That previous anon ask had me thinking and this is a thought I've had for awhile but im nervous to share it but I'm going to do it-

1. He for sure has a tumblr account- he said he used to have one as a teen and the 'babygirl' images on his camera roll is only cementing that as a fact.

I’m not sure if America does this much, but from where I am, a grade is able to travel to a different country for around a week or two for educational purposes (e.g Italy, France, Etc.) so bloodstained rotn 2 is likely going to be announced this year. it should be something i'm really excited about, but conversely i have incredibly low expectations. because, over time, i've grown to lowkey hate rotn 1. here's why: i played the switch version first, which wasn't gonna help with my first impressions. but i've since played on pc with fixed framerate and better graphics? and it's still the ugliest castlevania i've ever played. i just wrote a long rant about 2d games being shoehorned into 3d, so i won't go back into that. but this game is such good proof of 2.5d consistently making 2d games worse. or that's the only sense i can make of one of the kings of beautiful 2d suddenly making one of the most hideous 2.5d games. i say that, but iga also made the 3d castlevania games on ps2. of all the problems with those games, the visuals weren't one of them. and then there's "dracula x chronicles", the 2.5d remake of rondo. even tho i was one of the many who mostly bought that game for the unlockable sotn and rondo PORTS (orig 2d rondo was much better), the remake wasn't horrible visually. the polygons and lighting didn't feel like clownvomit like it does in bs rotn. everything with rotn just feels amateur, low budget, and incompetent. the way enemies die by just fizzling out their polygons is so hideous. it feels like a budget mobile game from 2012. remember the weird occasional 3d that was in sotn? imagine an entire game made from that, but lacking any of the charm. to wrap it up in a bow, the graphics suck. but it isn't just the raw graphics, it's also the art direction. if i had one word to sum up the art, it'd be "uninspired". nothing feels like an artist made this, outside of a handful of moments. this is "paint by numbers castlevania" at it's worst. sure, games like cv cotm were a bit bland, and sometimes cv could feel somewhat formulaic? but rotn took mediocrity to a whole new level. do you like grey caves? do you like grey stone buildings? do you want your castlevania to look like the overworld in fallout 3? welcome to bloodstained ritual of the night! if i were avgn, i'd be like "bloodstained more like shitstained, everything looks like brown and grey ASS" idfk. maybe things would be better if they understood how to use lighting effects, but they don't so we'll never know. cover the already ugly visuals in shitoil and then... well my inner avgn has returned so i'll digress. the areas are all samey and boring, generally feeling like placeholders they never bothered to fix. the music sucks. it feels mostly generic and there's very little melody to be found in the tracks. it's hard to believe yamane had any involvement in this. except... when you go play bs curse of the moon, suddenly it makes sense. because there's melody hidden in the composition, but the execution is just bad. almost like the devs went to yamane and asked her to make things less melodic and more "atmospheric". idk what happened, maybe it was just rushed. but i've never known ANY castlevania to have unmemorable music. and yet rotn somehow pulls it off. i'm def biased, but a cv without good music isn't a castlevania at all.

the gameplay seems... fine? but it's just executed poorly. i've seen people complain about "sotn weapon variety plus aos ability variety is overwhelming", but actually that's one of the only things they did right. as i'm typing this hatepost, suddenly i'm finding myself "wanting to play" just to unlock all the fun abilities and gear. but no, then i remember how clumsy it all is. on top of that, the devs are morons and constantly added "balance patches", for a singleplayer game, that nerfed most of the fun things into the ground. finding broken or super powerful gear is part of what makes castlevania so fun, fuck these idiot bs devs. they don't understand why cv is good. not at all. before i forget, there's also way too much forced grinding and dumb sidemissions for basic unlocks. i don't need world of warcraft fetchquests in my castlevanias, sorry. lastly, there's kickstarter. i hate what kickstarter does to games. don't get me wrong, undertale was a kickstarter game, and that's one of the best games ever made. but undertale somehow finished development and met all its kickstarter goals in a bit over 2 years. even though it was developed by just one dude and an artist. undertale released in a finished form, too. bs, on the flipside, had a whole development studio, a fucking publisher, AND a whole lot more money (set crowdfunding records iiirc). but it only just recently finished delivering on it's development promises. that's like 10 years. and the promises were often barely fulfilled, like there are compromises everywhere. you have ks games like shovelknight, which take forever to finish releasing content (but all the content is really good, and feels like a full game at launch). then you have ks games like shenmue 3, which release "finished" but looks and feels like shit. bs rotn is the worst of both worlds. when i played bloodstained at launch, that was it's one chance. sorry, but if i go to a restaurant for the first time and the food is bland and the experience is bad? i'm not gonna go back. i have replayed every castlevania, even ones like cv cotm that i wasn't huge on. i have not replayed bs rotn and i don't see that changing any time soon. i tried somewhat recently, with most of the new content? still felt shit. lost interest in under an hour (and that was with the blodless content which was comparatively good).

adding on to the disaster which is bloodstained, we then have the "8bit game" goal. which resulted in bs cotm. which is, bizarrely, absolutely incredible. it's like a spiritual successor to akumajou densetsu (the good version of cv3). unlike rotn, almost every song is awesome and memorable. the gameplay is great. the areas are rad as fuck. it's legit amazing and the only truly good thing to come out of the whole series. cotm 2 isn't as good, but it still feels like magic compared to rotn. and guess what? both are 2d. can you believe it? iga makes a 2d game and it's incredible, right after making a 2.5d game that was dogshit. maybe he shouldn't fuck with 3d anymore? will he get a clue? probably not. it's frustrating to see one of my heroes of game development going in such a dumb direction. sorta reminding me of how aonuma "doesn't understand why people want pre-botw zelda elements back". or miyazaki "doesn't know why elden ring was so successful" and turns around and regresses the fuck out of the gameplay with the miserable tryhard dlc. i complain about zelda and elden, but i would still rather play totk or elden 100x over bloodstained rotn. even though iga seems to be remaining more "faithful" to his genre, his execution is somehow worse. in my heart, whether it's logical or not, i blame kickstarter. to me, bs rotn was a ks scam game. a soulless imitation of cv sotn, that held less value than a low effort fanmod of a real castlevania. and i TRIED to like it. i put up a lot of money for it's kickstarter, and was an apologist of all it's bullshit for years. but i can't do it anymore. it's a bad castlevania. maybe the worst. so am i excited for rotn 2? not really. there's a faint glimmer of hope knowing it won't be another kickstarter game, and that they're using all the money they made from the first one to make it (prob a significant sum, they certainly weren't using their profit to fix the orig game, the new content is budget/slow as hell). and they're gonna try and fix the art direction, which "couldn't get any worse" except they plan to make it more realistic "like final fantasy 7 remake". why? ok rant over. bs cotm sucked. i hope cotm 2 won't suck so bad. but i'm not holding my breath.

Ah. Hm. Blackhole I guess? The ending isn’t angst though it’s just a more intense fic.

7. What’s the fic you wrote with the happiest ending?

I think Float is very happy. It makes me smile every time I read it. Also the ending of Cobalt makes me so good. I want to rewrite Cobalt though its missing something. I posted it too soon.

8. Do you get hate on fics?

Back in my YGO days I got some but I just ignored it. Usually they were just about me not finishing a fic so….yeah I get it heh

9. Do you write smut? If so, what kind?

Yep. I’m an adult. I can write and enjoy smut.

But in all seriousness I do and I encourage anyone who is hesitant to write about sex, to just do it for yourself if you ever want to. You never have to post it, you can just write what you want and delete it, or keep it for yourself. Or never write about sex at all. I'll just say, getting back into this part of myself after not writing it for years has been so beneficial for my mental health. It helps me process and work through things. And writing gives me the opportunity to do that.

10. Do you write crossovers?

Well not right now, but I do know a lot about a certain mp100xOPM AU by @sodasexual and may or may not write something in that verse one day. Already drawing fanart for it so.... fanfics are likely gonna happen one day!

Hm. Puzzleshipping is my origin story. But something about Terumob really hits me in a place that I can’t describe. I just adore them.

15. What’s a WIP you want to finish but doubt you ever will?

Hmmm I have a couple one-shots I wanna write and I may not write them all.

16. What are your writing strengths?

I love writing POV descriptions of emotions. And I like to hope I’m good at it. Blackhole is this. It’s a mess of words and descriptions that I can just chew on and I love writing it. I think my recent Terumob oneshots kinda get into that space too. I like to hope that is a strength. But yeah it seems to resonate with people so I think it’s a strength?

I also think dialogue has always come easy to me. I feel like it’s the easiest thing for me to write and I hope it is realistic.

17. What are your writing weaknesses?

Ah.... I am terrible with consistency. I forget things and sometimes run off down paths. I also repeat myself a lot and like to describe every movement a character makes which can bog down scenes.

I have so written myself into a corner and had to weasel my way out of it hahaha This is why I am trying to talk about my stories more to friends so I DON'T do that again.

18. Thoughts on writing dialogue in another language in fic?

I did this a bit but I don’t anymore. It’s just too much mental work for me.

20. Favorite fic you’ve written?

I think Black Sweatshirt, my current ageswap fic, will be my fav. It’s the most expansive writing I have done probably ever in my life. There are multiple plot lines, scenes that have already made me cry, and an ending that I just cannot wait to share with the world. I hope others enjoy it as much as I do, and I can deliver on this story.

The other one is a series called Safe Space which is a series of one-off stories touching on different emotions Shigeo has to process post-canon. Exploring the gray areas of forgiveness, confessions, grudges, anger, and love. I think I will be writing that on the side as I do other things but I love it to pieces. It means a lot to me and i hope to one day share it.

here's my ranking of some of the playline eugene dolls because the lack of top tier eugene dolls is so sick and twisted...

#1: disney store 2020

i really like this face mold and screening! the best eugene doll the bar is in hell. there's still something missing but i'm not going to be fussy. though they're significantly better than some, i'm not sure if i'm enjoying the clothes 100%. i like the pattern they used for his doublet to make it movie accurate, but i believe they could've gotten different fabrics for it and the belt. though we should thank god day and night that the details aren't printed on a paper like fabric. this is five stars for modern doll standards... there should be a classic doll like him. a shame that we've never seen this doll again... he gets a reluctant 10/10 from me.

#2: mattel (old)

hate hate hate hateee that face mold + screening, fucking nasty. though he looks like he's gonna scam the fuck out of you so accurate for flynn rider i guess. why is he so high then if you hate him so fucking much you might ask. it's the clothes and his accessories. i really like that his doublet is movie accurate and (fake) leather. his belt is very detailed!! so is his satchel. like the boots, though it's kinda hard to fuck up the boots so not giving him any points for his boots. my only gripe is that his pants' aren't very great. should've been velcro or snaps instead of that elastic.. he's destined to give justin biebs circa 2010 but it's ok. can be fixed if you have trust in your sewing. also don't like that he has elastic hips.. he has GOLDEN ELASTICS tho. monster high ghouls.. eat your hearts out. 8/10. solely for how much i like his doublet and belt.

#3: older disney store variants

that hair naurrrr they didn't even bother with like carving some details. they couldn't get my man's visage right. his goatee is evil. the mold itself is fine, it's just the screening i don't like. clothes are mid :/ i don't hate them but i don't particularly like them. i definitely know at least 3 men that look like these dolls. not great but serviceable. 7/10.

4: mattel (new)

THEEEE QUALITY DROP! CLAP FOR THE QUALITY DROP! the printed on details?? the painted on pants????? with a bad face mold & screening combo? JAILLLLLLLLLLLLL!! i like the hair, the belt with the pouch and the boots though. old mattel slays hard and this one def can't hold a candle to him... but i prefer this color palette i guess.. he looks marginally cuter than his stock image irl tho. 5.5/10

#5: simba toys

he's just a little boyyyy !! wandering around the cityyyyy :3 his proportions are... interesting. but he's cute enough so he can get away with it. his clothes are ok. at least it's not printed on details. i only want this doll because i want to display him with my simba toys rapunzel. she looks so fucked up (affectionate) i love her. this eugene gets a 5/10. though he's also a 10 if you get it you get it sorryyyyy

#6: disney collection/disney store tangled the series

he is show accurate, no doubt. but the show's art style doesn't always work for eugene and in the doll form.. he's just not it 💔 i like the clothes tho. he looks like a parrot (affectionate). i also have personal history with this doll. this set with rapunzel is my bleeding wound. 3/10!

#7: hasbro tangled the series

how has se changed since you first created it? are there any plot ideas or concepts that fell by the wayside?

oh god, let me travel back in time mentally almost 3-4 years or so-

well first off, i rmm that a large foundation of SE was inspired by the Venture Bros? the guild of villains aspect of it most likely cuz i genuinely found that interesting. Dez and Francis were proper like, apprentices to VILLAINY and it was all meant to be a more lighthearted story, of them going on adventures while trying to be “professional criminals” (Dez doing so accidentally). Francis was actually NICER somewhat? and Dez’s family loved him to bits. Carmine was much more of a father figure to Frank (EUGH) and he wasn’t a former nazi? And Maya acted more like a chill business partner/friend to Carmine rather than like, his leash holder of sorts…Carson was also egging to be a prof villain and sucked at it so Hammond had to help her or something

i rmm also that the worldbuilding aspect of SE was ULTRA FLIPPANT? like, i would make just the stupidest/most fantastical shit happen in the timeline for no reason and i think that mainly fell through cuz i ended up wanting to justify everything…and the timeline became so cluttered and chaotic tbh. so much was going on that didn’t make sense, im much happier with the one i have now (smaller/less detailed tho it may be)

i genuinely don’t rmm how the city of Necropolis came to be however. i just knew it was Necropolis and it was BIG and built on top of the ruins of an old city, inspired by the coast spanning megacities in judge dredd. the babel-like structure of the city is entirely new/recent and its no longer in new york (got tired of ny…TBH…)

mmm what else…ah plotlines. i rmm one that primarily featured tugarin as an antag and old foe of Carmine’s and there was gonna be a big confrontation in Soviet Russia or something…tugarin is now like, SUUUUPER background fodder. the villain awards ceremony plotline. dumb asf. i also rmm exploring a plotline where Martians tried to like, pull a transformers 3 and PUSH MARS right next to earth for some reason. it was dumb 😭 lots of nigh world ending events that these kids had to deal with…not anymore!!! and superheroes! that was a major thing. like them being corporate tools and such, and there being a lot of them that the kids had to fight due to aforementioned villainy…thats all def backseat now, there’s like only a handful of people considered supes now, everyone else is just a freak…and as of rn im wondering whether or not to dash everything with ATLAS and the comet and stuff like that…or maybe just redo the lore surrounding them! im unsure

EDIT OMFG LAS NEVADAS!!! how can i forget ok so like, it was meant to be a sort of solo arc kind of? like how pokemon had the spin off movies that weren’t like lore accurate. the main crew were to go to the city state of Las Nevadas and do a whole nuclear casino heist thing inspired by oceans 11 and casino 1995. WOW ya that got abandoned sadly 😔

that’s all i can rmm rn! mainly that it used to be way more lighthearted and episodic (think Adventure Time), just kids messing around with atompunk superscience, villainy and going on adventures together…i’m attempting to go through old notes but there’s not much substance to be found unfortunately- a lot of it is just dialogue…? like my mind straight up refused proper notes and things i think, all i have is old cringey dialogue between characters from 3 years ago now 😭😭😭

Yea, no. Just watched episode 26 and up until this episode I actually liked Winry and Edwin in fma03. Winry actually had me ripping my hair out in this episode. So, Ed uses alchemy to win a contest and earns money that she immediately claims and says its for her. Cool I guess. Then she beats the fuck out of him with a wrench, and calls him a jerk for winning with alchemy instead of losing with her automail. Friendly reminder the fight had jack shit to do with her, Ed went because the guy called him a shrimp.

THE GUY HE WAS ARM WRESTLING WITH HAD THIS HUGE ASS WEAPON AUTOMAIL, ED WAS NOT GOING TO WIN WITH HER AUTOMAIL ALONE.

And then to make matters worse, she just walks off for the entire night like the Barry situation wasn't gonna be in Ed's brain. Then she just lets Paninya steal his watch???? HIS STATE ALCHEMIST WATCH??? How is she gonna choose this random girl she just met over her best friend of like 15 years.

So after she basically acts like a terrible bitch the entire episode...she gets to break down and cry over some automail????? and Ed sits and validates her bs???? Mind you nothing even happened to his automail in this episode. And the fact that he wouldnt have won is really only because his arm was meant to act as a prosthetic, not a weapon. A regular prosthetic vs a weapon automail is not a fair fight.

Winry is just extremely extremely annoying in this episode. Hopefully she gets better as the series goes on but this episode really dissapointed me because I actually love Winry as a standalone character.

This one is unrelated but I kind of like that in 03 Al wasn't on board with bringing their mom back to life. In brotherhood Al was always saying "it was my decision too" but in 03 I feel like it really makes things harder on Ed because he had to keep convincing Al every step of the way that bringing their mom back was a good thing. Then after Al lost his body it truly was Ed's fault because Al didn't even want to do it in the first place. NOT HATING ON ED OF COURSE BECAUSE HE WAS LIKE 10 YEARS OLD AND DIDNT KNOW ANY BETTER, but I've always been a sucker for darker themes and Ed having to shoulder all the guilt for everything is just another way that 03 differs from brotherhood. It's subtle differences like these that make 03 great. Brotherhood was great too but 03 just has a way of tugging on the heart strings.

Oof, yeah. Winry's reactions are def over-the-top in that episode. Altho, tbh, I don't really take comedic violence in anime seriously. It's such a common trope that even if I don't personally find it funny, ik it's not meant to be serious. In the same vein, you could argue Ed hits Ling a lot too, you know? Or that he does nothing but curse at him. It's not meant to be literal, I think.

But yeah I do agree that her siding with Paninya was... weird. And like fr that was literally his state alchemist watch?? His ID??? It's kind of an overreaction to take something not personal so personally. But that's all coming from a place of being jaded to anime bs too, sigh. I do agree that edwin is better in 03 tho!!! I liked that it was more subtle, open to interpretation, if you will, so if you WANT you can still see them as platonic. I love vague relationships.

mmmm depends on your definition i think. if you include canon compliant events its def one of my danganronpa fics (a foreign still or light of the moon) but that feels boring to me SO i might say my most recent fic for kamen rider ex-aid (or just mine tonight) since it ends on kindof a sour note for the characters? im not sure tbh, as much as i love angst in a fic i tend to like happier or ambiguous endings.

that's an easy one! my dimension 20: mentopolis fic (whale fall) was written before the finale and was my guess as to what would happen w one of the pairs of characters, and its very sweet and wholesome i think :3

Maxi???? What a basic choice (jks) my faves were mouse, matt dee and bisho lmao . I feel like leckie or sledge would get stuck in the tower for sure and everyone would just be howling. it's not rly about favourites in that instance tho, tbh, it's more about the sheer amount of episodes he's in and how much i've watched lately, like i've watched so much that both him and harries in a dress have appeared in my dreams lmao.. but that aside, i do like maxi a lot actually.. the firefighter thing definitely helps lol, like maybe it's basic but how am i gonna say no to stanning a firefighter-lifeguard hybrid.. like c'mon i'm gay, it's gonna work on me! i also think his work educating families about water safety is really nice too.

i don't think i have an official list of faves, i'd need to think about it more, but mouse is definitely one of my favourites too! top 3 for sure! the episode with him and matt dee having opposite extremes of good/bad luck was so funny! and i always love it when he appears in an episode. i really like gonzo, deano, chappo, and bagus too... bagus always makes me laugh, like you think he's gonna be all laddish but then he's actually not?? like he's funny and jokes around but then he has little moments where he's very open and i don't wanna say vulnerable bc that's a bit too deep for what i'm actually talking about lol, but like he doesn't try to act all like he knows everything or like he's a bigshot or whatever. idk. it's just refreshing? he reminds me of someone i know irl as well, so i feel like that probably helps. mario was so adorable too, he was definitely one of my faves. and i would say that i like harrison quite a bit too.. like he's gone from the sweet somewhat naive newbie to a pretty funny dude, so yeah, i do like him too. deano has such big dad energy, but like a dad who plays practical jokes on his kids, but who is also really wholesome. i really liked him in the bali episodes. there are a few others who i like too, but who haven't been in it as much, or i haven't seen the eps that they're in more of, so i don't feel like i know them well enough to call them my favourites yet.

Can I request you do an analysis of the last scene in season 2 episode 6? Where Anne is panicking because she thinks Ann is going to leave her for a man - as has happened in the past - And Ann reassures her that she’s not going anywhere with a gentle caress.

such a sincere moment and the scene makes me want to celebrate how far we have come as a society now that lesbians can have kids together (not that it’s very accessible for everyone), and legally get married (in most countries, we def have a long way to go still). On top of being such a beautiful moment between Anne and Ann!, they deserve endless amounts of kudos for the part they played in blazing a trail for lesbians today. I really loved this episode.

Anyway, I’d love to hear your breakdown/thoughts on the scene if you have a moment! Def the best GJ blog out there!

Okay, let's do it, let’s break it down!!!

First off I wanna start saying that that scene is long 6 minutes and 15 seconds and I want us all to appreciate this because, really, scenes this long are a real treat. They are so well thought out and they always end up being my favourite. For reference, the hilltop scene is 5 minutes and 45 seconds and the scene where the Ann(e)s argue at the end of 1x04 – one of my absolute loves – is 7 minutes and 38 seconds long. But, enough with data!

A couple of random things before going into it in more details:

I love LOVE the domesticity we see in this scene with Anne pouring tea to Ann, offering her some biscuits and the way in which Ann declines the offer just with a wave of the hand.

We can also subtly pick up how different Anne and Ann are in the way they administer the household, with Ann calling Hemingway by her first name – Thank you, Rachel – opposed to Anne who calls all the servants by their last name – Thank you, Hemingway – I love how this kind of details are woven through the dialogue and how, with just a couple of words or gestures, we’re able to pick up different dynamics between the characters. And of course small things like this, when they’re done right (like in this case), bring the characterization to a whole new level.

This is gonna be long so get yourself a cup of tea or coffee and let’s go!

As soon as AL sits down it’s clear that there is some tension between the Ann(e)s. Ann���s all fake smiles and from the way she looks at Anne, from the way she swallows before talking we can see that she’s thinking about a way to bring up what is going round and round in her head. Anne picks it up too – something is not right.

After a while AW says that she’s been thinking about the division of the estate, the problems with her sister and that she’s not sure what it is all for if in the end everything will go to the Sutherlands anyway...

– And without children, I’m not sure what it is all for. – This is where Anne starts being terrified. As soon as AW says this, AL is thinking what she will only say during the second half of the scene: We do things for us! – But here she keeps her thoughts and fears for herself. She wants to understand what Ann Walker really means. We’ve already seen in season one that it takes time for Ann Walker to really explain herself, Anne knows this and so, little by little she tries to understand more and more. Is Ann saying she wants children? AW not being sure what it is all for could mean that she doesn’t think that doing things just for the two of them is enough?

Anne is nervous, she puts down her cup of tea, she adjusts herself on the chair, she smooths her waistcoat... she pretends she’s calm.

– And is it not God’s purpose that we...people have children? – Is it tho?

We’ve heard Anne say before how being how she is is all natural, is God given, so can it really be God’s purpose for them, for her, to have children? When having children means being with a man? – It would be absurd, it would be perverse – No. Anne doesn’t think that that’s everyone's purpose. But what does Ann think?

– I suppose I’d always imagined that, one day, I would have children of my own, that’s all. – It breaks my heart how AW says this line. You can hear her voice almost breaking. She’s scared, just as much as AL is. She’s scared about saying this out loud, she knows Anne could take it wrong. And AL tries to understand and tries to bring everything to a rational, logical level. She doesn’t lose her temper here, even tho we can already see how scared she is to have this conversation. How could Ann want children when she feels a sort of repugnance to forming any sort of connection with a man? It doesn’t make sense, does it?

And here comes the conflict.

The way they think about things is very very different. Ann Walker imagines things without really thinking about the real, practical aspect of it all while Anne Lister’s goal is to make things happen. I love how this scene shows us how different the Ann(e)s are in the way they think about their future. On one hand we have Anne who is very pragmatic. She’s realistic and logical, she is able rationalise what things mean – You mean, you’d imagined children, but not marriage to a man? – For her this doesn’t make any sense. She doesn’t entertain impossible thoughts. Even in the way she says to Ann later on in the scene that being with her is a great sacrifice, she says – practically – what being with her means, it means they will never have children, it means they will never have a marriage certificate, it means they have to face public scrutiny, it means they have to make sacrifices. So they have to be certain of what they are doing, they have to evaluate everything.

On the other hand we have Ann Walker who’s the opposite. When she says that she wants to be with Anne more than anything in the whole world that is a very romantic thought but not a pragmatic one. She wants to be with her, but what does it really mean to be with Anne Lister? She’s driven by her love for Anne and that is really the only thing that matters to her. She says that but at the same time she talks about children without fully realising that the two things are not reconcilable. She can’t want both of those things, it’s impossible – and what if, one day, her desire of having children ends up being greater than her desire of being with Anne? This is what Anne Lister is thinking, and this is one of the things that terrifies her.

And here, here you can really see the terror in Anne’s eyes become greater and greater. She struggles to keep it together. The way she closes her eyes when she says – It does signify – is heartbreaking and it reminds me of the – What? – she shouts at the end of episode 4 in season 1. She immediately thinks about her conversation with Marian and, like with Marian, she can’t come up with a counter argument to what Ann Walker just told her. If she wants to be a mother, well then, what can Anne do? What can Anne say?

But Ann Walker wants her to fight for them, for her. She doesn’t like that Anne says that she won’t be an obstacle for something she has very much at heart. – Don’t say that – This season Ann has been feeling invisible, ignored, she’s seen her wife do 100 different things and she feels put aside at times. She also knows something happened with Mariana and she’s finding out all these new things about Anne – so, I believe, she wants to see Anne care for her, she doesn’t want to see her give up so easily.

But Anne doesn’t even hear that – she can’t keep it in anymore, she’s upset and she’s about to explode. I love the quote of the meteor and I love how she stands up from that table.

I love how she can’t keep still – she was so composed before but now her anger, sadness, fear are too great and they take over completely. She is so terrified that she’s actually shaking.

– Things like this, all my life. I pretend it gets easier, but it doesn’t. – What a confession this is. Anne who always rises above it all, who’s strong, who can’t be touched by the things people say about her, is admitting here that it all gets to her. With time she’s just become good enough at pretending it doesn’t affect her but in reality it does. And it’s beautiful how she lets Ann Walker see this very vulnerable aspect of herself. Now she is not alone anymore, now she has someone to share her fears and insecurities with. Now she has Ann.

The way AW says “Anne” right after breaks me – she is so calm, her voice is so steady – in her mind she hasn’t thought one second about breaking it off with Anne and you can hear it in the way she says her name.

And finally, Anne says what she’s been thinking from the start – We do things for us! That’s who it’s for. So that we can have a life together. We matter.

And, again, look how different her body language is here opposed to the beginning of the scene where she was trying to keep calm and they were sitting at the table. Her body shakes, she moves her hands around, she has a heavy weight on her chest and you can feel it by the way she breathes. She’s so fucking terrified.

Oh and here comes the line that personally speaks to me the most – Having children isn’t the only reason to strive and do well and better oneself and be happy – This right here. It’s amazing that today we have so many opportunities and something like this (having a child if you’re in a same sex relationship) isn’t impossible anymore but personally I feel that more than that the message I’m taking away from this scene is this: my relationship doesn’t need a child to have meaning or be considered “complete”.

Anne doesn’t want children, doesn’t care about children, doesn’t think about how having children would be, her life is full even without having children. She loves her life the way it is. She understands the desire someone else might have of being a mother, yes, but that’s not something she personally dreams for herself. And I just love this on a very personal level.

Even the way in which she speaks about it to Ann Walker –  [A child] It’s something that I can never give you – the focus is not on her, it’s on Ann. She’s upset and sad not because she can’t be a mother, she’s upset because in that moment she’s realising that Ann might want something she won’t be able to give her. And here’s another thing that terrifies her: not being enough for Ann.

Another thing that I love about this whole scene and about Suranne’s performance is the pauses she makes to breathe and the way in which you can really see Anne struggling to not break down even more and cry. It really makes you feel how scared and terrified Anne is during the whole exchange. I particularly love the pause she does before saying – I need to know about that now – I love how that line is delivered because you can really feel how scared Anne is to know the answer to that request. What if Ann Walker says to her that, yes, she might want children in the future? What happens then? Where do they go from there?

What the Ann(e)s have, what they really have, is the promise they made each other, in private, in secret, something only the two of them know about. That’s all they’ve got. They don’t have a marriage certificate – We can never have a piece of paper that says we have any kind of legal union – they don’t have a child to bind them. They literally only have each other and the promise they made. There is nothing “from the outside” that binds them together, no security, nothing. Imagine the trust they have to have in each other to be sure that, one day, the other one won’t just walk away.

– You’re frightening me. – I’m frightening you? – This literally broke me. Here, right here is when Anne admits to be frightened, terrified.

Ann Walker says “You’re frightening me.” and with that reversed question Anne is basically saying “Oh, you are frightened, well you have no idea how much you are frightening me. You have no idea how terrified I am that all this you’re saying could mean that you’ll leave me one day.”

– You have to be certain. That this, here, with me, is what you want. – Here is another bit that I absolutely adore for the same reason of the “I need to know about that now”. The way in which Anne says this, the pauses she makes, good lord, she is scared of finishing the sentence, she’s scared to hear what Ann Walker will say after.

And this all parallels to the hilltop scene, AL asking AW if she’s ready to take the sacrament with her, etc. etc. – and like then, Ann Walker is ready to reassure Anne Lister that this is absolutely what she wants, no doubts about it.

– I want to be with you more than anything in the whole world. You know that! – There is no hesitation in her answer. None. What I find interesting tho are the words AW chooses. She just wants to be with Anne Lister, whatever that entails. She doesn’t answer something like “Yes I understand and this is what I want”, she literally says that the only thing she wants is being with Anne, fuck the rest. AW doesn’t stop to think of what that could mean, of what sacrifices she'll have to make, she doesn’t stop to think about all the possibilities, she just knows that she loves AL and that she wants to be with her. That’s all.

And here we see the way in which Ann Walker shows affection and love. The caring touches I’ve already talked about, that were so clear in episode 1. Ann comes closer. She wants to both reassure Anne and smooth things over by getting close to her wife and comforting her physically and not only with words.

But Anne is too scared and she’s still pretending to be stoic. She’s also protecting herself from disappointment. We’ve already seen her have this attitude, on the hilltop scene when Ann walks closer to her and she instinctively takes a couple of steps back.

I love how here we see the same thing happening but it’s clear that their dynamic has changed. Ann’s bolder and goes straight for Anne’s hand – and Anne is not so gentle, she’s not scared to hurt Ann with her rejection. They are comfortable with each other and it’s clear they know each other in a more profound way.

Ann knows Anne too well, she knows what she needs and so she gives her space, at first...and when she comes closer again it is to show Anne that she is ready to make all the sacrifices in the world for her.

I love how Ann takes a moment to think about what to do, to think about what is the best way to reassure her wife. It’s almost as if Ann has learned from Anne what to do in these kind of moments. AW comforts AL in the same way in which AL comforts her – getting closer, kissing her hand, caressing her cheek, being physically close, words are not enough sometimes, and AW is not really good with words anyway.

There’s a little bit of a power struggle at the beginning – AW wants to mend AL’s wounds but AL doesn’t want to let her at first. But AW knows what Anne really needs and doesn’t let go, it’s as if she’s saying to Anne: “Don’t worry, you can be vulnerable with me, I won’t hurt you, trust me”. She takes Anne’s hand and I LOVE how we can see surprise on Anne’s face here.

And those hand kisses y’all!!!! Good God hELP – I’m perfectly articulated and focused discussing anything else but my GOD the hand kisses literally make me break down and cry and lose all ability to properly express my thoughts.

And this is all I’m gonna say about the hand kiss here...

...the last time Ann kissed Anne’s hand was when they were exchanging rings and here HERE, DOING THIS, ANN is bASICALLY renewing the promise she made – and the hand she kisses is the hand with the wedding ring!!!!! SHE’S KISSING THE RING!!!!!

Can we let this sink in??? Like, without saying anything Ann is saying so fucking much! She’s saying “I married you, I am your wife, and I want to spend the rest of my life with you, whatever happens.” Can you hear me cry? Ann Walker owns my life!!

And then Ann puts Anne’s hand on her cheek, to feel her close, and she closes her eyes while kissing her palm and yall I CANT. And the way it all parallels to the chaumiere scene and to the hilltop scene like – I’m speechless!!

And when, finally, Ann Walker caresses Anne’s cheek, Anne can’t pretend anymore (and again beautiful parallel with the hilltop scene).

I mean, what we learned from all this is that when Anne’s not strong enough, Ann Walker will be strong enough for the both of them – You are stronger than you think. –

this show is a masterpiece
