Release: August 24, 1987
Lyrics:
Give me time to care
The moment's here for us to share
Still my heart is not always there
What more can I say to you?
Could I lie to you?
I'm just too weak to face the truth
Now I know, I should make a move
What more can I say?
How can I fall? How can I fall?
When you just won't give me reasons
When you just won't give me reasons at all
When all faith is gone
I fight myself to carry on
Yet I know of the harm I do
What more can I say to you?
Now I hold this line
I know the choice to leave is mine
I can't help what I feel inside
What more can I say?
How can I fall? How can I fall? (How can I fall?)
When you just won't give me reasons
When you just won't give me reasons at all
I'll follow through, I'll say I do
When the time is far more right for you
I'll make that move and when I do
Will I doubt again the way I do?
How can I fall? How can I fall? (How can I fall?)
When you just won't give me reasons
When you just won't give me reasons at all
How can I fall? How can I fall? (How can I fall?)
When you just won't give me reasons
When you just won't give me reasons
How can I fall? How can I fall? (How can I fall?)
When you just won't give me reasons
When you just won't give me reasons
Just won't give me reasons
Just won't give me reasons at all
How can I fall? I fall, I fall
How can I fall for you?
Songwriter:
How can I fall? How can I fall? (How can I fall?)
When you just won't give me reasons
When you just won't give me reasons

14 Wildly Different Nirvana ‘Smells Like Teen Spirit’ Covers
Dave LiftonPublished: September 10, 2016
Nirvana's "Smells Like Teen Spirit" was a cultural turning point, but at its heart in a song rooted in traditional pop structure. As such, it's open to a variety of interpretations. To prove our point, we've embedded numerous cover versions below.
You'll hear renditions performed by some of their friends and contemporaries in alternative rock, and while some of them are somewhat faithful to the original there will also be arrangements that surprise you. We've found a capella, industrial, jazz (big band, trio and modern), analog keyboards, novelty, classical crossover, a Japanese beat-boxer and a punk legend giving a take that borders on bluegrass.
We guarantee you won't like every one, but they all show the sturdiness of the song, and illustrate just how far you can take four simple chords. Take a listen...
Tori AmosFrom: 'Crucify' (1992)Possibly the first non-parody cover (see below) of "Smells Like Teen Spirit" to get mainstream attention came from Tori Amos. She included it on an EP for her single "Crucify," which also included takes on the Rolling Stones' "Angie" and Led Zeppelin's "Thank You."
Paul AnkaFrom: 'Rock Swings' (2005)Just as Pat Boone released an ironic collection of big band takes on heavy metal songs, In a Metal Mood: No More Mr. Nice Guy, another relic of the post-Elvis Presley, pre-Beatles era, Paul Anka, did the same. Rock Swings saw Anka put swing arrangements on tracks as diverse as Van Halen's "Jump," Soundgarden's "Black Hole Sun" and Michael Jackson's "The Way You Make Me Feel," in addition to "Smells Like Teen Spirit."
The Bad PlusFrom: 'These Are the Vistas' (2003)Known for mixing in covers of rock songs with their own compositions, Minneapolis jazz trio the Bad Plus put their take on "Smells Like Teen Spirit" on their major label debut, 2003's These Are the Vistas.
Michael BubleFrom: Live (2007)How classic a pop song was "Smells Like Teen Spirit?" While performing in the band's hometown of Seattle in 2007, crooner Michael Buble used the chorus as the intro to "Fever," the Little Willie John song that Peggy Lee turned into a standard. You can take issue with Buble's interpretation, but you can't deny that it doesn't seamlessly fit.
DokakaFrom: Free Download (2009)A Japanese beat-boxer, Dokaka layered his voice many times to mimic instruments on this non-lyrical take. You can download it at the Free Music Archive.
The Flying PicketsFrom: 'The Original Flying Pickets: Volume 1' (1994)The Flying Pickets, a British a capella group that has been around since 1982, recorded Nirvana's classic in 1994, along with songs as diverse as "Under the Bridge" by the Red Hot Chili Peppers, "When Doves Cry" by Prince and "Wonderful World" by Sam Cooke.
David GarrettFrom: 'Rock Symphonies' (2010)German classical crossover violinist David Garrett recorded "Teen Spirit" and many other rock songs on 2010's Rock Symphonies. The live version found below comes from a performance in Berlin that aired on PBS.
Robert Glasper ExperimentFrom: 'Black Radio' (2012)Pianist Robert Glasper mixed jazz, R&B and hip-hop to critical acclaim on his 2012 Grammy-winning Black Radio. The album closed with a seven-minute version of "Smells Like Teen Spirit" with samples, electronic beats and digitally treated vocals.
The MelvinsFrom: 'The Crybaby' (2000)The Melvins were good friends with Nirvana -- drummer Dale Crover was briefly a member -- and they paid tribute to them in 2000 by recording a take on "Teen Spirit" that was faithful to the original. But there was a catch: the vocals were done by Leif Garrett, an acting/singing teen idol from the mid-'70s whose career more or less ended after a drunk-driving accident in 1979 that left his friend, Roland Winkler, paralyzed.
The Moog CookbookFrom: 'The Moog Cookbook' (1996)Roger Joseph Manning, Jr., the keyboardist for the great power pop band Jellyfish, and Brian Kehew formed the Moog Cookbook in 1996 to perform covers on vintage analog synthesizers.
The MuppetsFrom: 'The Muppets Original Soundtrack' (2011)The Muppets rebooted their franchise with a 2011 movie. One of the scenes saw Sam the Eagle, Rowlf the Dog, Link Hogthrob, and Beaker torturing Jack Black with a barbershop quartet arrangement of Nirvana's hit as they shaved him. Courtney Lovewas reportedly not amused.
Patti SmithFrom: 'Twelve' (2007)Punk icon Patti Smith gave an acoustic rendition of "Teen Spirit," complete with banjo, on 2007's covers-filled Twelve. Midway through the song, Smith added a verse of her own poetry.
XorcistFrom: 'Bitches' (1993)Industrial act Xorcist didn't waste much time in getting a cover of "Smells Like Teen Spirit" out. It was released on an EP in 1993.
"Weird Al" YankovicFrom: 'Off the Deep End' (1992)Kurt Cobain said he knew he had made it when "Weird Al" Yankovic wanted to parody one of his songs. "Smells Like Nirvana" made fun of Cobain's occasionally indecipherable singing style. "Now I'm mumblin' and I'm screamin' / And I don't know what I'm singin' / Crank the volume, ears are bleedin' / I still don't know what I'm singin'," Yankovic sang in the first chorus.

Top 100 Songs of 2018
Happy New Year!
Another year and yes, another 100 songs. However, it does not appear to be a distinguishable year by any means. Or does it mean, that I’m just older and less impressionable. There are cool new features, including Chloe X Halle, Amber Mark, and Ravyn Lenae.
However, the year appears to be a hold over from last year. More Khalid, H.E.R., Daniel Caesar, Gallant, and Tom Misch.
Childish Gambino is a star. Janelle Monae seems to cross over a little more/
Pop appears to have languished for me, there is some Demi, some Mark Foster, and Troye Sivan.
I get more play from NAO and Alina Baraz
But 2018 just didn’t seem to land big with me, musically.
Or maybe, I’m just down with all the throwback, Maxwell, Tamia, and Toni.
Here is to 2019. I guess.

#finishedbooks Dilla Time by Dan Charnals. With no space left in my suitcase...I just had to get this. You figure with books on musical artists you got three angles: musicological, cultural, or biographical to approach the artist...and what immediately hits you is how complete this is in doing all three...and more from the introduction of syncopation by enslaved peoples, the history of electronic music, the abandoned triangular urban planning of Detroit, to Dilla's family's migration north, Detroit's musical history, and finally Dilla himself this is just the first fifth of the book. Going back to "Playing Changes" a book I reviewed on contemporary jazz, I mentioned in the review I was suprised to see a whole section on the Soulaquarians who I love I just never listened to them like I would a Thelonious Monk...and this book now has me listening to Dilla like a Monk and hearing music since him differently. That's a bold claim, and going into this book I was seeing the music notion of "Dilla time" in relation to standard and swing time and initially to an extent I just thought they were going to highlight what jazz musicians have long done in "back phrasing." I talked about this in my review of the "Black Music" book when comparing Hawkins, Young, and Parker mentioning Young's innovation was playing behind the beat...I always joked calling it playing in black time because it is like I am going to get there, it is just not on YOUR time (standard western musical time) but on mine time and it is still on time haha. You can always hear this in Dilla's music his snares are always rushed while at times his kick's are jumping around everywhere yet always sounded perfect. I had just attributed it to RZA who also never quantized beats but I realized for RZA it was genuinely random, for Dilla it was cultivated. And the thing with back phrasing, it was always a solo instrument or vocals like Billie Holiday to some extent...Dilla back phrased the WHOLE rhythm section and THAT changed music. I mean you can hear it of course in any underground hip hop music since but also Neptunes in the stuff they were doing for N' Sync and David Bowie's Black Star album, but jazz really embraced it and it was all over that Norah Jones break out album, but from there Roy Hargrve, Glasper, and McCraven to Kamasai, Jason Moran, Christian Mcbride, and even the current ECM golden child Vijay Iyer wrote his doctoral thesis on it, instead coining it micro time but is Dilla Time, so in effect he defined the pulse of jazz this side of the millennium. So going back to my inital statement in my review, about listening to Dilla like Monk...Monk's music is exciting because he never lands where you would expect from his percussive spliced finger way of playing the piano that creates this beautiful conflict due to his underlying logic...Dilla is the same. But straight and swing time came from Dilla juxtaposing the two feels even and uneven simultaneously creating a new disorienting rhythmic friction. From my autodidact music education when I made beats 20 years ago (with no public school music programs) I worked expecting to hear a beat counted in fours, I'd quantize the hi-hat that really acts as a metronome because it hits two times for every four beats setting the rhythmic current at eight...and I'd play out the kick and snare over 8 bars and loop...Dilla cuz his snare is rushed it messes up the whole structure so instead of 8 slices per a measure in something like "Go Ladies" you got 192 and he shifted that snare by five of those slices or precisely 128th note triplets...and all our ear hears is oddness because it is ahead. What Questlove had to learn playing on D'Angelo's "Voodoo" (which really is what everyone references as the start of Dilla Time on an instrumentized stage) was that to mimic it, he had to do something crazy like naturally saying to yourself, "ok im finna keep my right leg in straight time, swing my right arm at 66 percent, and with my left rush the snare by 1/7 of a quarter note."
