Happy Wincest Wednesday 💛 Do you think they'd ever get rings? Maybe as a joke at first or for a case but then - keeping them on. Or any other set-up for it!

The best version of this I've read is astolat's Road to Shambala, which I have already talked about on this post.
Tbh I find rings pretty implausible if they are rings qua rings -- that is, a commitment symbol that they each wear knowing exactly what that means, whether it's a joke or a case or whatever. I've obv read marriageesque fics where it happened -- hell, I included those leather bracelets in my recent fic as a gesture toward it -- but I still find it unnecessary, and part of why is that line Dean has in the fan musical episode: I don't need a symbol to remind me how I feel about my brother.
As a declaration of love that's pretty powerful. Now, it might still be nice to have a symbol, and we see that they do keep the faux samulet, and later in fact Sam's saved the real one too -- but it's not in the symbolism that their marriage lives, even if those symbols are cute or sweet or even a little bit devastating.
It's in the choosing to stay together every day. It's the morning wake-up and knowing how the other one likes their coffee and making it that way even if they think it's gross, and it's in the looking for a case to make the other one feel better or get out of his head, and it's in the drive home and sitting in the quiet together under the rattle of the car radio and knowing that even if maybe somewhere else, some other life, could be easier or better or calmer, it wouldn't be right, because it wouldn't be the life that they have with their brother. Stacked against all that, a ring is just. A thing.
--that said. Sam was wearing a ring in the finale montage, and bc canon is my bitch I can say that I don't think he actually married Dean Jr's mother, and that he got the ring specifically to stop people asking questions or flirting or whatever, and that when he went to whatever pawn shop to pick it up he just asked for a men's size 9.5 but then he paused, and really looked, and the one he picked was one he thought Dean might've liked. And he wore it after, and he ran his thumb against the inside curve when he was thinking, and it was something, at least. A symbol. They're more needed when someone's gone.
