1930s Autumnal Velvet from Indiana University
I have long thought browns don't get any respect and this delightful printed velvet dress confirmed my belief that they deserve a lot. This is a soft silk and/or rayon velvet printed in brown, orange and tan which was then trimmed in brown velvet and gold metal for the tie and the belt. The pictures do not do it justice as it simply glows with color because of the nature of velvet which catches the light so beautifully. I would happily wear it come fall.
The collar and tie are one of the many clever necklines invented during the 1930s. This one has tunnels around the sides of the neck to hold the tie which is then tacked at the back and shaped into a bow in the front with the help of the metal piece. The bow is large and shaped and stiffened with some kind of interfacing inside. The waistline returned to its normal spot by the mid-1930s and hemlines dropped to lower calf, but skirts always had some kind of flare below the knee whether from a pleat, a godet or the cut of several gored panels. There was always a little flirty swing as a woman walked, and in velvet, the skirt would catch the light in a playful way. You can see how the bodice is shaped with a piece that comes up from the waistline in a soft curve and then gathers above to shape the bustline. It has long sleeves gathered at the cuffs, and a long shaped skirt.
Being in velvet, which is a delicate fabric despite its thickness, this is a dressy daytime outfit, something for a luncheon or a tea or an afternoon concert. The colors make me think of fall, and back to school events. Which makes this a good time to share it, I thought.
I had the pleasure of seeing highlights of the Elizabeth Sage Historic Costume Collection, Indiana University at Bloomington in the company of the Curator/Director Kelly Richardson. This collection is part of the Sidney and Lois Eskenazi School of Art, Architecture + Design about which you can find more here: https://eskenazi.indiana.edu/index.html

Inès - an 1890s daydress
Tumblr media
Here's a not-so-little recolor of this dress by Kizaragy. I'm not sure if they have a tumblr, which is unfortunate because all I want to do is tell them how absolutely BREATHTAKING their dress is, and how well it works for the 1890s. Oh well. I'm telling the world instead, I suppose.
I'd say this style of dress was most fashionable between around 1892 and 1894, but you could probably use it for the whole 1890s, maybe even up to the early 1900s. It really depends on how closely your Sims follow fashion trends, I suppose.
There are swatches in more extravagant, "expensive" colors, as well as simpler, less bright ones. This means it's a very versatile dress in terms of class as well. Anyone from a farmer's wife to a noblewoman could wear it.
I also noticed that the mesh and texture are quite nicely divided into a top and bottom half, so I made some swatch overlays for the skirt as well. There's a separate link to that underneath the download links for the dress itself.

Known issues: The original has a thing where it makes certain hats invisible, similarly to how a long-sleeved shirt makes bracelets invisible, except it's much more annoying, because what's an 1890s dress without hats? I can't fix this in a recolor since the mesh isn't included, but I've provided a short tutorial on how to fix this in the original. You're gonna need Sims 4 Studio (Star) installed.

"Shielded by my own obscurity, and by the lapse of years, and a few fictitious names, I do not fear to venture; and will candidly lay before the public what I would not disclose to the most intimate friend." (Agnes Grey, A Novel – Anne Brontë, 1847)
anne brontë likers we need to unionize.
ah, the 1840s! the brontë sisters, edgar allen poe, charles dickens... and what i can only imagine is an incredibly confusing amount of petticoats. the torso becomes thinner and longer, with the characteristic "point" ending of the bodice. skirts continue to grow, and grow, and grow... you get the point. sleeves fluctuate through this era, but are more often than not kept close to the arms – a major difference from the 1830s. the stereotypical victorian conservatism can be seen in daydresses of this era. speaking of daydresses, it became easier for women of the (gasp) lower class to mimic the styles of upper class women, as fashion moved from trims to the fabric and cuts themselves. its much easier for your average woman to obtain fabric than to obtain jewels, for example. going forward, expect a mix of upper and lower (more accurately, the slowly forming middle) class fashions!
also, i have been flying through these. i have no idea how long this amount of energy and hyperfocus is going to last. also also, to every cc creator that is getting tagged over and over: i'm sorry. it is a cc desert out here and you are oases. also also also: i reused a dress once. i could have sworn i downloaded ten but apparently i only downloaded nine ??

1896, Part 2
They are very much looking forward to when Olivia grows out of her destructive phase.
Tumblr media
Lydia enjoys the before and after church socials.
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
Laurence and Lydia aren't getting any younger. They're starting to turn grey, and they have wrinkles that seem to have appeared overnight. Lydia is very glad for the help Leigh gives, especially on the days when the rain makes her bones ache.
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
Pecan grew into a fine strong horse who will be a lot of help on the farm.
Tumblr media
Virginia became a teen who loved animals and wanted to be a musical prodigy.
Tumblr media
The twins always rush to meet their daddy when he gets home from work.
Tumblr media
They now need a new maid. Poor Leigh.
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
Lydia hired Ada Denny, and they hope she'll be a bit less silly than Leigh was.
Tumblr media
That dollhouse has probably been broken more times that every other dollhouse I've placed combined.
As Leigh is a housemaid, not a housekeeper or Lady's Maid, I have Lydia call her by her first name.
The pose for the portrait is Victorian Family Portrait: I by @stayathomesim https://stayathomesim.tumblr.com/post/630149384230830080/victorian-family-portrait-i (I hate posing so much--and also making cc portraits, but EA broke painting and portrait filters for DX11)

I came out of CAS and FIRE!
I love Ada's hair, but it is NOT hat compatible unless the hat removes the hair completely.
I'm out of room for pictures again.
Virginia's milestones and cc under the cut.
I am aware there should be more hats. Lydia's hats disappeared at some point, and I think one of her dresses is hiding them on at least some outfits. Virginia is still a child, and I think I'll give her hats as she gets older, since most of my hats that look okay for someone who just aged up to teen look silly with her hair, and I like her hair.
Virginia maxed all her childhood skills. She did not complete her aspiration.
Her milestones:
Firsts
Learned to Climb a Tree
Lost First Tooth
First Day of School
Life
Celebrated a Birthday
Maxed Motor Skill
Childhood Phase
Maxed Mental Skill
Maxed Creativity Skill
Social
Maxed Social Skill

There's still time for BP to send a memo to foreign royals that now it's white tie. I still can't accept that they will be in daydress. Imagine all the coronation portraits in super HD, it would be so glorious.
I sure hope so! Or that the leaked info is a decoy and they received ones with white tie on it anyway. I will be sad about ngl because just that sea of bling would have made me happy for the next decade.

I do think she was invited. The palace would not give them the opportunity to cry racism about it. IMO there's no communication between Harry and his father or brother. Everything now is through emails so they have written proof of everything said, and they say the bare minimum.
They were sent the save the date via email (the invitations only went out a few days ago), they answered with their list of demands and it was just crickets from the palace. There was no negotiation, the palace sent an invitation they would just RSVP or not, they didn't entertain any of their demands. As always their PR is in full talking about the negotiations and their demands because they want to look like they have some leverage, like the palace is trying to convince them to go, but they would not budge. When in reality they were just ignored.
Then we have the leak about them not being in the coronation procession and the confirmation that only working royals will be in the balcony. So there's not much more they can pretend to be negotiating about. She isn't going because all she will get is being booed, she knows she will get no tiara because the dress code in their invitation is daydress, after the jubilee and the funeral she knows they will get no prominent seats, and maybe she will even get behind a candle.
Oh I for sure think she was invited. I think she was encouraged not to attend though.
I also think all the leaks about their demands for Lili & Archie to be part of the coronation, B-Day shout-out to Archie at a reception, balcony appearance, prominent places, etc...those all didn't go over well.
Harry and Meghan still don't understand that they are in no position to demand anything.

[Untitled]
Below is a transcription of a dream I had back in 2017. While I have had similar dreams to this one that had reoccurred multiple times over the years, this one really stood out to me due to the vivid, almost perfect recounting I had of it right after waking up.
I was born and raised in a city in the forest. Skyscrapers constructed from massive dark logs shot high into the sky, their jagged tops nearly vanishing into the umbral haze above, and studded with countless shimmering windows each emitting a soft teal light. At their base were narrow and empty streets paved with hardened obsidian, illuminated softly by the rays of blue light filtering down from above. I remember staring at those windows and being mesmerized by their steady rhythmic twinkling. They reminded me of stories I’ve read about lights even higher in the sky, stars as they were called. We can never see these stars; they are always hidden to us. Blotted out by a thick and unreachable canopy - a dark blanket of twisted limbs and misshapen leaves born from the earth by some distant forgotten tree of unimaginable size somewhere. Out there. In the darkness. Letting nothing through but a cold and nearly endless drizzle.
I do not know how these terrible towers of blackened wood were made. Nobody does. They were there long before even my grandparents were born, and their grandparents before them. Were they harvested from the trees that used to populate this barren land, perhaps? Or were the logs imported from a far off place? I occasionally entertained a journey out beyond the city limits to find this lost world but nobody ever strays too far from the city. A few have attempted to leave but they always return quickly; every one of them all saying the same thing: There is no light out there. There is nothing at all. Nothing grows, and nothing lives. I stood near the edge of the city many times staring off into the veil beyond. Straining my eyes to see just a hint of what, if anything, may rest beyond the dim blue light of our city. I always turned away disappointed.
This night had been a fitful one. Plagued by a bout of anxiety and its resulting insomnia my mind was soon eased by the soft sound of gentle rain pattering against my windowsill, and I quickly drifted off into nothingness. Gentle vibrations. Metallic singing. Deep rumbles. Loud bangs. I jolted awake, the sudden sound echoing through my bedroom. I looked around quickly, startled and breathing heavily as I rapidly blinked the blurry haze of sleep from my eyes. My friend, a girl about my age with long black hair, cheery bright-blue eyes, and wearing a yellow daydress stood at my bedroom doorway with her father, an old, scowling man wearing a plaster-covered apron and permanent five-o-clock shadow. My friend said nothing and just stared at me, her quivering lip completing the look of terror upon her face. I stared back, transfixed, rooted in confusion and panic, broken only when her father lifted his arm and pointed out my bedroom window.
The city was in flames.
Sleep overtook me not long ago and already so much of the city had been lost to the conflagration. Rising quickly and paying no mind to my state of dress I worked to jam as many clothes and sundries as I could into my old highschool backpack before the three of us departed, descending several flights of stairs, and stepping through the two cyan glass doors into the steady rain. My uncle was already waiting out front there by his vehicle. A massive, fat man with a pink coat, floppy pink hat and blue and white checkered scarf. His normally jovial expression was instead one of great concern. Of all the things that had occurred thus far his expression was the most worrisome. We all piled into his vehicle and he drove off to some unknown destination.
Nobody talked. Nobody dared to. We all just looked out our windows at the orange-red flames. Everything was burning. Every building that I could see was crumbling and half destroyed. Look back I saw a red glow creep up the deadwood exterior of my now-former home, the sparkling orange embers angrily opposing the soft lights somehow yet visible through the tinted windows. The flames didn’t care about the steady nighttime rain, they just spread and spread, faster than I thought they could. However it wasn’t the flames that I was most afraid of.
The rains strengthened at the same time every day like clockwork, falling mysteriously from the canopy above. It was thought that it would keep the towers fireproof and irrigate our crops, and while that was half true it also brought something else with it. Scoundrels. Darkfolk. A breed of human clad in scavenged rags that lived in the void beyond the city limits. They waited for the rain to obscure their approach into the city where they would then scavenge for food and supplies. Nobody dared to be out during the storms. Most that I knew had a friend or family member taken by one of these beasts, and those who have not were still well acquainted with the gruesome remains found in darkened alleys of the city the following morning. To leave our homes was more foolish than staying inside. Even now in the face of total destruction the streets remained mostly empty with most of the residents electing to stay indoors and face a hot death surrounded by their family and possessions. The few who look the chance to leave were running to and fro, across streets and into hovels, cars, each other’s arms.
My uncle drove for what felt like hours. The calming blue of the city had become a sinister scarlet as the growing flames further devoured the hollow exteriors of the ancient wooden towers. Yet as brilliant as the flames were they did nothing to breach the darkness surrounding us. Even the dark canopy above remained silent. Nothing got through it. Ever. We did not know where to go, and the creatures would soon be upon us…unless. I had an idea. A home! On the other side of the city secluded within the industrial districts! I had met the owner once before, Mr. [][][][]. He rescued me from the storms one night just last year and purchased for me my now-ashen home.
I gave my uncle his address, and there we went.
His home was nearly completely surrounded by the flames, but the bright lights inside still projected a bright azure through the thick quartz windows. My uncle pulled up to the moderate, twenty-five floor structure, now far taller than most of the surrounding city, and parked out in front of the lobby doors. We braved the downpour for but a few seconds to invade the mezzanine. It was cool in there, a product of the old machinery and gadgetry Mr. [][][][] found in the underhalls deep beneath his home. We relished in it. Not because we escaped the heat - we never actually felt any of it – But because the man, Mr. [][][][], had an unusual home filled with wonder: This tower was the only one to have been constructed of solid steel and thus the only one untouched by the flames. He had connections. Strange, unexplainable connections to things I dared not ask. He had always been an enigma. Nobody talked to him, and nobody spoke about him. But I knew he could be trusted.
I pushed the button to summon the lift. 22nd floor. The whole floor was his. We boarded and went upwards.
Ding!
Beyond the elevator doors was a sight alien to us: the darkwood that we had been so accustomed to had been replaced by a midnight blue lattice of iron and steel plates. Every wall, the floor, and even the ceiling were formed from dark blue iron and steel riveted to hidden support beams that extended far, far downwards, anchoring this massive tower securely to the underhalls. I stumbled my way towards a window to partake in the death throes of the city. By now the city was illuminating the room and not the other way around. Everywhere, for miles and miles around, the flames licked the sky, appearing to almost reach the canopy. I felt myself get dizzy from holding my breath. It somehow looked so peaceful, so serene. I had not once thought about what would come after this and where we would go.
I turned from the window and joined everyone else who had gathered just outside the elevator, softly whispering quietly among themselves. We left the entryway and entered Mr. [][][][]’s living quarters. It was wide open. Brightwood tables, dark-blue steel lamps, woven chairs, and comfortable beds. While to us it was a lot of furniture, Mr. [][][][] ‘s living area was still sparsely decorated, and had far too much open space left to occupy. I slowly stumbled across the room to a soft ottoman, upon which I sat pensively eyeing a large television hanging from one of the walls. The off-air card was frozen on the display, and the soft jazz that accompanied it had long since ended. Nobody was at the station to flip the tape. The station probably no longer existed. Just like Mr. [][][][]. He was nowhere to be found.
Where was he?
