ok. question.
ortega ended up hallucinating sidestep after they "died", but sidestep doesnt know about that. they know it got bad, but never the full extent of how their death affected them. so if your sidestep Did learn, if they found out ortega looked for them in every little piece they could, would that change anything for your sidesteps? would their relationship with ortega be any different?
#pulp speaks#Am i thinking of my “ortega sees sidestep posthb” fic again? perhaps#shameless plug btw yall should read it its called 'seen' on ao3 and i still like it#but anyway the important bits: ive been thinking about it with my sidesteps and its really interesting to me how different they are#but theyre all some variation of “i didnt know you /cared/”#caine is. uncomfortable with the idea#i genuinely dont know why but i do know that in the end their feelings on the matter are “whats done is done and im back now” with a small#“ill try not to leave again” mixed in#meanwhile cyrus is a deer in headlights over it#itd be way worse if he learned it when they met again- i feel like if he learned ortega was still that attached he wouldve left and never-#-come back. he would still want to Now but hes too tangled in his relationships and ortega is his /friend/ and leaving would just explode i#-his face‚ god Damnit ortega you son of a bitch‚ he shouldve just run. you werent supposed to drag him into caring about people again.#cecilia would have mixed feelings about it. i think shed resonate with it a lot for reasons she doesnt want to face#but it would also hit her like a goddamn Truck that he chose to move on/replace her rather than try get her back and its easier to get mad-#-about that than question her own feelings. but also maybe she could use this to her advantage? maybe this time he knows theres always a-#-chance hell come back for her next time. maybe. shes hoping there wont be a next time.#cynthias an interesting case because shes in love with ortega. deeply. but ortega /never came for her/ when she /promised/ and cynthia-#-is still furious about it#ortega hallucinated her in death but she couldnt put the pieces together and go looking herself? she cared enough to look for her but-#-not enough to save her?#she would still end up settling on bitterness for abandoning her but the information would shake her to her core#anyway. i think ortega should be used as a squeaky toy 👍#caine lynzal#cyrus becker#cecilia rider#cynthia garcia#ortega#sidestep#fhr

👀 mindscapes u say ?
the minute i saw this ask this popped into my brain
Tumblr media
insanity will go under the cut :)
step being step, and them being telepaths, i always thought they had ways to protect their mindscape just in case something happened, so those are going to be added along with the actual descriptions of the mindscape! ill add a bit of what their thoughts sound/feel like because it goes hand in hand for me
Caine- their mindscape is a mix of both the farm and the rangers HQ, because those two were the most fomative places in caine learning what to do and how to be. for a long time they werent anything but a vessel for what others wanted. his mindscape will shift depending on what caine associates the person with the most(fun fact, ortega is more or less at the midway point between the farm and the rangers. it makes for,,, an interesting look to his mindscape). the only thing that doesnt change, though, is that it always feels strangely impersonal, like hes viewing his own mind in a third person perspective. their mind is firm yet adaptable, and while his shields arent,,,,the greatest, they dont need to be. he keeps track of the mental feel of anybody in their brain, and arranges something accordingly. whatever seems to be a particular persons weakpoint, hell pick up on and project. its difficult to find anything in their brain (that sounds like an insult but i Swear its not) since its bare of more personal objects or revealing factors. they use their observations and skill to make sure nobody can do much to their brain– just like a fight, find his opponents weakness and take advantage of it to win.
i always saw his thoughts as a mix of ortega and chens, most of them being short and clipped, but restless. hell often get lost in them, though hes always aware of whats going on around him. their imagination is surprisingly active, and they also come with a healthy dose of overthinking :D
Cyrus- i was mentally shaking your hand when you talked about cyrus mindscape. the core of his mind is exactly what you described; its a blaze, with near welding-torch focus towards its victims. youll be burned if you try to get close. but hes making sure nobody reaches that far. the surrounding area is a icy and cold, giving anybody inside absolutely nothing. hes laid tricks, of course: fading tracks in the snow, an odd rustle of bushes here or there, but mostly speaking its entirely barren. its a test of endurance, and hes depending on people failing from the environment before they can do any real damage. only the people who know him or are observant enough can figure out which way to go. as a little bonus tidbit: prehb cyrus' mindscape was a forest in midday, where the heat was just intense enough to feel it beating on your back. there are still remnants of that in his current mindscape, though the trees are fallen over and theres no sun to be found.
his thoughts are very final, for lack of better word. theres hardly room for doubt in them, though often times he'll ruminate on an idea to make sure everything is up to his satisfaction. despite the outer shell of his mindscape, his thoughts Do feel warm, but its more like friction burn
Cecilia- her mind is surprisingly open, and it is showy. its a museum, and when you enter theres a velvet carpet with those massive marble stairs in the middle and a beautiful chandelier overhead. every floor has paintings of things shes done, with the first few floors consisting entirely of her proudest moments, including the sidestep ones. im sure theres at least one painting of the nanosurge in there, she didnt like the fact that nobody knew she stopped it. there are some more quieter, but still happy memories when people go up, ones with ortega, argent, herald, and more. theres an uneasy feeling at about this point, though. the farther up they go, the stronger that feeling grows, to the point where the mental pressure could crush them completely. ceci doesnt need tricks like the other two do; she exercises power as her means of defense. its coupled with more disturbing paintings too, ones that depict things like the farm and the void. the lights get dimmer, theres less exhibits, and the final floor is just. empty. empty, and utterly lonely. what are you doing up here? theres nothing for you.
shes in the same boat as ortega, aka her thoughts Never shut up. shes creative and excitable, and its easy to get wrapped up in her thought processes. there doesnt tend to be repetition or circling, she doesnt stay on the same thought for very long.
Cynthia- you know the "you... are... lost in memories" line in rebirth? thats what cynthias mindscape is like. its a house thats an amalgamation of every home shes visited before: tia elenas, anathemas, and of course ortegas. it invites nostalgia. every object sends a person into memories, using the same system that nightmare loops do, but kinder. the memories are wrong, though. faces can get blurred, voices are distorted, and touch is especially difficult to get right. it can be disorienting to experience these loops, and they become nauseating if you spend too long in them. the house itself is a maze, and it feels like it goes on forever. none of the rooms repeat itself, but they cant be used as a marker either, because it never seems like you can go back to the same room you were in before. thats how cynthia protects herself– nothing is the same, everything is a trap, and when a person falls for it, she can safely extract them from her mind.
her thoughts are long, slow, and careful, and she often goes back to earlier thoughts to consider them further. her thoughts are twitchy too, theyre easily affected by her environment. theyre warm though, and i imagine feels like somebody reading a story to you

#GOT SO EXCITED WHEN I SAW THIS#WAS HAVING QN ALL AROUND BAD DAY SO SEEING THIS MADE ME PERK UP#THANK YOU FOR ASKING THIS#i went to go look through my stuff immediately#i have a lot more on cyrus since he tends to play well (in a (good) bad way) with other steps#so i just talk about him more on principle#i also Love hearing about how people enjoy cecilia#actually before i dive into a rant#pulp speaks#caine lynzal#cyrus becker#cecilia rider#cynthia garcia#anyway i love hearing peoples thoughts on cecilia its so much fun#and in general its always interesting to me the different ways that people interact with each of my steps#like im trying to approach this analysis as neutrally as possible here lmfao but the way i see it it tends to be a reflection of how i treat#-my steps#caine seems to be the staple of my account (which makes sense ive been insane about him from the very start)#but i think people have more of an idea of how they Think rather than how they Act because thats the most interesting part of caine to me#idk if people know that he outwardly he literally has the same demeanour as chen but the no thoughts head empty version of him lmfaooooo#cyrus on the other hand#hes basically the golden child for Several reasons#hes the one whos the most fun to make interact with other steps because hes very fitting to the sidestep mold wo being like. idk. too-#-annoying about it? does that make sense? idk i just know hes a lot better with other steps so people naturally know more abt him by virtue-#-of me doing the equivalent of pushing him to talk at daycare#cecilia is just! so much fun! like ive talked about it before but its So fun to see how shes got people wrapped around her finger (for lack-#-of better word) because bitch Me Too. shes so charming and can act so sweet to the point it can distract from the fact that actually yeah#she can be kind of an asshole if she wants to be. i talk about her less too so she pretty much just steals the show and disappears w nobody-#-the wiser#and people just dont know as much abt cynthia because i dont post as much about her

Gavin Roberts, Ohio inmate A804386, born 2005, incarceration intake November 2023 at age 18, scheduled for release November 2047
Murder, Robbery
In November 2023, nearly a year after the shooting death of Brice Hilton, family and loved ones wore pink shirts bearing the Pennsylvania man’s smiling face to court to learn the fate of his murderer.
From the courtroom gallery, they watched as Gavin Roberts was sentenced to serve between 42 and 47 1/2 years to life in prison for Hilton’s Nov. 19, 2022, murder.
On that day, Hilton, 37, and his then-pregnant fiancee, Blair Legg, had driven to Ohio to purchase a cellphone from Roberts for Hilton’s son’s birthday.
Instead, Roberts, armed with a .38 Special revolver and a potato inside an iPhone box, shot Hilton multiple times before robbing his lifeless body of $220.
Before sentencing was handed down by Trumbull County Common Pleas Judge Cynthia W. Rice, Legg and Hilton’s mother, LaSonia Moorer-Henry gave victim impact statements.
Roberts looked at the floor throughout both speeches, standing just feet from them.
Roberts was convicted of murder after a Trumbull County jury deliberated only two hours following a one-and-a-half-day trial, finding Roberts guilty of aggravated murder and aggravated robbery, both with firearms specifications.
He was found not guilty of an additional murder count that carried a precalculated and design factor, and not guilty of aggravated burglary.
Assistant Prosecutor Christopher Becker said because Roberts was only 17 at the time of his crime, he would be eligible for parole after serving 25 years because of Ohio legislation set in 2021 that restricts sentencing for teen offenders.
“I think it’s very unfair. This is a classic type of case of why Senate Bill 256 should be reversed by the legislature, and they should take that off the books because it’s the classic case of someone who deserves more than getting a parole hearing at 25 years,” Becker said.

In combination with the Becker poll I decided why not ask more related questions - for science!
Edit: note that I do not count for example a fem or nb sidestep with the name Cyrus as a default name sidestep in this case. I specifically mean the right default name/gender combo that is given to you :D

Note
Can I ask 3 and 22 from the Sidestep ask game for your Steps? 👀
sure thing!
3. What is their villain name? Why did they choose it?
Caine- their name is Lycan! in all honesty he wouldnt bother picking his own name, BUT i need to continue his dog motif so theyre getting a unique one as a treat
Cyrus- hhhhh ok. see i can see cyrus taking up two different names– either puppeteer or heartbreak. im sticking with puppeteer for now but ill explain for both. on one hand, puppeteer really is the best way to describe his viewpoint at this point in time. hes the one pulling the strings here, and everybody else will play along. theyre nothing more than tools, puppets, putting on a show for his own amusement, and the fact hes known as a telepath really helps. on the other hand, i can see him using heartbreak as a way to kill sidestep all over again: the more the name heartbreak is used, the more the memory of sidestep dies. plus he sees himself as heartbreak 2.0– he uses the lessons he learned and channels it to the new an improved version, one who will finish what they started
Cecilia- Lupin! one, because the name was pretty, and two, because arsene lupin was the greatest fictional thief of all time, and she's confident she can live up to the name. shes just cocky like that LMFAO
Cynthia- at first i was certain that shed leave her name up to the press, but i think shed be a bit more hands on with how she comes across to the press, if only to further her goals. that said, she ended up deciding on the name Echo. she sees herself as a shadow of her former self, but with just enough intact to deliver a message, one that the people need to hear before its too late (love me my justice steps)
22. How do they feel about their telepathy? Is it a gift? A curse?
Caine- listen to me ok. listen to me. caine cannot introspect to save their fucking life. the only way hes learned how to place his own emotions is by using his telepathy to compare others emotions with his own. it helps them get through conversations with their head afloat, quickens decision making during fights, and most importantly, keeps them under the radar. he doesnt know what hed do without it. and even though hes the most prone to sensory overload, he wouldnt want to live without telepathy. hark is always there whenever they need some peace and quiet anyway.
Cyrus- he sees his telepathy as a weapon. one that gives him an upper hand in situations where fists wont help, so he can turn it more to his favour. but its a double edged sword, and sometimes it can be a hindrance more than a help. it made it harder to remain emotionally detached, especially from a certain someone whose thoughts never shut up. still, telepathy is a useful tool in his arsenal, one that he intends to use to the fullest
Cecilia- her telepathy is as much a part of her as a limb. yeah, she uses it a lot less than other steps, but its still something uniquely hers, and she cant imagine living without. or she can, but oh boy does she not like the image. she doesnt experience sensory overload much, so she tends to take comfort in crowds and noisy places, where she can pick apart the thoughts and emotions of the people around her, a bit like people watching, if you dont watch the people lmfao
Cynthia- ive said it before, but she has mixed feelings on her telepathy. shes grateful for it when used to feel other peoples emotions, because it grounds her in a way most other things cant. she also cant help but use it to make sure shes doing things right. but it still makes her feel guilty in a way she cant shake, like shes invading others privacy even when she cant help it. its part of the reason shes drawn to ortega– she doesnt have to worry about her telepathy causing unnecessary snooping into their thoughts

Predictions
Putting these out there to be accountable when we find out the Oscar winner. Below the cut.
Here's the list of nominees. Movies I expect to win are in bold, but movies I wish would win are in italics. I'm leaving out the categories where I don't have enough knowledge for (either haven't seen enough of the movies, or don't know the field enough to judge.)
Caveat: I have not seen A Complete Unknown (though politically, I think it will sweep), Emilia Perez (never), I'm Still Here, Nickel Boys, or Wicked (though I intend to see all of them before the awards, EXCEPT Emilia Perez.) So that may bias my picks, and if I come back and tell you Nickel Boys is the most revolutionary cinematography of the 21st century, don't be entirely suprised.

See the full list of Oscar nominations for 2025 Academy Awards
By Eric Henderson
Updated on: January 23, 2025 / 1:20 PM EST / CBS News
Nominations for the 97th annual Academy Awards were announced Thursday morning, with "Emilia Pérez," "A Complete Unknown" and "Conclave" at the top of the heap in overall nods. This comes after the nominations were delayed twice due to the Los Angeles area wildfires.
Leading the pack in overall nominations, with 13 total, is "Emilia Pérez," a crime musical centering around a cartel leader who has transitioned. That achievement is just one nomination shy of tying the record for overall nominations from a single film; "Titanic," "All About Eve" and "La La Land" all received 14.
Actress Karla Sofía Gascón, playing the titular role, made Oscar history by being the first transgender woman to be nominated in any acting category. She joins a competitive field that also includes Cynthia Erivo, from "Wicked," and Demi Moore, whose performance in the bloody body horror hit "The Substance" has stirred up a conversation on the industry's mistreatment of women of an age. Both Moore and the film itself were expected to get nominations in the top Oscar categories.
Behind "Emilia Pérez" in overall nominations were "The Brutalist" and "Wicked," which each received 10 nominations. All three, along with "The Substance," were among the 10 nominated for the best picture award, where they were joined by "A Complete Unknown," "Conclave," "Anora," "Dune: Part Two," "Nickel Boys" and "I'm Still Here."
"Emilia Pérez" won four Golden Globes earlier this month, including best motion picture musical or comedy, and best supporting actress for Zoe Saldaña's performance. "The Brutalist," a 215-minute epic about a Holocaust survivor who emigrates to America post-WWII, won Golden Globes for best motion picture drama, and lead actor Adrian Brody was also a Globe winner. Both Saldaña and Brody were nominated in their respective Oscar categores.
Actors Bowen Yang and Rachel Sennott hosted the live announcement.
