Cine: Borstal Boy (2000)

La política local e internacional confluyen en esta adaptación de la novela autobiográfica de Brendan Behan publicada en 1958. En 1941, el mundo está amenazado por el avance de Hitler en Europa mientras Inglaterra afronta un conflicto propio con el IRA (Irish Republican Army, o el Ejército Republicano Irlandés).

Brendan (Shawn Hatosy, estadoundiense con raíces irlandesas), ya a los dieciséis años en las filas del IRA, ingresa en un reformatorio (el borstal del título) tras se hallado con dinamita, a punto de cometer un atentado. Debido a ser menor de edad, la justicia le da una condena de tres meses. Allí coincide con otros chicos con problemas, tan británicos como los que le enseñaron a odiar; entre ellos, Dale (Lee Ingleby, visto en "Harry Potter y el prisionero de Azkaban", 2004), que se ganó su estadía debido a un acto de abuso sexual. También se topa con Charlie Milwall (Danny Dyer), un marinero que recibe constante acoso debido a su aparente homosexualidad, y con Liz (Eva Birthistle), la bella hija artista de CA Joyce (Michael York), a cargo del borstal.

Además de la política, la figura de Oscar Wilde, un irlandés desprejuiciado que fue condenado por su homosexualidad, emerge como esencial en la historia, y no sólo por los avances de Charlie a Brendan, a quién llama "ángel". El ansia de la libertad, preludio de la tragedia, le dará un nuevo sentido a la visión que Behan tiene de la vida mientras asoma una relación entre él y Liz.

Peter Sheridan dirige una película que, en la misma tradición de otros clásicos que muestran una relación gay en tiempos turbulentos, como "Maurice" (1987) y "Another Country" (1984), no escatima en sensibilidad a la hora de narrar una amistad cálida y entrañable.

Rivals, published in 1988, is part of Dame Jilly Cooper's Rutshire Chronicles series and has now been adapted into an eight-part series of the same name. Some of the Disney+ series were filmed in Tetbury, a town and civil parish inside the Cotswold district in Gloucestershire, England.

Football Factory (2004) Welcome to a day in the life of a football hooligan, as we follow the day to day life of Tommy Johnson on his countdown to destruction. Booze, blood and batterings are the name of the game here. Football Factory is a no holds barred fuck-a-thon that stops at nothing to get its point across. Interestingly enough, this film had the Executive Producers of none other than @rockstargames! And has a sneaky little cameo of GTA Vice City inside, which I thought was cool! But anyways back to the matter at hand. What you have here is a cultural film. For anyone living elsewhere, this probably wouldn’t hit home as much as it does with us Brits. Going down the boozer on match day, the walk to the ground, living for the weekend and everything it entails is great and is represented here! The soundtrack features some great little numbers like The Jam, The Libertines and other London bands to create a feel of the time and atmosphere. The atmosphere is consistent and getting into situations with Tommy can either G you up or make you feel just as anxious as he does during the film! Referring to my earlier point, the films reliance on its culture is both good and bad. It’s good because for people like myself, I get it, and understand subtle references etc. However for wider audiences, it can leave them confused, especially with the heavy London slang and cockney rhymes. It stars Danny facking Dyer, among other well known actors that all play similar roles in other hooligan type films to bring together a strong cast that all gel together as if they’re in their own firm! Overall, Football Factory is a wicked nod in the direction of the life of a football hooligan. With some brilliant references, a heavy cultural influence and a fun soundtrack, it’s definitely worth a watch... I mean...
