Eddie has now 'gifted' Hellfire to Will as he's not returning to high school, graduating on a technicality. However, he suggests to the new DM that they play a one off over the summer (to get Will used to the group's dynamics, and so he can say goodbye to his little sheepies in style).
But he gets to play with them too, at Will's insistence, as Eddie's DM'd for so long he never really gets a chance to be a PC. Eddie's character is a bard that the group meet, playing in a tavern and magically enslaved by the innkeeper. Because of the spell, he has no memory of who he is, except that he's a bard.
(Which works meta wise too, as Eddie might have knowledge on the DM side...but he's a bit shaky as an actual player. it's been a while after all)
The Party take pity on him, breaking his bondage by brutally killing the innkeeper and bringing him along. He's lower than everyone else in most stats, except for charisma, which he's insanely high for. And since as they're off to find a hidden God to convince him to come back to his people...that high charisma would come in handy.
At the end of the one shot, it seems like the God they face, concentrates damage on the person physically closest to him, which is Eddie's character. Eddie gets brutally taken down until the team drag him away, and revive him. (Eddie makes some snarky comments about the new DM staking his claim by annihilating the old DM and the party finds it hilarious)
But the God keeps aiming for the bard, until Eddie is at zero, then he goes after Dustin...the mage...who is technically the most powerful on the team and nowhere near the God in comparison to the others. Then when Dustin goes down, it's their paladin next...and the group start to freak out.
Eddie passes his death save roll, heals himself and is almost immediately taken down again. The party realise pretty quickly that it's not proximity that is the issue, and that the God is taking out the most powerful first. But Eddie's bard is one of the weaker characters, so that doesn't make ANY sense.
It's Gareth that makes the connection, a split second before Jeff does. He sits back in his chair, stares thoughtfully at Eddie and uses his own turn to grapple the God's weapon from his hands.
It's surprisingly easy, and The God immediately shrinks into a gnarled, grizzly looking goblin, who screeches until Mike cuts his head off with a nat 20 he hadn't been able to roll all night.
It was the weapon. The weapon that contained a God's power.
Gareth and Jeff are still looking at Eddie.
"No memory, huh?" Gareth asks.
Eddie shrugs. "Nothing at all."
"Just pick up the fucking sword, dude." Jeff sighs, and Eddie does.
The instant his character's hands touch the sword, it changes into a golden, glowing lute, the power flows into him, and their bard ascends back into godhood, agreeing to go back to his people.
The whole table descends into chaos, while Eddie and Will high five each other. Of course they were in on it together.
"Fucking DM's" Gareth complains, but he's not angry, not really.
"Ah, ah, ah, G Bear, no swearing in front of the kiddies." Eddie reminds him, gleefully.
The 'kids' didn't even hear him, too busy crowding around Will to congratulate him on his grand return. He'd written the entire thing, and collaborated with Eddie just to make sure it was a good fit for the Hellfire gang.
"Well, I saw it coming hours ago." Steve says, from his spot on the sofa, surprising the older teens. "You don't give up control easily, Eds."
"Ugh...way too much info, Harrington." Jeff groans, wrinkling his nose, and laughing with Gareth at the violent flush to Steve's cheeks.
"Aww you did kinda walk into that one with open arms, baby boy." Eddie coos, swooping down to press kisses against Steve's embarrassed cheek.
He scoops Steve into an embrace, ignoring his grumbles, and looks up at his bandmates, "So what do you think, did baby Byers pass the little test that you thought I didn't know about?"
"Hell yeah." They both agree, enthusiastic and immediate.
"This year's gonna be awesome, Eddie." Gareth adds, grinning.
They all look over to where the younger kids are, still crowding together and excitedly discussing the last few hours. Will is glowing with pride and happiness. It's a good look on him. Jeff and Gareth slap Eddie on the back and wander off to join them.
Eddie sighs, curling into Steve as much as he can. He knows he's clingy, but he needs this right now. It's bittersweet. While he's not in school anymore, he has a part time job and an apprenticeship that's going to take up far more time than he'd realised. And he's lost all of his D&D shit too. It all makes sense to hand over permanently, but it still hurts.
"You ok babe?" Steve asks. He's so nice and lovely and sweet that Eddie melts on the inside at the concern in his voice.
"It's like my kids are leaving home." He admits. "Even though technically I guess I'm the one doing the leaving."
"Growing up sucks." Steve agrees. He rubs his fingers down Eddie's arm, reassuringly. "Don't worry babe, they're not gonna forget you."
"Better fucking not." Eddie grumbled, pressing his face into Steve's neck.
He looked over. The kids had already forgotten that they were both there, too busy packing up and trying in vain to get details from Will about the next campaign.
It was a good thing though, Eddie tried convincing himself. They were all so enthusiastic and in good spirits, they didn't need him for that. It's why he'd started Hellfire in the first place, to inspire this kind of camaraderie for the outcasts. Something that would outlast him (even if the rest of the town had their own legacy instead).
"It's not forever, Eds." Steve reminded him. "Once we've got our place we'll host every week if you want."
It wasn't soon enough to soothe him.
But they were ok, and happy, and alive.
So it would have to be enough...for now.

Fic Recs
In honor of things being shitty in the tag right now and everyone in their depression era, I'm offering a few fic recs in these trying times. Hope you discover something new, friends. đź–¤
the comforts that make us feel numb by passerine_in_jade.
“No, but really. If I were a girl,” Mike presses on, looking up at Will with red-rimmed eyes through dark lashes. Leaning in. Somehow, fully unaware that this line of questioning has Will's heart climbing up to his throat. “Would you want to kiss me?”
or, Will and Mike get high in the desert.
Well written, almost dreamy quality to it. Author to watch for me! Can't believe I only just discovered their writing.
A Wish For Something More by @waroftheposes
Seven year old Will didn't have a problem with kissing his best friend on a dare. Seventeen year old Will, however, would not do it if someone held his hand over a fire.
Or: Truth or dare at seven and truth or dare at seventeen.
They're silly and sweet and oh so confused. The writing is lovely as well. Great if you're in the mood for fluff.
On the Same Frequency by @oldfashionedmorphine
Ever since his best friend Will Byers was murdered back in 1985, Mike Wheeler wanted nothing more than to leave his hometown of Hawkins, Indiana and never look back—only each and every year he’s forced to make an exception when it comes to the holidays. And when Mike visits for Christmas in 1995, his mom asks him to help clear out some junk in his room and down in the basement before he returns home to Indianapolis. But when he comes across an old trunk containing his Supercom walkie-talkie and ham radio, he discovers something strange that has the potential to change everything…
(or an AU inspired by the movie “Frequency” from 2000)
I'm only just starting this, but Frequency au?? Hell yes.
Fleeting by olliecoddle. @souverian-are-we
Mike liked Will’s art shows, albeit slightly less the higher class they had gotten. Little paintings in the corner of a cafe morphed into white walls and rich spectators poised with champagne and well-mannered criticism. Still, he had been looking forward to it. He wanted to go. But now, walking up to the glass doors, he had to admit he felt jittery.
or, Will's new paintings are a little too personal
This is one of my absolute favorites ever. The writing of course, it's ollie. But the descriptions, the entire buildup of Mike's reaction in the art gallery, the content of the painting? The entire concept is beautiful. And be sure to look up the painting Will's was inspired by. It will tell you everything.
any semblance of touch by anonymous.
“Nothing,” Will says, right into Mike’s ear. “Still feeling good?”
So good. Mike makes sure to not say it aloud this time. “I think,” Mike says slowly, heart pounding, “I need” — Will pulls back just a little, just enough for their noses to bump against each other, clumsy, and Mike bites the bullet — “one more.”
Will is still in Mike’s lap, which is maybe not very platonic of him, and the joint has smoldered its way down to the end, nearly over, all eaten up by the fire. Will swallows thickly, then leans closer, a perfect imitation of their positions from earlier. Mike isn’t sure how long it’s been, but fire has been eating away at him too, this whole time, leaving him on the brink of going up in smoke, slow and burning and so good.“Yeah?” Will murmurs, realization dawning on him, eyes wide. “One more?”
or: Mike’s still new to this whole smoking thing. Will has a few ideas.
Utterly depressing this is anonymous because the writing is phenomenal. So alive and vivid. Not sure where this fic was hiding, but I'm glad I found it. Highlights: Mike’s inner dialogue, the playfulness between them, the lowered inhibitions finally letting them relax into the moment.
nosebleeds from epiphanies (i took full in the face) by wheelersboy @karenchildress.
Hawkins, Montana, June 1988. When Lonnie Byers catches his youngest son in the arms of another boy, he calls in that favor owed to him by rancher Jim Hopper in Lenora: Will must work as an unpaid ranch hand and learn to "man up." Mike Wheeler follows him to the creepy ranch with electrical problems, like any best friend would.
jo's writing is always fantastic. he has such a unique voice and mike's struggle in this just does things for me.
When The Sun Runs Out by olliecoddle @souverian-are-we
On a dreary day in March, 1989 the population of Hawkins, Indiana dropped to four. Will Byers watched as the final family left, the bed of their truck packed to the brim and tied down with a tarp. Furniture stuck out at odd angles, and the corner flap flailed in the breeze as they turned onto the highway. Will followed the vehicle with his eyes until it disappeared as a dot on the long stretch of pavement. Then, he got in his car and went home.
Or, Will is burning out, and Mike is mesmerized by the flame.
This was sexy as hell and all I'm gonna say is tattoos. I really enjoyed this little rougher around the edges, let down by life, closed off Will after being left in Hawkins alone with El, Hopper, and Joyce to wait for the end of the world that never seems to come.
dirty rain by henrycreel
mike wheeler is an average alpha teenage boy working on keeping tight control of his raging hormones in the wake of being seventeen years old, unmated, and a virgin who's never spent his rut with anyone before. when one of his teachers makes an innocent request of him, he finds himself spiraling almost right away. the omega sitting next to him in class is going to be his omega one way or another even if it means employing some traditional and unconventional means to show him who he belongs to.
will byers is an omega with a tendency toward anxiety and outright fear, marked by years of abuse at the hands of his father. high school should be a chance to open a new chapter for himself, but he only truly finds comfort sitting next to mike, an alpha whose presence seems to keep the usual mocking and bullying at bay. but when mike starts to cross the line from friendly classmate into so much more, will has no time to decide if he's ready to move on to a relationship of his own, to finding a mate to settle down with like his big brother already has.
mike is making the decision for both of them.
A solid Omegaverse fic! <3

I know in canon we’ve only really gotten a focus on Will’s feelings for Mike, but one of my favorite things to do is write Mike as, like, absolutely gobsmacked down bad for this boy. Will helps him climb onto something and he is just starry eyed, tender emotional music playing, the whole thing looks like a dramatic anime moment in his head type shit. Meanwhile Will is just <3 he’s so darn cute when he needs my help

"Eddie, what was that for?"
"It's fine man, don't worry about it."
----------------------------------------------
"Right, so let's sleep. Does this class as a long rest Eddie?"

"I wanna roll perception too."
"Sure, baby Byers. Have at it."
*Will rolls dice*
"Eighteen plus four, so twenty-two."
"Just seems like an ordinary pond. "
"What the shit."
"Language, Gare-bear."
----------------------------------------------
"Right, so I'll go through the door first- "
"How'd you open the door?"
"I...turn the handle and push, like every other door I've ever opened in my damn life, that good with you?"
*Eddie picks up dice*
"You still have those dragon skin gloves on, Lady Applejack?"
"No I don't! Wait! No! I haven't...wait a sec- "
*Eddie rolls dice*
*Eddie rolls dice*
"You don't currently seem to feel any ill effects."
"Oh HELL no."
----------------------------------------------
"Look we need to stealth. I've got pass without trace so we- "
"Not for all of us though, we've got numbers on our side so we can- "
"Hey, while you're deciding on your plan of action, can you all roll me a quick perception?"
"What the shit, Eddie? Shit, two"
"Why, Eddie. Seven."
"What, why man? Four."
"Three."
"Eight."
"Three. Shit, shit, shit."
"Eleven?"
"None above eleven? Ok, cool, thanks."
"Eddie...?"
"Carry on, don't worry about it."
"Eddie, what was that for."
"Don't worry about it."
"EDDIE??"
----------------------------------------------
"I'm gonna pick up the swo- "
"You picked it up? With which hand?"
"....actually...I did NOT pick it up."

thinking about the potential dynamic we could have gotten between Will and Eddie
i feel like, at first, Will would have been... overwhelmed by Eddie.  especially if he met him later than the rest of the party, so the rest of them are already used to his outbursts and grandiose, bombastic personality and Will just sort of has to accept it
he might get quieter than usual, “hiding” behind his friends so Eddie wouldn’t pay attention to him and inadvertently drag him into the spotlight.  his friends aren’t exactly quiet, but they don’t want to be the center of attention either.  if they’re the center of attention, it could mean more chances to be ridiculed and bullied.  and as 14/15 year olds, they don’t quite have the developed thick skin/growth out of caring about other’s opinions of them the way Eddie has after being ridiculed his whole life
he doesn’t dislike Eddie, and he in fact admires him for standing up to the people who are nasty to him and wholeheartedly being himself, but he’s just... a lot, at first
and while the party might tell Will to not worry about it, Eddie’s just like this all the time, he’s not scary or mean, Eddie would pay attention and start to ease up around Will
he’s acutely aware of his reputation and the way people perceive him, and while a lot of the time he ignores it, he knows this hesitancy from Will isn’t from a source of hatred or distaste, but rather simply a key to the fact that he’s a quiet, sensitive boy who’s been thrust into something before he’s entirely comfortable
so, Eddie makes a point to not draw attention to Will.  when he goes on a tirade about “forced conformity” or stupid sportsball games, he doesn’t try to rope Will into it.  when he starts wrestling with Dustin or getting handsy with the other boys, he simply gives Will a light clap on the shoulder, nudge with his elbow, or nothing at all.  when he starts pulling out loud jokes or antics, he doesn’t assume Will will just play along and lets Will insert himself first
he doesn’t ignore Will, and in fact he probably pays the closest attention to him out of all of the kids, but he lets Will make the choice to come in to the circle
he tones himself down when Will is there.  at least, he does at first, allowing Will to become familiar with his soft side first rather than being met with his outspoken, sharp exterior.  he would understand that Will needs that gentle buildup, lest he be too intimidated and distance himself
Eddie knows he can be a lot sometimes, and he prides himself on that, but he cares more about comfort and trust than anything else.  we see this with Chrissy, how he keeps himself mellow most of the time during their interactions (at least by comparison to his cafeteria outbursts and DMing), only breaking out of it to do something silly to ease the tension and make her smile.  sure, he was also like that because he was nervous to be doing a drug deal with the current Queen of Hawkins High, but as soon as he sees something’s wrong, he lets himself go soft rather than letting his nerves make him defensive
it would be much of the same with Will.  allowing himself to drop the hard exterior to make sure Will knows he can be trusted, he’s a safe person to come to, and he’s only sharp-tongued when he absolutely needs to be
and you know that once Eddie showed that kind of restraint, Will would easily fall into his company, more than happy to be lumped into the “other” that Eddie Munson finds himself in because he’s proven himself to be a metalhead with a heart of gold before anything else
plus once Will gets comfortable, you know his flare for the theatrics (looking at you, s3) would become fully fledged under Eddie’s guidance and they’d have great fun poring over campaign notes and Eddie would be so fucking hyped for Will’s drawings
