It was near Thanksgiving ten years ago that Daljit Chahal, a volunteer at Wilson preschool, saw Independence Network’s students leaving school and asked a teacher if there were any holiday events for these students. (Both schools are on the same campus.) There had been a holiday luncheon for the students in the past, Chahal was told, but the coordinator had been unable to continue. “I think God gave me the idea to do it,” said Chahal, who went home and proposed to her husband, Santa Clara City Council Member Raj Chalal, that the family take on the luncheon. Jasprit Jasbirsingh Bumrah: The Evolution of India’s Premier Fast Bowler

Jasprit Jasbirsingh Bumrah, a name that has become synonymous with fast bowling brilliance in the modern era, is a testament to the power of persistence, skill, and hard work. From a young aspiring cricketer in Ahmedabad to becoming one of the most feared pacers in world cricket, Bumrah’s rise has been nothing short of extraordinary. His unorthodox action, combined with his lethal yorkers, has revolutionized the way fast bowlers are perceived in limited-overs cricket. But how did Bumrah, with no traditional fast-bowling background, rise to become India’s bowling spearhead? This article delves into his journey, style, and the impact he has had on world cricket.
Early Life and Beginnings
Born on December 6, 1993, in Ahmedabad, Gujarat, Jasprit Bumrah’s journey to the international cricketing stage was not a typical one. Unlike many of his contemporaries, Bumrah did not hail from a cricketing family. His father, Jasbir Singh, worked in a private firm, and his mother, Daljit Kaur, was a homemaker. Cricket, however, ran in Bumrah’s veins, and he was introduced to the game at a very young age.
As a child, Bumrah was keen on playing cricket, but it was his natural affinity for bowling that set him apart. Initially, Bumrah was a medium-pace bowler, but it was his consistent bowling and his unusual, slinging action that drew attention. His unorthodox delivery method—spearheaded by his high-arm action and lethal yorkers—quickly became his signature, making him a force to reckon with in domestic cricket.
Bumrah’s breakthrough came in 2013 when he was picked up by the Mumbai Indians in the Indian Premier League (IPL). Under the mentorship of former cricketer Ricky Ponting and with the guidance of Lasith Malinga, Bumrah honed his skills further, especially in the art of bowling yorkers in the death overs. It was this IPL stint that gave Bumrah the exposure he needed to refine his bowling technique and earn a reputation as one of the best death bowlers in the world.
International Debut: A Leap into the Big League
Bumrah’s performance in the IPL did not go unnoticed. He was soon called up to the Indian national team, making his debut in a T20 match against Sri Lanka in January 2016. His arrival was a breath of fresh air for Indian cricket, especially in the T20 format. His bowling was sharp, and his yorkers in the death overs became legendary from the very start. Bumrah’s seamless transition into international cricket came as a surprise to many, but his calm demeanor and focus on accuracy quickly made him a key player for India.
Bumrah’s ability to bowl in high-pressure situations—like defending a small total or bowling in the final overs of a tight match—earned him widespread acclaim. His focus on consistency, combined with his remarkable pace and swing, made him an indispensable part of India’s limited-overs setup. He quickly became the go-to bowler for captains MS Dhoni and later Virat Kohli when it came to closing out games.
The Breakthrough in Test Cricket
While Bumrah’s rise in limited-overs cricket was meteoric, his entry into Test cricket was a different challenge altogether. Despite being known for his T20 and ODI exploits, Bumrah made his Test debut in South Africa in 2018. His transition from the limited-overs formats to the Test format was closely watched by fans and critics alike. Bumrah, however, was undeterred, and his performances spoke volumes about his skill set.
His debut Test series was a resounding success, as he picked up crucial wickets on challenging pitches. Bumrah’s pace, bounce, and swing were instrumental in India’s victory in South Africa, and he became the first Indian fast bowler to take a five-wicket haul in Australia since 2004. His performances in Australia and later in England solidified his reputation as a complete bowler who could dominate across all formats.
Bumrah’s rise in Test cricket was a significant milestone in his career. Unlike traditional fast bowlers, he didn’t rely solely on raw pace; instead, his unconventional action allowed him to generate movement both in the air and off the pitch. His success in the longest format of the game demonstrated his adaptability and ability to perform under varied conditions.
The Art of Bowling: Bumrah’s Unique Style
One of the most remarkable aspects of Bumrah’s bowling is his ability to execute yorkers with such precision, making him a formidable weapon in the death overs. But his bowling technique is far from conventional. What stands out most is his high-arm, slingy action, which is often a nightmare for batsmen trying to predict his deliveries. His smooth run-up, coupled with his low-arm release, gives him the ability to swing the ball both ways, making him unpredictable and difficult to face.
Bumrah’s ability to bowl under pressure is unmatched. Whether it’s defending 15 runs off the last over or delivering a tight spell in the middle overs, Bumrah is always calm, focused, and in control of the situation. His mental toughness, especially in high-stakes moments, has made him a fan favorite. Bumrah’s consistent line and length, coupled with his knack for reading the game, are qualities that set him apart from many of his contemporaries.
Overcoming Injuries and Maintaining Consistency
Bumrah’s journey has not been without its hurdles. Over the years, the pacer has battled with multiple injuries, particularly back issues, which have kept him on the sidelines at various times. Yet, each time Bumrah returned to the field, he did so with a renewed determination and hunger. His ability to bounce back from setbacks is a testament to his resilience and his unwavering commitment to his craft.
In recent years, Bumrah has also embraced the role of a mentor for young fast bowlers in India, offering them valuable insights into the art of fast bowling. His experiences with injuries have made him a more mature bowler, focusing not only on his fitness but also on injury prevention and workload management.
Legacy and the Road Ahead
As Bumrah continues to evolve as a cricketer, his legacy is already firmly established. He has become the face of modern fast bowling, redefining the role of a fast bowler in limited-overs cricket. His exceptional skills, combined with his calm demeanor and ability to thrive under pressure, have made him one of the best bowlers in the world. Bumrah’s leadership in the bowling department has been a cornerstone of India’s success in international cricket, and his performances in key series and tournaments have left an indelible mark on the game.
Looking ahead, Bumrah’s future in cricket looks as bright as ever. Despite the challenges of modern-day cricket, with increased workloads and injuries, Bumrah has consistently demonstrated that he is one of the finest fast bowlers to ever play the game. Whether in Tests, ODIs, or T20Is, he has proven his worth and will continue to be a key figure in Indian cricket for years to come.
In conclusion, Jasprit Bumrah’s journey from a young cricketer with a unique action to becoming one of the most celebrated fast bowlers in world cricket is a story of talent, resilience, and undying passion. His legacy as a cricketer is firmly secured, and he will be remembered as one of the game’s greats—someone who changed the game of fast bowling forever.

Assassination Bid On Sukhbir Singh Badal During His Penance At Golden Temple, Suspect Arrested
Sukhbir Singh Badal began serving his penance on Tuesday morning, a day after he was directed to perform as a ‘sewadar'

A man opened fire at Shiromani Akali Dal (SAD) chief and former Punjab Deputy Chief Minister Sukhbir Singh Badal while he was serving his punishment at Amritsar’s Golden Temple on Wednesday morning. Police have arrested the suspect and are questioning him.
The suspect has been identified as Narayan Singh Chaura, a former member of Babbar Khalsa International (BKI), one of the oldest Khalistani separatist groups.
Additional Deputy Commissioner Of Police (ADCP) Harpal Singh said the security arrangements were proper, but the shooter tried to do some mischief and could not succeed.
Amritsar Police Commissioner Gurpreet Singh Bhullar said personnel Rishpal Singh, Jasbir and Parminder displayed alertness and foiled the attempt.
He said Narayan Singh Chaura (attacker), who has a criminal record, has been arrested and a case has been registered.
Amritsar MP and Congress leader Gurjeet Singh Aujla called the incident unfortunate. He said there’s no frisking at Golden temple. He said he did not want to blame CM Mann and added that there was no Khalistani sentiment in Punjab.

Badal began serving his penance on Tuesday morning, a day after he was directed to perform as a ‘sewadar’, and wash dishes and clean shoes at the Golden Temple in Amritsar. Badal was seen wearing a plaque around his neck as he sat in a wheelchair because of a fractured leg.
Sri Akal Takht, the highest temporal body of Sikhs, handed the corrective measures to Badal and other leaders for supporting Dera Sacha Sauda chief Gurmeet Ram Rahim in the 2015 sacrilege of Guru Granth Sahib.
CM Mann Lauds Efforts Of Cops
Punjab Chief Minister Bagwant Mann condemned the attack and lauded the timely action of Punjab Police, who prevented a “major incident" from happening.
“It is the result of the promptness of the Punjab Police that the conspiracy to defame Punjab and Punjabis has failed. The police achieved great success by arresting the assailant on the spot with their promptness," he said and added, “I have issued strict instructions to the police to immediately investigate the incident and submit a report."
SAD Leader Seeks CM’s Resignation
SAD leader Daljit Singh Cheema demanded the resignation of Punjab CM and AAP leader Bhagwant Mann over the incident and the poor law and order situation in the state.
He said, “’Sevaks’ were offering ‘seva’ here. SAD chief Sukhbir Singh Badal was sitting by the Guru Ram Das Dwar as ‘Chowkidar’. A bullet was fired in his direction. I thank Guru Nanak he saved his ‘sevak’.
“This is a huge incident, what era is Punjab being pushed into? I would like to ask the CM of Punjab, where do you want to take Punjab? The attacker was caught on the spot. I also thank the security personnel here. Had they not acted promptly. There should be a high-level judicial inquiry into the incident. We will continue with our ‘seva’," he added.
Akal Takht Issues Penalty
The sentence was issued after Badal offered an unconditional apology to the Akal Takht, acknowledging his mistakes. The Sikh leaders had asked him to respond with either ‘yes’ or ‘no.’ Sukhbir Badal responded ‘yes’ to all the questions.
He admitted to crimes including the gun firing incident, sacrilege and backing the Dera head.
Sukhbir Badal was granted some leniency due to a leg injury. In addition, the title of ‘Fakhr-e-Qaum’ awarded to his father Prakash Singh Badal when he was Chief Minister was revoked after Baba from Sirsa was forgiven.
The sentence was pronounced by Jathedar Giani Raghbir Singh, also directed the working committee of the Shiromani Akali Dal (SAD) to accept the resignation of Sukhbir Badal as party chief, besides forming a committee to hold elections for the post of SAD president and office-bearers within six months.
The five Singh Sahibans (Sikh clergy) also pronounced religious punishment for other Sikh leaders who served as ministers in the Akali Cabinet during 2007 to 2017.
Giani Raghbir Singh said Sukhbir Badal, who was on a wheelchair because of a fractured leg, and rebel leader Sukhdev Singh Dhindsa have been asked to sit outside the Golden Temple wearing the dress of ‘sewadar’ for one hour each for two days.
They will also perform the service of ‘sewadar’ at Takht Kesgarh Sahib, Takht Damdama Sahib, Darbar Sahib at Muktsar and Fatehgarh Sahib for two days each.
Both Sukhbir Badal and Sukhdev Dhindsa were asked to clean utensils and shoes of devotees at the Golden Temple for one hour, besides listening to ‘kirtan’.
The punishment came nearly three months after Sukhbir Badal was declared ‘tankhaiya’ (guilty of religious misconduct) by the Akal Takht.
The Jathedar also directed Akali leaders Sucha Singh Langah, Hira Singh Gabria, Balwinder Singh Bhundar, Daljit Singh Cheema and Gulzar Singh Ranike to clean washrooms for one hour at the Golden Temple, and then clean utensils at the community kitchen after taking bath.
They will also listen to ‘kirtan’ for one hour, the Jathedar said. Other Akali leaders, including Bibi Jagir Kaur, Prem Singh Chandumajra, Surjit Singh Rakhra, Bikram Singh Majithia, Mahesh Inder Singh Grewal, Charanjit Singh Atwal, and Adesh Partap Singh Kairon, were also told to clean washrooms at the Golden Temple for one hour.
