I've watched 100 episodes of the '60s gothic soap opera Dark Shadows! And I made this graphic to map the characters for funsies. At least one of them has already died. ...Well I included Josette the ghost so I guess at least two of them have already died.
This is my first time properly watching a soap opera, so it's interesting to me how the show spins its wheels and spreads out over a large cast to slow its plots during daily episodes. I really don't mind some slow pacing, but it's when characters keep having the same conflicts without changing that I can get a bit annoyed. Carolyn and David in particular have fooled me a few times into thinking they've evolved before having their 10th confrontation with other people about the same thing.
I think my favourite character for most of the show has been Roger Collins. I don't mean that I like him, I mean that I find it very entertaining when bad things keep happening to him, and just when I think he's learnt a hint of humility, he becomes the biggest bastard on god's grey Earth. It's always some inspired and new bastardly action, so he doesn't often bore me.
I've read that Victoria's search for her parentage is basically forgotten about after this point, which is a little sad and a little funny since it was one of the main driving forces of the show when it began. But I am certainly looking forward to the more supernatural plots that I know are going to take over the show eventually.
#my posts#dark shadows 1966#dark shadows#I'm happy with how the graphic turned out#and I'm enjoying the show too!

Okay, Iâm thinking about the âMina is a reincarnation of Draculaâs dead loverâ subplot in Francis Ford Coppolaâs Bram Stokerâs Dracula again. Because as far as I have been able to tell, the chain of events is this:
In 1966, Dan Curtis creates the supernatural soap opera Dark Shadows, which features a major plot line about 18th-century vampire Barnabas Collins pursuing a modern woman who he believes is the reincarnation of his dead lover, Josette
In 1974, Dan Curtis adapts Dracula as a made-for-TV movie, and recycles that romance plot, because seemingly no director who has ever adapted Dracula has cared about the original novel even a little bit
In 1992, Francis Ford Coppola releases Bram Stokerâs Dracula, in which Dracula pursues Mina Murray because he believes sheâs the reincarnation of his dead lover
So did Francis Ford Coppola steal that plot point just because he thought it was cool, or did he fully not read the book? Did he just watch an adaptation and go, âsure, this is Dracula!â
#sorry this post hits on two pieces of media i dearly love that get misunderstood because of their adaptations#so i might be saltier than i need to be#but like a lot of people think that that plot line is in the original novel and itâs not!!! itâs not.#just once i would like a Dracula adaptation that cares about the original characters and their dynamics#yknow?#and donât get me STARTED on the tim burton dark shadows#(i mean you actually canât bc i havenât seen it. iâm just mad bc if you mention dark shadows ppl go âoh right the tim burton movie.â#they have no idea about the wildness that is the original 1969s soap opera.)#dark shadows 1966#dracula#barnabas collins#mina murray#mina harker

I'm considering watching the original Dark Shadows TV show. Just because I'm curious what an old, gothic soap opera is like. So am I going to watch 1225 episodes out of curiosity? Knowing me... quite probably.
I really don't need another massive TV show to get invested in. But I really am not going to be surprised when I get into it anyway.
#dark shadows#dark shadows 1966#if I watch 1 episode per day I'll be done in 3 and a bit years#Part of me wants to wait until October to start#I wonder if there's an active online fandom for it
