Artists from A to Z: Cosmo’s Midnight

I don’t listen to a lot of artists whose name starts with ‘C’. But I recently heard about Cosmo’s Midnight, so it felt right to pick them as one of this month’s highlights.

The first time I came across their name was when I discovered Wave Racer a couple of years ago (at the end of 2015, I think). I was in love with Wave Racer’s music, especially their EP ‘Flash Drive’. The first song on that album is called ‘Introooo’ and it features Cosmo’s Midnight. 

Later this year (right around the release of Cosmo’s Midnight’s debut-album ‘What Comes Next’ I discovered a song they released last year called ‘History’. I didn’t recognize their name, but that song quickly became one of my jams.  They released  a couple of singles leading up to the release of ‘What Comes Next’, and like with Bad Sounds, almost all of them made it on to one of my favourites playlists. 

I also found a remix done by Wave Racer called ‘The Dofflin’ which I believe is a song by Cosmo’s Midnight, but I can’t find any of the versions on Spotify or iTunes, so I don’t know if it’s an official release.

I’m not sure the two twin brothers of Cosmo’s Midnight sing on any of their own songs, but (like many electronic artists do) they have collaborated with a lot different artists, like Jay Prince, Panama, Lido, and Wave Racer of course, just to name a few.

Style/Genre/Sound: I would say their music is electronic (pop?) with a touch of hip-hop and R&B. They’re kind of quirky (in a good way), but still easy to listen to (when I say that, I don’t mean it as a bad thing). They have a very laid-back, soft/chill style. It’s hard for me to describe, but the instrumentals in their music kinda makes me feel like I’m in a dream, while the vocals send me back to reality. I feel the same way about artists like SBTRKT and Giraffage.

My recommendations: Obviously, I would recommend listening to ‘History’ since it’s the first song I heard by them :)

I would also recommend listening to one of their early singles ‘Snare’ just to hear how different they sound now compared to 4 years ago.

I love every single song on their debut-album ‘What Comes Next’, so it’s hard for me to pick just a few to recommend, but I’m gonna go with ‘Get To Know (feat. Winston Surfshirt’ (my favourite track on the album),  ‘Lowkey (feat. Buddy and Jay Prince)’ and ‘Talk to Me (feat. Tove Styrke)’. ‘Get To Know’ and ‘Lowkey’ have more of a hip-hop vibe, while 'Talk to Me’ is almost ‘cutesy’ but in a kind of passive aggressive way (’History’ has sort of the same mood).
