Government's Targeted Approach to Waitlists is Working
Tumblr media
Dr. Ayesha Verrall's Priority for Waitlist Reduction
In a recent data release, Health Minister Dr Ayesha Verrall highlighted the Government's successful efforts in reducing waitlist times for essential medical treatment, making a tangible difference to the lives of New Zealanders in need. Dr Verrall expressed her unwavering commitment to prioritizing the reduction of waitlists since taking office as Minister of Health.
Positive Results Emerge in Orthopaedic Care
Dr Verrall pointed out that the concerted efforts of various agencies are now bearing fruit, particularly in the field of orthopaedics. The total number of planned care treatments, including minor operations, has seen a significant increase nationwide, showcasing the effectiveness of the targeted approach.   Te Tai Tokerau - Northland Sets an Encouraging Example Despite facing winter pressures, several regions across New Zealand are steadily progressing towards meeting their waitlist targets. Notably, Te Tai Tokerau - Northland stands as a shining example of progress, with an impressive 76 per cent reduction in the number of people waiting more than a year for surgical treatment between August 2022 and July 2023.
A Path to Swift Action - Treatment Plans for Long Waitlist Patients
Addressing the plight of patients who have endured long wait times, Dr Verrall shared encouraging news. Individuals who had been waiting for over three years for treatment have either received their treatment date and plan or have already undergone treatment. The Health Minister's goal is to ensure that patients waiting for over two years will be treated or scheduled for treatment by the end of September.
A Focus on Orthopaedic Patients
Dr Verrall also shed light on the dedicated efforts being made for orthopaedic patients. A collaborative initiative led by Te Whatu Ora, in partnership with the New Zealand Orthopaedic Association and Physiotherapy New Zealand, aims to treat or schedule treatment for all patients waiting longer than 365 days for orthopaedic surgery by June 30, 2024.   Improvements in Theatre Utilization - A Game Changer One of the key factors contributing to reduced waitlist times is the concerted effort to improve theatre utilization across the country. The Anaesthetic Technician Tactical group has played a significant role in addressing workforce shortages, leading to fewer theatre cancellations. Their initiatives to enhance the recruitment and retention of anaesthetic technicians have been instrumental in improving patient care.
Health Reforms and Frontline Support
Dr Verrall emphasized the positive impact of health reforms, which have increased support for frontline healthcare while reducing administrative redundancies. As a result of a more unified health system, patients can now easily access planned care treatment in different areas of the country. For instance, South Canterbury has seen 302 patients from Canterbury and Southland receive treatment at Timaru Hospital in the past year, showcasing the improved patient mobility facilitated by these reforms.
Gratitude to Healthcare Teams
Dr Verrall expressed her heartfelt appreciation to the dedicated healthcare teams whose unwavering commitment and exceptional care have made these initiatives possible. Their efforts have brought about transformative changes, ensuring New Zealanders receive the medical attention they deserve. In summary, Health Minister Dr Ayesha Verrall's targeted approach to reducing waitlists has yielded promising results, particularly in the field of orthopaedics. Patients are benefiting from improved access to treatment, with wait times significantly reduced across the country. The collaborative efforts of healthcare professionals and various agencies have been pivotal in bringing about these positive changes, marking a significant milestone in New Zealand's healthcare system.   Sources: THX News & The New Zealand Government. Piha House in the Auckland Region

Architects: Milieu
Location: Waitakere Ranges, North Island, New Zealand

Piha House, Auckland
Nestled into the rainforest of the Waitakere Ranges, west of Auckland, Piha House is a compact two bedroom home was built on a tricky site with a modest budget, but maximises the stunning views and connection with nature.
What was the brief? The brief was for a compact two bedroom house that captured the views of Lion Rock and the Tasman Sea to the West and the rainforest views to the east. The home was to be sensitive to the unique setting, with natural materials selected to blend in with the surrounding environment
What were the solutions? A compact two bedroom house was designed with a gently sloping roof form to fit within the small building envelope allowed, while providing a sense of volume within the spaces. The offset form of the plan provides a sheltered outdoor area where the epic views of the Tasman Sea can be enjoyed while being protected from the strong westerly winds. Natural materials of stained cedar shiplap and dark profiled metal cladding allow the house to settle comfortably within the rainforest setting.
What were the key challenges? The site was a sloping triangular shape in an area of natural significance. This meant that strict planning regulations constrained the size and volume of the house, as well as restricting the material selections on the exterior. This was the clients first home and the budget was modest.
What building methods were used? The house is a lightweight timber framed construction, with cedar shiplap and profiled metal cladding. Tasmanian Oak flooring and screening is used in the interior along with plywood lining and green mosaic tiles to draw the colours and textures from the surrounding rainforest into the house.

I’ve been creating again! Check out my Pagan Prayer beads I’ve made myself! I’ve got to remove the extra split ring between each bead as I feel they are a little to long. I have used nice pearl beads, 13 of them for the 13 Goals for a modern Witch. White due to it substituting any other colour and 13 was the date my daughter was born (and yes actually Friday the 13th 😈😈). I’ve have 7 larger clear crystal beads for the 7 rules of life (also my life number). 5 representing the 5 elements. Blue for water, red for fire, clear and yellow mix for air and golden tigers eye for earth (but tigers eye is for protection also as I laid intent for protection as well). Finally 2 white and a purple diamond beads to represent the 3 Fold Belief. I have a clear small crystal wad between each bead as a spacer bead to extend the length. Once I take those extra rings out it will be perfect ❤️#witchycrafts #creativewitch #paganrosary #paganrosarybeads #paganprayerbeads #witchcraft #bluphoenix #kiwiwitch #witchbluphoenix (at Timaru City, New Zealand) https://www.instagram.com/p/B2lCem2piqR/?igshid=16x3futcsc5p2

11.03.17: (Creative Workflows) Research on youth suicide
While Coroner Wallace Bain didn't think the unusual form of "cyber bullying" was to blame, he said the use of social media websites, such as Facebook and Twitter, by young people was a "major issue". Ministry of Education bullying prevention guidelines state as young people use a range of digital devices, the boundaries between the physical and digital environment have become increasingly blurred.
About 93% of 15 to 24 year-old New Zealanders are internet users, with social media the most common online activity. Today's teenagers don't need to read beauty magazines to see picture-perfect bodies. They're in front of their noses; on their phones, on Instagram, in between photos of them and their friends. Adolescence is one of the most sensitive times in a person's life, according to Dr Frances Jensen, author of The Teenage Brain: A Neuroscientist's Survival Guide to Raising Adolescents and Young Adults. A teenager's brain can learn faster, but can also get damaged faster. "It's more than an act you can describe as selfish, it's an act of so much deep vulnerability, there's no way for that person to find a way out."
It's an unfortunate part of New Zealand's psyche, that so much emphasis is placed on "toughening up". Yet where is the resilience? "We've got to get it in the open and we've got to get rid of the stigma. We've got to start talking to our children. Silence is suicide's friend”, he says. “It's being swept under the carpet. It's still perceived to be the ultimate sin and a huge shame." As long as society doesn't talk about suicide, people won't know how to talk about suicide.
“Not everyone who's been touched by suicide wants to speak publicly about their experience but they should talk to someone”, he says. "Our approach to suicide prevention could be greatly improved if we spent more time educating ordinary New Zealanders on their attitudes. Their judgmental and off-the-cuff remarks in regards to attention-seeking and cowardly behaviour – these common cliches that are thrown around – the impact is that there are 569 New Zealanders who would rather die and leave their families behind, than openly talk about their problems and be judged by other people." Judge Deborah Marshall said there needed to be more discussion about suicide prevention and how family, friends and colleagues could identify someone at risk and help them get professional support. The figures are so high that suicide is the third highest cause of death after heart disease and lung cancer.
"There's that stigma, I suppose, you want to talk about your feelings but you [feel] you shouldn't. Especially as a man, you've got that expectation that you shouldn't feel emotions; that you should just be this rock.
The most recent finalised statistics from the Ministry of Health show that in 2012, just over 3000 people were treated in hospital after a suicide attempt, having seriously harmed themselves.
After a drop in rates in the late 1990s, the number of people who take their lives every year has remained at a relatively static level even though prevention programmes and strategies have been in place for more than a decade - and have an end date of this year.
Timaru-based GP Dr Oliver Bourke said last week that because the threshold ruling a death to be suicide was so high, the real number was far off the reported number. The true number could be three times higher due to the cases where the coroner couldn't give a ruling on because there is a slight doubt, he said. Former Chief Coroner Neil MacLean, too, said the real number was likely to be higher than official statistics recorded, because some apparent road deaths, drownings and even overdoses might in fact be intentionally self-inflicted.

Richard Pearse is reputed to have made a powered flight in a heavier-than-air craft, a monoplane of his own construction, that crash lands on a hedge. This date is computed from circumstantial evidence of eyewitnesses as the flight was not well documented at the time. The machine made a flight claimed to be around 150 feet (45 m) on his farm at Upper Waitohi, near Timaru in south Canterbury, New Zealand.
