What's Left of the Looney Tunes?
So you’re a Looney Tunes fan, and you’re waiting with baited breath (Greetings, Bait!) for the cartoon list for the next Collector’s Choice Blu-Ray. And as you wait to see if they add that 1953 Friz Freleng or 1958 Robert McKimson cartoon, you must be thinking: Surely they’ve released every single cartoon at SOME point since the 1980s, right? Well, except for the really racist ones. Right?
Nah. There’s 129 Looney Tunes and Merrie Melodies that have never been officially released, restored or unrestored, on home video at all. And, to be honest, most of them are unlikely to be on the Collector’s Choice sets. Let’s take a look at the last bastions against having all 1000 LT/MM cartoons available.
Bosko. Now, there are a few Bosko cartoons available. There’s 38 Bosko cartoons from 1930-1933, not counting the weird ones like the Talk-ink Kid pilot or whatever Bosko and Honey was. Of those, 11 have been released officially. This leaves 27 in limbo. This is a shame, there are some really good Bosko cartoons.
Buddy. Even worse, to be honest. 23 Buddy cartoons were made, 5 have had some official release. That leaves 18. Now, there’s a reason for that. They’re awful. (Also, two of those 18, Buddy of the Apes and Buddy in Africa, also fall under one of the later categories we’ll get to.)
Seven B&W Merrie Melodies. Two of these, Hittin’ the Trail for Hallelujah Land and Goin’ to Heaven on a Mule, are basically banned for content. Those Were Wonderful Days, Why Do I Dream Those Dreams, The Girl at the Ironing Board, The Miller’s Daughter, and Rhythm in the Bow, are simply not available, possibly as they’re dull. However, they have been restored. (As has HtTfHL.)
Seven B&W Looney Tunes. Mostly the same as above. The Daffy Duckaroo and Tokio Jokio are banned for content, though we may see Duckaroo someday (Native American caricatures have traditionally been less banned than Black and Asian caricatures). Saps in Chaps also has some Native American gags, I think. As for The Fire Alarm, Joe Glow the Firefly, Gopher Goofy and Nutty News, they’ve been restored but never released.
The rest of the “Censored 11”, of which Hittin’ the Trail for Hallelujah Land was the first. As most cartoon fans know, this is not a catch all of all racist WB cartoons, it’s just the ones that were owned by Associated Artists productions. So yeah, Sunday Go to Meetin’ Time, Clean Pastures, Uncle Tom’s Bungalow, Jungle Jitters, The Isle of Pingo Pongo, All This and Rabbit Stew (a Bugs Bunny cartoon), Coal Black and de Sebben Dwarfs, Tin Pan Alley Cats, Angel Puss and Goldilocks and the Jivin’ Bears. They’ve all been restored.
The dog cartoons. There are a bunch of one-shots that have no regular characters but all involve dogs, and (likely as they don’t have a “star” and aren’t really great) they’ve never come out. Pappy’s Puppy, Mixed Master, A Waggily Tale, Dog Tales. All but Pappy’s Puppy are restored.
Miscellaneous “banned for content” cartoons. Which is Witch (a Bugs Bunny cartoon), Tom Tom Tomcat (a Tweety and Sylvester cartoon), and two REALLY late cartoons, Hocus Pocus Pow Wow and Injun Trouble. None of these have been restored.
Random missing 50s stuff. A Bone for a Bone (Goofy Gophers), Sock a Doodle Doo (Foghorn Leghorn), Easy Peckin’s, Quack Shot (Daffy Duck and Elmer Fudd), Trick or Tweet (Tweety).
60s stuff that’s still actually Warner Brothers. There’s about 10 or 12 early 60s cartoons that just aren’t very good, and that’s why they’re not out. They’ve all been restored except Unnatural History and What’s My Lion, which are two of the worst LT/MM shorts that ever came out – not for content, they’re simply pathetically unfunny.
All the post-64 stuff. There’s a pile, I won’t break them down one by one. Mostly Daffy/Speedy cartoons, the nadir of both characters. A few of the Roadrunner cartoons that weren’t stuffed onto that one DVD a while back. They’re here as no one wants to watch them.
The post-67 stuff, aka the nightmare years. Cool Cat, Merlin the Magic Mouse, Bunny and Claude… those. (Though actually, both Bunny and Claude shorts HAVE been released.) They’re here for the same reason – unpopularity.
Note this doesn’t even get into the cartoons which were fine to release in the 1980s on VHS but *aren’t* fine to release now (all the Merrie Melodies that weren’t banned but have racial stereotypes, such as the Inki cartoons, a huge number of cowboy and Indian cartoons, and Bugs Bunny’s unfortunate wartime cartoon). Or all the stuff that’s restored and out on Max, but has never hit a DVD or Blu-Ray (half of the 30s Merrie Melodies). Or the stuff that’s unrestored, not on Max and has never hit a DVD or Blu-Ray (the other half of the 1930s Merrie Melodies). Or Holiday for Drumsticks, what’s up with that?
In any case, when they announce the cartoons for the 4th set in a week or so, you can look at this list and see if it has any of those.

Exploring the Timeless Craft of Traditional Hand-Drawn Animation
In the ever-evolving landscape of animation, one enduring art form continues to captivate audiences with its charm, craftsmanship, and nostalgic allure: traditional hand-drawn animation. This classic technique, also known as 2D animation, holds a revered place in the history of visual storytelling, characterized by its painstaking frame-by-frame creation and artistic prowess.
Understanding Traditional Hand-Drawn Animation,
Traditional hand-drawn animation involves crafting each frame of the animation sequence by hand. Artists meticulously sketch keyframes, creating the illusion of movement through a series of drawings that are then photographed or digitally compiled to create motion. This method demands immense skill, patience, and artistry, as animators breathe life into characters and scenes through their drawings.
Famous Examples:
1. Disney Classics
"Snow White and the Seven Dwarfs" (1937): Considered the first full-length cel-animated feature film, this Disney masterpiece marked a significant milestone in animation history.
"The Lion King" (1994): Combining traditional animation with some innovative techniques, this film remains a classic example of the beauty and emotional depth achievable through hand-drawn animation.
2. Studio Ghibli Films
"My Neighbor Totoro" (1988): Renowned for its enchanting hand-drawn visuals, Studio Ghibli's works, including this film, showcase the magical essence of traditional animation.
"Spirited Away" (2001): A mesmerizing blend of traditional hand-drawn animation and modern technology, winning an Academy Award for Best Animated Feature.
3. Warner Bros. Cartoons
"Looney Tunes" Series: Timeless characters like Bugs Bunny, Daffy Duck, and Porky Pig came to life through the brilliance of hand-drawn animation, entertaining audiences for generations.
How It Differs from Other Types of Animation
Computer-Generated Animation (CGI):
Process: Traditional hand-drawn animation involves manual frame-by-frame creation, while CGI relies on computer software to generate images and motion.
Aesthetic: Hand-drawn animation often boasts a more organic and stylized look, with imperfections adding to its charm, whereas CGI tends to offer polished and realistic visuals.
The uncanny valley effect: The Uncanny Valley Effect is a peculiar phenomenon in the realm of animation and robotics, where the closer a human replica—be it digital or mechanical—resembles a real person, the more unsettling it becomes to human observers. This discomfort stems from subtle discrepancies between the replica and a genuine human, leading to an eerie, uncanny sensation. In the 2001 movie "The Mummy Returns," CGI technology was used to attempt to recreate a youthful Dwayne Johnson in his role as the Scorpion King. While ground-breaking for its time, the CGI representation of Johnson's character fell into the depths of the Uncanny Valley. Despite the impressive strides in computer-generated imagery, the digital incarnation of Johnson's character lacked the authenticity necessary to bridge the gap between a lifelike portrayal and an artificial creation.
2. Stop Motion Animation
Process: Stop motion involves physically manipulating real-world objects and photographing them frame by frame to create motion.
Tangible vs. Illustrative: Unlike the drawn nature of hand-drawn animation, stop motion relies on physical objects and puppets for animation.
Range of motion: The range of motion in stop-motion can be limited by the physical constraints of the models or puppets. Animators must work within the confines of these physical objects, which can restrict the complexity and range of movements they can achieve. traditionally hand-drawn animation allows for a much broader range of motion. Animators drawing each frame have the freedom to create movements that are not limited by physical constraints, this flexibility enables a wider range of expressions, gestures, and movements, allowing for more intricate and detailed animations. Hand-drawn animation offers greater fluidity and versatility in depicting a character's actions and emotions compared to stop-motion animation.
The Timeless Appeal of Hand-Drawn Animation
Despite advancements in technology, traditional hand-drawn animation continues to hold a special place in the hearts of audiences and creators alike. Its unique warmth, artistic style, and human touch evoke emotions and create immersive storytelling experiences that resonate across generations.
In a rapidly evolving animation landscape, traditional hand-drawn animation stands as a testament to the enduring power of artistry and creativity, showcasing the beauty of bringing drawings to life, frame by frame.
Whether through the enchanting worlds of Disney classics or the imaginative realms of Studio Ghibli, the legacy of traditional hand-drawn animation remains an integral part of cinematic history, weaving stories that continue to inspire and delight audiences worldwide.

The cartoons from 1943 are definitely the greatest mixed bag for me so far. There are some pretty good shorts and Chuck Jones’s style starts getting a little bit more proeminent (also this moment wich makes me laugh out loud). There's a parody of Superman that I thought it was clever. Some cartoons also have a slightly surrealistic look, especially on the backgrounds, wich is really cool. Also Sniffles returns.
However, since it’s World War II, there’s A LOT of war propaganda, and that may not be anybody’s cup of tea. The biggest problem that comes with all of that is the amount of terribly racist caricatures, especially regarding the japanese. One specific short is so racist I couldn’t finish it. Also the first cartoon released that year was Coal Black and de Sebben Dwarfs, wich...yeah...
You do see Hitler getting mocked and beaten a lot, so that’s a good part.
The best thing that I’ve seen from that year, however is that, for the first time, Bugs Bunny and Daffy Duck meet, albeit for a few seconds, on the short Porky’s Pig Feat :
Between this and Frankenstein Meets the Wolfman, 1943 was a good year for crossovers.
Decided to watch all the Looney Tunes cartoons in chronological order (a person needs a hobby, right?).
I’m still on the very early ones, and I don’t know how to feel about Bosko.

Daffy’s older ehehe. So tried my hand in vintage effect, inspired by @ducktracy’s pieces
Had this idea prompt in my list for months, including drawing this prototype Snow White design. I’m happy I finally got to do it, even if I’m not 100% with the final effects.

Snow White Winter: "Faerie Tale Theatre: Snow White and the Seven Dwarfs" (1984 TV series episode)
Faerie Tale Theatre was a mainstay of my childhood. While I was born too late to see its original run on Showtime, I watched The Disney Channel's reruns every Monday at 7 PM. Shelley Duvall's series of hour-long, star-studded fairy tale retellings never lost its appeal for me, with its unique mixture of quirkiness and sincerity. Over time I saw nearly every episode, but one I've always remembered especially well is Snow White and the Seven Dwarfs, starring Vanessa Redgrave as the wicked Queen, Vincent Price as a wry Magic Mirror who also narrates the story, and a 23-year-old, pre-Downton Abbey Elizabeth McGovern as Snow White.
The story receives a straightforward retelling, but still has creative choices to offer. Redgrave's red-haired Queen is a humorously sensual narcissist, whose favorite pastime is to languidly rhapsodize over her own beautiful features as she gazes at herself in the mirror. Especially the magic one, which speaks to her through a man's face carved at the top of the wooden frame. In sharp contrast to the Queen is the innocent, unpretentious Snow White, not only a pure-hearted ingenue who earns the Huntsman's pity in the woods by praying for him, but also a fun-loving girl who learns to juggle from the court jester and once secretly swam in the moat.
The seven dwarfs, Barnaby, Boniface, Bruno, Baldwin, Bertram, Bernard and Bubba, are all played by actors with dwarfism. (The eldest, Billy Curtis, was a Munchkin in The Wizard of Oz, while another, Lou Carry, was no stranger to Snow White, having played Sneezy in Disney's Snow White Live at Radio City Music Hall). While they're less individualized than Disney's dwarfs, they're still a likable, colorful crew, who tease each other and bicker like genuine brothers – particularly in the running gag of the smallest dwarf Bruno (Peter Risch) picking fights with the others by calling everything he disagrees with "a stupid assumption." Bubba (Tony Cox), the only black dwarf, is especially enamored with having a princess in the house and becomes a particular friend to Snow White.
Meanwhile, the Prince (Rex Smith) is a charming yet slightly silly romantic, eternally strumming a lute and singing of love in the forest. The dwarfs are his friends from the beginning, and Bubba tries to tell him about Snow White, but the other dwarfs won't allow it because they don't want Snow White to leave them. He also meets the Queen in her peddler woman disguise, in a comic scene where she unsuccessfully flirts with him, forgetting that she's enchanted herself to look ugly and old.
The Queen makes two attempts on Snow White's life. First is the attempt to suffocate her, though rather than do it with a bodice, she strangles her with rainbow-colored ribbons around her neck. This leads to a creative image as the dwarfs save Snow White by propping her up and unwinding the ribbons in what looks like a maypole dance. After this comes the poisoned apple. The Prince first sees Snow White as the dwarfs are carrying her glass coffin to a hilltop for all to see, but he doesn't ask to take her home with him; the dwarfs just continue on their journey, but then stumble and fall, jolting the piece of apple from Snow White's throat. After Snow White and the Prince are married, the Prince has his court magician cast a spell to punish the Queen with what for her is a fate worse than death. From then on, whenever she looks in a mirror, the glass turns black, so she'll never see her own beauty again.
As always in Faerie Tale Theatre, the cast is excellent. McGovern is a visually perfect Snow White, with her ivory-skinned China doll beauty, and though her deep, almost gravely speaking voice takes some getting used to in an ingenue role, she gives a winsome performance all the same. But in many ways this episode belongs to Redgrave, whose sultry, self-adoring, tantrum-throwing, sometimes daffy yet dangerous Queen provides just the right touch of serio-comic villainy. Price's witty Magic Mirror is always a scene stealer too, as is Smith's singing Prince, and as are all the dwarfs. Their performances are nicely framed by the atmospheric sets and costumes inspired by the art of N.C. Wyeth and the understatedly romantic musical score.
Faerie Tale Theatre is a must-see for all fairy tale lovers, and Snow White is definitely one of the standout episodes of the series.
