“Approved by the comics code authority”, Spider-Man: Across The Spider-Verse picks up where Spider-Man: Into The Spiderverse broadly left off. Sure, a few years have passed but things are basically the same. Miles Morales is still Spider-Man. He still hasn’t told his folks about it and he’s still fighting crime. However, a new foe has arrived in the shape of The Spot. A being who can straddle the multiverses at will, he’s out to exact revenge on Spider-Man for an act he has yet to commit. Elsewhere Gwen, she of Spider-Gwen fame, is struggling with her uber-determined police chief dad. Intent on bringing Spider-Gwen to justice he is shocked to discover that Gwen is actually Spider-Gwen, all before she skips off into the Spider-verse to do what Spider people do., i.e. thwart crime and spin webs in the different timelines.  So, when https://is.gd/VCdYYR

On what acting teaches about life
The other day, I was listening to a podcast called In The Envelope, where Daniel Kaluuya, BAFTA and Academy Award winning actor, was interviewed.
As the interviewer and Kaluuya warmed up to the crafty conversation, a nuanced and self-aware perspective soon got pointed out, an approach which I appreciated very much because not only did it show how acting can be done but also how life can be lived.
An actor is an instrument for a given character, and it is almost entirely up to the artist to reveal that character. Almost, because there is a director, and there are producers and other actors within the scene who influence the unfolding of the story.
But this equation calculates with the value of actors, and in this case, the value of Kaluuya, who is very logical and professional about what he needs in order to bring a character to life.
Sometimes, and especially when we speak of an actor as an instrument, one could think an actor is a passive object who is entirely in the hands of everyone around him, on set. In some ways it is true, an actor is a pleaser of the needs of the story, an actor is what moves the story forward, therefore, his playground is within the laws and physics of the script. Thus he is a very active and alive element, but as Kaluuya points out, an actor is not a creator. An actor is an interpreter. What distinguishes him from painters, writers, sculptors is that he isn't making up something completely new, but that he is interpreting whatever that's there, in the script or on the face of the scene partner.
He knows his backstory but doesn't put too much emphasis on it every time he gets in front of the camera. I'm exaggerating here, but for instance, he won't hold onto the character's nursery experiences as he is about propose to the love of his life. I assume he wouldn't even bother thinking about the nursery if it wasn't mentioned in the script, but that is just my opinion. And it is because of this — backstory is what happened to the character. Backstory is not who he is in the moment. It had built him up to the present but here, when the opportunity comes to make a decision, it is his own choice which defines who he is. Backstory is not what he needs in order to act, but a scene where there is something happening. An opportunity.
Quoted:
“I’m using who I am to show you who I’m not.”
Because a movie has limits regarding the length and the time frame of the protagonist, we follow only the important parts. Kaluuya says,
“The decision the character makes defines the backstory." The backstory, thus, is unfolding in front of us through watching the character's actions in the present.
What I love about Kaluuya's perspective is that it makes decision-making less complicated — within the arts or in life. There is no need to take so much with you at all times. You can jump off the plane because the parachute is there. Your safety in the performance is secured in the character, who is defined by his actions. Thus it is granted that you will act in the character's shoes. It is the audience's job to connect the dots — your job, as an actor, is to live.
I think this can be applied to life as well, especially when we are prone to overthinking. Perhaps there is opportunity for a new job or a new project, but we say no, although our spirit is longing for change. We desire something new but when the new comes we are picky and with the flick of our pinky finger, we sing good-bye in some unbothered tune, and go back to the same old patterns, secretly peeking back towards that interesting stranger who might have been a good friend to us. Then a day later we go and complain to our journal that we don't know what we want in life.
“I’m using who I am to show you who I’m not.” Applying this thought, one could move past fear, insecurity, jealousy and trust-issues, in that one will behave according to values such as self-love, forgiveness, trust, respect and unconditional love.
One's conversations over coffee with friends will be less about dreading the unfairness of life and rather truly listening to the person across the table, because one's ears have been cleared of negativity and self-loathing.
It is paralyzing to only pay attention to what could go wrong. It makes us cautious, conservative little creatures, our lives conserved inside a bottle with so little oxygen. Preserve positon, preserve the known past, not dipping into anything new further then the big toe.
"I'm using who I am to show you who I'm not." I'm using this one life I have, with this one body and mind I have, to show you what I believe in. On every turning point, I am responsible for how I act and through my actions only can you tell who I am.
To care so much about an image is of course unsustainable and, frankly, unnecessary. What I'm trying to put into words is that how one lives is one's own making. Life, and not the image, is what's important. Self-awareness and sharp honesty is required to steer the wheel well, and although we don't always choose where we go or what happens to us on the road, our identity should not be shaken as what happens to us is not who we are. It is how we react to life is where one can find clues about the values by which we are governed. And often, after enough time has passed and one can see that the results of a series of one's actions had hurt them more than they helped, one will perhaps discover that the values they've been living by are misleading.
So then what? Well, what. I can only tell you what I am telling myself these days. You might have been fearful, so then, be brave. You might have been hurt in the past by someone but that time has passed. So then, cut the chord and don't feed yourself the emotions of a bad memory. Move on.
The past is the past. The future is yet to come. Where we are is where we can be only, solely, and it is here, in the current of the moment where we can overwrite the past, as in, the past no longer deciding for us.
“I’m using who I am to show you who I’m not.”
It is up to us.

I would tell people it was racism and they wouldn't believe me. But when I told them my Irish agent said it, they were like oh is it?"
It's amazing how people without any lived experience, assume the power to determine what is and isn't racist. And only believe it's existence when it's validated by another white person.
"You're seen as too biased because you have the symptoms."
Food for thought by @danielkaluuya
