The door to her study opens without warning and Daedín leads in a Man covered in dust from the road, staring at everything around him wide-eyed.
“I will leave you to your own introductions,” Daedín says brusquely in Sindarin, turning on her heel and vanishing again before the door has even finished swinging shut.
They stand in silence for several awkward minutes (most of which Silmeniel spends grumbling silently about Daedín and the conspicuous lack of anything at all resembling an explanation) before the Man speaks in halting Sindarin. “I am Isedd, son of Téohere. I was sent from Imladris to…” he makes a face, searching the air as if it will give him the words. “Questions?” he finishes hopefully. Silmeniel nearly laughs.
“You must be the one Lithion mentioned in his letter,” she says, smiling at the relief in his face when she forgoes the elven tongue. “I am Silmeniel. Come in, sit. Tell me what exactly sends a Rohir all the way to Imladris and then convinces him to brave the Dwimordene.” Isedd scratches at his head. Really, Daedín! You could at least have let him clean himself up first.
“It’s a long story,” he says. She laughs.
“It would have to be long indeed to test my patience.” He shrugs, settling gingerly in one of her cushioned chairs and begins.
It is a rather long story, but far shorter than many she knows.
“You learned this method of healing from the farmer who took you in>” she says, noting details on a scrap of paper.
“Yes.”
“And who did they learn it from?”
“Let me check.” His notes are impressively detailed, tracing the lineage of teachers back as far as he could, both on his own and with Lithion’s aid in Imladris. “Lithion thought it might have come from an elf several generations back, someone named Brithial of…” he flips through his notes. “Where was he from…”
“Brithial…” Silmeniel murmurs to herself, searching the shelves of her study. I know the name… maybe in- no, those letters were lost with the Havens. “It is strange, that for a question of healing you would be sent here. I would have sent you to Imladris, but they have sent you here instead.”
“There were very few people there that I saw,” Isedd says. He hesitates. “There was… a strange feeling there. Almost like… ah, I don’t know. Nevermind. Lithion told me I should try again once I learned what I could here.”
“I can answer questions of history far better than anything of healing.” She holds back a sigh at the thought of the shadow over Imladris. “I don’t know how much longer any of us will be here to give you answers, though.” She reaches for an old journal while Isedd watches her curiously.

“....what?”
“I knew I recognized the name Brithial. He was a student of a friend of mine in Lindon.” She pages through the journal, from Linhalwen, one of Sileär’s old sailors. “She had learned from one of Finrod’s folk, and they from… well, ultimately from the Ainur themselves.” She stops on the entry she sought, one bemoaning the difficulties students of this particular method had when working with those of other schools. “Cilinlótë- this was long before Brithial’s time- was a servant of Vairë for a time, but later entered the service of Estë.” Isedd stares. “The Weaver and the Healer,” Silmeniel adds.
“Oh,” Isedd says, voice perfectly neutral.
“It made sense, to Cilinlótë at least, to continue to work through weaving, even when healing. I doubt he ever meant to pass down his technique quite like this. With Vairë…” Silmeniel trails off, finally noticing the blankness in Isedd’s face. “You don’t know who Vairë or Estë are.”
“Not at all.”
“Valier, Queens of the Valar in Aman.”
“...what’s a Valar?” She blinks. Right.
“Vala. One Vala, many Valar. You said you came here from Imladris?”
Isedd shrugs helplessly. “I didn’t stay long, and I had other questions.”
Silmeniel closes the journal carefully and taps it idly. “You should have the answers you need about the history of this particular power, but I’m afraid I will be no help with the rest of your problems with it.” She looks out the high windows at the darkening trees. “But it is late now, and you must be weary and hungry. I don’t know what arrangements might be made already, but if you would like, you are welcome to join my wife and I for a meal and some rest.”
She doesn’t expect the surge of naked relief on his face. “I would gladly accept it. I was brought straight here from the edge of the forest and wasn’t sure if I would even be welcome here.”
Daedín! She will have words with the sentinel later. “Then come, enjoy the hospitality of the last days of Laurelindórenan, Rohir.”

Ocean Cleanup's second attempt to remove plastic from the sea is now in full swing

Under the name 'Jenny', the second version of the plastic catcher of the Dutch The Ocean Cleanup floats through the large plastic soup in the ocean. If all goes well, this new version can catch more plastic faster than the predecessor.
The second system is in many ways the opposite of the previous one. It is no longer a long, v-shaped barrier, but a round shape. At the back of the semicircle hangs a large garbage bag, where the waste that the barrier encounters along the way eventually ends up. A ship can take this net every once in a while to bring the plastic ashore. The Ocean Cleanup already sells (small) products made from ocean plastic.
But the biggest difference with System 001 is the presence of people. Initially Boyan Slat, the inventor of the system to remove plastic from the ocean, caused a hype with an idea that is as simple as it is remarkable: you leave a large barrier for years in the maelstrom where all the plastic clumps together, and thus catches all the plastic from the oceans.
Plastic floats away
But ever since Slat got this idea (which started as a high school profile paper) in 2014, reality has turned out to be recalcitrant. The 'passive' system was unable to hold onto the plastic because it was moving too fast or too slow relative to the plastic itself. Several updates, including a parachute, did not help.
That is why Slat has abandoned the self-steering idea. From now on, two manned ships will sail into the ocean, each pulling one end of the barrier through the plastic soup. At a speed of almost three kilometers per hour, the ships drag the plastic scooper through the sea just slowly enough for the barrier to take the plastic with it, but not let it go.
800 meter long trunk
It is the first large-scale project of The Ocean Cleanup (Jenny is 800 meters long). The organization will extensively test this new system in the coming weeks. These tests should show whether there will eventually be several Jenny's who will tackle the plastic soup. How much plastic can this system now capture, and is it all commercially viable? That should become apparent in the coming weeks.
The Ocean Cleanup no longer focuses solely on the oceans: the rivers must also be clean.
The Ocean Cleanup is also expanding its operations to the world's most polluting rivers. A thousand rivers (of the more than 100,000 rivers worldwide) are jointly responsible for 80 percent of the plastic waste that ends up in our oceans. “If you really want to make the oceans plastic-free, you first have to stop the supply of plastic waste,” Slat explains in a press release from 2019.
A new technology, which The Ocean Cleanup has been developing since 2015, should ensure this. The so-called Interceptor is capable of fishing 50,000 kilos of waste per day from rivers. Under optimal conditions, it is even 100,000 kilos.
The Interceptor is a floating barrier, attached to the riverbed, that captures plastic waste. The barrier only floats at the height where plastic waste floats and therefore poses no danger to animals or ships.
