JONATHAN GROFF IS A TONY WINNER!!
He even gave Spring Awakening a shoutout in his speech! 🥹
This is a snippet from his speech as he was thanking his family.

I would kill to have a pro-shot of Deaf West Spring Awakening. That's literally the only way the show could be properly preserved in a legal way.

What I find fascinating in DWSA is how all the actors make up the scenery. Aesthetically, it's very pleasing to look at. But I think it could symbolize how society turned a blind eye to all of the teen's troubles, or sometimes actively made them worse.
Before and during The Word of Your Body, the student body forms the tree that Wendla and Melchior sit by. when Melchior goes up to it, one of the "branches" holds his shoulder. And when he wants Wendla to join him, all of the students hold out their arms to beckon her. As we can see during The Bitch of Living, the majority of the students have some level of experience concerning the idea of sex. In the very beginning, we can see that that is something that Wendla lacks.
When Melchior invites her to sit by the tree, that moment is when things start to shift for her, as well as when her relationship with Melchior turning physical. The "tree" and Melchior both invite her to explore that part of human existence, with the tree potentially signifying her step towards teen and adulthood, with her joining all of them during their process of finding themselves.
Later on, when Wendla asks Melchior to beat her with the switch, all students are in a circle around them. And each time he hits her, the students slap the ground. Apart from them just providing sound effects, I think it could symbolize how society as a whole played a part in causing pain for Wendla, as well as how they assisted in Melchior hurting her.
After Don't Do Sadness/Blue Wind, when Moritz goes looking for Ilse, the students stand with their backs to the audience as Moritz moves around them. They stay motionless and don't react, even as he pulls the trigger, just like how nobody cared or paid attention to Moritz even as he killed himself.
Anyway, I might have completely missed the mark on this but it's just something that I noticed, and thought was cool.

will never ever respect or understand people who say hanschen and ernst are supposed to represent or be similar to melchior and wendla, especially because of this moment. if anything, they are totally different.
here, at the end of word of your body (reprise), when ernst signs “you’re gonna be my bruise” to hanschen, hanschen pushes his hand away during “bruise” and shakes his head, saying no. he’s not going to let that happen. he’s not going to hurt ernst, ernst isn’t going to hurt him, they aren’t going to hurt each other, and they are going to trust one another. this is a relationship that lies on love and trust and comfort, which is not like melchior and wendla at all.
during word of your body, instead, melchior and wendla were signing intertwined and together, representing that yes, this is their story. this is what’s going to happen. with hanschen and ernst, hanschen takes the initiative to say that wasn’t going to happen to them. love gay people!
