The Music Key Thief
Since we're nearing the 18th anniversary of the beloved classic Dance Dance Revolution: Mario Mix, here is a commemorative piece featuring the only time Waluigi was truly the antagonist in a Mario game.

They still haven't let go of Super Mario Land 2 and Wario's Woods.
Then again, knowing Wario, neither has he.

this year at TMG I picked up a copy of DDR Mario Mix (literally a game I've wanted to play since I was a kid) and after looking at the charts I can say I'm more than capable of doing the thing but not reading the thing because it's not looking like there's a scroll speed option :(((( . Ah well, fuck it we ball. Can't wait to try it out once I've got my gamecube set back up!!

I really love the idea that Waluigi is just a normal dude who plays sports with Wario in his free time. However, we have a bit of evidence against that. In DDR Mario Mix, he actually joins a seemingly pretty epic adventure. He stole one of the music gems, powerful artefacts that are said hold all the world’s music. He apparently did this to become the world’s greatest dancer.
So, hear me out. Waluigi is just chilling at his place, trying to nail his dance moves for his niece’s birthday party, but he just can’t get them right. So of course, he calls up the weirdest dude he knows (affectionate) Wario. “Yo you wanna be good at a dancin’ huh?” Wario says. “I think I have an idea, but you gotta do me a favour.” “Look, I’ve been trying to get a these music a gems for a long time to sell on the black market, they apparently hold all the music in the world and can make the most tone deaf person a master of music and dance.” He said. “If we pull this heist off, I’ll give them all to you. Once you’re done using them, give ‘em back to me.” Waluigi was intrigued, “I’ve never done crime before, but if it’sa for my niece I suppose it’s not too bad…”. “COME ON MAN!” Wario says. “Magic artefacts like this don’t even have real owners. It ain’t a crime. Now come on, let’s get these things. It’s Wario and Waluigi time!” The heist doesn’t go well, with them losing two of the gems in a complex chain of events involving a huge blooper. They still got 2 of them though, which is still great! Unfortunately, they got separated. Now, with only one gem each, they planned to meet up to settle their deal in time. Unfortunately a pesky plumber threw a wrench in their plans. After a long set of trials in the mansion full of traps he somehow landed in, Waluigi Challenges Mario to a dance off. Surely with even one music gem he could beat this guy right? If Wario was legit, this would definitely be enough for beating someone inexperienced in dance right? As he challenged Mario to a dance off, Mario’s expression changed. It’s hard to pin down what it was, but the best way Waluigi could describe it was that what was behind those blue eyes had vanished. The second the music started playing, he instantly began dancing. It was amazing, and almost unnatural. At times it even looked like he didn’t have any bones. At this moment, Waluigi realised that this was not his world. He was not cut out for this kind of thing. In a combination of honest understanding that Mario was better and fear, Waluigi conceded and gave Mario the Music gem.

“I’m going to use the Music Key for my newest attraction! It’s called “DDR: Wario Mix.” It’s an exploration of greed, stench, and stubby legs through interpretive dance.”
