Pourtant, l’industrie numérique a elle aussi un impact considérable sur la santé de notre planète. Dans notre société hyperconnectée, où téléviseurs, téléphones intelligents et ordinateurs, pour n’en nommer que quelques-uns, font partie intégrante de notre quotidien, serions-nous vraiment capables de nous en départir ? Si cette perspective semble peu réaliste, une prise de conscience des conséquences de nos usages d’appareils numériques est néanmoins essentielle pour réduire notre empreinte écologique.

Mais qu’est-ce que la pollution numérique ? Il s’agit d’un terme qui « désigne toutes les formes de pollution engendrées par le secteur informatique : émissions de gaz à effet de serre, contamination chimique, érosion de la biodiversité, production de déchets électroniques » (GreenPeace, 2024). Elle survient tout au long du cycle de vie des appareils numériques, de leur fabrication à leur usage, en passant par le stockage des données.
Une pollution bien ancrée dans nos habitudes
Notre utilisation quotidienne des appareils électroniques et de l’Internet a un impact significatif sur l’environnement. La pollution numérique comprend deux aspects : la production d’appareils électroniques et le fonctionnement du réseau Internet.
La production d’appareils électroniques nécessite des matériaux rares et coûteux à extraire, ce qui entraîne une pollution environnementale. Plus un appareil est grand et complexe, plus il a d’impact sur l’environnement. Cela inclut les combustibles fossiles, l’eau et les ressources, qu’elles soient naturelles ou humaines. Par exemple, produire un ordinateur nécessite 2,5 tonnes de matières premières et génère 350 kg de CO₂. Cela s’applique à tous vos appareils électroniques ! Taper directement le nom des sites dans la barre d’adresse ou utiliser les favoris, afin de limiter le nombre de recherches sur les moteurs, qui émettent jusqu’à quatre fois plus de GES qu’un accès direct.
Limiter le stockage sur le cloud, en conservant uniquement les fichiers nécessaires sur des disques locaux ou externes.
Prolonger la durée de vie de nos appareils en les réparant plutôt qu’en les remplaçant, ou en optant pour des appareils de seconde main.

Dans une société où l’innovation technologique progresse à une vitesse fulgurante, il est temps d’adopter une approche tout aussi rapide pour minimiser son impact environnemental.
