Danny Kaye (The Court Jester, The Inspector General)—Danny Kaye, idol of my childhood, maker of the weirdest faces! This man SETS HIMSELF ON FIRE and then puts himself out in a bucket in a movie based on a Gogol short story. In the same movie (Inspector General), he flirts by playing a carrot as a musical instrument. In Wonder Man, he's brilliant but struggles with things like riding buses. I have been envious of his fake Italian/French/German/Spanish monologues in The Court Jester for the past three decades. As Walter Mitty, he is SUPREMELY SILLY yet also somehow manages to be a comic foil for none other than Boris Karloff. All this is to say nothing of The William Tell Song (TV, thus not linked, but great.) I adore him.
Burgess Meredith (Of Mice and Men, That Uncertain Feeling, Second Chorus)—I first saw him in Idiot's Delight. He was standing next to Clark Gable on a balcony. I didn't even notice Gable was there, Meredith's scrungle game was too strong. -5'5 1/2 (1.66m) -He is THE weirdest little freak in That Uncertain Feeling, Merle Oberon picks him up in a psychiatrist's lobby. He's a concert pianist but he hates that people pay to hear him play, he can't stand them watching him. Vases offend him. He sees himself in an abstract painting. He's an absolutely chaotic gremlin and I love him SO much -He plays PENGUIN in the old Batman series!! What's scrunglier than that?! -"Was fascinated by the subject of non-human intelligence, particularly dolphins. He once believed that a dolphin somehow called to him for help in the middle of the night while he was staying at a friend's home on the beach. He ran out and found the dolphin, caught in a net under a dock down the beach, although there was no way he should have been able to know it was there. He released it, saving its life. He believed it had made some sort of connection with him, perhaps telepathic, to call for help." [IMDb] -He will forever be my favourite portrayal of George from Of Mice and Men, his speech about "seeds" and dreaming about a farm of his own wrecked me -In Tom, Dick and Harry, he's one of three suitors courting Ginger Rogers. It's zany and ridiculous, an absolute rollercoaster. He teachers to bowl with his sleeves rolled up. He drives a 3-wheeled motorcycle -He's in a MUSICAL with FRED ASTAIRE they're romantic rivals for PAULETTE GODDARD. He also wears a bucket hat. (Second Chorus) -His hair is VERY floofy in his early roles, I think that should be taken into consideration 4:54: [link to whole movie, editor has not watched it + can't vet but confirmed his hair is fluffy for the minute she did watch]
This is round 1 of the contest. All other polls in this bracket can be found here. If you're confused on what a scrungle is, or any of the rules of the contest, click here. Reminder that this is a movie poll, not a TV poll, in case any of you were flocking to any bird-brained ideas.
[additional submitted propaganda + scrungly videos under the cut]
Danny Kaye:
He's so stupid. I love him.
youtube
Burgess Meredith:
Look at his face! He looks like a little field mouse, and a field mouse is scrungly. Admittedly I know him more from the Twilight Zone, in which he reached levels of peak scrungle, but I believe he deserves a place on this list.

Mending a Family 54/54
Prev | Mending a Family Master Post
A family is forgiven, goodbyes are given, and promises are made
Well, here it is, the final chapter
Dick was not jealous. He wasn’t! Just because Danny greeted Lian as his cousin, Roy as Uncle Roy, and Raven as Auntie Raven doesn’t mean Dick was jealous.
Is that the truth? Are those your genuine emotions? Dinah’s voice echoed in Dick’s head.
Okay, maybe he was jealous. But it wasn’t fair! He had his first nephew, and Danny was avoiding him, and when he wasn’t avoiding him, he was glaring at him with glowing green eyes.
Why isn’t it fair? Didn’t you do the same with Mar’i?
Ugh, being self-aware was annoying.
Jason laughed loudly with his whole body at something Roy had said. Even Danny smiled at whatever Roy had said. Dick gritted his teeth. Jason had never laughed with him like that. Well, it’s not as if Dick had given him many opportunities to laugh with Dick when he was younger. Dick regrets not getting closer to Jason when he was younger. Things might have been different if he hadn’t been so angry and jealous. By the time their relationship had started to get better, Jason had died. When he returned, well, there was no relationship to be had.
Dick’s phone beeped again with a notification. He had been receiving messages from his siblings who wanted to know how Jason and their newfound niblings were or from Mar’i wanting to know when she would see her new cousins and uncle.
Dick ignored them. He didn’t know what else to tell them. He had already updated them that Danny and Jason were fine.
Bruce walked up to Dick.
“He seems happy,” Bruce said in a neutral tone. Dick had been around the man long enough to know it was probably eating him inside. Like a typical rich kid, Bruce wasn’t used to sharing.
“Yeah, he does. I’m…happy for him.”
Even to Dick, his tone sounded insincere.
“Do you think he would want us in his life again? I’m glad to see him alive and well, but I want my son to at least speak to me. To us.”
“I don’t know, Bruce, I don’t know.”
“I will grant his wish if he doesn’t want to talk to us again, but it’ll hurt,” Bruce said. Dick stayed silent. He honestly didn’t know what to do. On the one hand, Jason was entitled to his boundaries. On the other, Dick wanted to beg his younger brother to let them back in.
Let him come to you first, Dinah’s voice sounded in his head.
“Did Talia leave already?”
“Yeah, she gave her final goodbyes to Danny, Jazz, and Jason and left.”
“Huh,” Dick was glad. He understood he was both Damian’s and, ugh, Jason’s mother, but he couldn’t stand the woman.
Danny suddenly turned to them and glared with his eerie green eyes. Every time he saw those Lazarus green eyes, Dick felt uneasy. Dick felt the sudden paranoia that Danny could read his thoughts. After all, he didn’t know what powers Danny had.
Danny snarled silently, showing tiny fangs.
“Children hold a lot of sway with their parents,” Dick said, “If Danny wants nothing to do with us, Jason is most likely to follow his son’s wishes.”
Bruce said nothing. Eventually, he left Dick and walked up to Roy and Jason.
Dick watched as Danny’s scowl deepened. The little boy left the group when Bruce started talking with Jason. Roy crossed his arms and glared at Bruce, not hiding it from Bruce.
Danny walked toward Lian and started talking to her. The little girl laughed at whatever Danny said. Dick smiled weakly. It was their fault that Jason had left. After all, they abandoned him first. They had no right to feel saddened.
It didn’t mean he didn’t feel it.
____
Danny didn’t like Bruce or Dick. They had been the cause of his dad’s suffering, Them and the whole so-called Batfamily.
Yes, even Alfred and Barbara, though dad always talked about them fondly.
After all, Alfred could have easily visited dad when he was feeling down, Bruce’s rules be damned. And Barbara’s crumbs of talking to dad occasionally probably caused him to feel more acutely alone. Barbara could’ve easily fought harder for his dad instead of just talking to him occasionally.
Danny sighed. He stared at his daddy, talking to both Dick and Bruce.
His dad always had an air of melancholy surrounding him, no matter how much Danny and Jazz tried to help. There were times when he would be happy, and then out of nowhere, bam, depression would hit.
Danny didn’t feel even a hint of it now. His dad still missed his old family, even though they had hurt him.
Danny wished he could say he didn’t understand, but he did. Because even though his parents had hurt him, a part of him still wanted their love and acceptance, even though it was too late now.
So, why not allow his dad to reconnect with his old family? They seemed to be trying, and dad looked more at peace. Even though Danny hated it, he would give that stupid family a chance.
He glared at Bruce and Dick, but if they hurt his dad in any way, well, he was half-ghost. He smiled chillingly. His smile widened when he saw Bruce tense, and Dick rub the back of his neck uneasily.
They would get their chance, but it would only be one.
____
Jason gave Bruce his phone number. Logically, he knew Bruce had it from his call for help, but this made it more official.
“Call or text me, but for the love of God, don’t be like Tim texting me at two in the morning telling me he figured out who stole the left socks. As interesting as the dog/human hybrid was, I just wanted to sleep.”
Dick flinched.
“Yeah, sorry about that. He was obsessed. He didn’t sleep for a week straight until he caught him. And that’s why you don’t play with genetics, boys and girls.”
“Alfred and I tried,” Bruce tried to defend himself, “God, did we try.”
Jason snorted, “Timmy needs to learn to let it go and sleep, and you need to learn to put your foot down. Besides, it’s Gotham. It’s not the strangest thing I’ve seen.”
After all, they had a bat-themed villain and a bat-themed hero.
Dick looked as if he was about to say something. He looked uncomfortable.
“I know about Mar’i. Roy told me.”
“I’m sorry, Little Wing.”
Jason shrugged, trying not to show his hurt, “I understand. I wasn’t exactly in the best state of mind when I returned.”
“Still,” Dick said and left it at that.
“I missed you, Jason.”
“We all have,” Bruce added, “Do you think you’ll ever find it in you to forgive us? Maybe to visit?”
Jason tackled Bruce in a hug. Both Bruce and Dick were surprised when they heard a chirp leave Jason’s lips.
“Little wing, did you just chirp like a bird,” Dick asked. His grin said everything: he had found blackmail material. He was still an older brother, after all.
“Ghost children chirp at their parents and family,” Danny came up to them, “it’s a privilege to have a ghost chirping at family.”
Danny glared at Dick, daring him to make fun of his father. Jason felt grateful to Danny. He didn’t think he’d be able to take any of Dick’s ribbing at the moment. He still felt too raw.
“Sorry, guys, it won’t happen again.”
“No, Jason, it’s cute! I promise I won’t say anything, but don’t deny something that’s a part of you,” Dick said.
Bruce was silent, but his eyes were loud with questions. Jason appreciated that Bruce had kept all the questions to himself so far. He didn’t know where he would even begin to explain his powers and half-life.
“Thanks for helping me and Danny. I can’t tell you how grateful I am.”
Bruce put his hand on Jason’s shoulder.
“Always, Jay lad, always.”
Jason hugged his dad again.
Things weren’t perfect, but they were better.
____
Bruce didn’t want to leave. Neither did Dick, but they had responsibilities. Gotham had been without Batman for three days, and Blüdhaven without Nightwing. Besides, they both had children they also had to care for.
As much as Bruce wanted to be with Jason and his family for a while longer, it wasn’t in the cards.
Raven was waiting to the side, giving the family a bit of privacy before she teleported them back.
“You’ll come and visit? Alfred really misses you, and everyone else wants to get to know you and your little family.”
“Yeah, Bruce, we’ll visit. I don’t know when, but we will.”
Bruce rubbed Jason’s hair, “Are you going to let it grow back to your regular hair color? You’re not hiding from us anymore.”
“I don’t know. I’ve kind of grown fond of it. Besides, it matches Jazz’s hair color.”
Bruce nodded. He gave Jason one last hug.
“I miss you, son. I’m sorry for everything.”
“Me too,” Jason said, “me too.”
With a heavy heart, Bruce smiled at Jason and turned toward Raven. It was time to go home, but he would do better for his son and all his children this time.
Jason watched as a white light overtook Dick, Bruce, and Raven.
They were gone.
“Good riddance,” Danny said.
“Danny lad,” Jason said in a warning voice.
“Yeah, yeah, yeah. You forgave them, and we all are going to play happy family now. That doesn’t mean it wasn’t getting too crowded. I want to spend time with my family after…after what happened.”
Jason hugged his son.
“Don’t worry, son, we’re here now, and nothing will happen to us anymore.”
Jazz walked up with Ellie and stood by Danny and Jason. They smiled at each other, comfortable in the knowledge that, no matter what, they would always have each other.
I want to thank everyone who has been with me until the end. Thank you to those who have been here from the beginning to those who came halfway through or toward the end. I couldn't have done it without your support and encouragement.
Endings are hard, but hopefully, this one leaves you satisfied. I do plan to write one last one-shot of the family visiting Gotham and Wayne Manor, but that's a future project, and then I'll be done with this series.
Once again, thank you!

SuperPhantom - White Crow
Posting this now because I'm not sure I'll ever finish it.
Feel free to contribute.
White Crow SuperPhantom
(965 words)
--+--
Dean answered his ringing flip phone. And NO Sam, he doesn't need a smart phone. The battery on this thing lasts 5 days and it survives being in Dean's pocket when he's thrown against a wall by the bad guy of the week.
"Hi Bobby. Whatcha got for us?"
"I hope you've got gas in the take because this one is going to be a bit of a chase." Bobby opened. "I've got reports coming in from all over about a white crow being linked to dozens of deaths. None of the hunters who've looked into it so far have been able to track the creature or find any connections between the victims. The issue is that some of the crimes aren't fresh. The last victim, a Tim Stillion, had been dead for weeks. Can't figure out the cause because the animals had been at his body. And unless this bird can teleport, he was on the other side the country when Stillion was kill't."
Sam, who was already clickity clacking on his laptop, spoke up. "It sounds like the crow isn't a portent of death then, but just a reporter. But how is it finding the bodies?"
"Yeah," Bobby drawled "I figured you'd come to that conclusion. That's why I called you boys. Every other hunter is out here trying to end this bird when it's solved more cold cases then all of them combined. Bunch of idgits."
Dean grabbed his jacket from the back of his chair and started towards the garage. "So where are we headed Bobby? Any word on the last sighting?"
"Last couple time it was seen, it was around central Illinois."
"Let's roll"
-=-=-=-=-
Sam Manson revved her vespa and continued chasing the white crow down ST-54. They'd been at this for weeks now. And despite it all, Sam was just happy that she'd found Danny at all.
/three weeks ago/
"There's no way!" leopard print blouse said. "You look like one of my son's friends."
Danny had a tendency to drop whatever he was holding if he got summoned but for once, he kept hold of his cell phone. So when he ended up disappearing in the middle of a Doom speed run, Tucker was able to track him down. And after a few minutes (and way too few reasonable security measures) Sam and Tucker were able to watch a live stream from a web connected Nanny cam.
The room was all white, leather couches pushed back against the walls. Marble and brass coffee table set with white taper candles. Starbucks cups sitting on the ledge of the kitchen counter. And in the middle of the room, Phantom. Desperately trying to convince 6 PTA, HOA, Basic Witches that he was indeed the Ghost King that they were trying to summon.
A woman in a white gauze blouse and white wash jeans stepped forward. It must be her house, because she matched the decor. "How did you highjack the summoning?!" It was the same tone every teen has heard from their parents. The tone that said they'd already decided what had happened and were just waiting for you to admit fault.
"Hey, you summoned me. What did you even want, anyway? Pumpkin spice to be available year round? For the grocery store to accept your expired coupons? How about-"
"Now you listen to me young man," A third woman, dressed in sunny yellow and a high pony tail that did nothing to help her look younger. "You need to learn manners and your parents clearly didn't care to teach you"
("Ouch" danny mumbled, "accurate, but ouch" )
Yellow started chanting and the others quickly caught on and joined in. Danny, realizing that he was running out of time to gas light, gatekeep, or girlboss his way out of a solution, tried the old reliable Plan Z. Run away.
So he turned ghostly tail to the nearest window and - BONK! - was stopped by the shielding on the summoning circle. Which was a first. People usually forgot about that. Danny was now both impressed and worried as be felt both pressure and dread building around him as the chanting volume and speed.
Danny clutched his head as the pressure grew to a screeching point until everything released with a pop. The pressure was gone. The chanting was gone. Danny felt lighter, which was saying something given how gravity was typically just a suggestion while he was in ghost mode. Opening his eyes -and when had he closed them? - he noticed one more difference. Everyone had gotten bigger. And the furniture had gotten bigger. And the room had gotten…. uh oh. He had gotten smaller.
Danny was trying to orient himself and identify where an deep thudding was coming from when he was hit from the side. Foot steps. That's what the thudding was. They were just drastically louder when he was only tall enough to stare people in the shins. And the sidelong assault? A broom. Which connected a second time before he thought to go intangible. (Why did he always forget intangibility?)
The woman in white had gotten a broom and was swatting him towards the open patio door, her strappy white sandals stopping behind him and he frantically tried to coordinate his limbs in that same direction. His limbs did not want to coordinate but he eventually got himself out the door and the broom stopped swatting at him.
Once he cleared the threshold, the door rolled closed with a slam and the lock snicked shut.
"And don't come back unless you've learned respect!" was shouted at him from a nearby window before it, too was slammed shut.
======================================
Looking back into the house, he was met by his own reflection in the sliding glass door.
"SQUAAAAAAK!"
In which Danny and Sam are traveling the US 90's road trip style to absorb the ecto of recent (or semi-recent) murders so Danny can get enough power to break the spell and transform back.
The general hunter community is chasing a white crow and a witch to stop them from committing all these murders.
And Sam and Dean and Bobby are trying to just figure out what's going on.

The Barbarians (D.R.W/S.F.K) - Chapter 1
Summary: Sam and Danny have spent their lives with The Hunger Games hanging over their heads. For Sam, it was his only opportunity to escape the shadow his victor older brothers cast over him, sweeping him off to the side. But for Danny, each year at the reaping he prayed to anyone who would listen that his name wouldn’t get called. As the 54th Annual Hunger Games roll around, both know it’s their last year included in the reaping. It’s Sam’s last chance to prove himself worthy of the Kiszka name, and Danny’s last chance at escaping the arena.
Pairings: Danny Wagner x Sam Kiszka (eventually)
Series Genre: angst, enemies to lovers, hurt/comfort, fluff
Word Count: little over 3.3k
Warnings: AU typical events/threats/violence (later in the series), loss of parents
A/N: This fic has everything: homoerotic fight scenes, multiple nearly fatal injuries, extreme past and present trauma, a Dune quote. Plus, you can finish each chapter wanting to bang your/their heads into the wall for so many different reasons!
--------------------------------------------------------
Birthright Of Death
Sam
“I volunteer as the second male tribute.”
Jake’s words had haunted Sam for four years. For four years, he had lived under the twins’ shadows, their victory in the arena sending them straight to the top of The New World’s social queue. Sam knew they hadn’t done it to divert any attention towards themselves, yet he still felt that jealous pang in his chest every time anyone brought his brothers up. He knew the twins hadn’t been given a choice, but that didn’t change how he felt. When Josh was reaped as the first male tribute from District 1, Jake had volunteered immediately; knowing that his twin would have a better chance of making it through the games with him at his side, as The Garden allowed for two victors from the same district for the first time ever in celebration of the Second Quarter Quell.
During the games, Sam had spent every waking hour folded in front of his family’s Television, watching and waiting for any news of his brothers. Each time a cannon fired, his heart stopped as he prayed that neither of their faces would light up the small screen that night. He sat for days on end memorizing every move, every kill they made until eventually they were the last tributes still standing, knowing that one day it would be his turn in the arena. He would get his time in the spotlight, and while the twins’ victory was impressive, Sam would captivate them all. He would capture the hearts of sponsors and citizens alike, and when he won, he would join his brothers as The New World’s golden sons. He would be loved, he would be feared by all. This was his last year included in the reaping, and nothing was going to keep him from taking what was rightfully his.
--------------------------------------------------------
Monday, July 4th, 54 ADD
“Veronica, will you please hurry up?” Sam shouts the words across the house, impatience coursing through his body at how long his sister was taking to get ready. “I don’t even know why you care so much, you aren’t included in the reaping anymore.”
“Shut up, Samuel. You know how much focus will be on us, even with the twins gone to prepare to mentor their tributes. I won’t slander our family’s or district’s image by showing up looking as if I had just woken up.”
Sam says nothing, only rolling his eyes as he does one last once-over of himself in the mirror. He had been ready for hours, days, and he knew he looked like it. Pride fills him as he takes in his clean image: his best turtleneck sweater underneath a comfortable, yet fashionable button-up Joshua had given him from The Garden, his hair neatly parted with the shorter strands that framed his face swept to the sides, the rest of it in tangle free waves down to his shoulders. The two white gold chains lying across his collarbone, each adorned with a single emerald and sapphire, was the icing on the cake. They wouldn’t forget him, not with those. They’d be his “signature” items.
“If you’re so worried about being late, then leave without me.” His sister’s voice rips his attention from the mirror, startling him out of his daze.
“Fine. Just don’t take too long, if you really do care about our image.” His words are short and irritated as he makes his way through the house briskly, not even sparing a glance back as he slips out the door. Jealousy twists his stomach as he walks down the empty street, the large houses looming over him. He had no complaints about living in the victor’s village; the houses were larger, nicer, and away from the others in the district. They had better food, better clothes, better jobs, better lives. They were better than the others. But Sam wanted to earn it. He felt like an imposter; his brothers had earned that life for him, he hadn’t even lifted a finger. He had been swept to the side, forgotten about as the youngest, the nepo-sibling.
I’ll show them, I’ll fucking show them all. I refuse to be little Sammy, baby brother to the great Kiszka Twins, their “reason for winning” any longer. I won’t be a reason for victory anymore, I’ll be the winner, the victor, and I’ll finally have the respect I deserve. They’ll see.
--------------------------------------------------------
Sam didn’t even feel the finger prick as he entered the square, his adrenaline turning everything into a blur as he pressed his fingerprint into the paper, quickly finding his place in the crowd. President Sara Starcatcher’s video about the treason of the Districts, the reason for the games, becomes unintelligible mumbles as he zones it out. They had played it so many times that Sam had it memorized word for word. Finally, the escort for District 1, Electra something or other (Sam could never keep them straight in his head anymore), steps to the middle of the stage again, grinning at the crowd with vibrant blue lips.
“I always love that film!” Her smile doesn’t waver when she’s met with silence, clearing her throat quietly before continuing. “Now onto the main event!” Sam holds his breath as she moves to stand in front of the large glass bowl filled with paper. “Our male tribute from District 1 is… Aurelius Vale!”
Like fucking hell it is. “I volunteer as tribute!” Sam yells the words before Aurelius can make a move, all eyes turning to him immediately.
“Well, isn’t this something! Come over here, dear. Come up to the stage.” Ignoring the peacekeepers moving towards him, Sam nearly sprints to the stage with a smile, taking his place next to Electra. “Now, what’s your name?”
“Samuel Kiszka.” As hushed whispers flow through the crowd, Sam’s smile falters momentarily. Even in his moment, his brothers were still hanging over his head.
“Ah! And would you by any chance be related to the Kiszka Twins?”
“I am, they’re my older brothers.”
“Well, they must be very proud of you.” Sam’s face heats at the compliment, reveling in the idea that it would soon be the twins that were proud of him, not the other way around. “Now, onto our female tribute. This year’s tribute will be… Seraphina Goldwyn!”
Seraphina begins to move through the crowd with a sullen expression until another steps into the walkway, blocking her path. “I volunteer as tribute!”
As relief passes over Seraphina’s face, Sam’s expression drops as he sees who had volunteered. Fucking. Hazel. She’s been obsessed with me for years and won’t take a fucking hint that I don’t like her. I can’t believe she’ll go this far just to be around me, has she not thought this through? There can only be one victor. Despite his happiness being slightly diminished as Hazel joins him on stage, he forces the grin back onto his face as he shakes her hand. He was finally a tribute. He would finally be a victor.

Funeral Of Innocence
Danny
Monday, July 4th, 54 ADD
Danny looks at himself in the small, dirty mirror hung on the wall of his shared room, taking a deep breath as he stares back at his reflection, the collar of his only nice button-up shirt stiff and tight around his neck and biceps. He had outgrown it long ago, but knew he would never have the money to replace it. It would have been stupid to do so now anyways, it was his last year being included in the reaping, and his stomach had been twisting in anxious knots for weeks. He had been lucky this far, and he had been careful this year; staying in line around peacekeepers, keeping his head down. He hadn’t even taken out extra food rations when winter hit District 7 harder than it ever had before, not wanting his name to be cast into the reaping lottery more than it already had been. Just breathe, Daniel. Your name is only in there seven times, you know people whose names are in the lottery over 30 times. You have nothing to fear.
Except he did. He had everything to fear. He had everything to lose. When he was 14, his parents had made the mistake of getting caught trying to smuggle extra food for him and his sister, Josephine. He had watched his father get shot by Peacekeepers trying to save his mother, a useless attempt in the end as she was dragged away to The Garden. Danny knew deep down that she was long dead. He also knew he could have hated his parents for risking their lives and leaving him to care for himself and his sister, but he couldn’t bring himself to. They had just wanted to keep their children alive. They hadn’t thought they would be killed for such a mild offense, they thought they would become Avox’s if caught, at the worst.
With his parents gone, it was up to him to look after Josephine. It was his job to keep them both safe and alive, and he had gotten good at it. If he had learned anything from the loss of his parents, it was how to not get caught, teaching himself to hunt and grow what measly crops he could right under the nose of the Peacekeepers constantly patrolling his district.
“Danny?” His sister’s quiet voice rips him out of his memories, and he turns to see her standing hesitantly at the door of their room, her hands nervously fiddling with the sleeves of her dress. “We should probably leave. Don’t wanna be late for the reaping.”
“Yeah, yeah we should. You look nice by the way, kid. I know the occasion is- what it is, but still.”
“Really? You think so?”
“Of course I do, Josie. You look like mom.” He feels the sting of tears behind his eyes as she smiles at him, everything about her truly reminding him of their mother.
“Thanks, Danny. And stop calling me Josie, I’m almost 15, I’m too old for baby nicknames.”
“Oh, so now that you’re all grown up, you’re too ‘adult’ to be called Josie, huh?” Smiling at her, he makes his way across the room, taking her hand and leading her through the main room of their small house and out the front door. “What would you prefer? Jojo? What about Fifi?”
“Stop itttt. You can call me Josephine, it’s proper and lady-like.”
“Yeah, alright Madam Josephine.”
“Shut up, Danny.” As they walk though the small, dirty street of their neighborhood, her smile slowly drops as others join them, a solemn march of those included in the reaping and their families.
He feels her hand shaking in his own, offering a slight squeeze of comfort. “It’s ok, Josie. We’re gonna be fine. We haven’t taken any extra food or clothes, and your name’s only in there 4 times. We should be fine.” Should be. We should be fine. Despite his words to his sister, Danny had given up hope long ago. It was dangerous to have hope, foolish. It only ever led to disappointment in his experience, and he didn’t want to be disappointed again. Thankfully, a familiar face joins them as they near the square, filing into the neat line to check into the reaping.
“Hey sexy, how you doing on this fine, grim morning?” David Welcsh, Danny’s best friend. If there was anyone else in his district that Danny could truly call family, it was him. David and his family had always been there for him and Josie when they needed, and he knew he could always count on them if something were to happen to him, leaving Josie alone.
“Oh, you know, the usual.” Danny tries to keep a smile from his face, David’s words lightening his mood slightly despite the circumstances. “How about you?”
“Not great, Danny boy. Not great. My name’s in that goddamn bowl near 25 times, had to take out food and clothes for the family over the winter. Four siblings and all that, so my chances are not lookin’ good.”
“I’m sure you’ll be fine, winter hit everyone hard, there’s bound to be people who racked up more than you.” Danny’s heart drops at the thought of David’s name getting pulled. He couldn’t lose any more of his family, and he knew that he, like Danny, was the main source of incoming food for his own family.
“Whatever you say, Danny.” Their group says nothing more as Josie steps up to the table, her finger pricked and fingerprint taken before she looks back to Danny with wide eyes.
“Go on, Josie. Go find your place, I’ll find you after the reaping. It’s ok.” She nods slightly, fear still in her eyes before she turns from him and disappears into the crowd. After Danny and David both check in, they join the throngs of people filtering into the square, finding a spot on the male’s side as nervous, hushed whispers float through the air around them. “Hey Dave?”
“Hm?”
“If my- if my name gets pulled, I need you and your family to take care of Josie. She doesn’t know how to hunt yet, and she doesn’t know where I grow crops in hiding. I know you guys are struggling with you and your siblings already, but I can’t let her starve.”
“Of course, man. Is that even a question? You guys are honorary Welcsh’s, and I know you’d do the same for us if I get called. Why do you ask me, though? You’ll be fine, you’ve been stubborn enough to not take any extra food and not let me take any for you, what are you so worried about?”
“I don’t know… I just can’t shake this feeling I have. It’d be just my luck to get called this year, my last goddamn year.” Danny chews on the edge of his bottom lip, his eyes darting around the square, trying to find Josie. He feels slight relief when he finds her on the edge of the girls’ crowd, not too far from where he was, his mind calming when he sees that she was ok. Obviously terrified, but still ok.
“Relax, Dan. You’ll be fine.” As David gives his shoulder a light slap, the escort for their district takes the stage. She looked like The Garden’s mockery of 7, with wildflowers and feathers adorning her too-neat hair. Hues of green and gold painted onto her eyes, lips, and cheeks only sent the message that she knew nothing of 7; their district was only luscious, rich forests in her eyes. She knew nothing of the wildfires that destroyed much of their land on a regular basis, the accidents that often occurred deep in the woods. She had never seen a person crushed by a falling tree, nor an axe slipping from a young boy’s hands ending up embedded in another person’s head. She knew nothing of 7, and neither did The Garden.
The crowd becomes quiet as she steps in front of the microphone with a grin. “Welcome to the 54th annual Hunger Games, and may the odds be ever in your favor.” Met with silence once again, she continues, her infuriating smile unfaltering. “Before we begin the reaping ceremony, we have a very special, very important film straight from The Garden itself!”
“War, terrible war.” Danny tunes the rest of President Starcatcher’s speech out, rage overtaking him at the pure bullshit The Garden had been broadcasting to them for as long as he could remember. Where was The Garden’s protection when his parents were killed and taken? When he and his sister nearly starved every winter? Danny had known no protection from The Garden, and he had known no peace in his life. There was no honor or courage in the Games, and the only thing sacrificed was the lives of children, purely for The Garden’s enjoyment. Generosity and forgiveness were never given to any of the 12 districts, or at least never to any district not made up of Careers. Danny despised The Garden, and any district that played along as their pet, seemingly happy with the order of The New World.
Before Danny can further infuriate himself, the escort steps back up to the microphone as the video ends, wiping tears from her eyes delicately. “I love that film. Now, the time has come for us to choose one young man and woman for the honor of representing District 7 in this year’s Hunger Games.”
Danny’s heart freezes as she makes her way over to the large glass bowl in front of the male’s side of the square, reaching in and carefully pulling out a small piece of paper. She holds it high in front of her as she walks back to the microphone, unfolding it as she takes a breath, adding to their anticipation and dread. “The male tribute from District 7 is… Daniel Wagner.”
No. Danny feels as if he could throw up as all eyes turn to him, the boys around him taking a step back as if he were contagious. As if they’d be thrown into the arena with him if they stood too close. No, no, no, no. This can’t- this can’t be happening.
“Come on up.” The escort says the words with a smile, as if he should be happy to be picked. He wanted to punch her square in her perfect, white teeth.
“I’m so sorry, Danny.” David’s words are quiet and full of sorrow as he looks at his friend with tears in his eyes. Danny couldn’t respond, he didn’t know what to say or do except begin to shuffle through the crowd around him, trying his hardest not to cry as he walks towards the stage.
“No!” Josie breaks apart from the group as he passes her, tackling him in a hug around the middle as Peacekeepers rush to stop her.
He holds his hands up to them, hoping it would prevent them from taking any drastic measures out on her before moving them down to unwrap her arms from him. Bending to look her in the eye, he places his hands on either side of her face, his tone frantic and quiet. “It’s gonna be ok, Josie. Go back to the line and then find David when this is over. Everything’s gonna be ok.” His voice breaks as she looks up at him, tears streaming down her face as the Peacekeepers began to pull her back to her spot. “It’s ok, Josie.”
“No, no, please!”
“It’s ok, Josie. It’s ok.” When he ensures that she was safe once again, he resumes his path to the stage, Peacekeepers flanking him on all sides. They nudge him when he stops at the bottom of the steps to it, and he scrambles to gain control of his body once more.
Standing next to the escort, the urge to punch her only grew. I bet her fucking jewelry alone is worth enough to feed Josie and I for a year. She takes a step away from him, towards the bowl containing the female tribute’s names.
Danny had never been religious, but as she reaches into it and pulls another paper out, he prays to any god that will listen for his sister not to be reaped. Please not Josie, please not Josie, please not Josie. “Our female tribute from District 7 is… Daphne Laurel!”
Danny exhales a deep breath, relief flooding him. Josie was ok, she would be ok. Danny may not have been lucky, but she was safe. This year, at least. As happy as he was that Josie’s name hadn’t been called, his heart breaks as he sees Daphne make her way through the crowd, joining him on stage. She was just a little kid, maybe 12 or 13; and she was terrified, visibly on the verge of tears.
Prompted by the escort, Danny shakes her hand, vowing in that moment that he was going to do whatever he could to keep her safe in the arena, to keep her alive as long as possible.
“Happy Hunger Games, and may the odds ever be in your favor!”

Tottenham Hotspur’s Double winning team pose for a photo together with their trophies, 1961.
Back row, left to right: Bill Brown, Peter Baker, Ron Henry, Danny Blanchflower, Maurice Norman, Dave Mackay.
Front row, left to right: Cliff Jones, John White, Bobby Smith, Les Allen, Terry Dyson.
Bill Brown: Signed in the summer of ‘59. Proper keeper, is talked about in the same breath as keepers like Clemence, Jennings, and Lloris. Steadfast in this side.
Peter Baker: Born in Hampstead, he played for Enfield before coming to Spurs in ‘52. Played one game short of 300 and scored 3 goals as a right back. Got the job done and never let himself get ruffled by any winger; he’d love watching modern fullbacks nowadays.
Ron Henry: Only ever played for Spurs on the senior level, signing in 52. Fast and a good tackler, sound left back. He had a plant nursery and homing pigeons, and he stayed on with Spurs as a coach for the U18s.
Danny Blanchflower: Irresistible, incredible, incomparable. There will never be another like Danny. Signing from Villa in ‘54 and going on to head Northern Ireland, he was the captain of Spurs’ Double winning side and made this great team extraordinary. He had very progressive ideas of how the game should be played, fast and attacking and being allowed to use a ball during training, and was set on the idea that the glory—doing things in style—is what is special about the game. No one like him.
Maurice Norman: Signing in the winter of ‘55, he was an absolute assured and commanding figure at the back. Scored 19 goals over his 400+ appearances for Spurs; should’ve been a mainstay at centre half for England but unfortunately his career was cut short due to a double fracture in his tibia and fibula. Integral to the success of this side.
Dave Mackay: If the word legend had a picture accompanying its definition in the dictionary, surely Mackay’s face would be smiling back up at you. Coming from Hearts in the spring of ‘59, he is still described to this day as possibly the most complete midfield player Scotland has ever produced. He never gave up playing even when the rest of the team believed they had already won. A player who inspired everyone around him, others spoke of him as the ‘hardest man I have ever played against—and certainly the bravest.’ He was known famously as the heartbeat of Bill Nic’s Double winning side. Ange Postecoglou and Son Heungmin would have loved him.
Cliff Jones: Formerly Spurs’ top fifth goalscorer before Sonny overtook him, the Welshman signed for the club in the early spring of ‘58 from Swansea. He was a crucial player in the side who played on both wings, was faster than you could believe, always put a lovely cross in, and scored goals from flying headers. Still has lovely words to say about the club and his grandson, Matt Wells, is currently a first team assistant coach.
John White: Nicknamed ‘The Ghost’ due to his runs to find space off the ball that saw him arrive unexpectedly in the opposition’s penalty box, he was one of the most skilful players to ever don the shirt. Signed in the autumn of ‘59. His name bleeds into Spurs folklore as he was being primed to be the next Blanchflower but tragically passed away prematurely when struck by lightning while playing golf in ‘64. His teammates say about him: ‘While other players were someone you would have to bring into a game, John would bring himself into the game.’
Bobby Smith: For the days of centre forwards like him! Currently Spurs’ third top goalscorer, he joined from Chelsea in the winter of ‘55, clearly having recognised which the superior London club was. Twelve hat tricks over his career with Spurs, he was big and bustling and scored goals like nobody’s business. He scored 33 goals in 43 games in the Double-winning season—not too shabby.
Les Allen: Joining the club in the winter of ‘59, he immediately struck up a brilliant and lethal striking partnership with Smith, scoring 27 goals that Double-winning season. While living in Smith’s shadow a little and struggling to retain his place in the starting XI with the arrival of Jimmy Greaves, he was still an essential part of this side’s success. His son Clive Allen and his nephew Paul Allen both went on to play for Spurs.
Terry Dyson: A player who would nowadays be dismissed by talent scouts due to his height and is often not remembered in this side, but was the catalyst to Spurs’ success that season. He signed for the club in ‘55. A snappy winger who could put in a good cross, he is the only Spurs player to score a hat trick in the North London Derby to date. You can still find him trawling around academy matches.

July Comics Round Up
Trying something new where I actually record this as I read and not all at once at the end of the month.
Hawk & Dove (14-28) (1990-1991)
V v good!! I love Dove she's my baby girl, and by the end of it Hawk was even starting to grow in me like a fungus. Also, thank gawd they stuck to their guns and never did a romance between Hawk and Dove, I really liked their love interests. (Also Babs shows up!!! Love love love) this finished up this run, it was pretty short. 100% recommended reading, especially if you are interested in the lords of chaos/order dynamics.
Doctor Fate (14-31) (1990-1991)
One thing I can say about DeMatteis's run is that despite all the weird "xtianity is the true religion" overtones, the insistence that the center of the universe, the greatest power behind everything, is pure unending joyful compassionate LOVE really gets to me. Could do without the overwhelming unsubtle proselytizing tho. Messner-Loebs follow-up is sooooo good tho holy shit, love love love the social commentary going on.
Starman (20-37) (1990-1991)
Will is such a good boy but he can be so dumb sometimes. Watching him learn and grow is very fun! This run strikes a good balance of drama humor and sincerity.
Doom Patrol (30-44) (1990-1991)
Excellent storytelling, and i got to meet Danny the Street!! Morrisons run is practically crossing itself over with the magnus archives they fit so well together. A little out of step with the rest of dc's mythology but that's sort of the point of it <3
Hellblazer (27-45) (1990-1991)
Most of 1990 I was thinking that John is really not doing a lot of magic stuff, just getting into wierd situations then 91 hit and bam, lung cancer soul selling arc! It was exciting to read after seeing it mentioned in so many places.
Swamp Thing (91-109) (1990-1991)
Okay Wheeler has me feeling all sorts of ways. Obviously his whole deal with planetary afterlifes has me going insane, but also he is so so wierd about christianity like his whole set up of the eden situation with angels that consult god, its all so awkward with established Swamp Thing mythos. Also, the Grey has been introduced and posites that fungus and decay are extraterrestrial life imposed on earth and I sort of hate it. Back in Moore's run, towards the beginning, all discussion of decay was as a part of ecosystems which is true! Having decay be an imposed malicious force is sooooooo dumb I hate it. Wheeler can tell a story but all his subject matter is sus as hell.
The Demon (1-16) (1990-1991)
Does not further my blood/etrigan agenda as much as I would like, but it is pretty fun. Also Klarion and Lobo showed up which was exciting
Batman (443-469) (1990-1991)
It's timbo's time to shine! They really are shilling hard for this kid, but I love him so its okay.
Detective Comics (612-637) (1990-1991)
Frustrating that Jason's name is anathema until tim shows up and then it's all victim blame-y bullshit to make tim look better.
Robin (1-5) (1991)
This is one of the first dc comics I read! So it was very exciting to come back to it with a better understanding of everything going on, especially more Shiva background. Also, new version of Ace the bathound showed up!
Legends of the Dark Knight (1-20) (1989-1991)
Some good stories but I am so tired of the clumsy mystic noble savage trope that these authors love to pull when they involve indigenous folk. Also, the more stories that happen that take up months the funnier i think it is that all of these have to be happening in the first the years of Bruce's career because Dick isn't there yet.
New Titans (65-80) (1990-1991)
Jumped back into the town just in time for my last favorite arc, Wildebeest Jericho, doing my precious baby boy wrong on every possible level. Good slade content yeah, but at what cost? And it gets all mucked up with the Armageddon 2001 event in a way that is just messy storytelling.
The Flash (34-54) (1990-1991)
Wally is my dumb little guy and he is living and learning and trying his best. I'm so glad that he has a full pit crew for his high powered racehorse disposition. Also he got a dog named mercury! So far this run has been a good mix of funny and sincere, action and drama. Deffo recommend.
Suicide Squad (37-57) (1990-1991)
Amanda Waller is really peak boss in these issues. She's softened up in some ways and gotten sharper in others. Very fun to see the squad do the freelance thing. And also BABS IS HERE!! (Oops I mean 'amy') I love her ahhhh
Captain Atom (37-57) (1990-1991)
Finished this one up, all in all it's a good run. Nathan is an interesting hero and there's a lot of themes about truth vs lies and the shitty nature of the us military, but also there are some very funny silly moments. Recommended!
Animal Man (23-40) (1990-1991)
Holy shit Morrison's run was so gooood, 4th wall breaking meta level shit I'm very into it. A very wierd follow-up after that, but it involved Animal Man positing multiverse theory that spit in the face of ordained dc canon (but aligns with my thoughts on the subject hell yeah) But yeah, Buddy is going thru the wars in this.
Green Arrow (29-50) (1990-1991)
They are really leaning into this whole "Ollie kills people now" thing. Also, Dinah continues to be a footnote in service to Ollie's story and I hope she leaves him soon. They aren't bad stories but I think Grell leans too hard into the 'Dark and Gritty.'
The Question (34-36) (1990)/Question Quarterly (1-5) (1990-1992)
If I had realized there were only three issues left on the og I would have just finished it up last time! Proud of Vic for leaving Hub City, truly the worst city in America. Conversely, also proud of Myra for staying and trying to fix things. As far as quarterly goes, I can't believe what they did to Jackie holy hell. Honestly, as far as the whole series goes, the downward spiral of Hub City is so extreme that it really is just a reflection of how everything is getting more uneccessarily dark and gritty on a meta level.
Action Comics (252-285) (1959-1962)
And I am officially back in the silver age!! I started 'Tec/Batman when Batgirl showed up so I figured I'd start Action/Superman when Supergirl showed up! Tbh silver age doesn't really do it for me, so I am skimming these just a bit sometimes, but it really is fun to see just how wacky things could get back then! Also, Clark is wayyy too mean to Kara!! She's always crying wanting to be adopted and have a loving family and he's like! Too bad! Be my secret weapon! Also, these comics have such a messed up idea of adoption and kids having to prove that they're worthy of being loved and the adults shopping around. Is that just what things were like?? Anyway in 285 she's revealed to the world! She has a loving family with the Danvers! It's everything I wanted!!
Superman (130-150) (1959-1962)
Started this at a point to be contemporary with AC. Silver age Clark is certainly a guy, I'm collecting panels of him eating weird things. Also, 60s Lois is the gal of all time absolutely. I sorta can't wait until socials mores move away from "women must want to be married, immediately." Also this current continuity has the Kent's having died before Clark moved to Metropolis, which is sorta wild.
Adventure Comics (247-280) (1958-1961)
The Superboy stuff is honestly really silly when you think of all this shit happening while Clark is a very narrow age range, but also they keep referring to things that happened in previous comics as happening a few years ago in universe. Time isn't real baybee! Anyway I started here because it was the first issue with the Legion! I didn't realize that I was getting Green Arrow and Aquaman backups until I started so that was a fun bonus, especially getting to read Garth's first appearance! Honestly I love that in this time period Arthur is sorta just a homeless loser who has nothing to do with Atlantis but is calling himself the king of the sea anyway.
Superman's Pal, Jimmy Olsen (40-58) (1959-1962)
Jimmy is the sokka of the group sorry I don't make the rules I just say the cursed truth.
Superman's Girl Friend, Lois Lane (1-28) (1958-1961)
This comic truly is gaslight gaslight girlboss. Aka 66% is Clark gaslighting Lois about superman and the other 34% is Lois being a v 50s/60s girlboss, I love her so much, but oh my gawd this time period goes hard on MARRIAGE. I will be honest the gender essentialism in this does get very annoying. Its in all of the comics but is most focused in this one because it's about Human-Woman Lois Lane.
World's Finest Comics (100-123) (1959-1962)
For the most part I'm not that into these because there's not much actual character interaction, its all just new fight with a new gimmick. This is especially obvious in the Green Arrow backups where they only have 6 pages and it's all to showcase the newest arrow. Didn't read any of the Tommy Tomorrow backups sorry my dude i do not know u i do not care.
Green Lantern (1-10) (1960-1962) + Showcase (22-24) (1959)
This is a lot of fun! I think I like silver age comics like GL and Flash better than batman or superman because they are new characters with no status quo to uphold. Hal can do a lot with his ring, like transmuting matter, that I'm pretty sure can't be done these days, which will be neat to watch develop.
Justice League of America (1-8) (1960-1962) + Brave and the Bold (28-30) (1960)
Fine!! I caved!! I let my terrible completionist nature get the better of me and I'm gonna read the first 75 of these that I skipped last time. Its sorta wild tho, because reading the solos of this time period you'd think that nobody is sharing the same world except superman and batman, and aquaman sometimes, but then there they are on the justice league! (No seriously, superman has been to at least two separate "mysterious Amazon islands" that have nothing to do with paradise island. And he's never made mention of knowing an amazon.)
So my recording as I go experiment has worked, which is honestly a really good thing because I would be really hard pressed to review the stuff from before my time jump right now, oops.

Meta for Face to Face Chapter 54
First off, thank to anyone who read this chapter and this long post. This chapter was one of the most self indulgant things I have ever written. XD So many concert memories went into it. I'll talk about some of them below. There are also links to the songs "performed in the chapter" as well as some videos of each band performing live. As I told my sister after I wrote the scenes at the beginning when the trio met Josh and Travis, writing dialogue for the real people felt like playing with dolls, but in the worst, most embarrassing possible way. (Don't worry, I actually got permission from everyone featured, but more about that at the end). So I watched a lot of videos and tried my best to make everything accurate and use actual quotes when I could.
Chaotic Resemblance- Travis and the rest of the guys are from Oklahoma if that helps with imagining his accent. It's not particularly unique but when I was writing him this chapter and trying to remember how he speaks, that twang is what my brain kept remembering. Travis and all the guys are super nice, awesome to talk to. And on the short list of irl people who know about my fic writing.
Two songs are mentioned in the chapter. First- "Virtual Reality"
youtube
And Second- "Riot Anthem". Live video here. The band played this song the first time I saw them and I remember that set vividly for how much fun this song was. It definitely pushed me to run back to the merch table and buy a cd.
youtube
Relent- The first song mentioned is "Ghost," of the famed T shirt which I have Danny buy and which I bought irl. XD
youtube
"Heavy" - (Video of this song at Uprise 2022). The words I have Miggy say before the song are based on his commentary on the lyric book for their album. "Rape. Sexual Manipulation. Sex Trafficking. The devasting emotions that come with it. This song is my wife’s story, and I'm honored to tell it. She’s been through so much. She has come out victorious, and now her story will help millions, breaking the silence around topics not talked about enough." Admittedly, much heavier (no pun intended) than the blurb in the fic. But when applying the song to Danny and his story, I needed to make some changes.
I have Heavy be a emotionally significant song for Danny in this chapter. When I was thinking about his reaction to each band and songs I wanted to feature, I realized that it made sense for that song to be the token "song you cry to". It just made sense, having previously said that he listened to the album a bunch of times and having him list Heavy as a favorite, that that song would have had an emotional impact. I really wish I had thought to put that fact in the text before now so that little character moment doesn't feel like it come from nowhere. But what are you gonna do? 🤷♀️
(A bit of religious discussion below)
Also, I have Danny talk to the band a little bit about what the song meant to him, something I've done and seen done with many bands before. The band offers to pray with him and though that has never happened personally with me with Relent (of the 4 bands here, they are actually the one I have seen the fewest times and know the least), I have had other Christian musicianaries (musicians who view their touring and performing as a ministry) offer to pray with me and I have accepted that offer. Not including that moment would have been a disservice, considering how much I love all these groups and respect what they stand for. But I decided to cut away from the actual scene to give a sense of privacy. It felt right for something often so tender.
youtube
And the last song, played when Danny first spots Johnny- "Last Days"
youtube
GFM- Cries in GFM broken up. 😭 Seriously though, this band consisted of three sisters, who went they started we all teens. I realized after writing the chapter that for the time I am imaging for the story (just before they disbanded last year), calling the oldest two teens would be inaccurate; CJ and Maggie are both in their early twenties. But I decided to keep it since them all being teens would make the group cooler in the Phantom trio's eyes. And I should mention, they're not entirely out of the scene though; the basest and screamer, Maggie, still tours and makes music under her name, Magdalene Rose.
As for the songs featured- The one during sound check is "Give me a Sign"
youtube
S.M.I.L.E- (Live video) The song where Jack gets in the circle pit. XD Inspired by my dad getting in circle pit at metal shows. He's 53 now and broke his leg last year, messing up his knee pretty badly, so his moshing days are over. But as recently as Warped tour 2017, he was still doing it. I'm over here too clumsy and short to even think about it; just head banging is good enough for me, thanks. 🤣
youtube
And the last song- "I don't need your fantasy" A Sam Manson song if I've ever heard one. Also, this is the song with the famed cupcakes. (Sadly, I couldn't find a video of this on YouTube to demo 😥) I really wanted to write about the ridiculous fanatical joy that comes with having icing and cake thrown at you during a metal show. 🤣 Words can't really capture the experience but I tried.
youtube
The Protest- In the chapter, the trio meets Josh at the merch tables before the show. This is very reminiscent of when I met him actually. This was in 2016. My sister and I drove about 2 hrs for the show; they were playing with another band we knew of and we'd heard a few songs by The Protest on a local radio station. We arrived super early and went to the door of the tiny church they were playing in to beg to use the restroom before the doors opened. Josh came right up to us before we even got to the restroom. He introduced himself as Josh, asked our names, shook our hands, and said he was excited we were here tonight. And the whole time, I was thinking about needing to use toilet and didn't even realize who he was until the show started. XD The band was significantly less popular then but I know from going to a dozen plus shows since then, he (and the rest of the guys in the band) are like that with everyone. So I am being absolutly serious in the chapter; Josh Bramlett is one of the kindest, most genuine people I know.
The first song is "Paper Tiger." The sound goes out because of Shadow, during this song and the guitarist stales for time. His name is Adam, nickname Sarge, but I couldn't figure out how to put that in the text. The joke that he tells in the one his real life counterpart suggested when I asked him in March. I also based rest of the what he said during technical malfunctions (the joke about being voted out of the band) during their set when I saw them last October with Disciple.
The next song- "Welcome to the Freakshow" This is my favorite song of theirs to hear live. It's so much fun to head-bang/dance to! Also, Maddie films her son instead of the band, as my mom likes to do to me and my sister. 😝
youtube
This message in between the songs- This is word for word part of what Josh said during their set at Kingdom Come Festival 2022; I looked up the video (Message starts at 31:40) and recorded what he said word-for-word to be accurate to Josh and the guy's conviction and the heart behind what they do. It was really important to me that I was authentic there, since I love these guys and what they stand for so much.
And the last song- "Valor." When I was trying to pick which song to end on, I wanted a very specific feeling. I told my sister I was trying to describe that rare moment when you're singing your heart out and you met someone else's eyes and they're singing the same words with the same passion. There's a moment of connection and you know you both believe every single word. I asked what Protest song it should be and she said "Valor." So I went with it.
youtube
Guardians of the Children- From their website.
Guardians of the Children is a nonprofit 501(c)3 organization comprised of motorcycle enthusiasts that use motorcycles as tools to help children who have overcome child abuse, ages 0-17, become strong, confident, and courageous again. Once a child has made an outcry of abuse and the criteria for our support is met, that child is “adopted” into our family as a Little Guardian. Members of G.O.C will escort the child to court, attend school and social events at the child’s request, provide protection and support, and sponsor “Little Guardian” private events, yearly. The goal of these events is to provide a safe space where the Little Guardians can have fun, socialize with others that have experienced similar trauma, and forget for a moment about the fear, doubt, and insecurity that was forced upon them at such a young age. Every child has all the power and strength within themselves, just like a motorcycle on the open road, and the biker behind it, we just encourage them to unleash it as we fight their demons together.
A few years I went to a show they hosted at a local park, featuring GFM and Chaotic Resemblance, hence the similarities to the concert here.
Gotta Rock ‘em all Tour - This is the name of the tour The Protest hosted in March this year, thought the line up was different from the one imagined here (In real life, Behold the Beloved, Relentless Flood, and The Protest). I was lucky enough to see them on this tour. And got to tell the guys about this chapter. 😳😅😊 Honestly, it was one of the most embarrassing thing's I've ever done but in good conscious, I couldn't not say anything, especially since I have talked to Josh about my writing before.
(Religious discussion to follow)
Their song "Greater" had been really important for me, to remind me about why I do what I do. And at KCF last year, I talked with him about that song and our shared conviction for a little bit. From the song:
"I don't do it for the money Don't do it for the fame As long as someone listens, I don't care who knows my name I don't do it for the glory Don't do it for the game I do it all to make them see this is all for something greater than me"
My goal isn't to write for the comments, hits, or bookmarks. Not being well known in the fandom or well liked by people. I write for a greater purse. And this greater thing is Jesus Christ and his kingdom. I love Jesus for who He is and what He's done for me, in and through me (and that is a whole long, complex story there). But a small part: I fervently believe writing these stories is one of the reasons God put me here and gave me the interests I do (yes, including DP) and the talent in writing I have. From the messages I sent to The Protest and the other bands in this chapter, asking if they wanted to take a look at the chapter.
"I write this story for fun and post because I love the characters and the community of other people who do too. But I also see it as a mission field, as a way to write about God's love and grace and show it to people who otherwise wouldn't hear. This chapter is also a love letter to the Christian Rock community as a whole. I love you guys, your music, and the community a lot. The Protest, other bands, and fellow fans have had a huge impact on my life: encouraging me, inspiring me, reminding me of Jesus's love and strengthening my conviction to serve Him. The Protest inspires me to write, ministering in the way I know I've been called."
The point is: I put a lot of heart into this story and all my others. I pray that God will guide my words and be glorified in them. I pray that the people who need to read them will, and they will be encouraged, strengthened and inspired. And most importantly- that God will speak to them, not me. That they will, that you will, see just a hint of His love and grace in what I write and in how I interact with people in this community. I pray that lives will be changed, even in small ways. That seeds will be planted, even if I never see them grow.
I love all of you.

I got to watched Indiana Jones 5 tonight! It was a such a great movie. A well thought conclusion to the life of Indy. I couldn't have imagined a better ending for him and his found family, they finally get their peace after years of high and adventurous life full of dangers and encounters with scheming individuals. It's what's deserved for them<3
The movie reminded me of the situation my Hogwarts Legacy MC, Danny is in after his retirement from teaching Defense Against the Dark Arts following Grindelwald's defeat in 1945. Although he loses quite a few of his dear longtime friends in the years after the war, he witnesses the lives of their descendants unfold. Danny lives for 54 more years until he peacefully passes away in the summer of 1999.

Road Trip — VoicePlay music video
youtube
The life of touring musicians can be stressful. Like anyone else in the midst of a long drive in a cramped vehicle, they can get on each other's nerves and argue over what music to play. With this dramatic comedic reenactment, VoicePlay gives their audience a peek inside the tour van. After years of performing this medley / theatrical sketch, they finally got a chance to record a professional video in a live setting during the 2014 Sing-Off tour.
Details:
title: Road Trip
original songs / performers: [1:30] "Tiptoe Through the Tulips" by Tiny Tim; [1:50] "Orinoco Flow" by Enya; [2:05] "Cum On Feel the Noize" by Quiet Riot; [3:12] "Big Shot" by Billy Joel; [3:24] "I Wanna Rock" by Twisted Sister; [3:33] "Voices Carry" by ’Til Tuesday; [3:50] "Shout" by Tears For Fears; [4:06] "Why Can't We Be Friends?" by War; [4:15] "That Smell" by Lynyrd Skynyrd; [5:10] "Hard to Say I'm Sorry" by Chicago; [6:34] "We Just Disagree" by Dave Mason; [6:54] "Royals" by Lorde
written by: "Tiptoe Through the Tulips" by Al Dubin & Joe Burke; "Orinoco Flow" by Eithne "Enya" Pádraigín Ní Bhraonáin & Roma Ryan; "Cum On Feel the Noize" by Noddy Holder & Jim Lea; "Big Shot" by Billy Joel; "I Wanna Rock" by Dee Snider; "Voices Carry" by Robert Holmes, Aimee Mann, Michael Hausman, & Joey Pesce; "Shout" by Roland Orzabal & Ian Stanley; "Why Can't We Be Friends?" by Papa Dee Allen, Harold Ray Brown, B.B. Dickerson, Lonnie Jordan, Charles Miller, Lee Oskar, Howard E. Scott, & Jerry Goldstein; "That Smell" by Allen Collins & Ronnie Van Zant; "Hard to Say I'm Sorry" by Peter Cetera & David Foster; "Royals" by Ella "Lorde" Yelich-O'Connor & Joel Little
arranged by: Geoff Castellucci
release date: 22 May 2014
My favorite bits:
Layne's deliberately-obnoxious-sibling energy when he re-locks the door the second time.
five grown men making vroom-vroom noises and other sound effects as part of their job
Tony singing ♫ "Why? Why? Why?" ♫ in annoyance instead of ♫ "wild, wild, wild" ♫, and his smug smile at cutting off Eli's accompaniment
Eli excitedly throwing the horns only to be met with Tony's completely unenthusiastic "rawk". 😒
Geoff's growl note as Eli's "shout"ing wakes him up
Eli watch the rooOAAAD!!!
professional singers using their talents to set up and deliver an elaborate fart joke (I am completely serious. It's magnificent.)
Earl's adorable muppet snoring 💤 , and his bashful expression as he apologizes
Tony wiping the pretend aerosol spray off his face (whatever it may be… air freshener? hairspray? breath freshener? floor wax? dessert topping?)
the pitch pipe / seat belt alarm gag — such a clever way to reset after the evacuation interlude
and, of course, Layne's incredible solo
Trivia:
Layne sometimes changes the song he busts out at the end in an attempt to make the other guys laugh and break character. I've found audience recordings where he goes with "Baby" by Justin Bieber, "Hello" by Adele, and "Let It Go" from Frozen.
VoicePlay have been performing and refining this medley / skit since their 4:2:Five days. The earliest full version I've found is from 2010, with Ryan and Danny in the front seats, but an even earlier clip appeared in their 2009 promo video.
They did make an in-studio version with a real car in 2013. It's currently only available through their Patreon.

Check out this list of series and documentaries to enjoy this weekend in honor of Black Music Month.
Amazon Prime
Dreamgirls (2006) Beyoncé also starred in the dazzling adaption of the Broadway musical about a 1960s girl group. She played Deena and Jennifer Hudson played Effie White, the latter for which Hudson won an Oscar for Best Supporting Actress. The film also starred Jamie Foxx, Eddie Murphy, Loretta Devine, Danny Glover, and Anika Noni Rose as the group’s third member, Lorrell. The film details their development as artists and singers.
Respect (2021) In this autobiographical film, Hudson played the lead as the legendary Aretha Franklin. The movie documents her adolescent years singing in her father’s church choir to her rise to international fame. Marlon Wayans plays Franklin’s ex-husband and former manager, Ted White, and Mary J. Blige portrays vocalist Dinah Washington.
Ray (2004) Embattled actor Jamie Foxx portrays the life story and career of legendary R&B and blues musician Ray Charles. The biographical musical follows his impoverished beginnings in the South to touring under Jim Crow laws as a successful artist. He goes on to get married and have children, but his addiction to heroin never strayed too far away. After a series of arrests and a rehab stint, Charles regained his strength to make a brave comeback and enjoy decades of music success.
School Daze (1988) Spike Lee wrote and directed the musical comedy starring Laurence Fishburne, Tisha Campbell, Samuel L. Jackson, Jasmine Guy, and many others. The Morehouse graduate explored the socio-political and economic issues surrounding students at historically black colleges and universities.
The Fighting Temptations (2003) Beyoncé and Cuba Gooding Jr. star in this musical comedy about an ad executive who loses his job and leaves the Big Apple. He heads to Georgia to collect his aunt’s inheritance, where he leads a gospel choir to victory in a citywide competition. Other supporting cast members include LaTanya Richardson, Mike Epps, Chloe Bailey, Steve Harvey, Melba Moore, Shirley Caesar, Ann Nesby and Angie Stone.
Apple TV
Carmen: A Hip Hopera (2001) An oldie but goodie is this musical drama starring Beyoncé, Mekhi Phifer, Mos Def, Bow Wow, Erykah Badu, Wyclef Jean, Da Brat, Jermaine Dupri, Fred Williamson, and more. A beautiful woman with a hypnotizing face and body can have any man she wants. She chooses a cop who loses his job after spending one night with her. They both end up on the run from the police, but the biggest dreamer doesn’t make it out alive.
Purple Rain (1984) Minneapolis native Prince plays a young artist with an abusive at-home living situation. The club singer creates a band to compete with a rival singer and explore new love. The film’s name is the same as the late singer’s sixth studio album.
The Wiz (1978) The beloved feature film includes an all-Black cast, compared to its original 1993 film starring Judy Garland in the lead role of Dorothy. In the musical drama, Diana Ross plays Dorothy, Michael Jackson plays the Scarecrow, Richard Pryor as the Wiz, Nipsey Russell as the Tin Man, and Ted Ross as the Cowardly Lion. They work together to get to overcome obstacles and meet their destinies at the end of the yellow brick road.
Tina Turner What’s Love Got to Do With It (1993) Two months before her passing, Tina Turner praised Angela Bassett’s portrayal of her in the biopic. It was based on Turner’s 1986 autobiography, “I, Tina: My Life Story,” and depicted her years of abuse during her marriage to her then-husband Ike Turner, played by Fishburne. Despite being the actress being snubbed an Oscar for her role, Turner said she felt “honored” by Bassett’s portrayal in the film.
BET+
The New Edition Story (2017) The three-part miniseries about the legendary R&B group begins with five childhood friends who become international sensations while growing up in Boston. As they quickly emerge into the spotlight, various obstacles strain their finances, friendship, and future. The film led to “The Bobby Brown Story.”
Disney Plus
Black Nativity (2013) Forest Whitaker, Angela Bassett, Tyrese, Jack Latimore, Jennifer Hudson, and more shocked fans with their vocals in their musical adaption of Langston Hughes’ 1961 play. In the all-Black cast film, a teen from Baltimore moves in with his estranged grandparents. Unhappy with their strict rules, he goes out into the street to find his own way.
Let It Shine (2012) This film’s cast includes a few veteran actors and a bevy of actors who are being given flowers. “Abottt Elementary” star Tyler James Williams plays Cyrus, a teenage rapper looking to impress Roxie, played by “ICU” singer and ‘Bel-Air” actress Coco Jones. He battles his nemesis under an alias and wins with a rhyme about his lady. Sadly, he gets no credit for it but ultimately wins Roxie’s heart.
HBO Max
Straight Outta Compton (2015) Based on a true story about the rap group N.W.A., “Straight Outta Compton” sees six men in Compton, Los Angeles, who pushed the boundaries and revolutionized hip-hop culture with gritty rap lyrics and their dealings with Suge Knight. O’Shea Jackson Jr. stars as the younger version of his father Ice Cube in the biographical drama, alongside Corey Hawkins, Jason Mitchell, Neil Brown Jr., Aldis Hodge, and Brandon Lafourch to make up the famed group.
Hulu
Cadillac Records (2008) Cedric the Entertainer plays music artist Willie Dixon and is the narrator of the rock ’n’ roll film full of great acting and great music. It details the rise and fall of Chess Records, the Chicago blues label owned by a Polish immigrant played by Adrien Broady’s character Leonard Chess. He launched the careers of late great musicians such as Muddy Waters, Chuck Berry, and Etta James, the latter of whom was portrayed by Beyoncé.
Chasing Trane: The John Coltrane Documentary (2016) This passionate story tells the portrait of an unconventional jazz musician whose music refined music and continues to impact, influence, and transform other people’s lives. It features more interviews and little anecdotes about his life with narration from Denzel Washington.
Summer Of Soul (2021) Questlove made his filmmaking debut after premiering this movie at the Sundance Film Festival. The music documentary features six weeks of footage taken in the summer of 1969 in the aftermath of Black Creativity and the civil rights movement. The classic concert film looks back at a group of blues, gospel, and rock ‘n’ soul artists who performed at the Harlem Cultural Festival at Mount Morris Park. It includes performances from Nina Simone, Stevie Wonder, B.B. King, Mavis Staples, Sly & The Family Stone, and more.
Netflix
Get On Up (2014) Actor Chadwick Boseman portrayed the legendary James Brown in the biopic that explores Brown’s life, music, and presence on stages worldwide. It follows the music legend’s journey from humble beginnings to becoming of the most influential artists of the civil rights movement.
Ma Rainey’s Black Bottom (2020) This marks Boseman’s last movie before his unexpected passing. The new adaptation of August Wilson’s play tackles hard issues like race, art, and the exploitation of black artists in the 1920s. Viola Davis gave viewers a riveting performance as Ma Rainey, who never failed to hold back when she wasn’t satisfied with a song. Most of the film is recorded in a studio as she prepares to record new music for an album while clashing with white producers.
Sparkle (2012) Jordin Sparks made her feature film debut in this remake of the original 1976 film alongside industry vets like Derek Luke, Mike Epps, and the late singer Whitney Houston. She plays a child prodigy who sings in a group with her two sisters. Set in 1968, Detroit, the musical trio have hopes of signing a record, which seems far in the future due to one sister’s drug habit and Houston’s role as an over-protective mother. The “I Wanna Dance With Somebody” singer died in February 2012, months before the film was released in theaters. The original “Sparkle,” starring Lonette McKee and Irene Cara — also is available to stream, on Amazon Prime.
The Get Down (2016) The hip-hop-themed drama is set in the South Bronx, known as the birthplace of hip-hop and has been since the 1970s. It follows a small crew of teens who dance or create music. Production reportedly spent over $120 million to make the film, making it the most expensive production in Netflix history. Each episode takes a deeper dive into the rise of hip-hop and disco music.
Starz
Annie (2014) The musical starring Jamie Foxx finds Quvenzhané Wallis as the first Black Annie. The orphan unexpectedly meets wealthy businessman Will Stacks, who uses her to help with his mayoral campaign. The funny satire has quiet moments, sad moments, and performances of “Tomorrow” and “Hard-Knock Life.” She eventually moves in with Stacks, and the two build a bond similar to the one depicted between Annie and her benefactor Daddy Warbucks in the 1932 “Little Orphan Annie” classic.
YouTube
The Jacksons: An American Dream (1992) In the film, Lawrence Hilton-Jacobs and Angela Bassett play Joseph and Katherine Jackson, the parents of Michael Jackson and his nine siblings. The five-hour miniseries tells the captivating story of how five Jackson siblings became one of the most iconic boy groups in music history. Their unique sound came out of Gary, Indiana, and took over the music industry for years.
