“I somehow expected this to be . . . fancier.” Bulma said, the thin silver chain connecting her wrist to the briefcase coldly bumping against her thumb as a slight shiver rippled through her body. She turned her face to the side to glance at 18 and felt the slight shiver grow a little colder—18 with her cold, perfect face looked more inhuman to Bulma now that she knew. Her electric blue eyes glowed bright in the night, magnetized to the rusting, groaning, barnacle bitten and mildewed ship before them more than the black and churning sea, the ocean air barely riffling the bottom of the curtain falls of her platinum blonde hair even as it violently tussled Bulma’s. “Did she tell you what was in your case?”
“No.”
“Me either. I guess maybe it’s money, or--?”
“There’s money on the ship.” 18 replied sternly, “and clothes.”
“Oh. Of course.” Bulma said, feeling a blush burn within her cheeks at the slight admonishment.
“What about your friend?” 18 replied, “Your phone is still in your pocket, don’t you have someone you were going to call?”
“He’s here. He knows. I just gotta send him the dock number.” Bulma said as she fumbled around with clumsy fingers, pulling the phone from her pocket only to drop it to the wooden planks of the dock. She quickly snatched it up again and brushed through her contacts list, “I’m not worried so much about him meeting us on time as I am Vegeta,”
“He’s a big boy. Surely he can take care of himself.” 18 replied.
“Right but . . . . he doesn’t have a phone.” Bulma muttered, shaking her head and raising her eyebrow as she quickly tapped out a message to their rendezvous, “Most apes don’t have phones.” Bulma said more to herself than to the android beside her.
“You said it, not me.” 18 replied bluntly, raising her voice in hopes the human would return the same volume instead of making ambiguous vocal utterances at the device in her hand. “Who is this other person you’re bringing anyways? I don’t understand why we couldn’t have just gone by ourselves.”
“Because . . . “ Bulma said, perking her head up as soon as she received a reply in text, “I wanted to do things right for a change.”
“Do they understand the nature of this cruise?” 18 said with a slight duck of her head, “I mean, do they understand we’re not exactly sailing to pleasure island with bingo grannies?”
Bulma tucked her phone back into her pocket. She looked past 18 to the end of the dock opposite of the ship, looking for any movement in the fog. “He knows. He’s used to it.”
“We’re taking a big risk letting someone else come with us. We should have cleared it with ChiChi first. She could have got an extra pass to make this a little less conspicuous.”
“Chichi is not my boss.” Bulma said, folding her arms around herself as best she could with the suitcase chained to her wrist, “She tried. She tried while we were all together at Capsule Corp, but when I wanted to get things done, you know what I did? I did things my way—MY way, 18. I’m an engineer, she’s a paper pusher. Between you and Vegeta, we already have the muscle, but what we need now . . . “ she said, taking a deep breath as she pulled her arms in tighter around herself, “Is someone who can keep things in perspective.”
“Perspective?”
“A human perspective, 18. No offense.” She quickly tacked on as the Android slid her icy blue eyes to their corners to look at Bulma through slightly narrowed eyelids, “That’s him. Here he comes.” She said, giving a smile that brightened and quickly fell as the figure stepped into the light, “Oh god. Oh Krillin, no.” She said, planting her face in her palm as the pint sized police officer approached wearing a bright purple pinstripe suit—old fashioned, like something out of a corny old movie, complete with matching broad rimmed fedora hat and black and white wingtip shoes, “Duuuuuuuuuude.” She whined, rolling her head around her shoulders.
