Mutulu Lives On In The Hearts of the People!
Transition Announcement of Dr. #MutuluShakur.
The New Afrikan People's Organization and the Malcolm X Grassroots Movement are deeply saddened to announce the transition of our beloved comrade and co-founder, Dr. Mutulu Shakur on Friday, July 7th, 2023.
Born Jeral Wayne Williams on August 8th, 1950, he was a loving father and grandfather, revolutionary acupuncturist, human rights organizer and former political prisoner of war. Mutulu's life was transformative to the many people he organized, healed, mentored and inspired. Dr. Mutulu Shakur taught us that “people struggle for liberation because they love [the] people.” He will always be remembered for his continued commitment to an independent and socialist New Afrika and for his battle cry, Straight Ahead!
Information regarding a public service will be forthcoming.
Further inquiries and questions email MXGM National Information Coordinator at [email protected]

At this time, hospital conditions were bad and people didn’t have access to their own records and didn’t have the right to be treated well. So, the second success, another important thing, is the Patient’s Bill of Rights, which is the 10 points that you find in hospital rooms. The Patient’s Bill of Rights was actually the result of a collaboration between members of the Young Lords and the Black Panther Party, with the assistance of the doctors, and written by me. Although it is considerably watered down now, you still find that Patient’s Bill of Rights on the wall of every hospital. It’s not as radical as the original . . . but still includes some of the issues we highlighted, such as the ability to have access to your medical records. The ability to be treated like a human being, not to have research done on you unless you give your consent. All those things are really important.
Tumblr media
A third important thing is the Lincoln Hospital drug detoxification program, which still is in existence today. We started that program. It was established by Panama [Vicente “Panama” Alba] and Butch [Ford, a Bronx activist who had run a detox program in his home] with the support of the Young Lords, the Black Panthers, and the radical doctors. It’s still in existence today, of course, but considerably watered down by the people who are running it now. But it wouldn’t have been there without our struggle.
Tumblr media
Several key NY Black Panther Party members played a prominent role in leading these initiatives; including Michael Tabor who identified the link between fighting drug addiction and revolution, Zayd Shakur who spearheaded the occupation of Lincoln Hospital, Assata Shakur and Joan Bird who used their positions as nurses to improve access to healthcare for the people, Cleo Silvers who drafted the Patient’s Bill of Rights, Curtis Powell’s work in acupuncture and drug treatment, and Dr. Mutulu Shakur’s establishment of a multiracial drug treatment clinic

Another Panther member involved in the health activism initiatives and the drafting of a Patient’s Bill of Rights was Afeni Shakur

Power Haus Creative’s Black August Month Begins With Support For Activist Jamil Al-Amin
Black August Month has now officially kicked off.
The event is a widespread call to action that encompasses fasting, raising awareness, and offering resources for political prisoners. It is a collaborative effort between Power Haus Creative and community partners Mahmoud Abdul Rauf, Students for Imam Jamil, Black Art in America, and Black Power Media.
The monthlong initiative was founded in California during the 1970s following a prison uprising and the deaths of brothers Johnathan and George Jackson. This year, it is being used to spread awareness and advocate for a new trial for civil rights activist Jamil Abdullah Al-Amin.
Formerly H. Rap Brown, Al-Amin has been incarcerated since 2002. Still, his contributions to the Black liberation movement remain intact. Some consider Al-Amin an enigma. He is the face of an Anti-Riot Act. He was a part of the Student Nonviolent Coordinating Committee. And now he sits in Supermax prison, convicted of murder. However, his son Kairi Al-Amin, Power Haus Creative, and its partners continue to fight for justice after over two decades, alleging cruel and unusual punishment and wrongful conviction.
“No tangible noise was ever made and as such, my father’s conviction and subsequent exile, a vendetta realized, has gone unchecked,” wrote Kairi Al-Amin in a 2020 petition calling for a new trial.
“The cruel and unusual punishment, the confession of another man, the medical neglect in hopes that he dies, the gag order, the federal holding of a state prisoner away from his attorneys and family, we’ve done nothing about anything and because of our lack of action, much like the man himself, the truth about this case and his legacy have been erased from public view.”
The petition has garnered over 75,000 signatures in three years, but it is still a long way from its goal of 150,000. Despite this, Al-Amin’s advocates remain adamant about their mission, hoping to secure a retrial.
Summayah Ali, founder, and CEO of Power Haus Creative spoke about Al-Amin’s circumstances. “All of our political prisoners need to be released. In the case of Dr. Mutulu Shakur, he was imprisoned for nearly 37 years only to transition eight months after release. We don’t want that for Imam Jamil or anyone that was selfless enough to pave the way for some of the very privileges we benefit from today,” she told BLACK ENTERPRISE.
“They fought for us and deserve far better treatment than this,” she continued.
“My children are in their early 20s and I remind them to sit with the elders as often as possible. As a Muslim woman who’s Black, a  mother, Black Arts Organizer, and an activist I believe we have a responsibility to fight the good fight for those who tilled the soil for us. Imam Jamil is not just a champion for the community but also for the arts. He has said how much the arts played a significant role in the civil rights movement.  We are using the Art of Activism to fight back.”
In line with this mission, participating partners will also be “Feeding the Community,” literally and figuratively, throughout August. Through virtual sessions, scholars and activists will share different information and resources.
Food drive donations will be accepted throughout the month at the Black Art in America Gallery at 1802 Connaly Dr. in East Point, Georgia. Later this month, on Aug. 28, human rights activist and former NBA player Mahmoud Abdul Rauf will speak at the gallery on an “Art of Activism” panel. For more scheduled events and information, visit @powerhauscreative on Instagram. To request a transfer for Imam Jamil Abdullah Al-Amin, visit wwww.freeimamjamil.com to fill out a three-minute form.

Dr. Mutulu Shakur, a highly esteemed acupuncturist, healer, revolutionary, and leader in the Black liberation movement, peacefully passed away on Friday, July 7, at 72 years old. He courageously battled multiple myeloma, a blood cancer that damages the bones and kidneys, since 2019.

Ruchell "Cinque" Magee Will Be free!
Politicized prisoner and jailhouse lawyer, Ruchell “Cinque” Magee, is slated to be released after 67 years in the California prison system. Cinque is 84 years old, arrested on an indeterminate sentence around a marijuana charge from 1963, he joined the attempted jailbreak during the Marin County Courthouse shootout in which Jonathan Jackson attempted to free William A. Christmas and James McClain. Ruchell was the sole survivor and was a co-defendant of Angela Davis until their cases were split. There is a fundraiser to support Cinque’s post-release needs as an elder: https://fundrazr.com/82E6S2
Rashid's Treatment Resumes, Thanks To Support!
As an update to past announcements from Kevin “Rashid” Johnson of the Revolutionary Intercommunal Black Panther Party, the public pressure from calls & emails apparently had the desired results and as of a few days ago he was receiving the medical treatment he needs for his prostate cancer, though he hasn’t received all of his papers so he can continue to pursue his lawsuits against the Virginia DOC since they were confiscated by prisoncrats, but he’s super thankful for public engagement to defend his health. More updates on his case can be found at rashidmod.com

Quote
The existence of Black August as an institution proves that African people in the United States have a revolutionary political legacy that exists independently of and in open opposition to this empire that exploits, oppresses, and colonizes us. It shows that far from being content with a simple ‘seat at the table,’ we have pursued strategies for liberation that center our own inalienable right to self-determination – producing our own heroes, our own strategies, our own histories of survival and struggle. We are not American citizens but rather a nation of maroons, runaways, healers, warriors – AFRICANS – who have been engaged in an uncompromising fight for freedom for hundreds of years on this land and beyond. It is essential that we understand Black August as not just a time of personal reflection and discipline but also a time to uplift that legacy of independent revolutionary African struggle. We must recommit ourselves – not just for one month but daily – to the struggle for the liberation of our people while understanding, honoring, and learning from those that sacrificed everything so that we could live to fight today. We must always honor and learn from the memories of our fallen while we fight like hell for the freedom of those – like Sundiata Acoli, Mumia Abu Jamal, Imam Jamil al-Amin, Rev Joy Powell, Dr Mutulu Shakur, Russell ‘Maroon’ Shoatz, Joseph Bowen, Veronza Bowers, Kamau Sadiki, Keith Davis Jr, Josh Williams, and many thousands more – who are still held captive by our enemies for the so-called crime of fighting for our people to be free.
