On January 15th 1973, Neil M Gunn, author of The Silver Darlings and many other books and short stories, died.
Gunn was born in the Caithness village of Dunbeath on November 8th 1891, his father was the captain of a herring boat, and Gunn's fascination with the sea and the courage of fishermen can be traced directly back to his childhood memories of his father's work. His mother would also provide Gunn with a crucial model for the types of steadfast, earthy, and tradition-bearing women that would populate many of his works.
He came from a big family with eight siblings, and when his primary schooling was completed in 1904, he moved south to live with his older sister Mary and her husband Dr. Keiller, the local GP at Kenbank in St John's Town of Dalry, Kirkcudbrightshire. He continued his education there with tutors including the local schoolmaster, and the writer and poet J.G.Carter "Theodore Mayne".
Gunn’s adult life began with him working in the Civil Service in London and Edinburgh before returning to the live and work in the Highlands, his first novel, The Grey Coast, was published in 1926, but it wasn’t until 1937 and the success of Highland River, which won the James Tait Black Memorial Prize, that he was able to give up his job with Customs and Excise to write full-time.
Highland River marked the end of a trilogy of novels exploring the history of the Highlands, following Sun Circle and Butcher’s Broom. The following year Gunn sold his house in Inverness and bought a twenty-seven foot motor boat, The Thistle, and took his wife and brother on a three-month sailing cruise around the islands of Scotland. His final book was the autobiography The Atom of Delight, published in 1956. He wrote a number of essays, which have been collected into anthologies.
Gunn died in 1973, and a memorial sculpture, seen in the pic called, Kenn and the Salmon, was unveiled at Dunbeath Harbour in 1991. Kenn is the central figure in Gunn’s novel ‘Highland River’, carrying home the huge salmon he caught with his bare hands in the Well Pool beside the Telford Bridge over the Dunbeath River.

Excise Duty:
Legal Framework: In most countries, excise duty is levied under the Central Excise Act. However, in India, since the introduction of the Goods and Services Tax (GST) in 2017, most excise duties were subsumed under GST. Excise duty still applies to certain goods, such as petroleum, alcohol, and tobacco.
Types of Excise Duty:
Basic Excise Duty: This is the standard excise duty imposed on all manufactured goods.
Special Excise Duty: Imposed in addition to basic excise duty on specific goods.

All such taxes were levied under GST system. Therefore, the government streamlined the tax structure, reduced the cascading effects of taxes and, in general, increased the efficiency and transparency in the tax system.
Types of GST in India
Central Goods and Services Tax (CGST)
Central goods and services tax is the charge of the central government for supply made intra-state within the country in regard to goods and services. In terms of intra-state supplies, both CGST and SGST are applicable, and revenues accrue only to the central government. The CGST rates in the entire country are uniform.

What is GST ?
The long awaited Goods and Services Tax has finally roll out on July 01 2017, ending a swerve of indirect taxes imposed by the Centre as well as respective States and Union Territories till now GST, the single tax rate for products and services will be applicable in any part of the country. The present 17 indirect taxes have been merged into one tax i.e. GST. The taxes that have been merged are — Central Excise duty, Duty of Excise (Medicinal and Toilet preparations), Additional Duties of Excise (Goods of Special Importance), Additional Duties of Excise (Textiles and Textile Products), Additional Duties of Customs (commonly known as CVD), Special Additional Duty of Customs (SAD), Service Tax, Cesses and surcharges insofar as they relate to supply of goods or services, State VAT, Central Sales Tax, Purchase Tax, Luxury Tax, Entry Tax (All forms), Entertainment Tax (except those levied by the local bodies), Taxes on advertisements, Taxes on lotteries, betting and gambling, State cesses and surcharges insofar as they relate to supply of goods or services.
The GST will have a big impact on the compliances for trade and industry sector. There will be seamless flow of credit across the value chain. Also there will be removal of cascading effect. The GST has been segregated as Central Goods and Service Tax (CGST), State Goods and Service Tax (SGST) and Integrated Goods and Service Tax (IGST). The prescribed GST rates shall be — 5%, 12%, 18% and 28%. The same has been defined as Destination based tax, the taxable event for GST is supply. It all depend where the supply of Goods or services has taken place and accordingly tax is being charged.
The government has also prescribed a threshold exemption limit — INR 20 lakhs & INR 10 lakhs��for special category States & North Eastern States. It’s a PAN based registration. The government has provided to deposit taxes by internet banking, NEFT/RTGS, debit card, credit card & over the counter (OTC). The main technology backbone of GST is Goods and Service Tax network (GSTN). It provides IT Infrastructure and services to the Central and State Governments, tax payers and other stakeholders for implementation of the Goods and Service Tax (GST).
