𝑫𝒂𝒊𝒕𝒆𝒕𝒔𝒖𝒋𝒊𝒏 17 (1977) - How Toei Went "Hmm Giant Robo?"
Tumblr media
Daitetsujin 17, the origins of many of your brainrotting Toei composition motifs and sound effects for Tokusatsu. A freshly heeled-off response to Giant Robo's success and the high of the Robot Romance and mecha boom of the 70s, Daitetsujin is co-created by Shotaro Ishinomori and obviously Toei themselves and, to be quite frank, I really like this show to summarize. Daitetsujin 17 is a superb show, with stellar effects work and stories that are not only extremely fun to watch but also engaging. The familiar faces coating it also give it that value of a true encore of the tokusatsu regulars of the Showa Tokusatsu genre. If you were told that Akihiko Hirata and Ulf Otsuki are your main antagonists, wouldn't you go "sign me up??" The mecha designs are also very memorable, each one more so than the last. They shine is their design and have such interesting silhouettes. Check it out! It's wonderful, go on now!

Note
You can really tell Planet Prince was the debut of the guy who, out of the total 350 episodes of Kamen Rider through Super-1, wrote 129 of them, he literally wrote 37% of Kamen Rider through Super-1. He was also the main writer for Omnitsu Kenshi, Akuma-Kun, Akakage, Giant Robo, Barom-1, Arashi, Kikaider, Inazuman, Tatakae Dragon, Ninja Captor, Choujin Bibyun, Daitetsujin 17, & Message From Space Galactic Wars.
I guess he could do good character writing if it was someone else’s character huh

Daitetsujin 17 and the Wonderful Clunkiness of Tokusatsu Soul of Chogokin
Daitetsujin 17 and the Wonderful Clunkiness of Tokusatsu Soul of Chogokin
The latest Soul of Chogokin figure was announced last month, and it’s Daitetsujin 17 (pronounced “One-Seven”) from the 1970s tokusatsu series by the same name. It was created by the very father of tokusatsu, Ishinomori Shotaro, and features the classic “little kid remote-controlling” giant robot motif that began with Tetsujin 28. Prior to its release, I never watched any Daitetsujin 17, but I…

Note
Does Toei has a similar hero to Ultraman?
Not really.  They have some heroes who can grow huge (namely Kamen Rider J) but when the Kyodai Hero Boom was going on, they made a conscious decision to focus on more human level heroes like the original Kamen Rider and Kaikaider.
Tumblr media
That’s not to say they didn’t have any giant-sized tokusatsu but instead of alien heroes, they tended to focus on giant robots.  This started with 1967′s Giant Robo created by Mitsuteru Yokoyama.
Tumblr media
This is the real starting point for Toei’s giant robots which would later lead to Leopardon in Spider-Man and then the giant mecha of Super Sentai starting in 1979. However, before those, Toei produced Shotaro Ishinomori’s Daitetsujin 17 in 1977.
Tumblr media
So, Toei is more known for human-sized heroes who use giant robots to battle kaiju than giant heroes who fight the same monsters.  It’s a stylistic difference between themselves and their nearest competitors Tsuburaya Productions and Toho.
Of course, they weren’t alone in the Tokusatsu Giant Robot business. Nippon Gendai and Senkousha had their Baron series that began in 1973 with Super Robot Red Baron.
Tumblr media
And continued in the next few years with Mach Baron and then Little Superman Gunbaron.
Tumblr media
The 1970s were the most fertile ground for new tokusatsu series and productions companies looking to get in on the trend of TV tokusatsu that began with Ultraman (or actually Ultra Q) and then exploded with the Henshin Hero boom of the early 1970s.
However, the two biggest names in TV Toku were and still are Toei and Tsuburaya.  Toho makes efforts now and then but they never really catch on like Super Sentai, Ultraman or Kamen Rider despite being pretty good shows (I have a real fondness for Chouseishin Gransazer).
Tumblr media
Anyway, this has gotten really off topic at this point.  So, in conclusion while Tsuburaya had their giant heroes, Toei had their human sized heroes and Giant Robots and that’s what’s pretty much stuck through the years.

Daitetsujin 17 is a show that stands out from typical superhero Tokusatsu through being about a giant robot that has a bond with a human rather than transforming from one... and unfortunately I’m not sure I can give it many praises beyond that.
Well, like. Okay. Maybe that sounds super negative to start off on, and this is definitely a show I enjoyed watching; and I can certainly rattle off a few more positives -- for the time and for what they are the visuals are quite nice. I certainly appreciate that, while towards the end of the show it’s toned down; this is a series with an attempt at a more plot-driven and serialised format with mysteries and character drama concerning the heroes last for quite a bit (we don’t really learn the big guy’s deal until about a third into the show!), and of course, Hassler-Kun is my ultimate babygirl supreme who chews scenery like a fucking pro and makes practically any episode worth watching just to see what the hell he’s gonna say and act like this time. Man is the goddamn star of the show and while the material he was given certainly has something to do with it, the actor takes that and turns his performance into something absolutely insane.
Which is a good thing because without him I’m not too sure what I would have been watching for in the last half or so. See, once the initial mysteries resolve it seems that’s only in time for a retool of the show to become a lot lighter and comedic -- not too bad on its own, but between that and the whole military issues I described earlier on it leaves you with a show that’s kinda... bland, thematically? Which seems to be putting too much onus on it but compared to the likes of V3 or Kikaider or even Stronger and Inazuman it just feels like I’m not getting as much out of this as Ishinomori’s other works from the time. And it certainly shows promise, is the thing! Brain as an all-dominating force, 17 slowly starting to become more human, the Daitetsujin 18 arc... but it all rings hollow by the end. 17′s ability to talk doesn’t feel as monumental as it does with say Amazon; Brain as a whole becomes more generic; 18 really compounds all the issues by being something that is interesting but lasts a shocking 4 episodes and leaves zero impact for what really should have been the show’s Riderman, and by the point you’re getting to the good guys just deciding to solve their Skynet problems by building Skynet 2 and completely entirely relying on it... like... just forget it, man; you know?
It’s a show I found interesting stuff in at first and one that had a surprising amount of comedy, but it’s not one I can say is particularly successful or one I can recommend. Glad I had a look for its unique qualities - well, let’s be real; I’m glad I watched for Hassler - but it’s just not that great.

The Winter of Our (Dis)Content: Ogiue Maniax Status Update for January 2022
The Winter of Our (Dis)Content: Ogiue Maniax Status Update for January 2022
Happy New Year! As I say that, 2022 is off to an unusual start. On the blog side, there’s been an issue with many of my older posts because the web hosting I used for many of the images has been down for the past month (and possibly more). I hope I can get it fixed sooner rather than later, but the hosting has been unresponsive. Fortunately, most of the content is primarily text, so even as many…
