Headmaster Dumbledore is sure that the ghosts of Hogwarts were hiding something. Heâd be the first to admit that heâs nosy when it came to things like these, but he simply doesnât have the time. Whatever that lingered these halls, heâs sure does not mean Hogwarts any harm. The ghosts would not protect it if it did.
Albus Dumbledore Hummer around a lemon drop as his quill scratched over endless parchment paper.
His wand glowed green for a brief second, an acknowledgement, and settled down into its current ownerâs hold.
ââ
Danny Phantom hadnât thought the castle he found during the summer months in this universe would be⌠so full of life. Not when there were ghosts, floating around like the castle were their own home.
Magic.
They were ghosts made of magic.
His core struggled, at first, to survive. Then, it took the magic and thrived.
He floated, invisible amongst the glittering candles beneath the imitated night sky, and watched students file in.
Quite different, from his own entrance.
He had floated into the tower, having felt a hint of resistance that he knew now were the castle wards. The ghosts, what he thought were ghosts before he realized ectoplasmic ghosts existed, stopped dead. Hah.
The shades dancing and whirling and conversing froze as he entered the tower. Life and death, and the beings that walked the line, stopped at the arrival of the One Who is the Line. The boy king wreathed in black and green glanced around.
âHello. Iâm Phantom.â
âThe High King,â a ghost whispered. âOur king.â
âHeâs an American?â Another one asked, scandalized. Danny, surrounded by those who he recognized as his, cracked the first smile heâs had in a while.
âWho cares? HeâsâŚâ The knight sunk to his knees, bowing with his ghostly sword in front of him.
The ghosts bowed. Danny floated in further. âCan you tell me where I am?â
âOf course.â
ââ
Now⌠heâs watching the children get Sorted. Weird, for a hat to decide your classmates, but whatever.
Harry Potterâs name is called, and the whispers broke out. He doesnât know why, but Danny couldnât ask the ghosts. They barely know the current headmaster, as the dead generally care only for their own times.
Danny decides to visit the lake octopus. Lake squid? Something like that. The mer people beneath the waters liked him, the last time he went. The Sorting is put out of Dannyâs mind. Heâs dead now, too. The only thing he cares about now is to explore the vast halls of Hogwarts and the occasional visit to the kitchen to steal some food for his living body.
(Thank the Ancients he found a house elf who knew what seasoning was.)
(Sometimes, Danny flew to where his home would have been and gets comfort food at the nearest town. He missed it, but he canât go back.)
The ghosts know by now to call for Phantom should they need something (âIâm American,â he joked at the ghost. âWeâre not big on kings. You can just call me Phantom.â)
ââ
The third year heâs there, Danny feels the effects of Clockworkâs power. When he investigates, itâs the red headed girl he once saw leaving the library, paper clutched in her hand.
She helped save one of his subjects, so he owes her. Plus, if sheâs using Clockworkâs powers, this Hermione has potential.
And⌠sheâs using it to study.
She reminds him of Jazz.
ââ
A wave of ice crackled and froze the fleeing rat and the feral wolf man.
âWhat?!â Harry screeched to a stop, eyes wide at the ghost child in front of him.
Danny turned, and landed gently on the ground. Snape snarled at him in suspicion. Danny allowed himself to become living again, black hair and blue eyes and tan skin replacing the white, green, black thing his dead form had.
âWhoâre you?â The red-headed boy, Ron?, asked him through gritted teeth.
Danny smiled at them, dimples appearing. âA friend.â
Before the trio and co. could say anything, Danny whips his head around, palm coming up.
âStop.â He orders. The creeping sense of cold and dread shuttered to a stop. âGo over there,â he said, and the dementors, hovering at the edge of his periphery obeyed. Danny turned back to the mildly terrified and flummoxed group.
âLetâs go. Youâre all going to catch a cold, if you donât move it. Especially you, scrawny and greasy.â He pointed at the godfather and Snape.
ââ
âHey, Danny?â
âWhat, Harry?â
âWhyâd you help us? I mean, you said you didnât want to involve yourself in stuff like that.â
Danny hummed, wisped tail curling up against him as he soaked in the sunâs rays. âBecause you reminded me of myself. And in the end, you died.â
âYou literally brought me back,â Harry deadpanned, remembering the place between life and death, and how the angry Danny was when he stormed onto that train platform. The King had taken him by the scruff of his shirt collar like a particularly incensed mother cat, and dragged him off away from a puzzled Dumbledore.
âYou were being stupid. Youâre too young to die.â
âLike you?â
Danny snorted. âNah. I didnât have a choice.â

Back at it again with my Danny is mom coded auâs, but this time itâs because of Clockwork that he suddenly has a whole ass teenage kid.
Clockwork had been bored or maybe he was playing a game against an opponent, or even lost a bet, whatever it was, he stepped in right as Jason was searching for his biological mother.
The DNA that would have registered itself as one Sheila Haywood, confirming Jasonâs mother, glitched a terrible green across the screens of the batcomputer.
In those few moments of chaos Jasonâs heart beat rapidly as he tried to figure out why the computer wasnât working, wondering if his only chance to find his mom â his blood mom â would never find success.
Then as suddenly as things went wrong the DNA settled and pinged.
Jason watched, his chest tight, as one Danny C. Works, formerly Danny Fenton appeared onto the big screen.
Danny looked a lot like Jason, short cut black hair more straight than the subtle curls of Jasonâs own; deep blue eyes, tired in a way that spoke of long days and nights, but with a warm happiness that made the familiar smile â the one Jason would see on himself every time he looked into the mirror â even more striking.
Jason didnât linger too long on the male identifying gender, nor the fact his mom leaned more towards a masculine name or clothing.
There were plenty of male to female, and female to male leaning individuals that lived in Crime Alley. He had seen it enough to not even bat an eye at it, even now. After all, in Gotham you minded your business least you find yourself in business you canât leave.
On a different monitor information of Danny C. Works piled for Jason to quickly browse through.
Danny was a senior engineer, no intimate relationships, and with no close connections to family outside of the tentative calls from Jasmine Fenton.
Danny was estranged from Jack and Madeline Fenton, a falling out that had occurred just a little before Dannyâs high school graduation. If Jason calculated it correctly that would have been â around the season Jason himself would have been born.
Okay, so no grandparents then but I might have a maybe aunt. Jason scrolled further and stilled.
Twin toddlers: Dante and Danielle Works.
Jason had baby siblings.
He doesnât let the sting of younger siblings consume him, doesnât allow the whispering thoughts of why he had been given up when his younger siblings had been kept and so very obviously loved.
Jason took deep breathes, he didnât have time to linger here. He had a family to get to, and a family he would get to.
It took almost all night to reach, the starlight night sky slowly and surely fading into cloudy wine as the sun rose, but Jason made it.
And when the door opened to his hesitant but firm knock, Jason was unable to speak. His mom â dad, maybe? Did they want to be mom or dad? â stood in the doorway, brows furrowed in confusion.
It was when Danny spoke his vigilante name did Jason only just realize that he was still dressed to the nineâs in his Robin costume.

Prompt 235
âMother, I have made a friend.âÂ
Now donât get him wrong, Danny was delighted at the idea of Jordan making a friend, he really was. But the last three attempts had been borderline kidnappings, so he wasnât entirely sure if he should be. Thankfully it doesnât seem heâs kidnapped this one. Hopefully.Â
Not that he wouldnât be surprised if Dan managed to kidnap a tiny kryptonian, but the kid- Jon apparently- seemed happy enough to be there. Apparently his grandparents lived in the midwest too, and was happy enough to have someone to talk about it.Â
Though um, maybe Danny should have checked to see if his parents knew where heâd gone, because he was not expecting a harried-looking superman to suddenly appear at his window.Â

Sam is Adopted
So! Have you ever noticed how Sam doesn't look like either of her Parents? Her Mom and Dad are Blonde and Ginger, and neither of them have Purple Eyes. How would Sam ever come from either of them?
She tells people that she dyes her Hair and wears Contacts, but the reality is that she was adopted as a baby by them. They had just found out that Pamela was Infertile and they wanted an Heir foe their company, so they decided to Adopt a kid.
But the Adoption Agency didn't have any kids who would realistically look like them, so they just got the first kid they found.
She had been left at the Orphanage by her Mother citing an inability to raise her and an unstable income. She never told the Agency her name, but told them that the baby's name was Sam, named after her Grandfather.
Sam was raised knowing that she was Adopted, but never really put much interest into it. Until one day when she decided that her adoptive Parents support of the Anti Ecto Acts was a step too far for her. She took an Ancestry DNA Test to see if she could find her Bio Mom to get away from them.
The results came back, and she found out that her Mom was a woman from Metropolis named Lois Lane.

Guys I came up with a new DPxDC AU where we get Deaged!Dani(Ellie), Mom!Cass, and Dad!Danny.
"Cass... Are you sure you want to do this?" Tim asked one more time before he would put the last code in. He knew she was sure, more than willing to deal with it but he just needed one more confirmation before they all started what couldn't be stopped.
Cass stared at Tim, her face straight and her eyes firm without a hint of doubt. She nodded in his direction, despite the growing nervousness in her stomach for a second even with Stephanie squeezed her hand in reassurance and support.
Cass turned her gaze to the little girl, no older than thirteen, suspended in a tank full of green glowing goo and asleep. Her vitals showing up on screens near the tank coming from the wires that were hooked up to her inside the tank.
She said her name was Danielle Masters but had also said she wouldn't mind a new name once she was no longer just a clone but instead Cass's new daughter. She had only asked to include her 'dad', a Danny Fenton/Phantom, in her future naming decision too
Cass took a breath and said softly but determined "Save her."
Tim nodded back and entered the final code into the computer.
-x-x-
Basically-
Cass, while in Hong Kong, finds a destabilizing Dani.
Cass see's the desperation and fear Dani is in and helps as best as she can.
She manages to help but they both seem to know the next time this happens will be Dani's last.
Dani is very, very sick at this point and needs help even standing up.
Cass see's and remembers herself at this age and wants to help.
They do become friends and learn each other backstories
Cass goes to the one person she knows who might to be able to help with the destabilizing clone problem.
Tim, Tim is that person. (Because he's friends with Conner, and no doubt knows Conner's DNA and how it works, AND the fact he tried his hand at the whole cloning thing.... Tim told Cass everything once things settled down after his BruceQuest was done)
They fill him in on what is happening and he starts helping, mostly cause Cass asked and because "Clone rights!" (side note, he asked if its okay to tell Conner, when yes, Conner comes over and chats with Dani the entire time whenever he has free time) (the image of Conner sitting at her bedside as they chat is in my head btw)
Tim finds out the reason Dani is destabilizing so badly is because she's not 'complete', she needs a female donor technically because she's female not male (unlike Conner who is stable because he is male with male donors)
They find out that after trying to see of ways to save her that Cass was the closest that could donate her DNA (they also discover there might be a connection between ectoplasm and the Pits, they don't wanna run the risk of asking a LOA member) (If I remember right Cass grew around the Pits for a while and was even tossed in them after a fight with Shiva)
Tim also brings them news that Danielle's body is rapidly destabilizing due to her body/hormones trying to 'mature' her since she is at that age and she has less than a week.
Everyone knows there is no time to think of trying to save her in any other ways.
Tim says that if they do this, they have to technically 'remake' her body to the actual age she is (a couple months old/a few years old? Depends on the writer) and there was a high chance of her not remembering her old self. That the male DNA in her, the one that seemed to be the most is Daniel 'Danny' Fenton's DNA will be considered father DNA and if Cass does this, her's will be the mother DNA. (Vlad's DNA, because he would try to put his own in, would be 'pushed out')
Cass would become Dani's mother.
Both Cass and Dani talk about it.
Cass wants to help her, she had become friends with Dani and loves her like a little sister already but will try to love her as a daughter as well.
Dani wants to live an actual life.
They agree to it.
Tim sets everything up, Conner is helping around/keeping Dani comfortable/happy.
Cass told Steph and Babs whats happening and they're helping/being supportive once they find out everything.
Meanwhile Tim and Babs has Dick, and Damian go to Amity Park to find out whats happening there/bring Danny to her so they can explain what happened to Dani. (Dick and Damian have no clue why just yet but will find out when they get back, but oh boy is Amity a mess between the GIW, ecto-acts, crazy fruitloop mayor/villain ghost, and other stuff)
Cass and Tim tell Jason and he's helping Alfred (who basically already knows) set up a room for the newest arrival. Jason is gonna stick around if to just see Bruce's face when he gets called a 'grandpa' for the first time.
Duke takes this all in stride when told and just goes along with things now because this is life with the Batfam. He also helps with the room and keeping Dani company until the day.
Bruce was on a space mission thus comes home to find a new group of teens with his kids. One (with black hair and violet/purple eyes) is talking about a purple back gorillas with Damian and swapping vegan recipes, another (wearing a red beanie and has glasses) is getting into tech talk with Tim and Babs, a girl with red hair is talking classic books with Jason and giving Duke advice with school and stress, and another boy (one who could pass as one of his own adopted kids) is cracking jokes/puns with Dick, and telling Steph stories about his Rogues(!?).
Bruce isn't ready when Cass comes up behind him, nearly dancing in her spot and hands him something.
He is given a baby/toddler that looks like Cass but had darker hair and bright blue eyes.
He almost faints when Cass signs to him that he's holding his granddaughter, her baby.
He does faint when Cass notices the signs and takes her baby back before he falls over.

I love your writing so much but I'm here with a crack idea just imagine deage Dan is Klarion.
Dan was able to find out who he is outside of Danny then he was able to change his name Klarion Jackson Fenton/Nightingale he is still a little villain boy also now a mom boy.
Ghost King Danny is his mom young justice was so confused when Klarion you're the best gifts get your mom after not talking to him for a while to also begging them to pretend to be his friend . Justice League dark is panicking in the background about the electric being that just shows up.
Danny in full ghost king attire standing there with a plate of cookies ready to meet his son's new friends.
Thanks so much! I am glad you enjoy my writing!
Also thanks because I absolutely love this Idea/Prompt! Sooooo please enjoy this piece inspired by it! Also I haven't consumed a lot of DC material lately so i am basing this all on my memories. In other words.... I went with Tim's little team here.
Hope that's okay and that this won't disappoint.
-------------------
Dan, who was going by Klarion for some years now, had a massive problem. It was the huge kind of problem build on small bubbles of lies that then turned into this one giant bubble that was about to pop just because of one little question asked by his mom when his sister decided to throw him under the bus to deflect from herself and the fact that she was dating a demon. Don't get him wrong he still loves her, but man did he want to strangle Danielle right now.
"So Klarion, Ellie is right. When will I get to meet your friends you told me so much about?"
It was such an innocent question from his mom. And while his moms titles don't scare him, cause at some point in time they could have been his too, the happy dopey smile like nothing was wrong in the dimensions with little expectations directed at him was the scariest thing his mom could ever direct at him when he had asked THAT question.
So now Klarion was in need of a quick solution. When his mom had asked he had mumbled out a quick: "Next week maybe. We won't be busy with hero stuff then." He had started to form a plan. First of all, he needed to remember what all he had told his mom about his new and redeemed life on Earth 43 he had build for himself with the name Klarion Jackson Fenton-Nightingale.
Which fuck. There was a lot he had told his mom just so he wouldn't worry.
Cause now he also remembers that whenever he had gone out to cause some chaos he had made it seem to his mom like he was going out to bond with his new friend or help them with their hero duty. Well, in a way maybe his chaos causing could be seen as bonding. The ghostly kind, that is. And as for helping with the hero duty... he did give them work, something to do with their hero status. Anyway Klarion tried to remember all possible names he had dropped. Shit why did he also mention to his mom that he was working with heroes to make her proud? He should have name dropped some villains instead but nearly all of them were adults. He knew his mom would have frowned if he had only adult friends and no one around his age.
He was pacing his room in their castle. He need a plan, a good one at that. He knows he name dropped Robin, now Red Robin, Superboy and Impulse on a whim once. Superboy more so cause his mom had been interested in the Alien Heros of the Earth of the dimension he was partially living on now. He had mentioned Robin for the joke of knowing that there is a Dinner in an other Dimension with the same name. And because his Grandfather didn't like the Flash-clan which meant his mom didn't like them too much because of their messing with timelines either, he had mentioned being friends with Impulse on pure spite because of a punishment one day and to see their reactions. So he had to get these three on board anyway, and because for the heck of it he would get Wonder Girl involved too. It was never bad to have a girl in a friends group.
Klarion stopped his pacing. Turning towards his demonic ghost cat companion, kind of what Cujo was to his mom now. "Teekl, I think I have a plan. I will convince these Idiots, that shouldn't be a huge problem. Most of them are normale little flesh sacks." Teekl and him stared for some time at each other and after a moment Klarion huffed turning away with crossed arms. "It's a good plan don't be so sceptical, they are heroes right? They will not refuse my request!"
Well maybe Klarion should have planned this a bit better.
The next day Red Robin blinked at the witch boy up from the ground in the living room of what looked like to be an normal apartment. He had just been in Gotham, working on a case and now he was here? Looking to the left he also noticed that Superboy (the older), Impulse and Wonder Girl were also with him. They all looked stunned he observed and partially disoriented. Additionally they hadn't heard from Klarion since the last time they had foiled his plans on raging chaos upon the earth, that had been weeks ago.
"Kla-"
"I have summoned you heroes here. For the moment it is fruitless to try to leave because of the magic barrier." Okay rude to be cut of but that explained why he suddenly wasn't where he remembered to be last anymore. It was now Superboy who opened his mouth first but before he could even make a sound Klarion decided to speak over them again. "I have presents."
Four young heroes collectively blinked, confused, stunned and weirded out. As the which boy before them waved over to wards a table filled with boxes and packages. "I come in peace today, to proof that I brought these are presents, filled with various goods from different dimensions that should be to the liking of you all. Technologie, accessories, snacks, weapons, as well as clothing styles."
Red Robin shared a glance with his friends, a silent communication but before he once again could say anything Impulse was already by the table going through the stuff. They could here his 'oh's and 'ah's, which inevitably made them curious and they wandered over too. Klarion was not acting hostile at all yet but Red Robin did not trust that so he kept the which boy in clear view the entire time.
"Rob! You gotta see this! That actual futuristic Tech!"
"Look at these snacks."
"These accessories don't look to bad..."
His eye twitched when he noticed Klarion was sporting a smug look. Red Robin had to ask now, because this was not normal for the other. "Okay usually you would have started some big shot chaos plan by now. I don't buy this peace offering act and your way to formal talking. So what is going on?"
The other three, thankfully in Red Robins opinion, finally looked away from the tempting gifts and also turned their attention fully on Klarion. Who's smug smile falter as he let out a sigh and stared at them with what they could only describe as a frustrated look.
"My mom is planning to visit me."
"And?" Impulse asked between munching on three different bags of chips that where on the table.
"And he believes I am friends with you idiots."
They stared slack jawed. Impulse was pinching himself like he couldn't believe what they had just heard. Did one of their Villains, just informed them that their mom believes they were friends? Red Robin was starting to think he might be in a sleep deprived Hallucination.
"Why would she?" Wonder Girl questioned next to which Klarion glared at her with fire in his eyes.
"First of, my mom uses the pronouns he/Him. Be rude to my mom and I will find a way to make your life a permanent hell on earth." Wonder Girl blinked lifting her hands as in a sign of peace. "Second, my mom is under the believe that i work with heroes not against them. I do not have the heart to disappoint him after everything that happened in the past. So I embellished the truth a little."
"A little?" Superboy retorted sarcastically, to which they caught a light blush dusting the which boy's cheeks.
"Look my sister threw me under the bus and my mom wants to meet my friends now! So I need you idiots to play nice with me for when he visits!"
"And we will do that because?" Red Robin crossed his arms, watching their villain sceptically still not really buying this entire act. This was to strange of an behaviour change. Something was up, and he was going to get behind it.
Klarion on the other hand was starting to panic internally. His plan was not as he had hoped. The presents he had specifically gotten from other dimensions with what he believed was their interests did not work to make them simply accept his request. This was the last time he would listen to old man Vlad on how to bribe humans, he wasted his entire week on getting all that stuff. His mom was going to show up soon enough he need to have them act as his friends by then so he could remove the magic barrier. Or else his mom would notices he faked everything.
They left him no choice. He would have to throw his pride away for the sole reason to not disappoint his mom.
All four Young Justice Heroes blinked as Klarion suddenly threw himself on the ground before them into a pleading position.
"Please! I beg you, just for the time my mom is here. Please act like my friends!"
"I didn't think Klarion was a mama's boy...." Impulse whispered to the rest of them in pure disbelief as they stared stunned at the kneeling witch boy.
Cut to the heroes that noticed their teens were missing.....
"Where is he?" Batman growled at the Constantine who was sighing tiredly.
"Look mate, the way you and the other Spandex wearing friends explained it, made it sound like they got summoned by a being of the Infinit Realms." The blond man sighed lighting another cigarette eying the four heroes, Batman, Superman, Wonder Woman and Flash. Zatanna was behind him pouring over a book about the realms and trying to find a tracking spell to trace it back and to where they could have been summoned.
"Don't you have something like a tracker on your boy?" Batman only growled something under his breath to which the Brite couldn't help to arch and eyebrow. Constantine was going to say something sarcasting as Deadman suddenly appeared a panicked look on him. "The Ghost King has chosen to come to our dimension."
"Say bloody what now?" All attention that had been on the heroes and their problem of missing teenage heroes turned now to Deadman and the news he brought with him. "The ghost, shades and spirits talked, for the king has decided to visit our Dimension. They are in an uproar, no one knows of why our King is on his way."
"Bloody fucking hell!" Constantine cursed. "We are fucking screwed! Isn't that guy a fucking tyrannical eldrich war maniac?!"
Deadman nodded solemnly and Constantine uttered another hearty and colourful 'fuck'. While the heroes present exchanged worried glances, not only were their kids missing but now a, by the sounds of it, highly dangerous being decided to appear in their dimension? Batman couldn't help but think that there had to be a connection to the missing teens and this.
Meanwhile in the Infinite Realms the Ghost King Castle...
Danny smoothed out his fur trimmed cape and adjusted his crown so it was floating nicely and evenly on his head. Today was the day he would get to meet his sons friends. He needed to make a good first impression. That was why he had chosen to take on his Ghost King form for this. With the wave of his hand he made an ice mirror appear before him, checking how he was looking once again. Once satisfied he nodded to himself looking over towards Fright Knight who was holding the plate of cookies he had baked himself. It was the fifth batch, and the only one that didn't turn out burned. He had needed Jazz help for this one to turn out well. It was only proper if he brought some cookies for the kids. Also he would have loved to bring his families fudge but... the last time he had tried making them had turned into a disaster.
"Thanks Frighty. Do you think Klarion's friends will like these? Wait don't answer! If they don't like them I will just get something else to thank them for taking care of my boy." Danny rambled on as he glanced at the plate of cookies in his hands. Why was he so nervous? He was just going to get to meet his little boy's friends. Sure his boy had dropped some stories about them and his adventures with them here and there. But hearing stories and meeting the kids were two different things.
Shaking his head Danny put on his best smile as he summoned a portal to Klarions apartment in the 43th Dimension of Earth. It was time to visit his boy in the place he had made his second home and thank the people that looked after his kid.

Question for the DP fandom:
Do you think Dannyâs hair turns white when it falls out? Itâs technically dead cells anyway but when it naturally falls off his head, do you think it turns white? Because I think it would be hilarious if his hairbrush just has white hair, no black strands whatsoever, and his significant other thought the worst until they know his secret.

(Part of this post with older brother danyal al ghul)
...Okay, look. Sam knows she's staring. She knows very well that she is staring. And that if she doesn't stop staring it's gonna draw her unwanted attention, and that will only have to make her explain why she's staring. Which she doesn't want to do.
She's trying not to stare, which she thinks she should get brownie points for. She tries to look away, to find a spot on the wall to stare lifelessly at, maybe she can burn holes into some of these annoying socialites' heads. But eventually her eyes drift, and suddenly she's back to staring again.
Can you blame her though? Damian Wayne looks like a very close mini-me of her fucking best friend. Seriously, it's like looking into a mirror to the past. If that mirror to the past had green eyes rather than blue and a distinctive lack of a facial scar.
The first time she sees him when her parents drag her over to Bruce Wayne to butter up to him she has to do a doubletake. Then a triple take. Then a quadruple take, just for good measure that she was seeing what she was actually seeing. She was sure she looked like one of those stress toys that when squeezed had their eyes pop out comically like a Saturday morning cartoon, that's what she certainly felt like anyways.
Look, Danny's come a decent way from being that scowl-y, jerkish little ten year old she first met when he arrived like the wind to Amity Park five years ago (even if he was still occasionally scowl-y and jerkish), but one thing that's stayed the same is how reserved he is about his home life prior to being taken in by the Fentons.
He doesn't talk about it much, and Sam's come to know that he's very good at changing the subject when it gets brought up. Even after being friends for nearly four years, the only thing she and Tuck know for certain is that he has a little brother that he refers to as 'starlight', whom he cares a lot about but left on really bad terms with. And that he's never met his father, but wants to and knows who he is.
He's never told her or Tucker who he was though, and glancing at Bruce Wayne, Sam is realizing why. She can begrudgingly acknowledge all the good he's done for Gotham, but... well, if Danny told her that Bruce Wayne was his dad, she wouldn't have believed him at all.
But she's starting to see the resemblance, as subtle as it is.
And she sees the resemblance to Damian Wayne, her eyes dropping back down to him as he wears a very Danny-like scowl on his face, arms crossed behind his back as his eyes swept around the ballroom. He was five years younger than Danny, and god it was so, so weird.
His eyes turned on to her, and they locked gazes for a moment.
Involuntarily, Sam makes a startled noise and looks away. Fingers tap against her purse, black and purple and unfortunately a clutch that only held her phone and her wallet in it. She would have kept a knife on her, but her parents put their foot down and there was a security detail at the door. Only in Gotham.
Silently, she was hoping that the little Danny-me didn't say anything. Or at least, he hadn't noticed her staring. Which was a tall order if she ever heard one -- and unfortunately, her silent prayers went unanswered as her mother's eyes dropped down onto her.
"Did you say something, Samantha?" She asks in a sickeningly sweet voice, a sound that makes Sam's skin crawl. Her dad and Bruce Wayne's attention also turns onto her, and she glowers at her mom from the corner of her eye.
"I didn't say anything." Sam says, barely keeping her tone polite as she turned her head away. Her mother clucks her tongue, disapproving, but from her peripherals doesn't pester her more
Bruce Wayne, the bastard, takes that time to turn to Sam and grace her with his dime-a-dozen billboard smiles. "I've been talking with your parents this whole time, Miss Manson, you must be terribly bored. How is your schooling going?"
Sam eyes him up and down. On one hand, she immediately wants to be snarky. It's none of his business what her school life is like, she doesn't care for his fucking small talk.
On the other hand, this was Danny's whole father. Someone who she knows that Danny has wanted to meet for, what she's assuming, his whole life. He's never brought it up much, but she remembers that very quiet, solemn conversation she and Tucker had with him where he admits to having never met his dad. But god does he want to.
And... wait. Sam's eyes narrow, and she meets Bruce Wayne's eyes. Does this man even know Danny exists? She drops her gaze down to Damian, who was staring at her suspiciously, and then back up to Bruce, and she alternates between them.
Why was Damian living with Bruce, but not Danny? Why hasn't Bruce done anything to reach out to him - what was going on with Danny's biological family that Danny had to be separated from them, but not Damian? Danny's always been kinda mysterious, but now things weren't adding up.
Was Danny given up? Does Bruce just not want Danny, but wanted Damian? Why the fuck does Bruce Wayne know about Damian but not her best friend -- or does he know and just not care? He's fought for custody for his adoptive kids before, does he just not want to fight for his other biological son? Does he think Danny's not worth it?
She's never cared much about the Wayne family before, other than to hear about the advancements on WE's eco-friendly tech, but Sam thinks she's gonna have to look into why Damian Wayne was living with the Waynes.
Slowly, with a protective anger beginning to burn in her gut and crawl up her throat, a scowl slowly curls at the corner of her lip as she redirects her glare from her mother onto Bruce. "It's going fine," She says curtly, jutting her chin out defiantly. "Me and my friend Danny started a petition to fix the leaky faucets in the girls and boys' bathrooms in order to conserve more water for the rest of the city."
She eyes his face, waiting to see if anything like recognition flashes through it. And- and nothing. Sam breathes in slowly through her nose, trying to quell the red that's blurring the edge of her vision -- does he just, not know where Danny is?
Her parents however, make vaguely displeased expressions. "Our Samantha is... quite passionate about her pet projects." Her dad says, laughing low and nervously, "she's very vocal about silly things like that."
"Her friend Daniel is perhaps even worse than she is sometimes." Her mother adds on, fanning her face with her perfectly manicured hands with a sigh. "I swear, he's the one that keeps dragging her into these things."
Sam's anger turns on its head, and she whirls on her heel like a fire-breathing dragon. "It's Danyal." It rolls out like instinct. Danny's told them both that he hates the Americanized pronunciation of his name, but in a rare moment of restraint, puts up with it for reasons unknown to her. "And Danny doesn't make me do anything, it was my idea."
The name, Danyal, seems to ring some kind of bell in Brucie Wayne's head, because she sees him and Damian quietly perk up like two cats pricking up their ears. Her eyes flick onto him immediately, something dangerous rearing its head. So Bruce Wayne knows about Danny. And he's not reaching out to him. Is he? She's not sure.
She does know that she's gonna rip his throat out if she finds out that he's known about Danny this entire time and has been ignoring him while favoring his little brother. She'll hunt down Aragon herself and steal his dragon-shifting amulet and wreck house on Bruce Wayne if that's the case. Batman and his league of vigilantes be damned. Her parents don't notice her slowly turning head towards Bruce.
But Bruce does, and she makes direct eye contact with him. His smile doesn't falter, he just tilts his head like a curious puppy and looks at Sam's parents. She hopes Bruce can read minds, she hopes he can hear her threatening him.
"Danyal?" He asks, and Sam doesn't know if she hates the fact that he said it correctly or not. She just continues burning holes into him and hoping he might spontaneously combust.
Her mother waves her hand dismissively, tilting her nose up poshly into the air. "Our dear Samantha's little... foster friend from school," she says, not even bothering to hide her disdain, "a creepy little boy with the most garish scar on his face. He's a rude little thing, not good for polite company."
Scratch that, Sam mentally alternates between ripping into her parents and Bruce. She whirls on them. "Do not talk about Danny that way." She all but snarls, and they all but ignore her.
(She's tearing up the upholstery when she gets home. She's going to paint over the fine china. She's going to do something to make them pay for this.)
"Oh yes, he was taken in by that freaky Fenton family a few years ago." Her dad continues in lieu of her mom, and they both shake their heads disapprovingly. "It's just what our city needs, another menace."
"Danny is not a menace." Sam continues, raising her voice while her hands shake with rage. Her parents finally look at her, but she can already tell that they're going to scold her for raising her voice. She bulldozes over them and jabs her black-painted finger at them. "He's got a bigger heart than the both of you combined."
"Samantha, please." her mom says, exasperated. They both give her disapproving looks, Sam thinks about grabbing champagne off the tray of a nearby waiter and throwing it in their faces. "You defend that boy far too much. What do you actually know about him and his family?"
Sam sets her jaw, puffing herself up like a dragon protecting its hoard. She steps into her mom's space. "I know that he loves the stars; you can ask him anything about astronomy and he could give you an entire lecture on the formation, class types, and various gasses that stars are made up of. He can tell you how the Earth was formed, he can tell you about the visible light spectrum and about light curves, and a whole ton of other stuff that I don't really understand. But Danny loves talking about it."
Her face twists and scowls, "I know he cares a ton about the environment and about fixing light pollution, and preserving the forests and natural habitats of animals." She nearly jabs her finger into her mom's chest, "I know he loves dogs, and that there's one he feeds every day on the way to school that he calls Cujo, its a St. Bernard puppy and Danny carries him around whenever he sees him after school, and is in the middle of training him."
It's not a total lie, but it's not the whole truth either. Cujo doesn't need food, but Danny gives him it anyways. "I know he likes spicy food and loves movies but specifically only sci-fi and horror, and he hates most martial arts movies. His favorite superhero is the Martian Manhunter, but Batman comes in at a close second." For reasons to her that were pretty unknown, but it didn't matter.
"I know he loves wordplay and making puns, which I would have never expected from him when we first met, but it's so unbelievably Danny-like that I can't imagine him not making puns." And she smiles a little to herself, she remembers the first time Danny intentionally made a pun once and it got startled laughs out of both her and Tucker.
Her smile suddenly falters, and she swallows. Her lips purse up, wobbling, and she very quickly glances over to Damian Wayne, of whom is watching her with a vaguely bewildered expression alongside Bruce.
She turns her eyes back onto her parents. "And I know that he worries a lot, even if he has a shit way of showing it. I know he had a little brother that he hasn't seen since he was adopted by the Fentons, and he doesn't talk about him often but when he does he he calls him 'starlight'." From the corner of her eye, she sees Damian jerk.
"So- so, so what if he's not 'good for polite company'." Sam's voice, embarrassingly, cracks down the middle. But she's so angry over Danny's behalf that she doesn't really care. "Or that he can be mean, and critical, and stubborn. He's learning, and he's becoming kinder by the day. That's more than I can say about you."
(She remembers when Danny finally admitted to her and Tucker being his 'closest friends'. It was sometime before the portal incident, and it felt like a milestone because beforehand he only really referred to them as his companions or allies.)
(At the time, he'd looked unsure of himself. Skittish like a stray in the back of an alleyway, almost shy in his own way. It had come out stilted, slow, like an infant taking its first steps, and it would have been endearing if it hadn't been heartbreaking.)
Her parents rear back like she'd struck them, and her mother holds a hand against her chest in aghast. Sam doesn't care, she blinks the sting out of her eyes. "Samantha." Her mother starts.
Sam cuts her off, "I don't care what you have to say, you-- you pricks." she snaps, around her, there are gasps. Belatedly, she realizes she's grown an audience, but again she doesn't care. "Danny might be an asshole, but he cares. And I'd rather be around someone whose mean but cares, than someone whose nice but doesn't."
With that, she whirls on her foot and turns on Bruce Wayne, who has been silent the entire time with a surprised expression on his face. He starts to shake out of it when Sam turns to him, but she doesn't give him the chance to speak. "Enjoy your party." She snarls, and then stalks away.

Dc x Dp Prompt #20: Wishes of a Secret Romantic
Jason doesnât really advertise it but heâs a romantic at heart. He craves having his own cliche romance with someone who will actually care about him. Sometimes he indulges in his fantasies by reading romance novels or setting up at-home dinner dates that he takes himself on. He often finds himself sighing and wishing he had someone to relate to, that would give him unconditional care and enjoy going on romantic dates with him.
~~~
Desiree doesnât quite know how she ended up supervising this beautiful mess but sheâs not complaining. If anything she has some sweet gossip to share at girls night and a story for Ghost Writer to obsess over.
~~~ It starts like this:
Ever since Frostbite had taken to teaching the young ghost boy lessons on the Realms Culture and Ghost Biology heâd made great strides in his diplomatic and medical skills. His fighting skills were already impressive but were refined under the tutelage of the warriors of Far Frozen. Personally, she thinks he is grooming the Boy to join the Council of Ancients which have taken a more active role in governance now that Pariah has been defeated for a second time.
The boy has been going around and creating treaties with his enemies in which he finds them another outlet for their obsessions. He has already worked out deals with the likes of Technus, Amorpho, and oddly enough a joint deal between Penelope Spectra and Walker.
Technus was allowed to indulge in his technological creation so long as he was supervised by the Pharoah boy or doing on of the preapproved tasks of mischief, such as causing mild inconvenience to the bastards in white.
He had set up Amorpho with a âCosplay TikTokâ on which he was able to show off his different forms and get recognition for them. Heâd amassed a large following thespians and costume artists who greatly admired him.
Due to his position on the Council, the Boy managed to get Spectra and Walker to agree to take part in the new justice system the Council had been setting up. Walker could run his prison so long as he abided by the rules and scentence lengths set by the Council. And Spectra was free to torment those whom the council deemed the worthy of the worst punishments. Many ghosts had grievances against living and non-living menaces, last she heard, there was a whole list for Spectra to go down. Currently, she was in another universe tormenting a man named Eobard Thawne, who went by a ridiculous name called the Reverse Flash. Once she had her fill of torment, they would be taken to Walkerâs prison.
The Ghostling continued to do this with many of his former adversaries until he came knocking at the door to her lair. She was well aware of what the GhostBoy would want, and was curious as to what he could offer her.
She granted him the grace of her presence and was charmed by his earnest nature. He genuinely wanted to know her story and obsessions so that he could find the best way to help her. She revealed to him it was not Desire as many people assumed but Fulfillment. She wanted to people to attain their desires in place of how she had been unable too. But there are consequences to wish granting so thereâs only so much the Boy could do.
The ghostling had been unbelievable smug when he wished that her wishes wouldnât have catastrophically negative outcomes. When she granted and skeptically tested this wish she found it had worked. The boy grew even more smug.
Of course balance had to be maintained so her power became not weaker per say, just more indirect. During their trial run, Desiree was granting the wish young boy had wished for a large cookie. Instead of instantly summoning a 50 foot tall cookie as she would have previously done, she simply caused his mother to have the desire to bake cookies and then had two of them fuse together in the oven creating one larger cookie.
A bit more round about than she prefers but it got the job done.
The two brokered a deal that would allow Desiree to travel into the mortal realm and grant the wishes she desired to, so long as the wouldnât cause catastrophically negative outcomes in the future. Young Phantom had even gone as far as to direct her to the so-called Make-A-Wish foundation in which she could find many deserving children to fulfill the wishes of.
~~~
One night Desiree had been flying through the mortal realm to visit a friend, a city spirit she hadnât seen in ages. As she flew over the city a strong sense of longing and desire resonated with her core. Where there was desire there was someone with a wish. Invisible, she flew down to the source of these feelings to investigate.
She ended up out side the window of a building that held longer traces of death and her friendâs magic. She peered through to see a young man putting the finishing touches on a lavish dinner. She observed as he created a beautiful meal with an air of melancholy before pouring himself a glass of wine and turning on his television to watch mediocre romantic comedies. Intrigued by this young man, Desiree decided to lurk and observe for a while, perhaps he would soon reveal the wish his heart yearned for?
-
Jason sighed into his Osso Bucco as another romantic comedy began to play. Man he really was bumming himself out wasnât he. He shook his head and took a sip of his wine. He winced slightly as some cringey kidsâ movie called How to Build A Better Boy appeared on screen. How had that even gotten in his queue? However, his laziness won out and he made no move to change it, resigning himself to a hour and a half or so of second-hand embarrassment and semi-decent acting.
As he watched the best friend girl make a virtual boyfriend based on her friend, the main girlâs, preferences and huffed to himself. Oh if only things could be that easy. He hummed to himself adding on his own thoughts to the teen girlâs rambling list.
â If only, sister. Iâd wish for a sensitive and sweet guy too. Someone who wouldnât mind death jokes, or my odd hours. Someone who I could just relax and nerd out with. Someone whoâd go on romantic dates with me so I wouldnât have to sit here eating this nice dinner on my own. Yeah, Iâd wish for my perfect guy too.â
Suddenly, a chill washed over Jason and his hair stood on edge. He whipped his head around in search for an intruder only to see nothing there. He scanned the apartment suspiciously before his eyes landed on an open window. He sighed, reassured it was just a draft and turned back to the movie.
~
Desiree was touched by the earnest desires of the young man who was touched by both death and her friendâs magic. It almost reminded her of her own desires for romance while she was still living. Perhaps she would stick around to see how this wish played out for the young man~?
Danny no longer has a haunt. So⌠he decides to find another one. And while he technically has a whole world (other dimensions arenât an option because heâs going to stay near where Jazzâs grave is, damn it) thereâs only a couple of other places with enough ambient ectoplasm to sustain him. Nanda Parbat, Tokyo, and Gotham.
Nanda Parbat had a weird old musty immortal that kept trying to summon him and exchange power for the ability to âtake a worthy body and rain as much destructionâ as heâd like. As if Danny would need a body to bring the world to its knees.
Tokyo⌠itâs too far from Jazzâs grave. He could ask Wulf or even open his own portal but when Danny tried it out, Tokyo was too peaceful. Obviously thereâs crime, but nothing⌠nothing big like Dannyâs used to.
Danny ends up picking Gotham, even if the sewer zombies and the weird group of rich fruit loops with an adoption problem creeps him out. So, he destroys the portal, packs up his parentsâ house and sells it, and hauls ass to the cesspool calling his name. His familyâs stuff is stored respectfully in a vault located on the deepest parts of his personal haunt in the Infinite Realms.
And honestly, heâs doing better. Sure, heâs got a shitty apartment near another revenantâs almost-haunt and he feels like heâs drowning all of the time, but Danny isnât in danger of turning into Dan, heâs catching up on royal paperwork, and heâs got like a job as a barista. In his own coffee shop that paid for using his parentâs money (who, despite their hazardous everything, made a crap ton of money off of their more normal inventions).
Gothamâs got some pretty interesting local gangs, most of which respected the sanctity of Dannyâs cafe. Sure, they tried blowing it up and tried extorting money from him in the form of âprotection costsâ but after three months of failure, they gave up.
(Really, the local gangs gave up when they saw him take three shotgun shells to the chest and continued to work.) (They didnât know it never hit him. Intangibility is extremely useful.)
The Rogues, on the other hand, just gave Danny flashbacks. Their gimmicks are different, sure, but after years of Box Ghost, Skuller, Lunch Lady, etc., Dannyâs more than done with costumed villains. They donât bother him either. Some of the reason is probably due to Harley and Ivy, who had walked into the cafe and (because they were bruised and scratched up from a fight) triggered Dannyâs mother hen tendencies. They were promptly fed and watered and caffeinated and their hyenas were also similarly taken care of. They declared the cafe under their protection and that was that.
Red Hood stops by, and begins to interrogate him. But when Danny met his⌠helmet eyes? The crime lord paused, paid for his coffee, and sat in a corner table of the cafe for the rest of the day.
And he kept coming back?
But Danny figures itâs because Hood was a revenant and people who had come close to death tends to feel more comfortable around him.
(Considering this is Gotham where people almost die every other day? Yeah, heâs pretty much friends with everyone. Or at least, less likely to get shot.)
(Hood does stay because of the Kingâs presence and the Pit calming itself, but also Dannyâs hot and heâs got a sleeper build and Hood definitely did not imagine himself in the place of the heavy box he saw Danny lift effortlessly onto a table. No.)
But of course, the peace couldnât last forever. But by then, Danny was so antsy, he welcomed the trouble with open arms.
It starts with a clown. Danny knows who he is. He knows who Danny is.
So, Danny has no idea why the clown thought it would be a good idea to aggravate the owner of Gothamâs official neutral grounds. See, Clovkwork? Dannyâs learned how to gauge his own political importance!
âHAHAHAHAHA! COME OUT, DANNY-BOY! LET ME TELL YOU A JOKE!â
Danny comes out and grabs a chair, and with a flat expression, says, âyouâre not funny and I hate clowns.â
And then he swings and slams the chair into the Jokerâs face. Over and over again until Dannyâs sure the clown wonât get back up. The thing about Gothamâs outdoor chairs is that theyâre mad out of steel and are bolted down to the ground to prevent undedicated thieves (dedicated thieves can and will steal the bolted down steel chairs). The Jokerâs hired muscle just watched this scrawny twenty-something year old yank the steel chair and take some of the fucking ground and the bolts with it and beat the fuck out of their boss who is the literal Joker.
They surrender on the spot and is taken to jail. Danny just smiles at the officers who come by and since heâs got pretty privilege and they donât want to mess with the guy who, again, owns one of Gothamâs official neutral ground and also beat up Joker without breaking a sweat, the officers just lets him go with a warning.
And then the bats comes, and wow, Dannyâs playing mentor to a formally dead person again!
But before that, the Red Hood asks for an autograph on the Gotham Gazette article with a picture of a tired Danny standing over Jokerâs prone body. Then Hood stammers through asking Danny out (which Danny said yes to because heâs tired, not blind, and Hood is built like a brick house and HOT).
Batman interrogates him. Danny, who can tell that this man needs therapy and is Sad TM, tells Bats that Dannyâs died before and thatâs why heâs like this. He also calls Batman a furry, but like in a nice way. And then he kicks Batman out with a coffee and a file on Nanda Parbat.
Now, Dannyâs got a date to prepare for and he realizes that maybe this is what Jazz wanted for him- to be happy and mostly safe and happy. (Or, happier, he thinks. Itâs been a long time since heâs been truly happy, but this might be a good start)
Prompt 214
âI did an oopsie.âÂ
Clockwork paused in his work, gaze turning from his work towards his ghostling (it didnât matter if he was an adult, heâd always be his ghostling) who was smiling nervously, avoiding his eyes.Â
âOh?â He kept his tone light, even as he worked on untangling a time knot. Honestly at least Danny was immune to any effect of time, even if he couldnât look into his timelines in exchange. It came with being the other half of Infinity.Â
âYeeah⌠you know that corner of the multiverse you told me not to go to because youâre working on some time problems? I might have stumbled into one of the worlds in the cornerâŚâÂ
He stopped his machinations, fully turning towards Danny- Space, his Core whispered and quivered in utter delight at having an Equal in power- with a raised eyebrow, leaning on his staff and silently telling him to explain.Â
Danny poked his fingers together, giving a nervous laugh. âSo uh, I was just exploring right? Well me and Ellie, you know how she gets when she canât wander, and um⌠I er, we might have messed with some things in the creation of it⌠I didnât know it was part of that universe, I swear! It was so far at the fringes and halfway into the Zone and I couldnât just let a universe die before it began and-â
Oh- Oh! His ghostling (and his grand-ghostlings it sounded like) had claimed his first universe! He could put off these time knots, this was a grand milestone for any Ancient, nevermind such a primordial force as one of theirs.
And this is how a DC world came into being with humans evolving with more avian traits. Like wings. And claws. Look, Dan thought itâd be funny if they gave baby humanity wings and Ellie started rambling about how much farther they could travel if they had them and Danny thought it could be cool. Oh well, time to keep an eye on their itty baby world nowâŚ
imagine casper high goes to a school trip to a museum a few hours out of the amity park and every senior gets paired up with two sophomores. fentons were paired up which is easier for danny if theres a ghost emergency but still unhappy bc pairing up with your genius sister that you are always compared to in a school trip sucks. and whos the second sophomore you may ask, its wes fucking weston.
danny blames the fenton luck for that. none of them are happy with the arrangement other than jazz. jazz heard about wes but never got to meet him and she wants to psychoanalyze him so shes happy.
at the trip the three of them goes to some kind of a shop and as they were paying, the cashier asks jazz if she brought her brother and his friend. she laughs and says yes then the cashier points at wes and compliments him and jazz about how similar they look and jokes about strong genes.
danny was OFFENDED. at first wes was also offended but after seeing how much it bothers danny he decided to play along. the rest of the trip wes acted like jazz was his sister just to piss of danny. which wasnt that hard wes was the youngest of three, he didnt have a sister but had two brothers (easton who was almost five years older and kyle who was just a year older but wouldnt stop shove it in wes' face that he was older) so it wasnt that hard for wes to act like a little brother. after a while he actually enjoyed 'having a sister'. jazz didnt really mind wes but took a mental note to ask about his family to understand him better.
danny was still pissed (and jealous that he was 'sharing' his sister but he would NOT admit this to anyone) but find it oddly fun to pair up with wes (other than the parts where wes acted like jazz was his sister or trying to ask questions about ghosts). wes knew a lot about different things. especially about the ancient greek. he says its bc he likes searching stuff he sees. and for wes even though he would rather DIE to admit he enjoyed danny's company. as much as people way danny was the stupid one in a family of geniuses wes knew it was wrong. the trip proved it to him once again.
danny wouldnt shut up about how some machines worked and ancients forbid when they entered the space part of the museum danny took over all the explanations with too much details. jazz on the other hand could see how much the two boys would get along if they dropped their stupid beef.
jazz listened both of them infodumping about their interest with a smile on her face, sometimes adding her own opinion or the missed little informations or fun fact about them. on some occasions sam and tucker would flee from their own groups to join them and quite enjoyed it. when wes talked about ancient greek sam would join in and when danny talked about mechanics tucker would join in with him.
in the end of the trip jazz bought little souvenirs for both of the boys and for herself. a little matching key chains. they acted like that was cringe and that they would never use it.
a week later jazz saw that little key chain on danny's pencil case. a few days later she also saw it hanging on wes' bag.
#you dont know how many times ppl thought my friend was my sister's sister or my mom's daughter WHILE I WAS THERE#the struggle of having straight hair in a curly haired family#it was gonna be little silly thing about danny getting pissed of but idk it got longer#wes weston#danny fenton#jazz fenton#sam manson#tucker foley#jazz being an older sister to all means everything to me#jasmine fenton#daniel fenton#wesley weston#samantha manson#danny phantom#aphelynx writes#dp
Fictober23 Prompt: 17 - "I never said it would be easy."
Fandom: DPxDC
Rating: T
Warnings: -
A/N: I saw a post with a comment that Dan chronological wise is ten years old according to a wiki, I haven't seen it myself but I decided to run with it for this anyway.
It was supposed to be a normal morning but that got quickly interrupted by a long drawn out shout of 'Bruce' and a white and black blur suddenly flying though their ceiling right at Bruce. Two out of four present bat-kids instantly sprang up from their chairs into defense positions and with drawn weapons. The other two only arched an eyebrow before turning their attention back to their breakfast with a suppressed laugh, they had seen that black and white blur often enough during their times as Robin.
Damian glared at his older brothers as he stood with drawn throwing knives while Tim after a second of realization sighed, righten his chair from the ground and sat only slightly embarrassed at how Dick and Jason laughed.
Hovering above their breakfast table with his hands on Bruce's shoulder was now Phantom also known as Danny Nightingale, looking completely frazzled. The source of the yell as well as white and black blur from seconds ago.
"Bruce! I need your help! Please! I can't ask Jazz because she is busy and I sure as hell won't ask Trenchcoat. I don't think Supes can handle them and you're like the only one else I could think of to ask! Bruce, please!"
None of the bat kids really knew how long exactly Bruce had known Phantom. The man had only recently admitted to personally knowing the Ghost Hero when Nightwing had caught Phantom collapsing onto Batman and de-transforming and Batman handling it like that hadn't been the first time. They only knew that he had been an unofficial member of Justice League Dark and was the one that helped Jason with his Pit Madness as well as came to visit every now and then as Danny. What they had learned additionally from Alfred was that Phantom was the adopted son of Alfred's old friend and that when Bruce had been younger, he often came to visit or to hang out with them to escape his own family drama.
The bat-kids had figured out that way that Bruce and Danny were probably something akin to childhood friends that both also worked in the hero buisness.
Either way no one was in danger and so they watched on with curiosity as to what Phantom wanted. So far the Ghost Hero was still rambling on and on about something he couldn't entrust to anyone other than Bruce, while their father was leisurely taking a sip from his coffee completely pokerfaced like he was used to the other man rambling at him like that.
"Danny." Bruce finally cut in as the other was about to restart his entire plea for help. "World ending or personal."
The white haired man blinked as he finally floated to the side and let his reformed feet touch the ground. "Both? Sort of?"
Bruce grunted, the universal sigh for the other man to elaborate and the children payed attention interested on what was going on.
"I have a diplomatic meeting with the Tempest Dimension. One of their Demon Lords discovered that interdimensional travel is actually possible by having created a portal when he tried to teleport somewhere in their Dimension. I can't take Dani and Dan with me for this, the last time I allowed them to accompany me they nearly caused a dimensional war. Clockwork doesn't want to watch them, Jazz is to busy trying her newest psychological tortur- I mean therapy on Joker and I can't make the fruitloop watch them since both Dan and Dani swore they would wreck havoc if I leave them with him during football season."
Bruce arched an eyebrow and Danny pinched the bridge of his nose. "Yea I know, but last time Trenchcoat watched them he nearly sold his soul again to never ever babysit them again. And Clark is too nice to watch them, they will use it against him."
Bruce hummed. "How old are they now?"
"Five and ten body wise since the assimilation process with their bodies finished a couple years ago. They should start normal aging soon."
The bat-kids exchanged confused, disturbed and partially horrified looks at what the two men were talking about. There were so many questions they had. They were wondering if they could make Bruce talk about his childhood and get some information about Phantom that way. Tim had attempted researching him once and barely found anything besides some disturbing information about a haunted tourist town called Amity Park that was Phantom's territory.
"Bruce! Please! They have a dragon with a human body in that dimension! I just know that Dan or Dani will attempt to fight him!" Suddenly an idea popped in Dicks head and exchanged a glance with his siblings, checking if they had similar thoughts.
"We could watch them!" Dick then piped up, this was their chance to find out more about Phantom and his relationship with their dad.
Wide green eyes blinked at Dick and for a moment he felt like he had made a grave mistake, especially as he noticed Jason was sneaking away now like he decided he did not want to be part of any of this. Which is fair but come on, this was their chance.
"Are you sure?" Phantom questioned him carefully, side eyeing Bruce who was still calmly sipping his coffee and gave phantom a slight nod.
"You said five and ten, right? How bad can it be watching kids their age! They can even hang out with me and Dami!"
"Do not involve me-" Damian's complaint was shushed by Tim stuffing a pancake in the others mouth, earning him a death glare from their youngest but it was good to know that at least one of them was on his side with this plan.
This time Danny exchanged a full on look with their father, it appeared like they were silently talking. Something Dick doesn't really remember Bruce doing with anyone in the way he saw it right now.
"Well if you say soâŚ" Phantom slowly agreed before reaching with his hand into a green portal pulling out a heavy looking bag. "This is the medicine box. If either of them look the slightest bit melty use the syringes in here. That's ecto-dejecto and basically ghost medicine for them. Though for emergencies there is a portal amulet that leads right to Frostbite."
The bat-kids looked stunned at what Danny was holding up before putting it back into the medical box and pulling out a silver green thermos front he bag. "If Dan misbehaves in any way or form use this to put him in time out. Just point the open Thermos in his direction and press the button down here. Pressing the button again will release him, but if he misbehaves to the point of having to use the thermos you can leave him in there until I pick them up again."
They knew that Phantom wasn't completely human but was that normal parenting? Hadn't they seen him use that thermos on enemies of the JLD before? And he was using it to discipline his kids?
"They know better than to overshadow anyone to get their will but in case one of them does, these bracelets should keep you safe from it. Otherwise call Bruce, he is one of the four and a half adults they listen to too."
"Is all of that really necessary? I am just babysitting them right?" Dick asked, still a bit stunned as Phantom handed him the bag.
"Yes. I never said it would be easy." The man only answered before opening another portal and sticking his head through for a brief moment.
A little girl of five hopped out of it a second later looking like a perfect copy of Danny Nightingale's human form, though what was more shocking was the hulk of a man with flaming hair coming through the portal growling and snarling at them as the grown man stood behind the girl with crossed arms. From the corner of his eyes Dick saw Phantom pinching the bridge of his nose. Before he floated over to the tall man and quite frankly pinched and pulled on that man's ear.
"Dan. Human-form now."
The man continued to growl and snarl for a moment with blazing red eyes before two white circles formed around his middle. A transformation they had seen a couple of times before from Phantom after Bruce had admitted to knowing him personally and introduced him as Danny.
Instead of the hulking beast of a man there was now a ten years old boy that looked surprisingly similar to Damian just lighter skinned and blue eyed. The boy still growled at them with his arms crossed while the little girl giggled. Damian was looking at the two with narrowed eyes before he turned his stare on Bruce.
"This is Dani and Dan." Danny introduced the two kids and Dick heard Tim mutter something about unoriginality when it came to naming. But before anyone else could comment on anything or even greet the kids an eyeball appeared out of thin air. The ghost hero and his kids looked at it for a moment before the man sighed dismissing it with a wave of his hand.
"I have to go now! Dani, Dan behave and play nice. If anything goes wrong Bruce has my emergency summoning pendant!" A second later Phantom disappeared through the portal the kids had come in, the little girl, Dani, gleefully shouting a quick "Bye mom!" Before the portal closed.
There was a moment of silence before Damian decided to break it. "Father, I believe there is something you have failed to inform us about."
"And that would be?"
"The existence of blood related siblings you have sired with Phantom."
second chances donât come for free
cw/tw: child death and child abuse and related traumas
7652 words (!?) ao3
Everyone in the family had secrets, and everyone knew that everyone in the family had secrets. It was a promise that came with the crest they all wore on their chest. Some were more open than others, like the way that Richard always avoided tight ropes despite his impeccable balance, and how Father never enters the 4th room on the west wing of the 3rd floor.
Damian had secrets too.Â
After a relatively calm night by Gothamâs standards they returned to a briefing for their next big mission. Damian was one of the last to return, busy settling a mugging attempt on his return.Â
âGood, looks like everyoneâs here.â Father announced, gathering the attention of the rest of the occupants of the room.Â
âLooks like a full house.â Richard commented lightly looking around as everyone gathered around the computer. Todd leaned casually on the railway to the changing room away from the crowd but close enough to be included, Drake was clicking away at the keyboard as usual. Brown and Cain stuffing in their last cookie before butting the container away. Thomas stood idly by waiting for Father to explain what their next operation was. Barabra likely was listening from a separate location as usual.Â
âWeâve received a tip from a trusted source that the League is up to suspicious activity.â Father began, as Drake pulled up a few schematics on the screen.Â
âWhen are they not?â Brown scoffed, lightly jabbing Richard in the arm. He chuckled lightly.Â
âNaturally,â Father continued, âIt would be irresponsible for us to all go and leave Gotham unprotected so Spoiler, Orphan, and Signal will stay to cover the city while the rest of us are gone. Iâve informed Batwoman as well, and sheâs available to assist you if the situation demands.â Father paused to give the rest an opening to speak, when no one did so, he continued. âWeâve discovered that theyâve found a rare washup of some form of solidified Lazarus Waters. We donât have much information on the substance itself apart from what's essentially speculation. Regardless if the League found a way to solidify the Waters, there is no telling what they would find themselves in possession of, weapons, tech, humans at a level weâve never seen.â Damian knew all too well what the League was capable of. After all, he had been the League. Father continued explaining the details of the plan and the positions each of them were meant to play.Â
It would be the first time Damian returned to a League of Assassins base since he had first left them 7 years ago and he had met his Father at his own doorstep for the very first time at the age of 10. It had only been the lifetime's worth of rigorous training that kept Damian from curling into his gut at the sight of those eyes.Â
The eyes that haunted Damian the last days he had stayed in the league when Mother had ordered him to pack anything he wished to take with him. The look of terror in the eyes that look just like the one that calls him Champ while he ruffles his hair and tells him to go sleep early since it was a school night.Â
Damian found himself freshly showered and comfortably under his duvet, then a moment later he was pulling them off to go through the motions of his day. Next thing Damian knew he was in his Robin uniform in a jet that would be taking him to the sight of his biggest mistake.Â
The League had always kept a close record of Damianâs activities since he had been taken out of his test tube. Every daily schedule, no matter how mundane, every mission report, no matter how simple, was expertly stored in the Leagueâs database.Â
That was with the exception of the final test. The League had taken extensive measures to scrub away any traces of the final test before Damian had gone to live with Father.Â
When Father and Drake had meticulously gone through every file about Damian on his arrival to the manor, Damian was told his first kill had been at the age of 4, a politician in his house in the capital city not far from the Leagueâs Nanda Parbat base.Â
Though Damian had only understood what it meant to kill - to watch death - only 3 days before he had met his father.Â
âDamian.â Richard called, Damian hadnât noticed that he had been approached, âAre you sure you're clear for this mission.â He sounded concerned.Â
âYes.â Damian responded with a frown. He had his own mission, he could not afford to be benched.Â
âYou seem kind of out of it. I know you donât have the best memories with the League and none of us are going to force you to go if you're not ready,â Richard was trying to seem approachable and understanding, and perhaps Damian should be more reciprocative of his efforts. But he âknewâ? What exactly did Richard Grayson âknowâ about the League? About what happened to Damian in the League?Â
Damian bit his tongue, there was no point in lashing out before a mission only for it to impede needlessly on their cohesiveness âWould you prefer for me to bounce off the walls in excitement?â Damian allowed the snark to roll off his tongue, and raised a brow at the older boy.Â
Grayson let himself laugh at that, âNo, I suppose not.â And with that Damian was alone again.Â
When Damian was 3, Mother had taken him to watch the older kids train. Damian had noticed someone else there, another boy around his age. They looked similar even, but not identical. Damian remembered the jealousy he felt when he started noticing the similarities the boy shared with Motherâs features, the audacity that he looked more like Damianâs mother than Damian himself. When he told Mother, she had found it humorous and praised Damian for looking more like his father insead.
While Damian sat on the bench with mother, their escorts behind them, the boy sat alone at a bench further away. âDamian, do you know who that boy is?â Mother had leaned in to ask him.
âNo, Mother.â He answered honestly.
âThat is Danyal al-Ghul, your twin brother by 76 seconds.â
âWhat is a brother, Mother?â
âYour opponent in all that you do, Damian, he is your enemy. You must always remember that.â Damian made his best efforts to remember that, because of course Mother was always right.
Damian and Danyal had been assigned rooms across the hall from each other but they never met outside of coincidental encounters. And whenever they had, someone had always been there to remind Damian that Danyal was not to be trusted, that he would get under Damianâs skin, find ways to exploit Damian, a cheat and a smear on the al-Ghul bloodline. One of his teachers at the time had told him Mother wouldâve done well to leave that one in the tube he was born from. The people of the League would not dare lie to an heir of the Demonâs Head, so Damian believed them.
 One night, after a particularly tiring day of training, Damian found he couldnât sleep and decided to sneak out onto the roof. Damian had not been expecting anyone to be there but he was surprised to see the boy there. He considered his options, assessing his opponent like he had been taught to do. The enemy, Danyal, seemed to act purposefully unaware of Damianâs presence there. There were no weapons stored on him, and his posture was incredibly lax and he simply stared at the stars in the night sky.Â
With a sigh, Damian sat silently at his side of the building, and looked into the far expenses of the League's base and the mountains that surrounded it. Though Damian had intended to be alone, he found an unfamiliar sense of comfort from the un-accosting presence of the other, unlike the others of the League who always seemed to need to say something to him. But Damian knew, regardless, the boy was not to be trusted.Â
The next night Damain found himself climbing out of his window again, and found Danyal already there. For the next three months, every night Damian would sneak out of his window onto the rooftop and find Danyal already there, and the both of them would sit there in a comfortable silence, back turned to the other.Â
One day Damian had been sent out for a mission, nothing he wasnât used to. Except the location was quite far so he had to leave early in the morning and would be returning much later in the day. He had managed to complete his mission much earlier than anticipated, and so with this newly earned time, Damian snuck off to explore instead of heading straight to the rendezvous point. Easily pickpocketing a handful of cash unnoticed from a preoccupied group of wealthy looking men, Damian pursued the options.Â
Perhaps he could buy a toy, a train set the other kids were ogling at. Except that would be much too difficult to hide, and needless to say Mother would not approve of such distractions. Damian overheard some others talking about the deliciousness of the sweets in one store, and he made up his mind. He bought 4 different types, not sure which would be the best, handing over his money to the clerk and heading out of the store.Â
Damian found himself anticipating the rooftop of his room, and wondering how Danyal would react to Damianâs new found treasure. Slipping the chocolates out of their hiding spot, Damian snuck all 4 bars onto his usual spot on the roof. Letting the wrapper crinkle loudly as he purposely fiddled with it unnecessarily, Damian successfully earned a curious glance from his roofmate. Damian took the first bite of the bar labeled âDark Chocolateâ and let himself enjoy the bitter sweetness of it, as Danyal looked at the candy bars spread haphazardly across the rooftop.Â
Not liking that he was beginning to lose Danyalâs attention, and not receiving the eager response he was expecting, Damian found himself sticking a piece of chocolate towards the other boy, offering it to him. Danyal hesitantly took it, eyed it cautiously. Some of the chocolate had already melted on Damianâs fingers. âWhat is this?â Danyal asked him.Â
âItâs chocolate.â Damian explained to the other six-year old, not that he had really known what chocolate was either.Â
âChocolate.â Danyal repeated, before carefully nibbling on the side of it. His eyes went wide in surprise at the sweetness, and he looked up at Damian in disbelief. âWoah.â He breathed, taking a much bigger bite.Â
Damian, having been the one to discover this, smiled pridefully at the other boy, âThere's different ones too.â He proclaimed.Â
âReally?â Danyal asked wide-eyed crawling closer to Damian who turned around to face him.Â
At the end of that night, they were short 4 candy bars as they tried to keep their whispers hushed and the melted chocolate on their fingers left stains on the floor of the roof. Damian wondered how Danyal was supposed to be the villainous enemy everyone told him he was, but Damian was not so easy to trust, after all he was an assassin of the League, the heir to the Demonâs Head.Â
Every night they would meet on the rooftops, exchanging souvenirs, sharing snacks, telling each other stories of the stars and mountain demons. After a while Damian had forgotten what he had been warned of for his whole life, and would look forward to meeting with Danyal every night. Maybe Danyal wasnât his brother, like Mother had said.Â
Perhaps Mother was mistaken. Â
One night, Danyal didnât show. Damian waited for him for an hour, but the otherâs side of the roof remained unattended. Finally, having had enough, Damian skillfully snuck over to the other side of the roof and peeked through his neighborâs window to see if he had fallen asleep, but there was no sign of Danyal in his room, either.
Feelings Damian didnât understand swirled in his gut, the ones he got when the mission unexpectedly goes off script, or the sharp end of a weapon comes closer than he wouldâve liked. Hurriedly, he slipped down, letting himself stay hidden in the shadows, as he searched for the boy that wasnât his brother. The kitchen, the hall, the training room, the weapons room, the barracks, the field, the river in the back, Danyal was nowhere.Â
Tired, and out of breath, Damian tried to formulate a plan. Where could Danyal have gone?
âYoung Master Damian.â At the voice Damian instinctively reached for his sword only to find it not there. Had he forgotten to bring it with him? Damian assessed who had caught him, and easily recognized by the uniform that it was one of the servants.Â
âWhat are you doing here?â Damian demanded, frustration at his futile efforts at finding his⌠-at finding Danyal. Â
âI am cleaning the walkways, as we are to do every 10 days, Young Master. It is more convenient to do it at night, since there are less people around.â The servant explained, bowing his head. They seemed scared of what Damian may do to them. But when Damian did not respond, the servant hesitated before speaking again, âIf I may ask, Young Master, what are you doing here at this late hour?âÂ
Damian turned to the servant again, if they had been out cleaning as they said for the previous hours past curfew then perhaps they had seen or heard where Danyal had gone. âDo you know of Danyal al-Ghul?â Damian made sure his tone was void of emotions, it would not do either of them well for it to spread that Damian had found himself fond of Danyal.Â
The servantâs face paled slightly at the name, there was a small stutter before they finally spoke, âYoung Master Danyal should be in his room at this hour.â The servant began fiddling, with the handle of the broomstick.
Why was he lying? âWhere is he?â Damian kept his voice even, demanding respect.Â
âI- I do not know where the Young Master is.â The servant pleaded, but Damian didnât believe him.Â
Anger growing at the situation, âTell me.â He demanded.Â
âThe Demonâs Head, and The Lady Talia were to speak with him.â The servant spluttered out, caving under the pressure.Â
Why would Mother and Grandfather seek out Danyal at this hour of the night? The feeling from before only strengthened as Damian rushed to find him.
âDamian.â Mother asked surprised, catching him easily at the door, âWhat are you doing here?â Damain tried to get a look inside the room, but Mother had positioned her body to block his view.Â
âMother, shouldnât you be asleep by now.â Damian asked, trying to find the casualness in his voice despite feeling like every vein in his body was being controlled to squeeze his chest.Â
Mother looked down at him in amusement, âI should say that to you.â Damian tried to force his way through the door, but he was no match for Mother, âWhy are you here Damian?â She repeated.Â
âI would like to speak with Grandfather.â He tried, lies slipping easily out of his mouth.Â
âIâm sure it can wait till the morning, your Grandfather is tired from a hard day's work.â When Mother pushed her hair behind her shoulder, Damian wondered why there were splotches of fresh blood on her hand.Â
Damian stood there in defiance, and Mother seemed to consider him for a while. âPerhaps since you're merely a child you wouldnât understand.â Mother thought aloud.Â
âI am seven, Mother, nearly eight. I am hardly a child, and have far surpassed the many of the teachers youâve assigned me. I can understand.â Damian demanded. He needed to find Danyal.Â
Mother straightened, and with a nod, moved from the entrance allowing Damian to enter. There on the floor was a trail of blood, that led to one of the darker corners of the room, and Damian couldnât tell what the heap on the floor was.Â
âDamian, you should be in your room.â Grandfather chided, sitting in his chair by the fireplace. The darkness of the room finally became accustomed to Damian, as he began making out the details of the room. Grandfather didnât have his cane, instead it was left closer to the heap in the corner. The heap had its hair cut messily just like Danyalâs always was, and its hands were smaller than an adults, as it tried to bundle itself together. The heap moved slightly, itâs head turning to look at Damian. Damian drew in his breath, at the sight of Danyalâs fluttering consciousness on the floor.Â
Mother was right, Damian didnât understand.Â
Grandfather followed his gaze, and nodded understandingly, placing a lit pipe between his lips. âDanyal is simply being punished.â Grandfather explained. Damian couldn't find the word to ask what for, but Grandfather explained anyway. âHe seems to think he is your equal, in the way he speaks and acts. As if he is one of the respectable heirs of the Demonâs Head.â Damian didnât understand what that meant either. If Danyal was meant to be his brother, would he not have equal claim as heir as Damian did.Â
âHe is my equal. Mother said so herself.â Damian stated, not sure the source of his deep rage at his Grandfather and Mother at that moment.Â
Grandfather turned a questioning look at Mother. Mother turned to Damian. âWhat are you talking about, my son?âÂ
âYou said that Danyal was my brother.â Damian said, it was true that Mother had said this, regardless of whether Danyal should be considered Damianâs brother, âA brother is an opponent, someone waiting to strike me down at any moment. My enemy in all that I do.â Damian recited Motherâs own words, though he could not put his faith in them. Danyal had always listened to Damian, understood Damian, laughed at his jokes and added with his own, always the first one to comfort Damain. They werenât brothers. âIf he is to be my enemy, should he not be on the same grounds as I, as a true equal in skill?âÂ
Grandfather considered what he said, and shared another look with Mother. âI suppose I see the reason in your words.â Grandfather turned to him again, âWhy have you come Damian?âÂ
âI simply was taking a late night walk since I couldnât sleep, and I thought I would perhaps feel better if I came to visit you. I did not expect to see Mother here.â Damian was surprised how easily it was to lie to the only people he had trusted for the previous year of his life.
Grandfather let his hand rest on Damianâs shoulder âTake him back and dress his wounds.â He ordered Damian, âAnd do not trust his words, he simply wishes to get under your skin. Manipulate you.â The doors to the room shut behind them as Damian carried the body of his battered enemy back to his room, and patched up his wounds.Â
Danyal was sitting on Damianâs bed, fluttering on the line of consciousness. âWhat you said before,â his voice was barely above a whisper and he spoke slowly as his words meshed together. Damian listened raptly, âto Grandfather, do you-â Danyal seemed to be having a hard time forming the question, but Damian understood.Â
âIt was the truth.â Damain said easily, Danyal's face fell at the admission, but Damian was quick to explain, âIt was true that Mother told me what âbrotherâ meant, and that was the true meaning of brother. But I do not think of you as my brother.â Danyal examined him for a moment, trying to determine if he was being honest.Â
âI trust you.â Danyal said with more conviction than Damian thought he could possess in that moment. He trusted Damianâs words and actions when not even Mother or Grandfather did.Â
Finishing with the last bandaid, Damian looked at Danyal. âI trust you, too.â Trust seemed to light a word for Danyal, but Damian was not sure what word he should have used instead.Â
That was because Damian did not know what love was, and because Damian al-Ghul loved his brother.
âMother you called for me?â Damian sat in the chair opposite of Motherâs study.Â
âDamain, youâre here.â She greeted, not looking up from her screens. Damain waited for her to finish what she was working on, arms crossed impatiently. âYou do remember who your father is?â Mother started, turning the screen with two of Fatherâs well-known persona on display. One of billionaire Bruce Wayne greeting guests at a function, and the other of the Batman perched near the head of a gargoyle.Â
âOf course, I remember, Mother.â Damian sighed in resignation. âBruce Wayne and his alter ego, Batman.â He recited.Â
âGood. You are a decade old now, and there is not much the League has left to teach you. So, in one week's time you will be going to stay with your Father.â Mother said bluntly.Â
Damianâs brows creased together, âFor how long?âÂ
Mother looked at him with authority as the next in line for the Demonâs Head, âFor the foreseeable future.âÂ
âWhat!â Damian stood in indignation, âMother that's unreasonable, how could you make me-âÂ
âIt is an order Damain.â Mother said with finality.Â
Damian frowned, âAnd what of Danyal then? He is Fatherâs child as well, I doubt he would sit by knowing he has another child here.â
âAn intelligent conclusion.â Mother praised, âThat is why you and Danyal will have a final test, the victor will be the one who is sent to your Father.â Damianâs eyes lit up at the concept, Danyal never talked about how he trained or what skills he best utilized, other than once slipping that he prefers to use katanas too, Damian did not know much of Danyal skills. This was finally Damianâs chance to see how capable of a fighter Danyal is. Despite whoever won, Damian was sure, even without knowing his father yet, that he would come back to retrieve the other.
âWhen will the spar be a mother?â Damian asked.Â
âIn 4 days, you will be expected in the main courtyard by noon.â Mother said dismissively.Â
The day came both faster and slower than Damian wouldâve liked. Wearing his usual gear, and his swords by his side he headed towards the field mother had instructed him to be at. Damian had waited in anticipation for this day, making sure all his swords were properly cleaned and sharpened. Of course they always were, but he had taken extra care that they would be in their best condition. His attire had been carefully selected by himself, a measure he usually wouldnât take.Â
Danyal and Damian stood facing each other, waiting for the signal to begin. Mother and Grandfather watched them closely from their spots in the audience, as the two exchanged blows, swords slidinging across each other, dodges and blocks, evasive flips, feint attacks, Danyal punched him in the gut once when Damian hadnât been prepared. Damian let the battle engulf his senses, body moving in flow with his weapon, switching seamlessly between offense and defense until Damian found the perfect opening for an attack and he took it, knowing he would be named victorious.Â
Damianâs katana sunk into Danyalâs chest, a gasp of pain escaping the other boy, as he looked down at the point of impact. Confusion filtered across his face for only a moment, and before Damian could question it, Danyalâs expression slowly morphed into fear as Mother and Grandfather approached them.Â
âDamian, congratulations are in order.â His Mother praised him, stepping in between him and Danyal. âI knew from the beginning you would come out victorious.âÂ
âThank you, Mother.â Damian tried to look at Danyal. âWhat now?âÂ
âWe will be taking your brother to the Lazarus Pits, and let Fate decree any value to his life.â Mother explained, turning to Danyal and pulling Damianâs sword out of his chest, Danyal yelped in pain.Â
Damian wondered if Danyal had been hurt during their fight.Â
Damian bent down to load Danyal onto his back and carry him to the mystic waters and let him heal so he could join him at Fatherâs later. Perhaps Father would not be as keen as Mother on fostering their brotherhood, and they could train and fight together like they always talked about.Â
âDamian.â Danyal croaked out lowly, if his face wasnât already positioned near Damianâs ear he likely wouldnât have heard.Â
âShh.â Damian chided, âMother will notice.âÂ
âDamian.â Danyal called again, âPromise, you wonât forget about me.âÂ
Checking to see that Mother was still occupied in a conversation with one of the servants, âDonât worry, I'm going to take you with me. Or Iâll come back to get you.âÂ
 âPromise.â Danyal asked again.Â
Damian sighed, Danyal could be so stubborn sometimes, even with strange requests âFine, I promise.â he rolled his eyes. Danyal didnât say anything after that, instead resting his head on Damianâs shoulder.Â
âPlace him in the waters, Damian.â Mother instructed.Â
Danyalâs body floated in the waters lifelessly for a bit, and Damian wondered why nothing was happening. And then suddenly, as if it were the mouth of some vicious beast, a gaping vortex circled around Danyal swallowing his body whole. Just as suddenly as it had erupted, the vortex disappeared and the waters returned to a deathly still seconds later. Everyone surrounding the waters watched in anticipation, but when nothing happened and enough time had passed, everyone headed back to their tasks.Â
Mother stayed for a moment longer, âIt seems even Fate, too, was eager to be rid of you.â she muttered, before heading off.Â
Damian was the only one left there, waiting for Danyal to walk out and tease Damian for getting worried that it was taking so long. But the sun was beginning to set, and the waters had not moved at all, and there was no sign of Danyal.Â
âYoung Master, Lady Talia says that you should return to your chambers.â A servant stood by the gates holding a plate of food for him. Or was it for Danyal? There was only one serving. Â
Damian turned to the servant, and he asked in a voice shakier than he had been expecting of himself, âWhy hasnât Danyal come out yet?âÂ
The servant seemed taken aback by the question, before their face morphed into something sadder that Damian didnât understand. âYoung Master Danyal will not be returning to us.â They explained softly.Â
âWhy not?â Damian demanded, confused and angry. His eyes were beginning to burn.Â
The servant hesitated before answering him, âBecause Young Master Danyal is dead.âÂ
âWhat difference should that make, people die all the time?âÂ
âIt is as easy for the dead to return as your grandfather may make it seem, Young Master.â The servant spoke again, their voice gentle and tone careful. âUsually when people die they are gone for good, and they donât get to come back. Not even with the Lazarus Waters. Second chances do not come for free, after all.âÂ
Damian let the words sink in. Danyal- Danyal wasnât coming back?Â
It was dark out now, almost the time the two of them usually met on the rooftop. Danyal would be waiting for him there, like he was every night.Â
âYou're lying.â He accused the servant, as he ran to his room, food left forgotten as Damian quickly made his way onto the familiar rooftops.Â
Damian waited there, the servantâs words echoing in his ears at every second Danyal didnât show up. An hour passed, and then two. And Damian considered for the first time that the servant had been telling him the truth.Â
For the first time since he made his first visit to the roof of his room, Damian al-Ghul sat unaccompanied.Â
After six years of carrying out various missions as an assassin, Damian al-Ghul cried when he learned what death meant.Â
For the first time in his life, Damian al-Ghul cried when he realized he was alone. Â
âWeâre here.â Red Robin announced, as the plane landed silently about 15 miles away from base like they had planned the night before.Â
âOracle, testing comms and visuals,â Nightwing spoke into his earpiece.Â
âAll good on my end.â Her voice echoed in all of their ears.Â
âOkay, just like we discussed, Robin and Red Hood will head to the surveillance room and get a location for where the experimentation is taking place. Nightwing and I will be on standby until the information is provided, Red Robin collects samples and information in the time that we have.â Father went over the plan again.Â
Robin stealthy led the two of them through the LoAâs familiar layout, and the mission went smoothly. Within the next two hours they had the location of the experimentation site. It was on base, but a further location, so Nightwing and Batman headed there, ready to collect whatever information they could. Downloading the files for the surveillance and sending the access over to Oracle, their job should be done, and they were set to wait at the rendezvous point until further orders, or back up was requested.Â
âWhere are you going, Brat? Weâre supposed to head that way.â Red Hood chastised as Damian took them off course.Â
âThen go that way, if you wanna be such a goody-goody.â Damian shot back easily. Knowing the route to his destination easily. Damian kept to the least used route.Â
âWhatâs with you, today? Pissy about not getting to see your Mommy?â Red Hood snarked, still following behind him.Â
Damian wasnât going to justify that with a response. The green of the Lazarus Waters came into view. A shiver went up his spine but he ignored it.
âRobin. What the hell are we doing here?â Red Hood demanded, eyeing the familiar green with contempt. Damian bent down to pick a handful of stay dandelions from the corner of the unused ally, and easily jumped over the gates surrounding the water. âDamian.â Jason hissed, âWhat are you doing?âÂ
âRelax.â Damian sighed, bending down near the waters, âI just came to give my greetings to⌠someone.â To his brother. Danyal was is his brother. Despite the mask hiding his face, Damian could see Jasonâs posture soften.Â
âMake it quick.â Jason huffed, letting Damian have some pseudo-privacy by turning his back to him. Damian set the flowers he had picked near the edge of the water, only noticing that the temperature had dropped when the wind blew a slight chill at the exposed skin of his face. It wasnât temperatures Damian couldnât handle, Gotham was often dreary and chilly even in her summers. But they werenât in Gotham. They were in the Middle East, where they would consider themselves unlucky when the winters got this cold.Â
âHood, do you-â Damian was cut off by the loud acidic bubbling of the previously calm green waters.Â
âWhat the-â Red Hood balked, turning around alarmed.Â
Damian backed away in alarm, the edge of the waters expanding to swallowing the flowers he had laid down. The two brothers could do nothing but watch in suspense as the waters started swirling into a vortex garnering attention they had been trying to avoid. Just as suddenly as it had started the waters returned to their previously calm state, only for the surface to be broken by what looked like a young child, trying desperately to keep himself afloat and get to land.Â
Damian and Red Hood were too busy holding off the assault from the small force the assassins had managed to form together to help the child. The second either of them turned their back to the assaulters, the assassins would take the opening to finish them. By the time they had dealt with their attackers the boy had already brought himself to shore, hacking up water.Â
Familiar choppy black hair, and blue eyes Damian could never forget. âDanyal.â Damian found himself gasping, body frozen not from the cold.Â
âDonât mean to ruin your meet cute, but look like they brought their friends.â Red Hood warned as more assassins surrounded them.Â
âWe need to leave. Now.â Damian told him decisively.Â
âWow I never wouldâve guessed.â Red Hood snarked back.Â
âCall for an extraction.â Damian huffed annoyed, blocking an attack from the left. There werenât many well trained members currently aware of them, but they knew better than to wait for backup to show up.Â
âRed Robin, whatâs your eta to the jet? Team 1 needs an emergency extraction.â Oracle spoke through the main line of comms.Â
âI can be there in 10 minutes.â Red Robin responded easily, âWhatâs the situation?â
âWeâve been made.â Red Hood reported back disarming his attacker and knocking them out.Â
âWill likely need medical attention.â Damian added, looking back at Danyal, who only now seemed to be registering his surroundings.Â
âWhat happened?â Nightwing asked, concerned at Damianâs statement.Â
âNot for us, for our new little stowaway.â Red Hood explained finishing off the last of the assassin, before turning around to face Danyal.
âExplain.â Batman demanded
âPerhaps now is not the best time or place for that, Father.â Damian snapped back.Â
Danyal stood scarily still from the bay of the Lazarus Waters, wet and dripping, and despite the chilly temperature and his wet clothes he didnât seem cold. If Jason had not tried to approach Danyal as well, Damian wouldâve thought he was simply a figment of his imagination.Â
âHey, kid.â Red Hood put his arms out to show he meant no threat. âDo you know how you got here?â He tried to make his voice soft and approachable but the voice modulator of his helmet was not doing him any favors. Â
Danyal didnât respond, eyeing the both of them carefully. They let him, not making any movements that may scare him. The world seems to go still around Damian. Go colder.Â
âIâm in the jet, heading your way.â Red Robin reported over the comms.
âWeâre coming to find you too.â Nightwing added, Father presumably with him.Â
Neither Jason or Damian made any moves.Â
âTeam 1, do you copy?â Oracle asked when neither of them sent a signal for receiving the message.Â
Damian wondered what he should do? How was he supposed to approach Danyal, and begin to explain what was happening? Damian wasnât even sure what was happening.Â
âTeam 1?â Father repeated.Â
Do something, Damian.
âCopy.â Red Hood clicked into the comms and everything rushed into motion.Â
At Red Hoodâs response and the rapid movements of the wind at the approaching jet approaching overhead, Danyal dashed away alarmed.Â
âWait-â Damian called, running after him. But Danyal only seemed more distressed at being chased. He ran through small crevices Damian was too large to fit through, trying to deter him. But Damian followed regardless. Finally catching up to him where he knew that alleyway to come to an end, Damian caught sight of him, reaching out to grab his arm. Only for it to fall through as if nothing was there.Â
As if Danyal wasnât really there.Â
After the failed attempt at contact from Damian, Danyal was only able to get so far before he seemed to trip, his foot catching on something that Damian couldnât see.Â
Why had Damianâs hand just gone through him like that?
Damian began to question whether Danyal truly was in front of him or if it was just some sort of illusion. Damian was quickly reassured of the validity of his vision when a sharp rock Danyal launched let blood drip on his skin. The hiss of pain was real. And so was Danyal.
Damian didnât stop his domino from falling off his face, from the rockâs impact. Danyal stared at him. âDonât tell me you donât recognize me?â Damian tried to laugh, but it sounded pathetic.Â
Danyal analyzed Damianâs features, confusion washing over him. It made sense, the Damian Danyal had known was a 10 years old assassin, not a 17 year old Robin. Danyal was smart, smarter than Damian had been. Damian waited for him to figure it out.
But the world did not wait. Red Hood, Nightwing, and Batman dropped in from various rooftops, as the jet hovered loudly above them. Spooked by the sudden appearances, Danyal quickly started backing away.Â
âExcretion ready. Preparing Medbay.â Red Robin reported.Â
âI was wondering when the news would reach you, Beloved.â Another familiar voice grabbed their attention. Damian looked to the sound to see Mother with at least 10 of her personal guards staring them down. Although Damian couldnât see the others, he knew they had been surrounded.Â
âTalia.â Father hissed, a cold anger in his voice.Â
Damian's eyes shot back to Danyal who looked like he was trying to find a way to make an escape, exhaustion seeping through him. Deciding to take his chance, Damian approached him while Mother was occupied with Father.Â
âWho are you?â Danyal asked him, hesitantly, trying to keep the distance between him and Damian.Â
âI promised I would come back for you, didnât I?â Damian said in lieu of an answer.
Danyalâs eyes widened in recognition but before he had the chance to respond, an arrow was launched landing between them. Looking at the source, it was Mother. At the signal attack, all the other guards swarmed in from their positions and started attacking. Damian, blocking a sword, aimed to slash his side, before another sword came for his shoulder.Â
Occupied with his two attackers, Damian didnât notice Danyal trying to escape by climbing the side of the brick building. Fortunately, Mother still hadnât noticed him yet thanks to their surroundings, and Danyalâs insistence to stay in the shadows. Danyalâs progression was decelerating, the weight of his still wet clothes and exhaustion slowing him down.Â
Damian tried to keep an eye on him so he could follow after, once he dealt with his attackers. Disarming both of them and knocking them unconscious, Damian was able to turn around just in time to notice Danyal on the brink of unconsciousness, and losing his grip on the stones he was using to climb. Damian moved quickly, just in time to catch Danyal as he fell and his eyes rolled back. With Danyal in his arms, Damian only registered the on coming projectile without enough time to dodge or block. Damian braced himself for the hit, using his body to shield Danyal as much as he could.Â
Only for a familiar black cape to flutter in front of him, blocking the attack before it hit either of them. âGo,â Father ordered, tipping his head towards the jet, âWeâll follow.âÂ
-
âSo basically, correct me if Iâm wrong,â Steph started incredulously, âDamian had a twin brother that died, they dunked him in the pit waters but then he didnât come back. So, they were like âwelp, lets tell no one about this, everâ. Except the water ends up literally throwing him out when Damian goes back and does this huge water show grand entrance thing. And now we have another 10 year old Wayne child.â Steph summarized arms moving wildly. If there wasnât a kid that looked a lot like Damian lying unconscious in the bed two feet away from her, and the body cam footage from both Damian and Jason, Steph wouldâve thought they were pranking her. Though, she hadnât entrily ruled that out yet either.Â
Tim nodded in conformation, leaning back causally on his chair.
âYou were gone for 36 hours.â Cass added exasperatedly.Â
Damian still hadnât said anything other than explain who exactly Danyal was. They were twins, apparently, and they had been forced into a battle to the death a few days before Damian had been brought to the manor. He hadnât told them why, but Steph suspected it was for some stupid successor business. Some of the otherâs had tried to get more information out of Damian, demanding answers for why he never said anything before, never told any of them, why there werenât any files of Danyal in the Leagueâs databases. But Damian hadnât answered any of them, so they had been forced to give it a rest- for now. Looking back, Steph could see the signs that Damian was dealing with grief when he had first come to the manor, but no one had been looking for that, and it had gotten swept under âweird assassin cult childâ behavior.Â
It had been about an hour and a half since the jet had landed in the cave, and Steph, as a certified medical practitioner, had been called in for an emergency. She had thought it was strange that Oracle hadnât specified who, and now Steph understood why.Â
Danyal didnât seem injured, other than a lower than average body temperature and a slightly slower heart rate, which was likely due to the body temperature, he seemed in relatively normal health. That was if he hadnât been a 10 year old who had been marinating in Lazarus Water for seven years. Most of the bats had experience with Lazarus Water, and it had never been pleasant. But they hadnât been in the prime years of their physical and mental development, and at most had been in the pits for an hour.Â
Steph, Cass, Tim and Damian were in the medical room with Danyal. Jason had gone to his apartment, and said he would be back later, and to let him know if anything happened. Bruce had changed and gone straight up stairs, not taking the news of having a second kid who Talia had hidden from him and a second kid who had died very well. Dick had stayed for a while but he had an emergency work call and had to leave. Duke was still patrolling, since it was earlier in the day, but was being kept up to date on all news thanks to Oracle. Â
Danyal was due to wake up any moment, and none of them knew how to feel about it. Not liking the morbid atmosphere of the whole manor, Steph decided to change topics. âDid Cassie tell you about what Conner and Bart did last week?â
Tim turned to face her happy for the distraction, Cass humored her with an intrigued look. âWhat?â
âOkay so basically- it was so cringe-â Steph let herself laugh âThey were at the mall right. The one near Mount Justice, yknow-â
â-yeah itâs the same one they go to all the time.â Tim interjected, rolling his eyes.Â
âRight, so-â The door opened, as Alfred walked in, cutting off her story but not unwelcome.Â
âYouâve all been in here for quite some time, so I brought you some snacks. Sandwiches, fresh cookies, and water, juice and milk to drink. All your favorites, do indulge.â The old butler explained, rolling the cart through the door.Â
âThanks, Alfie.â Tim went to grab a glass of water, and a sandwich.Â
âAnd anything for our newest addition?â Alfred questioned.Â
âHeâs not awake yet.â Damian said quietly, sipping at a glass of warm milk. Like a weirdo.Â
âIs that so?â Alfred said with a thoughtful drawl to his voice, as he walked closer to the kid. âHmâŚâ He stroked his chin animatedly, slowly bringing himself closer to examine the boyâs face, but still keeping a comfortable distance. Steph was about to question what he was doing, only to see the boyâs eyes shoot open, and stare back at Alfred like a deer caught in headlights. Alfred straightened, as Danyal seemed to realize that he had been discovered.Â
âWhat? How long was he faking being asleep?â Tim asked, baffled.Â
â56 minutes.â Cass answered, easily.Â
âWait- you knew this whole time?â Steph asked betrayed, only for Cass to smile back cheekily.Â
Damian didnât say anything as Danyal sat up in his bed slowly, examining every one in the room. Steph tried to make herself seem non threatening but stayed ready in case the kid lashed out, not knowing how he would react. If it was anything like how Damian had been during his early days, it would pay to be ready.Â
After a long moment of no one saying anything, Tim decided to prompt, âSo, howâre you feeling, kid?âÂ
Danyal didnât respond right away, instead watching Tim, Steph and Cass from his spot on the bed. Steph was beginning to wonder if this was another case, like Cass, where the kid had never been taught how to speak. Danyal opened his mouth hesitantly, looking over at Steph hesitantly, then Damian before answering.Â
âCringe.â There was a flat blunt honestness to his tone that added to the sudden comedy of the situation. Damian choked on his milk, and the room burst into laughter at the unexpected response. Danyal looked a little embarrassed at the reaction, but there was still a small smile on his face.Â
Maybe this wouldnât be so bad afterall.Â
âDo you want some?â Damian asked, breaking a cookie in half and offering Danyal a piece.Â
The younger boy took it, curiously, âWhat is it?âÂ
Damian took a bite, chewing it before responding, âA cookie.â
âCookie.â Danyal repeated thoughtfully, before taking a little nibble of it. His eyes widened at the taste, âWoah.âÂ
âThereâs plenty more of those, Young Master Danyal, Iâm glad to see you enjoy them.â Alfred smiled happily at the reaction.Â
âReally?â He asked hopefully. Steph tried to remember if Damian had been this cute when he had first come to the Manor. âWho are you?â Danyal asked again after a moment.Â
âIâm Alfred Pennyworth, you can call me Alfred. I'm the butler at Wayne Manor, your fatherâs home where we currently are.â Alfred took a pause before speaking again, âNow, I hope you all will excuse me as I go fetch Master Bruce, heâs been quite excited to meet you, Young Master Danyal.â
