ygo5dsmonth/Week 2024 Day 2 - The New Classic
When it comes to clothes the Dark Signer's robes are my favorites. I love the matching cloaks (with the different outfits for each one underneath) and that the colors are aligning with their Earthbound Gods. They even gave out cloaks to their shadow drones, they're very committed to that style
And I could never leave out Godwin and his stupid, fancy bird shirt
I love thos blues. And the collar
As for more normal, everyday clothes, I think some outfits from the games look really good, like Misaki's here, it got just the right amount of bling
The coolest looking D-Wheel is Giganto L...
... red version
And another thing...
Yuzu has the coolest riding suit (I guess it's technically Rin's though)

A lot of people talk about Dark Signers but honestly so far the Fortune Cup arc (1-26) is one of the most solid openings in a Yugioh series.
The way you're suddenly thrown into the world, shown the contrast between Satellite and Neo Domino City, the disparity, the overall darker atmosphere, the duels on motorbikes...it's just amazing.
I had some issues with the DS arc pacing and some duels were outright terrible but honestly Fortune Cup is a solid wonder from the beginning to the end.
In some ways it feels like a rehash of Duelist Kingdom but it quickly becomes more than that (it's similar with Dark Signers and Battle City btw). It's engaging, every character of the main cast has a moment to shine, it avoids feeling like a generic Monster-of-the-Week format, the animation is generally excellent and engaging (it's a big shock coming from GX's PowerPoint-esque cheap animation).

For some people the world is wonderful, for others it is torn. Many believe that this is based on the environment you grew up to. Whether you had most of the things you wanted and whether you couldn't even afford the basics. However, could there really be someone who believes that and yet, thinks that things can change? Even if they have been abandoned by actual society could they still only know how to make steps forward? After being alone for almost their entire life after so many losses and never ending spits of blood to save the ones of importance? In the end though, there comes a rough time in everyone's life where they have to make a choice. We can follow a path of light full of hope and a long fight with trophy our freedom. We can also follow another path, a one tainted by pure darkness. This choice is one our hero will need to make as well. This is HIS story. A story not about someone who chose light, someone who fell in the dark or someone who chose light through evil means. It is about the tragic one who wanted to follow the light so much that he, eventually, lost it all....

hi i'm not complaining but why is dark signer kalin's outfit kinda yassified??? the fucking crop top and the visible midriff... that certainly was a design decision
I was gonna respond to this with some cool outfit analysis like "Oh well Satellite clothing tends to have heavy punk and grunge influences, so him having off the wall alternative fashion might be a deliberate choice to try and still style himself as a radical freedom fighter" but then I looked again and I AM 90% SURE HE'S JUST WEARING A CROP TOP MADE FROM THE SAME SHIRT HE WORE WHEN HE WAS ALIVE
BRO OWNS ONE SHIRT
#bro did you come back and immediately decide to alter your one (1) shirt so you could expose your midriff?#I'm just picturing him sitting at the dark signers Evil Conference Table painstakingly sewing by candlelight#why does he wear thigh high boots over his jeans? Thats the real yassification here#asks#answered asks#yugioh#yugioh 5ds#ygo 5ds#5ds#kalin kessler#kyosuke kiryu

ygo5dsmonth/Week 2024 Day 4 - iDuel
Since the prompt is music, I thought we could talk about the visuals in the 5D's openings maybe? So here are my favorite parts, and some things I noticed in general
Opening 1 Kizuna
The beginning with the Signers, Godwin and the dragon marks looks super cool. Too bad I don't like the music that goes along with it, haha. A little Jack and Yusei heavy, but it's alright, at least the side characters get time to shine too
Opening 2 Last Train
It's soooo good, a like practically everything here. The new characters and monsters get presented well, and everyone has some solid screen presence. The coolest parts are the view of the Dark Signers in their lair, Kiryu appearing on his D-Wheel, and the Signers at the end (the Dark Signers look cooler though, sorry fellas)
Only thing that bothers me is how Godwin shows up so little in the opening, he's (barely) more in the ending ffs, and he's the final villain of this arc. I know that was a twisted plot twist and I'm the only one who cares, but still
Opening 3 Freedom
Phew, the opening wastes no time to tell you that this is the Yusei/Jack/Crow show now, Rua, Ruka and Aki get into the back right now! And if you're focusing so heavily on the boys at least let them do something other than standing/driving casually, you're not really hyping me up like this OP. Fun fact: this was the first japanese opeining the german dub decided to leave in, after they started dubbing the 4kids version and did their own synchro
Sherry's face looks fuckin weird in this
Why should I care about the stupid WRGP (You're a grand prick!) again? Sigh, tournaments for the sole sake of getting better at something work better before you save the world from certain doom (but that's a writing problem not an opening problem)
The Majestic/Savior dragons look cool at least, and I like that this sequence kinda mirrors the dragons from Last Train, just in their evolved forms
Opening 4 Believe in Nexus
The villains get to look cool for a hot minute, damn. Although Lucciano is the only one with rollerblades, so him sliding and everything makes sense. The other two...are robots and ignore how uncomfortable this should be
Sherry too? They must feel really sorry for having to remove her from the plot
Ally of Justice monsters, so scary! Isn't that the archetype that only ever had one good monster, a generic synchro? But of course everyone has to be dumbass in this arc and plays light monsters, which Ally of Justice is strong against
Opening 5 Road to Tomorrow-Going My Way!!
This is intense as you can see on the two exclamation marks in the title. At long last the other Signers get to be something other than background filler. Also it's so fuckin funny how Yusei and Crow roll out all their Synchros, even those they don't use anymore
and meanwhile Jack...
I refuse to play anything besides Red Demon's Dragon!!!
Jack: Man, I'm sure gonna miss to have someone to stand on rooftops with, once Arc V rolls arround

Just finished the Dark Signers arc from Yu-Gi-Oh! 5Ds
I'll give a more extended opinion later but I'm just going to say...the series could end right here and I'd say it ended on a very high note.

dunno if you've ever been asked, but what are your thoughts on z-one? He's one of my favorite final boss villains in YGO but I know (especially for a while) people didn't like him due to the fakeout of not being an evil Yusei.
Hey there! As a matter of fact, I have not been asked. I think Z-ONE's a fine antagonist, frankly. The setup to get to him takes a while, but the reveal when he finally shows up is pretty good where I'm concerned. (Of course, some things about him are plagued by the same plotholes as the entire WRGP—mostly, the scope of his "godlike" powers is very, very unclear. But since it adds a lot of pizzazz, I can usually overlook it.) Moreover, I think the initial reveal of his face—where it's unclear whether or not he's Yusei at first—is perfect, because it really throws you for a loop.
That said, I'm a bit in two minds about the identity thing. On one hand, I get why people wanted him to be Yusei, as in, the actual, real Yusei, who was simply pushed to his limits by a horrid, inescapable future. The sheer amount of angst would have been unparalleled. And it would have posed the very interesting question of just what it would take to push Yusei, our very own protagonist, that far. After all, he's the hero, he's the one preaching hope and friendship even when everyone else has given up on it already. Just the implications alone of a person like Yusei—Yusei—being pushed far enough to become the villain would have been downright cataclysmic. It would have sold the sheer hopelessness of the Meklord future like nothing else. So I get why people wanted it to be true, there's certainly potential there.
But at the same time... I'm not sure I can bring myself to see it. And a lot of that has to do with what canon presents us before the big reveal of Z-ONE's face already. First, there's the fact that it's Yusei. As I said, this is the guy who's all-in on loyalty, hope, and friendship even when nobody else is. It is arguably one of his, if not the defining trait he has. To topple that unwaveringness by implying even he could be pushed to give up on these things... I don't know if it might not have soured his character a bit in some people's eyes. Even if it might have been more realistic, even if it might have been human. Then, there's also the things we get about Z-ONE, as a character, before the reveal. And yes, I concede that's very little, but frankly? It's enough to make him feel like he absolutely couldn't be Yusei to me. Like yes, granted, the unavoidable future of despair™ would have probably changed his personality somewhat, but to that degree? Z-ONE acts nothing like Yusei to me. His tactics in manipulating Sherry, the way he speaks with Aporia during their duel, hell, the sodding Timelords he plays. I mean, sure, obviously they gave him a completely different deck so they could a.) sell more cards and so b.) the reveal could be delayed a little longer for more tension, but something about the idea that Yusei, had he actually been Z-ONE, would have completely abandoned his old deck, kept not even a single card, not even Stardust, or Speed Warrior, or Scrap-Iron Scarecrow, doesn't sit right with me. And that's obviously not touching on the timeline shenanigans that don't quite match up, because Z-ONE's ruined future is implied to be far away enough to exceed Yusei's own lifespan. (Now, if they had actually written Z-ONE to act more like Yusei, and to perhaps, damningly, have kept some of Yusei's cards, I might have been more on board with the idea.)
I don't know, I might be in the minority there, but I think Z-ONE was fine the way he was in canon. We got the shock moment of him possibly being Yusei without delving into either the emotional can of worms, nor the timeline nonsense can of worms that would have come with him actually being Yusei. Z-ONE is an excellent, end-of-show antagonist to me, with or without that extra angst. I don't usually like fakeouts that much, either, but this one, I'll happily tolerate. (Though I would argue the guy could have used just a smidgen more setup and would be even stronger if not for the nonsense worldbuilding of the Meklords. But everyone and their mother who knows my blog knows how I feel about the Meklords, worldbuilding-wise.)
#yugioh 5ds#yusei fudo#z-one#ask the orchid#*holds up z-one* I just think he's neat#tha dark signers still get me marginally more hyped#but I am self-aware enough to admit that's mostly because of aesthetics#I'm a sucker for the vengeful goth squad#that said z-one's a very good antagonist to end the show on#but yeah there you go!#orchid rambles
