Ecuadorians voted against drilling for oil in a protected area of the Amazon, an important decision that will require the state oil company to end its operations in a region that’s home to two uncontacted tribes and is a hotspot of biodiversity.

Yasuni National Park is inhabited by the Tagaeri and Taromenani, who live in self-isolation. In 1989, it was designated a world biosphere reserve by the United Nations Educational, Scientific and Cultural Organization, also known as UNESCO. Encompassing a surface area of over 1 million hectares (2.5 million acres), it boasts 610 species of birds, 139 species of amphibians, and 121 species of reptiles. At least three species are endemic.

With over 90% of the ballots counted by early Monday, around 6 in 10 Ecuadorians rejected the oil exploration in Block 43, situated within Yasuni.

The outcome represents a significant blow to Ecuadorian President Guillermo Lasso, who advocated for oil drilling, asserting that its revenues are crucial to the country’s economy. State oil company Petroecuador will be required to dismantle its operations in the coming months.

The referendum took place alongside the presidential election, which will be decided in a runoff between leftist candidate Luisa González and right-wing contender Daniel Noboa. The country is experiencing political turmoil following the assassination of one of the candidates, Fernando Villavicencio.

¿Votaremos por el mal menor?

Se ha hablado tanto en estos días de por quién vamos a votar.

Se dice que Luisa es la continuidad del populismo del S.XXI y que volveremos a los tiempos del autoritarismo y totalitarismo que marco ese periodo. En mi opinión es la peor época de Ecuador y Latinoamérica. Desde mi criterio, he visto un cambio extremo en su campaña y ya no es la Luisa de la primera vuelta; su binomio fue opacado por sus expresiones en medios de comunicación, no fue la mejor arma que el correísmo pensaba que tenía y les jugo en contra.

Además, vuelven a demostrar que con su tipo de campaña política basada en crear el caos, la confusión, la contraposición, el rival y sin atacar, no pueden hacer política, sus propuestas se pierden en el odio y la mentira.

También, la política fue considerada cómo lo peor por su constante ataque a la clase política, ellos no son mejor que la partidocrácia que ellos atacaban, no fueron los salvadores cómo nos querían hacer pensar. La pregunta fundamental es ¿queremos volver a esa época? o ¿queremos avanzar?. Tenemos varios espejos que podemos ver a dónde a llevado el totalitarismo como: Cuba, Venezuela y Nicaragua.

Por otro lado, esta Daniel. No hay mucho que criticar u opinar, han dicho que es la copia de Lasso aunque no lo creo, cada quién tiene su opinión. Sé que no somos un país con la cultura de analizar las propuestas políticas de cada candidato, pero les invito a tomarse el tiempo y reflexionar cada propuesta y generar una opinión más formada.

Recordemos que, Lasso hizo campaña por mucho tiempo y nos hizo creer que él era el anticorreísmo y la mejor opción, no dejó que otros líderes o actores surjan como otra propuesta. Desde mi perspectiva creo que nos defraudo a todos.

Daniel es un tipo joven que tiene una forma de hacer política sin atacar un tanto soft, dándonos nuevos aires para hacer política.

Ahora volvemos a tener la opción de elegir entre el correísmo y un Noboa, después de 17 años y con ello cuestiono . ¿Qué habría pasado si Noboa le hubiese ganado a Correa? ¿Será que el Ecuador hubiese estado mejor o peor o estamos destinados al fracaso cómo país?.

No tengo la certeza de que si Noboa sea el mal menor para el Ecuador, lo que sé es que Ecuador ya no debe seguir en una era populista, de confrontaciones, de ver quién es el enemigo.

Reitero han pasado 17 años para que el destino nos vuelva a poner en un 15 de octubre y podamos decidir y tomar la mejor decisión.
