Btw ALL CRAFTS BENIFIT FROM INCREASING YOUR UNDERSTANDING OF MECHANICAL FORCES AND THE SHAPES OF ENGINEERING.
I grew up with my maternal grandparents visiting every summer with their trailer attatched ( heavy duty, biiig truck needed, deseil, associate the smell with their visits to this day, and the characteristic sound of the idiling engine ) and working with my Engineer ( Computer Science + UI Design, Electrical, HVAC, Boiler operation and troubleshooting, specialization in retrofitting old buildings with large multifloor airflow systems with minimal disturbance to the original structure, later trained to supervise new construction + oversee and assist in the labor of installation on site ) Dad to plan, construct, and install home and barnyard improvements / modifications / upgrades.
Not only were the blocks I played with from age 6 months to 14 years old made from scrap wood with the edges sanded off to make em kiddo safe, I was often Around as Dad and Grandpa were drawing on grid paper, discussing weight distribution, load bearing beams, when a box support is needed, how the square design of a box support is modified and how measurements on paper became the pieces that made a whole heckin chicken coop in one summer. As I got older I was trusted to read off those measurements so no one had to come down off a ladder to check things, and read the tape measure from the bottom and call out appropriate adjustments before a trim line is drawn. Dad goes down, Grandpa goes up, he checks the measurement again and makes his own mark. If they match, they cut. If they don't, they discuss how they made the measurement to troubleshoot why they got different results, and then we did it again to ensure understanding had been reached.
Measure until its consistant, accept human error, accept it happens All The Time, and check things until You Are Certain. THEN trim material.
A similar addage is learned in sewing; measure twice, cut once.
Mathamatics teaches guess and check, a handy principal in fibercrafts of all kinds.
Those scrap blocks I mentioned? Taught me about mechanical forces like gravity, friction, weight distribution across multiple shapes and which shapes built up best without falling over or bracing; all principals I applied later not only in crafting DIY stuff around the house but also within my artistic practice when imagining and arting locations, clothing, and people.
A lot of practical knowledge gets locked behind the barrier of Theoretical Physics ( i.e when its just numbers on paper Theorizing On How A Thing May Work In Real Space ) before an institution will let ya get your brain onto some real instruction. But there's a lotta things you can do to learn these things in your own home, and most are forms of play or creative hobbies.
Near everything you do with your body and brain together benifits both, in skill and theorizing on future intentions as they go from an idea to something others can SEE and sometimes even HOLD IN THEIR HANDS.
I still firmly beleive the ability to idiate upon something until one figures out How To Show It To Someone Else is truely the closest humans get to Actual Magic, and exists somewhere within everything people make or actuate with their physical person. And I think that undefinable Magic is what we call Art. The Arts. Crafting, creative, visual, audio, narrative, culinary, woodworks, masonry, smithing, fiberworks, fabrics, tailoring, and more than I even know to name because the catagory of Things People Imagine And Then Make Real is PRETTY FREAKIN WIDE.
These things are not sperate from the "hard" bodies of study and practice, math used to be considered magical and esoteric, and only became respectable when Accurate Measurement caused less people to die at the Apothocary, birthing the More Respectable Alchemist, and later into just Chemist-- all based on Math; an imagined system applied to the real world, bounded on proven precepts that are applied over and over and over to LITERALLY ANYTHING we can try it on to see If It Still Tracks Or We Missed Something-- thus why Gravity Is A Theory, and why Theory is one of the strongest words in scientific study, physics, and so on; it means It has Survived Years Of Genuine And Strenious Testing, Found Every Way It Was Wrong, And Continue Tweaking And Testing And CALIBRATING Our Imagined Incraments To Measure The World And Think More Accurately About Future Intentions.
Like the practice of all crafts and arts.
I guess this is Art Theory now? 🤷🏼

one of my favorite comfort hcs is still the baltics + poland owning and renovating a cabin in the middle of nowhere, just to have a place to be a community without hiding their identity history has taught them all skills in how to make and maintain a homestead from next to nothing. eduard makes sure there is electricity and wifi, feliks is actually really good at renovating everything from a leaking ceiling to old plumbing, tolys makes sure there is a garden with food and medicinal plants and chickens and also just places to chill raivis has ingenious ideas for all those weird corners in old houses that require clever solutions, like off-the-grid water and heating systems, and also paints beautiful flower patterns on the doors and windows. they keep the small things they collected from over the years there and sometimes there are fights and bickering over memorabilia from specific time periods being on display or which food is prefered, but overall its a community building with enough corners to hide in and a fireplace to gather in front of and a garden to have parties in, with guest bedrooms and a pantry for home-brewed beer and pickled veggies from the garden, and its comfortable and safe
Aww that's a sweet idea! It's fun you bring it up because I've been thinking about P.oland and the B.altic's DIY skills recently after watching a video about a dude failing to plaster the ceiling and going yeah this would be Ed hahah. Like he has so many many skills but this wouldn't be one of them. I also can see Feliks as a mechanic. One wouldn't think so at first glance and he also doesn't quite like to get his hands dirty but if there is no other way around it he'll get things done and can even fix a sink it's just hard to get him to do it pffft. Lat is the home decor aesthetic person™ Feliks strives to be but never will and Liet is the only one who can drive a nail into the wall and succeed without making a fuss about it haha.

How To Go Off Grid Now With No Money
In today’s fast-paced world, the concept of going off-grid and living a more ecojoyful and self-sufficient lifestyle has gained tremendous popularity. However, many individuals believe that making such a significant lifestyle change requires a considerable amount of money. The truth is, with creativity, resourcefulness, and determination, it is entirely possible to transition to an off-grid lifestyle with little to no financial investment. This guide will walk you through practical steps to achieve this dream without breaking the bank.
1. Finding Free or Affordable Land
One of the biggest challenges in going off-grid is securing a piece of land to call your own. Fortunately, there are ways to acquire land without a hefty price tag.
Seeking Out Land Grants and Donations
There are organizations and local governments that offer land grants or donations, particularly in rural areas that are looking to attract new residents. These programs often require you to commit to living on the land for a set number of years and contributing to the local community, which can be a win-win if you're serious about an off-grid lifestyle.
Homesteading and Land Sharing
Another option is to connect with other off-grid enthusiasts who may be willing to share or rent out a portion of their land. This arrangement can reduce your costs significantly and allow you to benefit from the shared knowledge and resources of a community.
Squatting and Adverse Possession
While not the most traditional route, squatting on unused land is an option that some have pursued. Over time, with the proper legal understanding, this can lead to adverse possession, where you can gain legal ownership of the land. This approach requires thorough research into local laws and a willingness to navigate potential legal challenges.
2. Building a Shelter with Recycled Materials
Constructing a shelter doesn’t have to be an expensive endeavor. With the right approach, you can build a comfortable home using recycled and natural materials.
Utilizing Reclaimed Wood and Pallets
Reclaimed wood and pallets are often available for free or at a low cost from construction sites, businesses, or online marketplaces. With some basic carpentry skills, these materials can be transformed into a sturdy and ecojoyful off-grid home. Pallets, in particular, are versatile and can be used for everything from walls to furniture.
Earthships and Cob Houses
Earthships and cob houses are types of sustainable architecture that use natural and recycled materials like earth, clay, and glass bottles. These structures are highly efficient, insulating, and can be built with little to no money. The building process can be labor-intensive, but with the help of volunteers or community members, it’s a feasible option.
Alternative Shelters
Consider unconventional shelters like yurts, shipping containers, or tiny homes on wheels. These can often be sourced affordably and adapted to off-grid living. Yurts and tiny homes offer mobility, while shipping containers provide durability and a solid foundation for a permanent residence.
3. Harnessing Free or Low-Cost Energy Sources
Living off the grid means generating your own power, but this doesn’t have to be expensive. There are various methods to harness energy without spending a fortune.
Solar Power on a Budget
Solar panels are a common choice for off-grid energy, but new systems can be costly. Instead, look for used or discounted solar panels online or through local classifieds. DIY solar panel kits are another budget-friendly option, allowing you to build your own system at a fraction of the cost.
Wind Power
If you’re in a windy area, consider building your own wind turbine. There are many tutorials available online that guide you through the process using inexpensive materials. Wind power can complement solar energy, providing power during cloudy or stormy weather.
Micro-Hydro Power
For those with access to a flowing water source, micro-hydro power is an efficient way to generate electricity. Building a small-scale hydroelectric system can be done with minimal investment, and it provides a consistent power supply, especially during the night or in winter months.
4. Sourcing Food Sustainably and for Free
Growing your own food and foraging are key components of off-grid living. With some planning and knowledge, you can sustain yourself without spending much on groceries.
Starting a Garden with Seed Swaps and Cuttings
Starting a garden doesn’t require purchasing expensive seeds or plants. Participate in local seed swaps, where gardeners exchange seeds and cuttings for free. You can also propagate plants from kitchen scraps, such as potatoes, onions, and herbs, to kickstart your garden.
Foraging and Wildcrafting
Foraging for wild edibles is an excellent way to supplement your diet. Learn about the local flora and fauna in your area to identify edible plants, fruits, and mushrooms. This not only provides free food but also helps you connect with nature on a deeper level. Wildcrafting, or harvesting plants for medicinal or culinary purposes, can also be an essential skill in off-grid living.
Raising Livestock on a Shoestring Budget
If you have space, consider raising small livestock like chickens, rabbits, or goats. These animals are relatively low-cost to maintain and provide a steady supply of eggs, meat, and dairy. You can often acquire animals for free through online ads or by connecting with local farmers looking to downsize their flocks or herds.
5. Water Collection and Conservation
Access to clean water is essential for off-grid living, and with a bit of ingenuity, you can secure a water supply without relying on municipal systems.
Rainwater Harvesting
Rainwater harvesting is one of the most straightforward and cost-effective methods of collecting water. By setting up a simple gutter and barrel system, you can collect and store rainwater for drinking, cooking, and irrigation. Ensure that you have proper filtration and purification systems in place to make the water safe for consumption.
Using Natural Water Sources
If you live near a natural water source, such as a river, lake, or spring, you can set up a gravity-fed water system. This method requires some initial work to install pipes and filters, but it provides a reliable water supply with minimal ongoing costs. Be sure to check local regulations regarding water rights before using natural sources.
Water Conservation Techniques
To minimize your water usage, implement water conservation techniques such as greywater recycling and composting toilets. Greywater systems reuse water from sinks and showers for irrigation, reducing the need for fresh water. Composting toilets convert waste into compost, eliminating the need for a septic system and conserving water.

Is Solar Inverter Installation DIY-able? What You MUST Know

Imagine you just got solar panels. You're excited to save money and help the planet. Then, you realize the inverter needs to be installed. Can you do it yourself?
A solar inverter functions as the key element of your solar energy system. It transforms the direct current (DC) electricity produced by your solar panels into alternating current (AC) electricity, making it appropriate for household use.
Can you DIY solar inverter installation? Technically, yes, but it's usually not a good idea. This article covers what you need to know about safety, permits, technical stuff, and possible problems.
Understanding the Complexity: Why Inverter Installation Isn't Simple
Installing an inverter is not easy. It's more than just plugging things in. It can be dangerous. Don't try this if you aren't confident.
Electrical Expertise Required
You need good electrical skills. This includes understanding AC/DC wiring, voltage, current, and grounding.
Messing with electricity can cause shocks and fires. It can also damage your equipment. Electrical work requires precision.
Be honest about your electrical skills. Are you truly ready for this task?
Inverter Types and Compatibility
There are string inverters, microinverters, and hybrid inverters. Each has its own way of being installed. Not all inverters work with all solar panels.
If things don't match, your system won't work well. It might even break. A solar inverter must be compatible.
Weight and Mounting Considerations
Inverters can be heavy. You need strong mounting hardware. It must be installed correctly. It's also important to choose an installation location that will help keep the unit cool to prevent overheating.
A falling inverter can cause damage. It can also hurt someone. Consider the weight carefully.
Permits and Regulations: Navigating the Bureaucracy
Solar projects often need permits and inspections. Make sure you're following the rules. Otherwise, you might face big penalties.
Local Codes and Inspections
You may need electrical and building permits. The local government checks your work. They make sure it's safe.
If you don't follow code, you could face fines. Your system might even get shut down. Regulations matter.
Utility Interconnection Agreements
You must connect your system to the power grid safely. Your utility company has rules for this. Paperwork is involved.
Without their approval, you can't send extra energy back to the grid. The utility needs to sign off.
Step-by-Step Overview (If You're Really Determined)
Disclaimer: This is NOT an endorsement of DIY. It's for informational purposes only. Hire a professional if you're unsure.
Gathering Tools and Materials
Safety glasses and gloves
Screwdrivers and wrenches
Voltage tester
Wire stripper
Appropriate wiring
Mounting hardware
Use quality tools and materials. This helps to ensure safety and the job is done right.
Wiring and Connections
Create a link between the inverter and the solar panels.
Connect the inverter to your electrical panel.
Ensure proper grounding.
Double-check polarity.
Be extremely careful with wiring. One slip up can be dangerous.
Testing and Commissioning
Test the inverter after installation.
Watch its performance.
Look for problems.
Professional commissioning is best for efficiency. Get it checked by an expert.
The Smarter Choice: Hiring a Qualified Solar Installer
A professional installer offers many advantages. It might be a better decision overall. Let them handle it.
Benefits of Professional Installation
Expertise and experience
Safety and compliance
Warranty and insurance
Permit handling
A solar installer knows what to do and ensures everything is correct. They reduce risks.
"Professional solar installation ensures safety, compliance, and optimized system performance," says Jangid Solar, a certified solar installer.
Finding a Reputable Installer
Check licenses and insurance.
Read reviews and ask for references.
Get multiple quotes.
Research your installer carefully. Choose someone with a good record.
Cost Analysis: DIY vs. Professional Installation
Think about both upfront and long-term costs. DIY can seem cheaper, but not always. Know the whole picture.
Upfront Costs
DIY saves on labor, but you pay for tools and materials. Professional installation includes labor costs. Calculate everything.
Long-Term Savings and Risks
Professionals optimize performance which may result in long-term savings. DIY mistakes can be pricey. Consider the risks.
Conclusion
Installing a solar inverter yourself is complex and risky. While it's technically possible, it's usually not recommended for most homeowners.
Professional installation provides safety, compliance, better performance, and peace of mind. For a safe and efficient solar system, invest in a qualified installer.

The VEM.
I'd made the decision of wanting to pursue van life some years ago but only within the past 6 months or so had this possibility turned to reality.
At first I had considered creating my own custom conversion from a van shell, as this would have allowed me to fine tune all aspects of the van to best suit me - having previous knowledge in the building industry and enough DIY aptitude to get by I began the planning process - though I soon realised I'd severely underestimated the time in required to ensure a conversion standard solid enough for full time living.
Thus I switched plans and instead spent countless hours trawling dedicated van conversion websites, Facebook marketplace and even eBay in search of something that ticked all my boxes.
There were a few finalists in the spreadsheets I'd made (my natural state of over-planning may become a clear running theme throughout my posts) and after being pipped to the post on my first place choice by another buyer, I knew that a good van at the right price would not stay on the market for long.
Disheartened I returned to my search, as there were just enough cons for my other shortlisted vans to talk myself out of wanting them, and then as if a gift from Gaia herself, a new advert was posted which seemed like the ideal van/home.
A lovely couple in Bristol (shoutout Will & Meera!) had purchased a van shell & spent over a year converting it on the drive of their parents house - and I personally think for first-timers, they did a truly incredible job. This is evidently echoed though the large number of followers they gained by documenting the whole conversion on social media, amassing millions of views across Tik-Tok / Instagram & even feel good newspaper articles of how anyone with a bit of knowledge and a lot of hard work can achieve something amazing.
Jealousy is an ugly colour, but I would be remiss to not say this made me feel as though I should have continued with my initial DIY conversion plan, though dwelling on the past will never lead to a healthy future and I'm comfortable enough to admit that although the final product would have been truly mine, it doubt it would have reached such high standards.
Once completed, they put the van through it's paces by touring Europe for nearly a year with their cat Lola - proving that they'd successfully created a van suitable for full time living in almost all scenarios which was enough for me to know it would be suitable for my journey across the UK & potentially beyond.
A short trip to Bristol later and a nervous drive home(!), I was proud to finally be moving in the direction of the next part of my life and certainly felt more comfortable about selling my house, knowing one major checklist item had been ticked off.
As for the van itself, it has just about everything one could need for a comfortable life-on-the-go; including a multitude of storage drawers, cupboards and spaces for my clothes & food, a kitchen area with sink, a gas hob/grill/oven, a 12v Fridge, a sofa (converting to seats and a table when needed), a nearly double bed, a shower, a composting toilet, a skylight, storage space in the 'garage' under the bed & even a mini projector with pull down screen!
With 100L of water, 560Ah of leisure battery power (separate from the engine battery, for those wondering), 320W of solar power, 25L LPG tank and a hot air/water heater - the van truly allows for off grid living, in a rather cute cottage-core style.

Since the van had been transformed to such a wonderful space, there was little I needed to change myself - outside of a new mattress, fixing/replacing the old cab radio and adding Starlink internet (obligatory fuck Elon...), I was ready to go.
Although somewhat counter to the typical nomadic lifestyle; music, photo editing and socialising in Discord played quite a heavy role in my pre-van life and I knew that it may come as too much of a shock to the system to only have sporadic access to these - thus the the addition of Starlink, which provided I have a clear view of the sky anywhere in the UK, allows me to continue with these aspects of my life in my downtime.
Without wanting to dox myself too much, the reason behind the name of this blog (and by extension the name of the van itself) is derived from part of the vehicles numberplate, 'VEM' - thus Vemmy was born. I'm still a little surprised the previous owners had not named the van at all, considering something seemingly so obvious and coincidentally close to 'van' was printed on the front!
Being lucky is not something I'd typically associate with myself, but I know I'm rather lucky to have such an amazing place to call home - wherever that place may be.

Installing Solar-Powered Electrical Systems in Hawaii
Hawaii’s abundant sunshine makes it an ideal location for solar energy. Harnessing this renewable resource not only reduces electricity costs but also supports a sustainable future. If you're considering installing solar-powered electrical systems in Hawaii, you're taking a smart step towards energy independence and eco-conscious living. Here’s a guide to help you understand the process and why working with a reliable partner like Amcor Construction LLC in Honolulu can make all the difference.
Why Choose Solar in Hawaii?
Sunlight Abundance: Hawaii enjoys some of the highest levels of solar radiation in the U.S., making solar power incredibly efficient.
High Electricity Costs: The state's electricity rates are among the highest in the country. Solar energy offers a significant reduction in monthly bills.
Environmental Benefits: Switching to solar reduces carbon emissions, helping to preserve Hawaii’s natural beauty for generations to come.
Tax Incentives and Rebates: Hawaii offers substantial state and federal incentives for solar installations, lowering the upfront costs.
Key Steps in Installing Solar Systems
Initial Assessment: Start with a site assessment to evaluate your home or building’s solar potential. This includes analyzing roof orientation, shading, and available space.
System Design: A professional solar company will design a custom system tailored to your energy needs. This involves selecting the right panels, inverters, and batteries for optimal performance.
Permits and Approvals: Solar installations require permits and adherence to local building codes. In Hawaii, these regulations ensure safety and compliance with environmental standards.
Installation: The actual installation involves mounting solar panels, connecting the electrical components, and integrating the system with your existing grid.
Inspection and Activation: Once installed, your system undergoes inspections to ensure it meets local regulations. After approval, it’s ready to start generating power!
Benefits of Professional Installation
While DIY solar kits exist, a professional installation ensures the system is safe, efficient, and compliant with local codes. In Hawaii, where weather conditions can be challenging, it’s crucial to have a system designed and installed to withstand high humidity, salt air, and occasional storms.

Along the way, we'll share inspiring stories of those who have successfully embarked on this life-changing journey and provide valuable resources to help you embrace the adventure of off-grid living. ```html
7 Inspiring Tips For A Successful Off-Grid Living Journey
Have you ever dreamed of unplugging from the chaos, trading the hum of streetlights for starlit skies, and waking up to the sound of birds instead of alarm clocks? Off-grid living is a bold adventure, but it’s not just about escaping the grid—it’s about embracing freedom, sustainability, and self-reliance. After years of living off-grid, I’ve learned a thing or two (mostly the hard way), and I’m here to share some gems to make your journey smoother.
1. Master the Art of Water Management
Your relationship with water will change profoundly. It’s no longer just a *tap-turning convenience*—it’s a resource you must capture, value, and protect. Install rainwater collection systems, learn to filter naturally, and realize that every drop counts. Trust me, nothing humbles you more than running out of water in the middle of a summer heatwave.
2. Start Small, Grow Big
Don’t try to build an entire homestead overnight. Begin with a few essential systems like solar power, water, and a garden, then expand as you learn. My biggest mistake was thinking I needed everything perfect on Day One, but the truth is, off-grid living is a *journey* not a destination.
3. Get Comfortable with Discomfort
Let’s be real—off-grid living is not Instagram-perfect sunsets every day. There will be cold mornings, power hiccups, and days when things just don’t work. But those challenges build resilience and, oddly enough, make the victories even sweeter. As I like to say, *“There’s no Wi-Fi in nature, but the connection is stronger.”*
4. Build Community, Even Off-Grid
Going off-grid doesn’t mean cutting yourself off from people. In fact, you’ll probably need a network more than ever, whether it’s for knowledge-sharing, bartering, or an extra pair of hands. I once traded a basket of tomatoes for help fixing my solar inverter—it was one of the best “deals” of my life.
5. Learn to Love the Land
Living off-grid is as much about nurturing the land as it is about it nurturing you. Observe the seasons, understand your soil, and work with nature, not against it. It’s a humbling experience to realize that the earth has its own timeline—you’re not in charge, and that’s a good thing.
6. Budget for the Unexpected
Surprises are inevitable—equipment will break, storms will test your systems, and unanticipated costs will arise. A contingency fund can save you a world of stress. When my solar battery bank failed unexpectedly, that little financial buffer was a lifesaver.
7. Stay Curious and Keep Learning
Off-grid living is an ongoing education. From DIY construction to permaculture to renewable energy, there’s always something new to learn. ***Embrace the role of a lifelong student***—curiosity is your most valuable tool out here.
“Off-grid living isn’t just a lifestyle; it’s a mindset. It’s about trading convenience for connection, instant gratification for deep satisfaction, and chaos for clarity.”
So, are you ready to start your off-grid adventure? The journey will challenge you, inspire you, and, most importantly, awaken a deeper connection to the world around you. And remember, every step forward—no matter how small—is progress.
