(Un)natural Landscapes - Soviet climate disaster Edition
Death of the Sea. Aral used to be the 4th largest lake in the world on the territory of Kazakhstan and Uzbekistan. However, due to Soviet government relentlessly using it for irrigation, it dried up and the surface area shrank by 60%, volume by 80%. Now, most of the sea is a dry dessert with eerie looking ships in the sand.
Gates of Hell. The Darvaza gas crater. It is a burning natural gas field, collapsed into a cavern in Turkmenistan. The crater formed in 1971, allegedly when Soviet geologists were drilling for oil and natural gas. Years later it was set ablaze to prevent the poisonous gas from escaping and has not stopped burning.
Ever-Red Forest. The Ginger forest is a ten-square-kilometer area surrounding the Chernobyl Nuclear Power Plant in Ukraine and Belarus. The name comes from the ginger-brown color of the pine trees after they died, following the absorption of high levels of ionizing radiation. Usually an evergreen pine forest ominously turned red.
I used references for shipwrecks, the skeleton and the deer!!

I remembered about Centralia at about 11 o'clock last night so my current Wikipedia rabbit hole is in the category Landscape Features That Are Just Way More On Fire Than Is Reasonable Or Expected, Please Stop Being So On Fire.
It's difficult when you really don't want to go to the USA under any circumstances, but you really do want to stand by a crack in the road in Centralia, holding a wooden plank and a walkie-talkie, refusing to just step over the damn crack.
Burning Mountain in Australia has been on fire for 6000 years, which I think is a fine answer to any "why" question. "Don't fuckin' ask me, mate; there's this mountain in Australia that's been on fire for 6000 years. Why does anything happen?"
Smoking Hills in Canada have merely been burning for "centuries", but in their defence, they are right next to the Arctic Ocean, so I think they probably try harder.
Both main theories about the Darvaza gas crater in Turkmenistan say it was torched 4-5 decades ago to make it less dangerous. I'm not saying this was a bad plan; I'm just saying it's been on fire ever since and is now known as the Door To Hell.

Dear Geneva Anon,
Irish people are feisty, boisterous, addictive, sentimental and larger than life. They also tend to often be jealous as hell(water - wee lame joke, again) and possessive, without ever admitting to it.
I very clearly remember an intercontinental tantrum thrown by Someone (1/2 Irish) by email (!), when I was traveling alone along the Silk Road and reached the Karakum Desert in Turkmenistan, visiting the Darvaza gas crater and sleeping in a tent under the stars, in the lunar emptiness we usually call the middle of nowhere. An Internet curfew made any contact impossible until I finally reached the Uzbek Karakalpakstan province, some five days later. I then found a truckload of WHERE ARE YOU? I AM SICK WITH WORRY. DO NOT PLAY GAMES WITH ME WOMAN emails, ranging from an improvised rubaiyat to pleading in at least three languages of shared use. That was 2010, Anon, and he knew perfectly well where the hell I was during all that time (he started the bet that sent me there and he planned the whole trip, FFS!) - still, bless his heart, could not help himself.
As far as I and my own life experience are concerned, FWIW, Anon the answer to your unasked question is a resounding yes. And I bet she would gladly send anytime that foolish Geneva girl straight through that Darvaza gas crater, aka the Door to Hell. Here, Anon, I found the pics of that desert road trip for you:

Also, the tent: the strangest night in my entire life, easily.

But you know what, Anon? I wasn't really interested by that BTS Season 2 tidbit, to be perfectly honest with you. Those banging pots, pans and that coughing boiler were far more telling than anything else.
Amen. Hope my convoluted answer helped, somehow.

Is it rude to ask... I have to know what YWIMC's word count is LOL. You said 33 chapters and I almost passed out. That is like the Darvaza gas crater of slow burns.
Not rude at all! Let me check real quick….
….my stories usually fall between 120k-150k words for reference. They are big novels. The chapters are short, though….
….33,648 words plus…21,529 equals….
55,177. So a little over halfway done :)
And since starting YWIMC in Mid March….Aw fuck I can’t do math right now. My brain is fried.😂✨

The Darvaza gas crater is a burning natural gas field collapsed into a cavern near Darvaza, Turkmenistan. Nicknamed the “Gates of Hell,” the crater has a diameter of 230 feet (70 meters) and a depth of about 66 feet (20 meters). How the crater formed and ignited remains unknown, but it is believed to have been purposefully lit in the 1980s to prevent emission of poisonous gases. In 2022, then Turkmen President announced plans to extinguish it.
