us, and allowed us the assertiveness to surround ourselves with the ones who truly love and support us. Thank you for all the lessons. I am eternally grateful. 29; I’m coming for you. Since the beginning of this year, my fellow healthcare warriors that continue fighting their battles each day have had little to defend themselves against this invisible enemy that has taken the lives of over 317,000 unique, and beautiful individuals nationwide. This vaccine is our weapon to finally fight back and build resistance. To my fellow Covid slayers, We are exhausted; from being worked to the bone. Our hands are dried, cut, and scarred from endless hand washing: We are numb and desensitized; from seeing death walk in and out of patient rooms, and hover back and forth in our hallways. But this is our chance! Now we take back everything that has been taken away from us.
