The Mosley Review: Saturday Night

As a theatre kid, this film was a cathartic experience. I vividly remember the intense feeling of excitement, anxiety and readiness to perform in a auditorium packed to the rafters with over three hundred people. The hours leading up to the curtain rise, you are feverishly combing over every line of dialogue, tracing every step of your blocking and making sure every costume fits and each change was seamless. There's no thrill like live theatre and that is what this film captures on another level. Many have wanted to do a "making of" or origin story of Saturday Night Live, but this film decided to do something even better than a standard biopic. From the moment the film begins, you are both a fly on the wall and in the shoes of the man that created what has now lived on for 50 historical years. It changed broadcast television and the world of comedy forever and it wasn't without its doubts and difficulties. This film captures that fateful night and the 90 minutes leading up the iconic opening in break neck speed and a pulse pounding way that was truly unexpected and welcomed.

Gabriel LaBelle was fantastic as the ambitious, passionate and stressed out comedic genius, Lorne Michaels. I loved that no matter what, he was on task the entire time and even though the pressure steadily increased throughout the night, he was ready to deal with anything. I felt his anxiety, determination and heart as Gabriel brings to life that inner creative force of the visionary. Rachel Sennott was awesome as his wife, Rosie Shuster. The two of them had a working relationship that was both filled with love, trust and friendship. They worked so well off of each other even if their relationship wasn't traditional. Cooper Hoffman was great as his co-producer, Dick Ebersol and loved his loyalty to Lorne. He was sort of the balance in the chaos that set him straight and told him the truth when he needed to hear it. They had a great chemistry and it was a highlight of the film. Tommy Dewey was hilarious, witty and strongly sarcastic as Michael O'Donoghue. I loved his quick insults and humor that felt modern and revolutionary in its delivery. He has an amazing standoff scene with the "Standards and Practices" editor that was darkly offensive, sharp and hilarious. Willem Dafoe is no slouch and as David Tebet, he delivers as the main NBC network executive Lorne has to prove himself to. The tension of broadcasting something untested was truly highlighted in their scenes together. J.K. Simmons is like a good luck charm to every film and as the legendary Milton Berle, he was truly having fun as the rightfully larger than life entertainer.
Now the biggest thing this film captures is the night the original cast of SNL prepared to take the stage and all the high jinks that ensued before cameras rolled. Cory Michael Smith was absolutely brilliant and spot as Chevy Chase. He captured his comedic timing, wit and charm as the leading man in the room. He instantly would draw the most focus when in attendance of meetings or even just hanging out with his fellow cast members. Ella Hunt was sweet as Gilda Radner. She nailed her shy and loveable personality as you see the start of a love triangle between her and another classic cast member. Dylan O'Brien was outstadning as Dan Aykroyd as he pulled off his iconic speech pattern and cadence. I loved that he highlighted the flirtatious nature of Dan and his ever expansive attention to detail in one particular sketch. Emily Fairn was great as Laraine Newman and she looked almost exactly like her. She was very spunky and quirkie. Matt Wood was fantastic and unpredictable as John Belushi. He looked and sounded just like John as he nailed his personality and his devotion to comedy. He was a troublsome person and he brings that to life in many scenes. Kim Matula was great as Jane Curtin and she highlights her striking sense of humor and line delivery in one particular scene in the film. Lamorne Morris was perfection as the legendary Garrett Morris. Lamorne is known for his brilliant impressions, but he becomes Garrett instantly the moment he moves and speaks. Nicholas Braun was a complete chameleon in his portrayal of both Andy Kaufman and Jim Henson. He disappeared into both characters and he nailed Andy's childlike charm and comedic timing and definitely brought to life the soft spoken and kind nature of Henson. What a wonderful cast.

The score by the wonderful Jon Batiste was funky, smooth, warm, and fueled the tension of the story. It kept the pacing of the film up and the stress level high in the constant drum beat that felt like the heartbeat of the film. He gets a chance to perform as the great Billy Preston in number of scenes and he was great as well. Visually, this film was stunning and felt like I was watching a documentary shot on Super 8 film stock. The attention to the detail of the many film scratches and subtle dots in the scene transition was great. There are so many Easter eggs and beginnings of classic SNL sketches that you see being constructed that any die hard fan will catch. Jason Reitman has truly made pulse pounding, stressful and beautiful love letter to the greatest sketch comedy show on television. This was truly one of the best film experiences I've had in a while and most definitely one of the best films of the year! This is a must see!! Let me know what you thought of the film or my review in the comments below. Thanks for reading!

Ten Books tag
Tagged by @logarithmicpanda
List ten books that have stayed with you in some way, don't take but a few minutes, and don't think too hard - they don't have to be the "right" or "great" works, just the ones that have touched you.
(Am I physically capable of remembering that many books ? We'll see !)
Les chevaliers d'Émeraude tome 1 : le feu dans le ciel (it's the one I've reread the most...) by Anne Robillard
The Chronicles of Narnia (specifically the lion, the witch and the wardrobe, but I have all of them in a big book and that's what I'm thinking of mostly) by C.S. Lewis
Evil Genius by Catherine Jinks
Le Quatrième Mur by Sorj Chalandon
La Quête d'Ewilan by Pierre Bottero (I wouldn't be able to name only one of the trilogy though)
Les Colombes du Roi-Soleil tome 5 : le rêve d'Isabeau
La soudaine apparition de Hope Arden by Claire North (I am currently INCAPABLE of finding the original English title, so fuck it. I'm not spending a half hour searching it on my phone haha)
The Silmarillion by J. R. R. Tolkien
The Hunger Games by Suzanne Collins
House of Leaves by Mark Z. Danielewski
Tagging : @isabellebissonrouthier, @the-stray-storyteller, @the-lightbulb-and-the-octopus if you feel like it ! No worries if not :)
#tag games#books#having a shit memory is hard because it's hard to remember what i liked... or what i did not like#it was. actually a struggle to do haha#'dont take but a few minutes' if i did that I'd have One book

Day 13: MM 188 - 207
Another night of better than expected sleep. The temperatures overnight weren’t particularly low, so much so that I was too warm in my sleeping bag. I got started a bit after 8, and it would have been earlier if I hadn’t forgotten I also needed to grab water for an 11 mile carry.
The routeq ascended along the Catalina Camp trail, passing abandoned buildings that I assume supported mining or ranching activity a long time ago. After a few miles, I reached Dan’s Saddle, where the trail linked up with an old mining road. From here, I could see dark clouds rolling southwards towards me, though they didn’t appear to be carrying any rain. The clouds came with a strong wind, and being on a ridgeline there were very few places to escape it. I eventually put on my rain jacket (which does double duty as a windbreaker).
It almost looked like I’d be hiking through the clouds, but as I approached the dark clouds finally passed over the ridge and brought back the sun. This did not reduce the wind, however, and I would fight to keep my hat and hood on for several more miles.
A bit past the High Jinks Ranch, I passed mile 200 of the trail! 25% finished, or as I’ve been telling myself, freshman year is finally over. I had some Oreos I bought in Summerhaven to commemorate the occasion. A bit past this mark, I reached the American Flag trailhead, where I taped up some hotspots on my feet and let them air out a bit.
The rest of the day’s miles were a bit slow, not because of difficult trail, but I think because of the combined fatigue from yesterday’s big climb and needing some more snacks to keep my energy up. This section of trail passed through Oracle State Park, which was fairly scenic and had several benches at vista points (that I availed myself of to take weight off my feet and assist in stretching my back). My right shoulder has been feeling sore, which I suspect has nothing to do with the right shoulder and everything to do with having played the sousaphone, which rests on the left shoulder and likely pre-strengthened that side.
Once I made it to camp, I devoured some of my excess snacks, knowing that I’ll be getting a resupply tomorrow morning (many thanks to my unnamed-for-internet-hygiene-reasons partner!) My next short-term goal is to reach Kearny around MM 265, where I plan to stay indoors and get a shower and laundry. This leg of trail started around 60 miles ago, so I’ll be sorely in need of washing up by the time I arrive in Kearny. After Kearny, I have two 40ish mile legs to reach Superior and Roosevelt Lake.

Two for the price of one!!
What a travesty!! I forgot to publish my football correspondent’s masterly report on our victory at Luton. SHAME on me!! But first, you will have to read his thoughts on our lamentable performance against Fulham…

hi - united have done well recently but with the exception of the 3 goal victory v west ham the general feeling has been that united have been winning in spite of themselves and that success has been largely due to the deficiencies of the opposition and a bit of Lady Luck
fulham are poor travellers and have not won away since the opening day and last won at united in 2003 so despite the loss of shaw and hojlund due to injury one felt united would have enough to win
united made a slow start and similar to recent opponents fulham had a lot of the ball and created some opportunities which were either squandered or required onana to make some good saves - at the other end debutant forson was not having much of an impact but neither were senior pros like rashford and fernandes - united had rashford at no.9 and garnacho on the left and forson on the right - if it were down to me i'd have had mctominay as a straight replacement for hojlund but mr ten Hag disagreed
the match meandered into the 2nd half and half way through fulham forced a corner - the cross went over lindelof and was headed by bassey into the body of a colleague - bassey pounced on the rebound and smashed in the opener
united tried to rouse themselves but in truth didn't look like scoring - i was saying as much to a fellow fan when Fernandes crossed and leno pushed it aside only for the lurking maguire to equalise on 89 minutes - with 9 minutes of stoppage time to be added on it seemed written in the stars that a trademark late winner would arrive
it duly did and the celebrations on the field were joyous and prolonged - unfortunately the majority of the crowd did not share the same feelings because it was the visitors who found the net - a united attack had petered out when lindelof miscontrolled in the box though he prevented a fulham goal kick by putting the ball out for a throw near the corner flag - a long throw found traore who sped away from eriksen and maguire and raced into the united half - he found iwobi at the corner of the box - a clever jink made space and he clipped the ball into the corner past the wrong footed onana -
thats the trouble with late goals the opposition can score them as well - united have won this way at fulham a couple of times in the recent past - this time the boot was on the other foot - i also recall united levelling against palace thru dan james after 89 minutes only for van aanholt to grab the winner
no one was bad for united - trouble was that no one was good - it was all bang average and another let down for the supporters whose hopes of a top 4 finish had been raised only to be undermined yet again by a hugely underwhelming performance
post match ten hag praised his players for their character and spirit and that the bigger picture looked good - maybe he or i need to go to specsavers
in midweek it is the cup at forest followed by city on sunday - a win in the former and a loss in the latter seems probable -defeat in both might have jim ratcliffe contacting someone like graham potter - we shall see
bye
—————————-

hi - thus far in 2024 results have been kind to united and they have yet to taste defeat - luton promised to be a venue where united ought to achieve the victory that is necessary if top 4 ambitions are to be realised
luton kicked off and their first attack was repelled when casemiro whacked an aimless clearance downfield - defender bell tried a backpass but made a complete hash of it and hojlund collected, drove forward and drifted wide of the keeper before making it 1 - 0 after 30 odd seconds
a few minutes later a garnacho shot from a corner was cleverly diverted into goal by hojlund's chest and united were 2 up - it was reminiscent of the fast start at newport
unfortunately just like at newport united allowed the opposition back in the game - luton halved the deficit on 14 minutes - luton pressed and harassed united - an unsettled casemiro gave away numerous free kicks and may have been red carded - just like at newport united were grateful for half time
luton dominated possession in the 2nd half but it was united who made - and squandered - all the chances - garnacho, fernandes and dalot all just had the keeper to beat but failed miserably - keeper saved well from rashford - fernandes also shot wide when just faced by the keeper -luton hit the top of the bar with a header from the last corner of the game - united hung on fairly comfortably as onana didn't have to do much after the early flurry of goals - luton had huffed and puffed but couldn't blow united's house down
so another win for united but there are still concerns to be addressed - it is a strange thing to say but the time to worry as a united fan is when the team takes a 2 goal lead - sensible game management is absent as 11 individuals try to get into the scoring act - it is frustrating as the same pattern is repeated - it seems an impossible dream that united will be able to shut up shop and see out a 2 - 0 win
on a positive note mainoo was marvellous - always cool, calm, composed and collected - evans performed splendidly as a 2nd half sub
in a couple of weeks it is city away - would i take united having a 2 - 0 lead - oh yes i would - as long as they came after 89 and 90 minutes that is
bye
