i finally made first contact. It was a lot less romantic than i imagined. 

i was just wandering around like usual, exploring the dead and decaying sites, picking through the refuse. It had been a long day and i wasn’t feeling particularly lucky. i figured i’d call it quits after checking out this shopping site, since it was relatively in-tact and i really didn’t want to stumble back out into the dark again. 

The first thing that struck me were the prices. i know that inflation is real, and the currency’s different, but even adjusting for all that, the clothes were astonishingly cheap. They looked pretty good in the images, too, so i really don’t know how the math worked out. Maybe clothes were just really cheap to make back then.

Anyway, i suddenly got a ping. A text box initialized with an old-fashioned, hyper-bare-bones chat window- And in it, an Alpha Indigo/dt reached out to me.

The conversation wasn’t very long.

i barely got my first question in before some asshole jumped me and chased me all the way back out the network like a madman. Once i was out, they slammed the door on me, loudly. Here i was all doubly-excited at meeting my first real Alpha Indigo/dt, AND talking to my first other user. Just my luck that the first person i run into back here is an a-social a-hole.

Though i guess i shouldn’t expect to find a lot of friendly, open, social butterflies hiding on the old net.

For a parting gift, they even sent a worm after me to try and brick all my screengrabs- but i was the better hacker this time.

Not really. My automated scripts took care of it without me having to do anything, and i copied those wholesale from a starter kit. So it was less that i was the better hacker, and more that the other guy was using really outdated tools.

Like we’re both spelunkers, but they’re using candles and i’ve got flashlights.

大家好! Previously, I said I wouldn't revisit Pizza Hut for their promotional Hut Melts unless a friend wanted to dine there; well, MZ wanted to try them after I told him they were good. He, WW, DT, MS, SW and I ordered a feast and ate to our hearts' content. By the end of the meal, SW and I agreed that, we may return if their promotional items look good, but not for regular pizza (because... bored). This boredom applies to other fastfood chains' regular menus.

Back to moderately healthy meals when dining out. I visited a local cai fan (mixed dishes rice) stall and they served salmon, so I ordered it, braised fu pi (tofu skin) and 2 types of squash - hairy gourd and luffa - to go with congee. At another stall, I chose gong bao ji ding (kungpo chicken), onion omelette, egg tofu, stirfried green beans as well as stirfried cabbage and brinjal with shredded carrots. The weather has been hideously warm lately, so, I drank freshly squeezed watermelon juice and iced barley instead of iced local coffee. Both beverages are incredibly refreshing in this sweltering heat.

SW and I finally met in a comfortable setting; we wore comfy clothes and caught up over Lan Zhou mian (Lan Zhou noodles). SW chose beef soup mian, I had dry chicken mian. We shared sides - braised eggs, tofu skin mock chicken, fu pi with capsicum and oyster mushrooms. She said I'm the happiest and most relaxed she's seen in a long while. We chatted about Coco's recent passing, current affairs, Asian celebrities, health and fitness as well as life in general.

We also chatted about body positivity and the articles complaining about the Y2K trend which have appeared since its resurgence. SW, at her height, is an Asian equivalent of a US plus size woman. Her view was, 'Just wear the clothes already and stop whining.' And I agree with her. Body positivity has paved the way for heavier women to proudly don bikinis; low slung jeans actually cover more of the body, so why the fear of them?

There's also the option to skip the trend or parts of it. I wore low slung jeans and baby tees when Y2K fashion was trendy the first time; I'll pass. This heat is a killer and, outside of work, I live in shorts and tops in light cotton or fabrics that let my skin breathe. I don't follow trends that don't suit me anyway. 下次见!

DMC x Pokemon AU - Which pokemon they would choose

So an idea appeared out of nowhere in my head: If Pokemon somehow existed in the DMC universe and pokemon training and battles were officially a thing too, which pokemon would the crew choose as their companions?

For these headcanons, I will give each character two kinds of pokemon: the first one will be a pokemon they would totally choose as a friend and partner for adventure as well as competitive battles, and the other will be one they would keep at their side mostly as a cute or silly companion, whether it’s a baby pokemon or a fully evolved one, it’s one they are really fond of and always look after.

So let’s get started! More bellow the cut because it’s a really long post.

Dante

Ideal partner: Houndoom

He considers Houndoom’s general appearance as cool and badass, of course he would love having a literal hellhound in his team.

If you think about it, they share lots of similarities: The same color palette, the devil motif, the fact that Dante has horns too when in DT or SDT form… it’s as if this pokemon was made with him in mind.

Dante found him when he was a little puppy Houndour. The poor thing was all alone in an alley near his shop and seeing him crying out made his heart ache.

So he brought the little one back home and nursed him. Now he’s a powerful Houndoom who loves nothing more than to fight alongside his trainer. There’s nothing that can stop those too when together.

Silly companion: Alcremie

Obviously.

One reason only: Infinite strawberry sundaes.

That’s it.

Would totally have an entire team made of Alcremies. He wouldn’t even battle or anything. He just wants to enjoy his lifetime supply of strawberry sundaes.

Vergil

Ideal partner: Aegislash

Vergil is a man of the sword, so it’s clear he would choose an Aegislash as his partner.

The first time he spotted this particular Honedge, he knew. He could see the great power dormant in them, so it was a matter of awakening said potential.

He trained them vigorously, making them evolve into a Doublade, and finally, into an Aegislash. To this day, not a single pokemon has managed to defeat them, the only exception being Dante and his Houndoom.

That won’t stop them though. They are both too prideful in their quest for strength and power.

Silly companion: Snom

Yeaaah, this is a weird one. Snom is such a cute baby, maybe this adorableness can melt Vergil’s heart?

It was Dante who gifted his twin a Snom. To quote him: “You’re too grumpy. Maybe this cute little guy can help you ease some of that grumpiness away.”

Wherever he goes, the little baby follows behind. Vergil will never admit this out loud but he does smile at the peaceful sensation his silly friend gives him.

Also imagine him trying to pronounce their name in that nasal voice of his. SHnom. 

V

Ideal partner: Corviknight, Umbreon and Dusknoir

It was a tie between these pokemon since they represent V’s three demon familiars: Griffon, Shadow and Nightmare respectively.

Corviknight may have a playful personality, but during battles he’s dead serious. He’s down right merciless and enjoys tearing apart his foes.

Umbreon is as calm as a housecat, but beware! She is a fierce one and won’t think twice to attack those who step out of line. Even more ruthless than Corviknight.

Dusknoir is as mysterious as the man himself, but V still trusts them and lets them do pretty much their own thing. Despite V never giving them orders, it almost looks as if Dusknoir can understand his thoughts telepathically. No one is sure how the hell he does it though. Quite a mystery indeed.

Silly companion: Mr Rime

Both wear a coat. Both carry a cane. Both love to tap dance. See what I’m getting at?

The first time V spotted a Mr Rime and witnessed their comical moves, he couldn’t help but laugh in endearment.

You will often find them enjoying a nice cup of tea together. They may speak different languages, but somehow they understand each other so perfectly.

When feeling in a dance mood, he and Mr Rime will dance together in perfect harmony and sync. Singin’ in the Rain is their favorite musical btw.

Nero

Ideal partner: Toxtricity

It only made sense to grant our punk boy Nero a punk pokemon like Toxtricity.

Both share an explosive and energetic personality, as well as an identical inclination towards rock and metal music. They especially love taunting their foes by doing an air guitar together.

Now the two are an inseparable and lethal duo. Many have made the mistake of challenging them, only to end up battered and humiliated.

Just look at this good boi.

You bet she spoils her Yamper rotten. She particularly adores baby-talking her lovely companion to no end.

Lady

Ideal partner: Inteleon

A couple of ‘Walking Arsenals’ indeed. Ready to take on any challenge they may encounter.

Lady remembers how she met her partner when they were a tiny and shy Sobble. Now that they’ve become such a strong pokemon, Lady feels so proud of their growth.

Extremely resourceful, even in dire situations. Will use all the tools at their disposition to finish their job.

Their sniper skills are unparalleled so you’d better watch out. In a battle of wits, there’s no beating this duo.

Lady is such an Eevee fan, her childhood dream was to befriend one and have numerous adventures together.

So when she finally got one many years later, she actually started crying happy tears. (It was a gift from Dante. He figured she deserved a companion after what happened in the Temen-ni-gru incident.)

She spends her free time playing with her adorable Eevee, there’s even a whole collection of toys for their playtime together.

Kyrie

Ideal partner: Gardevoir

I personally consider Kyrie as a woman with a righteous heart and a strong sense of justice just like her brother Credo, so it’s no surprise her pokemon partner is actually a Gardevoir.

Mess with them and hoo boy. So you have chosen death.

She and Gardevoir are actually among the strongest teams in the region. In fact, to this day, Nero and his Toxtricity haven’t been able to defeat these two in a pokemon battle.

Do not underestimate these girls. They can and will drag you through the mud if you dare hurt them or their loved ones.

Silly companion: Wooloo

Kyrie melted at the sight of Wooloo. So soft, and adorable, and puffy!

She loves knitting, so they would be perfect to provide her with lots of top quality wool. 

Once during Christmas, she donated handmade sweaters to the children at the local orphanage. Wooloo and her were so happy to help the little ones, they made it a tradition for them to do every year.

Nico

Ideal partner: Arcanine

My friend Gabi will literally be like “IDK I think the other hoodie is way better” and I’ve been used to people either (1) making fun of me for trying something new or (2) lying to me when something didn’t look great. The other big thing that has helped me is not believing any of the labels. I find stuff in mens sections, womens sections, piles on the floor, gender neutral spots. I look everywhere. Since style was so difficult for me to figure out, at first I was very dedicated to the mens section because I was trying to step so far away from anything femme That didn’t quite resonate because I hate being in a suit AS MUCH as I hate being in a dress. It was a long process, but I am so glad I’ve finally figured some stuff out.”-DOR

“Wow this is the hardest question anyone has ever asked me???? I’m pretty obsessed with the swimwear. The OUTPLAY swimsuit I own literally changed my life. “Jaden Smith, Vivek Shraya, Ari Fitz & Harry Styles, are all my fashion icons. They all play with style in a way you don’t necessarily see anywhere else. I can’t point to any one of them and say “that person is way more masculine than feminine” or vice versa. They all manage to walk a line that doesn’t even have a name or exist, it’s not like it’s androgynous all the time either. I don’t know how to put my finger on it and I think that’s why I find it so inspiring. They’re all just hot.”- DOR 

What are your hopes for the future of the company?-DT

“I would love to be like a giant queer ASOS and I would love for huge brands to copy me. It seems like any time a huge brand tries to make something ‘gender neutral’ they just make oversized jean jackets or sweatshirts. Just use the clothes you already have and let different types of people wear them.. I don’t understand how people make things so complicated.”-DOR

On June 23rd of 2017, I had my heart torn out of my body.

The love of my life, the man who I wanted to spend the rest of my life with, ended our 3 year relationship, and broke up with me.

I didn’t see it coming. I don’t know why it happened, I am replaying it over and over and over in my head, and I don’t have any closure, don’t have any answers or reasons that make sense.

 Let’s start from the beginning.

 My name is Andrea. I am 25 years old, and a Canadian born Chinese girl. I am from Calgary, Alberta – when I was 17 years old I moved to Toronto to study Fashion design at Ryerson University. After graduation, I have worked with apparel and jewelry companies, while freelancing on the side in graphic design. In the previous year I strived very hard to get myself into the footwear industry. This opportunity came true for me when New Balance offered me a job as a color design intern in their design foundry program. For one year, commencing June 5, 2017, I would be relocated to Lawrence, Massachusetts (MA) to work for NB for a year.

 I had been dating my boyfriend, whom I will refer to as DTS, since April 11, 2014. We met through mutual friends during a motorcycle group ride. We hit it off very well, had lots of interests in common while being different in our career paths and skillsets. We have been living together since August 2014, and have only had one really, REALLY giant nasty fight. Otherwise we talk things out – we would ask each other if we were okay, respect one another if we needed space, and be there for one another during hard times. We laugh together a lot, support each other, cook together, joke with one another and, in my mind, were really meant for each other. We both had aspirations in life, but we planned together as well. I wanted to spend my life with this man.

DTS has been the most supportive and wonderful person during the transition of my moving to the USA. It had been a pretty stressful last two months, with having to find housing in MA while still being in Canada, and on top of that prepare for the move and make sure I had everything to ensure I was successful in obtaining a TN Visa at the border. We chatted very frequently about the difficulties of a long-distance relationship. But he had family in Boston, and we were going to try our best to make it work, and to give it a try. He even said to me, that he would be very disappointed, and even angry if I turned down the job offer. So with a hopeful heart, we set off to MA on May 30th, 2017, my belongings and bike in tow. He stayed with me for a week while I set up camp, and we (together with my beautiful friends who assisted in my move), did some touristy events in that week. On Friday, June 2nd, 2017, we said our goodbyes. I was tearful, but we hugged and kissed and said we loved each other.

 We’ve been away from each other before, just not in such long lengths of time. Some times a week, sometimes three weeks. During these times, we always messaged each other frequently (as much as our schedules would allow), and always said goodnight and good morning to one another. It was hard, to be sure, but we were supportive of one another and it never got in the way of our feelings for one another.

 This time started off the same as the others. We were messaging each other, telling one another that we loved them, and keeping each other updated with life’s happenings.

 On June 9th, things began to change.

I continued to message DTS as usual, but his responses were sparse. I asked him if it was cumbersome to message me, and his response was “it doesn’t feel cumbersome”. I said “OK”, and left it at that. That night he didn’t tell me he loved me, and all of a sudden the affectionate names were no longer present.

I thought he was just tired. So I continued as I would normally.

June 10th was better, more messages from him, and better flow in conversation. Still no affectionate messages, and no love.

June 11th proceeded about the same, but more messages from DTS regarding one of our cats who had gone outside and hadn’t returned for several hours. (He showed up completely happy 6 hours later). We ended that night with my telling him I was wearing his boxers to sleep, and all he said was “Nice 😊”.

 The next day I messaged him 3 times, and did not receive a message back until 6:43pm. He was working night shift, but didn’t tell me. We ended the conversation with him saying “I’ll message you in a bit 😊” at 7:01pm, but he never did after that.

 Since that day, he only would message me if I asked him a direct question. He would not address me by my name, call me the usual affectionate pet names, and was very curt. I didn’t understand what was going on.

 On June 22nd, he told me at 8:55am “I will be coming to Boston tomorrow”. I responded with “You are???” “WHAATTT” “YOU’RE COMING?!?!” And a lot of heart eye emojis. No response back after that in regards to his plans for coming down. I asked “if you’d like, let me know your plan for tomorrow” at 11:06pm.

 June 23rd, 2017 – D DAY.

At 1PM I asked if he would like to go out for Korean BBQ for dinner. He said “not tonight but thank you for asking, I’ll by at your apt around 7ish”.

I bailed on my plans with my roommate that night and waited for him.

No sights of him at 7:30. Or at 8:00. At 8:30pm I was starving, and called him. He said “I’ll be there in around 30 minutes or so”. So I rode quickly to Panera to grab a sandwich, and rode back. He was waiting at the gate.

I asked why he couldn’t have told me he was running so late, since he told me he would arrive at around 7pm. When he is running late, regardless of who it is he always lets them know.

He responded with “It was unexpected, I didn’t think it would take so long”.

I asked where his bags were. He said he had stopped off at his sister’s first.

We walked upstairs. he gave me an awkward hug and sat on the couch. I asked if he was staying at his sister’s house. He said yes.

I took a deep breath.

I put my food down, washed my hands, sat down beside him and looked at him.

I asked if he was breaking up with me.

 He said yes.

 I broke down.

Immediate heart reaction.

I couldn’t breathe.

 Huge sobs. Gut wrenching cries coming straight from my soul.

Hyperventilating.

 I fell from the couch, onto the floor.

 Minutes pass.

 I try to regain enough breath to ask, “why”.

 He said

“This relationship isn’t what I’m looking for”, and

“It’s nothing you did.”

 I asked if he was in love with someone else.

 He said no.

 I asked “What are you looking for”.

He said “I don’t know. I don’t know what I’m looking for”.

 He wouldn’t say to me that I wasn’t what he was looking for.

 I couldn’t control the immense sobbing, the shattered cries, the heaved breathes.

 I said “I wanted to spend my life with you”.

 He said “I thought I did too”.

 At one point, I stumbled to my closet, gathered all of this clothing on loan to me, and gave it back to him.

 I continued to cry, and couldn’t regain composure. I sobbed at him “you don’t have to stay if you don’t want to”.

And to my astonishment

 this man,

who I only know as loving and kind and good,

got up,

and left me, alone,

in my apartment,

alone.

 I called my sister on speakerphone, and cried like I have never done before.

The pain was astonishing.

I screamed in agony repeatedly.

And I don’t scream.

It came from deep inside, something I didn’t know existed.

 When I thought I could start to pull a breath again, another thought came to me:

I would never see my cats again.

 Reading this I understand it sounds silly, but they are my kids. I’ve never owned pets before, and I loved them dearly. It was not only losing my partner in life, but also all the family associated with him, including the animals.

 My body defied physics, and I cried, non-stop, intensely, until my soul had been drained from my body.

Just a shell of a person.

My stomach doubled me over in pain.

My hands had non-stop pins and needles.

Sleep did not come that night.

 Things I managed to do while being in the worst pain of my life:

-        Texted him “I’m actually shocked you just left when I’m alone. I thought you were a better person than that. But thanks for telling me in person instead of over the phone”.

The Logitech G433 and Logitech G233 headsets are durable, yet lightweight and extremely comfortable. Let’s Talk About Techs: Dublin Tech Summit #DTS

Are ‘Friends’ Sextechtric?

I attended the first Dublin Tech Summit (@DubTechSummit) and man, was I wowed by the awesome depth and breadth of the event as I learned new things, renewed old acquaintances, and forged new business relationships too!

Robo Thespian from Engineered Arts: “We Can’t Unbite the Apple”. Apparently.

DTS offered a powerful schedule covering areas from Fashion and Healthcare to Internet of Things (IoT) and FinTech and a geansaí load more for an audience that ranged from storytellers to investors to coders, combined with workshops and a platform for startups and spearheaded by a top notch speaker line up that brought a new dimension to the idea of tech being sexy.

A powerful promotional campaign by the DTS team upfront saw a packed Convention Centre Dublin (@TheCCD) with attendees from across the globe, all greeted by the ever-engaging Robo Thespian in the lobby.

FinTech, IoT, and More...

I was particularly impressed with the sessions on FinTech and IoT, and the focus on happening technologies such as AI, VR and chatbots, and how millennials live and work in the digital age. Millennials, for example, would rather bank with a digital tech brand such as Amazon or Google than ye olde style financial institution.

Accenture, Samsung, and others brought cutting edge AI, VR, and other happening tech to the event.

Oracle* provided a strong on-floor presence as well as great sessions on IoT and business transformation, revealing such fascinating uses of the technology from parking management and factory monitoring in the U.S. to e-scooters in Japan to using data analytics for performance sailing in the America’s Cup, FinTech and more!

Oracle had a strong floor presence for SaaS, IoT and Cloud Services, a fun Anki OVERDRIVE demo, super IoT sessions, and joined with other industry players to share insights into BigData, IoT, and digital transformation.

That Conversation About UI

An engaging session from Comtrade Digital on chatbots, or conversational computing if you like, offered insights into how chatbots now realize the Turing Test for business as mobile messaging chat apps surpass social networks. Chatbots offer not only a personal, fun, and free yet deeply contextual mobile user experience for the millennial generation but a text-based conversational  engagement that resonates with us ‘perennials’ too.

There was a super-engaging FinTech session on chatbot conversational computing from Comtrade Digital called “When millennials literally can't even ...”

Would I Go Again? Hell, Yep (If I Am Let In)

In all, this was one super event that did the Dublin tech ecosystem proud. DTS was a killer event for thought leadership, doing and learning, relationship building, and opening your mind to new possibilities. That it did my hometown Dublin proud made it all a sweeter experience!

I did feel that DTS should have had a bigger emphasis on design and user experience (we are a nation of artists and storytellers after all), but let’s consider that an opportunity for 2018. Thankfully, DTS was not pub-centric like some other tech events I might mention, though a broader range of onsite food options for flexitarians, vegans, vegetarians and friends would have been nice. As for the video relay in the media centre not being up to streaming standard, well let’s consider that a Gavin Belson moment that will pass. These are things that can be addressed relatively easily next time around.
