Deleted dialog from Far Cry 3’s main story

I went through the Far Cry 3 oasisstrings file, which contains all the subtitles (among other in-game text), in search of unreleased lines of dialog from the main story.

I looked at what was available in the sound files, organized all of them in separate folders, checked several gameplay videos to refresh my memory on which lines were in the game, and ended up with a list of all the dialog that, for whatever reason, didn’t make it to the final version of Far Cry 3.

In this series of posts, I’m sharing all the unreleased content I found (minus a few duplicates), even when it wasn’t very interesting, so we have a comprehensive list of the lines that were cut in each story mission.

On a side note, the oasisstrings file never says which character is speaking, so every time you see names, it’s either because the corresponding audio files were available and I know who the speaker is, or because the context made it easy to guess their identity.

Part 1: Make a Break for It

The game opens with a video of Jason and his friends having fun on vacation, but it seems this scene was originally longer. A few of the lines below are still in the game, others were cut but are still available as audio files (and can be listened to here), and the rest is completely gone.

Here’s the dialog from the long version of the “parachute” sequence from the opening cutscene:

After the scene with Vaas and Grant getting himself and Jason out of the cage, the two brothers try to snealiky escape the camp. There could have been more dialog between them:

These guys need to go down. I'll take one, you take the other. Follow my lead.

Shh, they're sleeping inside.

When they think they’re finally safe, Grant gets shot. There used to be a short exchange between Jason (whose line can be found here) and Vaas immediately after the gunshot:

Vaas: Oh God.[Laugh] This is so dramatic. Jason: You killed my brother, you fuck! Vaas: You killed my brother you motherfucker [Laugh]. Vaas is so mean, huh? Really. No no, Vaas is a meanie hoo hoo.

By the way, one of Vaas’ lines (“I'm gonna give you 30 seconds and if this jungle doesn't eat you up alive, I will.[whistle] Go, go”) always gets cut in the game, but you can listen to the full version here.

Finally, Jason runs away through the forest with Vaas’ pirates after him. There originally was going to be more dialog during this sequence too, mostly from Jason, it seems:

lemme explain. both daisy and jason had a very close bond with the deceased grant (boyfriend and brother respectively), both are athletes (daisy is a professional swimmer), both escaped from capture (daisy even did so by herself!), both almost died doing so and are rescued by a local (jason by dennis, daisy by the doctor) and both cope with grief by ignoring it and inmersing themselves fully in tasks that help the group (jason fighting pirates and rescuing their friends, daisy fixing the boat they use to escape the island).

what i mean by all this is that, if we move some set pieces around, daisy could have been the protagonist of fc3. it would be interesting to explore these ideas in a fic, specially given the gendered nature of the plot. thinking about the vaas DLC where he states that his sister is a woman of “big plans. low aspirations”... because citra’s entire endgame depends solely in the ultimate warrior being a man. we do however know from the vaas DLC that there are rakyat women fighters, they might not be of the warrior class in rakyat culture (possibly?), but certainly it’s not a taboo for them to join the war efforts. how citra’s manipulations would change in a timeline where daisy (alias snow white goldilocks) inherits the tatau?

Currently watching Twisters with headphones and subtitles (as it should be experienced). If you had a hard time hearing some of the quieter dialogue like me, here is a list of little details I didn't notice the first time:

Scott's driver tells to Boone to blow him when the Tornado Wranglers arrive at the first gas station.

Ben telling Tyler to keep his eyes on the road when he is staring at Kate as she and Javi pass them.

As Boone is hanging out the window loading rockets, he sings 'Dead End Road' by Jellyroll and then when the camera pans out he yells "SING IT BEN!" (Honestly this rewatch caught a lot of background dialogue for him, made me love Boone even more).

The cause of the broken trigger during the second tornado is melted chocolate and Tyler is lecturing Boone about eating chocolate in the truck.

In the background after the Stillwater tornado you can see the StormPAR guys digging the truck out of the wreck of the motel. (Still find it hilarious that it survived, considering we see a - slightly smaller - truck get sucked straight into the tornado in the same area).

Scott 100% calls Riggs his uncle. I already was pretty sure that was what he said, but subtitles confirmed it.

You can barely hear the dialogue, but the entire time during the EF5 that hits El Reno Scott is the one talking in the truck with Javi. It's all super quiet because of the music and sound of the tornado, but throughout the entire thing it is Scott who is showing fear and Javi is the calmer one (while still being realistic for the scene). I think it just adds an interesting take on how calm he is later and wanting to go back to the tornado. Maybe a bit of a pride thing?

Not so much something that I *just* noticed, but I find the inconsistency with Tyler's truck damage at the end hilarious. The thing just got rolled by an EF5 and a few days later (StormPAR truck is still covered in mud, so it can't be a big time gap) it seems fine at the airport. I can totally see him being the type of guy who would absolutely run it to the mechanic as soon as possible, that is HIS BABY.

Part 2: The Social Club

In oasisstrings, this mission is the second one. Maybe it’s a coincidence, or maybe Jason was going to relive this moment after losing consciousness and before waking up in Amanaki.

The beginning of the mission is identical to what we see in the game, but there used to be a few more lines here and there. For example, here’s a longer version of the moment Jason is at the bar to get drinks. The deleted lines are bolded:

Fuck beer. What's the drink here in Bangkok?

The Mai Tai!

Forget it. Let's do sambuca shots!

[mumbled]…five, six… seven!

Girlfriend troubles?

She told you?

After speaking with Doug and finally finding Riley (and Keith), the friends go dancing, but a fight breaks out and they run to the elevator. This scene used to be longer too, and all the unreleased lines are bolded below:

Then, we have what looks like the group’s arrival on the Rook Islands. We see glimpses of this in the introduction and the video in Hoyt’s compound (mission “All In”), but it appears it could have been a cutscene:
