It'd be a shame if I didn't dress up as at least ONE Ewan McGregor character.

Obi-Wan is probably the only genuine costumey character, but in the very likely event that I can't find the materials to do his outfit, I need a backup.

horror stuff I've enjoyed recently

I just want to say that there are so many tragic things about Dan Torrance in Doctor Sleep. But the one that really stands out to me is that his "inner library" is The Overlook.

Rose the Hat has a beautiful and extravagant mansion; it's as old, gorgeous, and well maintained as she is. Abra has her room, the only place that she really possesses and has control over at her age; the ceiling filled with stars and the promise of expansion as she grows up.

And then there's Dan's library, his mind is shaped like The Overlook, every thought, memory, and experience is stored in a place that he fears, hates, and cannot forget. Specifically, in the room where his dad would work. Possibly a room he liked before 'the incident'. But now the typewriter is eternally waiting and no one is coming back to it.

The hotel traumatized him so completely that everything he knows, every experience he's had in his life from before, during, and after the events of The Shining are stored neatly away in its terrifying halls. Every good memory must be revisited inside that sprawling, predatory, beast of a place.

His version is tamed, sure, but even without blood flowing out of an elevator or the twins at the end of the hallway, every time he turned a corner, surely he'd remember that at one point they were there.

Dan's mind is not a palace, formed in reverence for the things he knows and the years he's lived. Nor is it his safe space, that he can customize and manipulate to his liking, filled with possibilities. His mind is decorated with trauma and terror. And it frames his thoughts and all of his future experiences.

His mind is his personal hell, or was until he tames it, sobers up, and turns it into a place that he can walk through every day. Telling himself that he has changed it and made it different. That as long as he maintains control, he's safe walking the halls.

What a tragic glimpse into his life.

no one will ever understand how much i love the shining. unfortunately i watched the movie first when i was ten and read the book after the same year. i recently reread the book and omfg i love it so much. i’ve watched the movie more times than i can count. this is definitely in my top ten, maybe even top five, movies ever. i genuinely cry at the end of the movie every single time bc of how amazing it is. while i dont like how the movie’s so different from the book but viewing it as a separate thing i love it so much. ive watched so many videos on it and have dedicated so much time to learning about it. i just love it so much

and i also love the sequel doctor sleep like i read it for the first time last year and i genuinely couldn’t put it down. plus the movie adaptation with ewan mcgregor (again as something separate) it’s just all so good and i love it so much

summary: how sharing a simple domestic life with dan would probably be like.

After some months dating, you agree to try living together and see how it goes. He is not so convinced when you first try to talk him into it, but after three years sober —and your insistence that everything would be fine—, he finally says yes to moving into your house.

At first, he didn't get used to it. He walks in a world softer and safer than what he usually did before being sober, for once there are no sharp edges and he doesn't dislike it at all.

Anxiety and insecurities from his shifts at the Rivington dissolve the moment he looks at the clock hanging on the wall and thinks is almost time to go back home to you.

He cannot seem to choose which are his favorite kisses now — good morning kisses or goodnight kisses.

He feels brought back to life every time your lips pepper his face with soft pecks all over his face in the mornings, and every little attempt of you to get out of bed seems impossible now, but there's no time to complain when you’re being loved.

You were aware of the fact Dan had a gift, though he hadn't opened up completely about it yet, you were patient and never forced the topic on him — one of the many reasons he was so fond of you.

The fear of you finding him spooky or creepy because of his shining was always haunting him in the back of his mind every time he shared a room with you in your small house. You, on the other hand, were always attentive of his little shining outbursts, fascinated by how much he understood you though you always tried to be ahead of things.

It came in handy when you couldn't remember where you left that sweater your granny gifted you on snow days or when you forgot to stop at the convenience store to buy more milk, you would get home to find him folding the clothes you forgot to take out of the washing machine before leaving to work — but there were negative aspects.

Nightmares were less frequent, yet, the probability never lowered to zero. He would wake up abruptly at midnight, sweaty and shivering, babbling about demons you couldn't understand — and frankly didn't ask about. You could only shy away some of your sleepy state and think of how to make him feel safe again.

Nights were somber pools of self-deprecating thoughts before drifting off to sleep, where he seeked the calm of nothingness. Now, as you cuddle under the sheets, he seeks the comfort of your warmth and the soothing touch of your fingertips on his scalp, easing all his worries goodbye.

On days that are not so busy, he would wake up to the smell of coffee or the sound of your singing in the shower. Clashing cooking utensils was almost the norm. He was an awful cook and you were no chef either, but the bliss of sharing a table with you made the whole morning ritual a good reason to be alive.

And he doesn't mutter any thank you's after he finishes, but when he washes the dishes, you can hear how content he hums sweet tunes and it makes you smile to see how happy he is compared to when you first met him.

He would occasionally ask for you to lend him things just to brush his hands with yours, sometimes ridiculously near him, like the remote next to him —it amuses you—, and you silently wait for the moment he pulls you into a hug once you reach out to him, sitting you in his lap to watch T.V.

He had no dreams before you, nothing to hold on to, living for the day in ragged T-shirts, he found beauty in the ordinary, in the simple quiet life he was sharing with you.

Author's note: So, I realized there is little to nothing content about Dan and he's frankly one of my favorite of Ewan's characters. This reader was thought as a non-shining reader. I'll probably write more on him if this is well received.

Dan as a kid self soothed quite a lot so if your a Regressor who sucks their thumb to comfort yourself he will not stop you, he used to do it himself.

Very protective of you. Unfortunately with his shine just being around him can make you a target so you bet he is going to make sure you are safe!!!

Again as a kid Dan didn't really speak, not after everything that happened at the overlook hotel... Sooo he knows how to find other ways of communicating if you can't or don't like to speak when regressed.

He's a light sleeper so if you ever need something in the night he's on it!!!

^ He also knows how to handle nightmares and PTSD.

His voice is very calming and I fully believe that he'd be amazing at reading bedtime stories, or just reading stories in general!!!

Sometimes if you were having a hard time sleeping or calming down he finds himself humming or singing gently to aid you in falling asleep.

He makes sure he stays completely sober. He stays far away from anything like that.

He is very comforting, even when not doing anything in particular his presence is just comforting.

He will ruffle your hair and if you complain that he's "ruined your hair" he absolutely will do it again, whilst laughing. 😂

If the true knot and Rose think they are getting anywhere near you they have another thing coming which they soon realise because Dan is not letting them try to hurt you, not a chance.

He can communicate with you through your mind so if you guys are ever in public and you're regressing he doesn't need to watch what he's saying as only you can hear <3
