Signs You May Need a Joint Replacement:
Persistent Pain: If you experience pain that doesn’t subside with medication, rest, or physical therapy, it might be time to consider joint replacement. Persistent pain, especially in the knee or hip, is often a key indicator of joint degeneration.
Limited Mobility: Difficulty in performing simple tasks like walking, climbing stairs, or even standing up from a seated position may indicate that your joint has deteriorated significantly. If your mobility is severely restricted and daily activities become a challenge, joint replacement may be the best option.
Joint Stiffness: Stiffness in the joints, particularly after waking up or remaining seated for long periods, can signal advanced arthritis or joint wear and tear. Over time, this stiffness can worsen, further limiting your ability to move freely.
Non-Surgical Treatments Aren’t Working: If medications, injections, and physical therapy no longer provide relief, it’s a clear sign that your joint is severely damaged. At this point, surgery may offer the best chance at restoring your quality of life.
X-Ray Evidence: An X-ray or MRI can reveal the extent of the damage. At Speed Scan, our advanced imaging services allow us to accurately diagnose joint conditions, ensuring that you get the right treatment at the right time.
Why Choose Speed Scan for Your Joint Health?

Among The Stars Chapter 4
First Chapter Previous Chapter Next Chapter
Summary: Logan Watts is a famous scientist, known by almost everyone in the galaxy. His most famous invention is his friend and assistant, a healthcare android named Patton. When they are called to another planet for a meeting with the local ruler, they're expecting a completely normal trip. Little did they know, this trip would send them into a daring adventure to protect their galaxy and stop a war. Teamed up with unlikely friends, including a runaway gladiator and an infamous crime trio, Logan and Patton have to figure out how to make peace and save their universe (and beyond) from being destroyed.
Pairings: (Eventual) Logicality, Prinxiety, and Demus
Word count: 3,068
Author's Notes: The last three chapters were mostly introductory, but in this one things are finally starting to come together!
Logan stared at the sky, dumbfounded. His last chance of escape was gone. Patton was gone. He had to do something, to figure out how to get off of this planet. He speed walked out of the parking lot, not wanting to run so he didn't draw too much attention to himself. He walked up to the first person he saw, a woman with purple crystals around her eyes.
"Excuse me, does this planet have any type of public interplanetary transportation?" He asked.
The woman glanced at him and walked away. He figured that there wouldn't be any point in following her, because if she didn't answer the first time then she wouldn't answer if he asked a second time. He approached a second person, a man whose eye color shifted through different shades of pastels and had round glasses resting on his nose. He kind of reminded Logan of Patton.
"Hello, I apologise for the interruption, but is there any public transportation on this planet?" He asked.
"You're Logan Watts, right?" The man asked. Logan nodded. "I'm sorry, but we're not supposed to talk to you."
"What? Why?" Logan furrowed his brow.
"None of us know, if I'm being honest with you." The man shrugged. "The president broadcasted a city-wide announcement a few minutes ago, he told us not to talk to you."
Logan let out a cry of frustration, which caused the other man's eyes to widen. "Of course! Of course this is his fault."
"O...kay?" The stranger raised one eyebrow. That also made Logan think of Patton, because the android would always make fun of him for his inability to raise only one eyebrow. "I have to leave, I'm really not supposed to be talking to you right now."
The man took a few steps backwards before turning around and speed-walking away. Logan couldn't blame him. He looked around at the surrounding buildings. A library, a supermarket, the presidential building, the arena… a mechanic. He sprinted down the street towards the shop. He burst through the front door to find the mechanic inside, with no other customers.
"Can you get me a ship?" Logan said, trying to catch his breath.
"Who's asking?" The mechanic crossed his arms. Apparently this guy didn't recognize him.
"Logan Watts." He answered. The mechanic started to say something, but Logan held up one finger to stop him. "I know what you're about to say. You aren't supposed to be talking to me. But I really need your help, and if you just give me a ship then I'll be out of your hair in five minutes. I promise that no one will ever find out."
"I don't sell ships, but chances are I can get you the parts to build one." The mechanic told him. "That is, if you have the money."
"I do, and I'll pay in full as soon as I get what I need." Logan shot back. He knew how to build a ship, he just needed supplies.
"I have a shipment of parts coming in next week. Think you can wait until then?" The mechanic asked.
"Alright." Logan nodded. The circuits on his face started glowing, and he made a digital note on the mechanic's computer. It was the code for his phone. "Contact me when it gets here."
He turned around and walked out the door. Everyone seemed to be ignoring him, which was actually very helpful. It would make it easier for him to keep a low profile that way. He went to a few stores to buy supplies, then to the edge of the city. He walked far enough away that he'd go unnoticed, but close enough that he could still see the city. Then he used his supplies to build a small shelter. That would probably last him a while.
Sure enough, a week later he got a notification on his phone. The message was an unknown number, saying that the parts for the ship had arrived. He went back into town and back to the shop. There were two large boxes next to the front desk that hadn't been there last time.
"Welcome back." The mechanic said. "Everything's here, and there's a blueprint in the box."
"Thank you." Logan nodded. "How much will it cost?"
"6,000." The mechanic answered. "Plus an extra 100 if you want something to carry the boxes with."
"Done." Logan's face began to glow again. A little machine on the desk beeped, and the parts had been paid for. He left with the boxes, which were sitting on a metal plate floating behind him. He brought them back to the shelter he'd built and got to work.
~2 months later~
Logan wiped the sweat from his forehead with the sleeve of his shirt. He stood up and looked at the ship. It wasn't anything special, but it was done. There wasn't even a second seat. Hopefully it would start. He opened the door on the side, sitting down and hanging his jacket on the back of the seat. Then he shut the door. He took out his phone and made it track his ship. Not the pod that had been stolen, but the main ship where his lab was. He balanced his phone on the steering mechanism. He pressed the button next to it, and he heard the engine start up. A rare smile crossed his face. The ship lifted off of the ground and he travelled out of the planet's atmosphere. Finally, he was on his way back home.
It didn't take long to get back to his ship, only as much time as it had taken to get to Xialea VII in the first place. He was lucky that his ship was stationary most of the time. He parked the new pod in the space where the old one had been previously. The second he was safely inside the ship, he practically tripped out of the pod and bolted to the stairs up to his lab. He fell into his desk chair in front of his computer and began typing frantically. He had given Patton a built-in tracking device a long time ago, if he could just get the signal then he'd be able to find him. And Logan knew how to get the signal in under a minute. A map appeared on a screen, with a tiny blue dot in the middle. That dot was Patton. Logan never knew why he decided to make it blue despite the fact that Patton was gold, it just felt like it should've been blue.
Based on the location displayed on the screen, Patton was currently located on Planet #739049287193. It didn't have a proper name because of the non-existent population. But now Patton was there, which meant that other people must've been there as well. However terrible the situation was, it was admittedly smart of Patton's captors to bring him to such an isolated planet. The trip would take two days, but he didn't have that kind of time. He would have to take the whole ship, that way he could travel using hyperspeed. Plus Patton would have a home to come back to right away. It was a flawless plan, in Logan's opinion. He transferred the data of Patton's location to the monitor in the pilot's bay.
Once he got there, he sat in the chair at the front of the room. He turned on Autopilot and typed his desired location into the search bar. He switched the ship into hyperspeed. The surrounding landscape became blurry as the ship began moving faster. Within minutes, everything returned to normal. He looked at the surface of the planet below him. It could only really be described as unpleasant. A shroud of gray storm clouds covered the sky above him. The ground below appeared to be solid rock, stalagmites rising from the ground. Some of them were taller than others, some even looking like mountains.
Logan opened up a screen that would give him a closer view of the ground. It was the same all around, and it was so boring that if he wasn't doing something important then he might've fallen asleep. It took a while to find anything. And when he finally saw something, it wasn't what he expected. Near the base of one of the taller stalagmites, he saw what looked like a person cleaning a motorcycle. He stopped the ship, and the person looked up at him with wide eyes. Apparently a giant ship being parked above you is easy to notice. He opened the trapdoor that was behind his chair and climbed on to a ladder as it was being lowered to the ground.
When his feet touched the ground, he started walking. The stranger in front of him stood up from where they'd been kneeling next to the motorcycle. Upon closer examination, Logan noticed that this person had scales. But only on half of their face. Logan approached them and held out his hand.
"Hello. My name is Logan Watts. Do you mind if I ask you a couple of questions?" He requested, waiting for a handshake and an introduction.
"Dalton Sanders. Sure, shoot." The stranger answered. Logan quickly drew back his hand. He was talking to Dalton Sanders, the infamous thief. He narrowed his eyes.
"Have you seen an android around here recently?" Logan asked, even though he already knew the answer.
"Took you long enough." Dalton snickered. Logan tensed up at the sight of his fangs. "Come inside, he hasn't stopped talking about you for two months."
"Are you serious? No protest or anything?" Logan raised his eyebrows. That only made Dalton laugh even more. Logan was already starting to get tired of this guy.
"Not at all. We'll give him back, we just needed you for something. He was actually really nice to have around, he's good company." Dalton turned around and started walking away. Logan followed him through a door that he hadn't noticed before, into a large cavern.
"Logan!" He heard Patton's voice from the back of the room and saw him jump up. The android ran towards him and tackled him in a hug, holding on tight. Logan was surprised at first, but soon settled into it. "I missed you."
"I can tell." Logan said, a hint of happiness in his voice. "I came to bring you back."
"Oh, that's wonderful!" Patton pulled back with a smile, which quickly shifted into a frown. "But… there's just one thing I need to talk to you about. I-"
"Hey, hi, I'm Remus. Sorry for the interruption, but I have a question for you Mr. Scientist." A new person said, his tone revealing that he wasn't actually sorry. "Why do you not have an accent, but the android that you build does?"
"What? He doesn't have an accent, I would know, I programmed him that way." Logan frowned.
"Okay here, we just listened to you talking, now listen to him talking." Remus gestured to Patton.
"I don't have an accent. At least, I didn't think I did." Patton said. Turns out Remus was right, Patton had a very light Southern accent.
"How is that possible?" Logan muttered, talking to himself. "He developed feelings a long time ago, but I never expected this many changes to his programming…"
"I'm sure it's not that big a deal, Logan. Everything that's happened so far is minor." Patton reminded him.
"I suppose you're correct." Logan nodded. "There isn't a point in dwelling on minor issues."
"Speaking of issues, can we go back to what I was talking about before? Even though this is kind of a big issue." Patton requested.
"Of course, what is it?" Logan regained his focus.
"So, you know how a while ago I was talking about wishing I could meet another android? Well, it happened. But he really needs our help." Patton told him.
He brought Logan further into the cavern, stopping in front of someone sitting in a desk chair. Logan could tell immediately that he was looking at an android. A very damaged one, from the looks of it.
"Can he speak?" Logan asked. The android's eyes began to glow purple. Patton pointed to the computer.
"No I can't. But I can do this if you want." Words appeared on the screen.
"He can connect to the computer." Patton explained quickly. Logan nodded.
"Alright. Firstly, what is your name?" He asked.
"I don't have one. They call me Anxiety, but I have a number too." Anxiety told him.
"And what is that number? It could be a code for something." Logan looked at the computer screen as numbers started appearing.
"229187912."
"Okay." You could tell Logan was concentrating. "If you split that up into sections, it could be letters. 22-9-18-7-9-12. If this is intentional then those numbers could turn into a name. The 22nd letter in the alphabet is… V. 9 is I, and that appears twice. 18 is R. 7 is G. 12 is L. So when you put those together in order, it becomes V-I-R-G-I-L. Virgil."
"Virgil." Anxiety smiled widely. He'd never had a real name, only ever his nickname.
"Do you want us to call you that now?" Dalton asked.
"Definitely." Anxiety (or Virgil, rather) smiled even wider. Dalton's heart soared seeing him so happy.
"Now, on to the next order of business." Logan brought them back to the current task. "What specifically is wrong with you?"
"I can't talk, or move. I have a glitch in my programming, but I don't think that's fixable." Virgil told him. "Basically, what I was built to do is predict outcomes. But the glitch makes it so that I can only see the bad ones."
"And how long have you had that glitch?"
"I've always had it. That's why I was a prototype."
"So, can you fix him?" Remus asked, a hint of hope appearing in his voice. Logan realized that all eyes were on him.
"Yes, yes I can." Logan sighed. "Patton, the ship is outside. Can you bring them to my lab, and make sure they don't cause any trouble?"
Patton nodded. "Come on, guys. We can take the motorcycle up to the ship, that'll make it easier."
As they left the cavern, Logan couldn't help but wonder why Patton was being so nice to them. They were criminals, not to mention the fact that they'd literally kidnapped him. It was just like Patton to remain optimistic in the face of danger.
Once everyone else had gotten to the ship, Logan took out his phone. He'd gotten to Patton, but he still had one more thing to find. The stolen escape pod. When he got the tracking signal, he couldn't believe what he saw. For one thing, the escape pod was on the very same planet. But the dot that showed its location was jumping around the screen. It didn't seem to be going in any sort of pattern, but it would occasionally come back to the same spot. Logan decided that must've been where it was. It wasn't even that far away, only a couple of minutes of walking. Once he got to the ship, he saw it right away. That was one thing he expected. One thing he didn't expect was to have a sword pointed at him right away.
"Who are you and why are you here?" The stranger asked. Based on his appearance, he was from Xialea VII.
"My name is Logan Watts. I believe you stole my ship." Logan answered. The stranger's eyes widened, and he lowered his sword.
"I did, and I'm really sorry about that, but I promise I had a good reason." The stranger explained.
"And what exactly is that reason?" Logan said skeptically.
"I… needed it." The Xialean said. Logan rolled his eyes. "It's true! It was a matter of life and death. You see, I'm… a prince! And I really needed to leave the planet, because I didn't like it there at all."
"But you're Xialean. They don't have royalty, they have a president."
"But you see, that's the thing. I'm not from Xialea VII, I'm from Xialea VI." He lied, hoping Logan wouldn't catch on. "That was the original kingdom, then some of the citizens broke away and made the city that became famous. I recently took a trip there, but apparently they still have some sort of grudge against us. I'm Roman Northbrook."
Roman was telling so many lies, and he knew it. But it wasn't like he was ever going to see this guy again. This was his chance to be who he'd always wanted to be, even just for a few minutes. At least he'd told the truth about his name.
Logan didn't acknowledge the introduction, simply moving on to examine the escape pod. It was completely broken, and had clearly been crashed. No wonder the tracking device hadn't been working.
"Okay, you know what?" Logan turned back around to face Roman. "Come to my ship with me. I'll bring you home, and you clearly need supervision anyway."
"Please don't take me home! I can't go back, they'd probably kill me for running away in the first place." Roman told him. At least that last part was true. "I can be useful, I'll be like a security guard or something!"
"We'll cross that bridge when we get to it." Logan began walking back towards the main ship. Roman followed him, not really knowing what else to do. The moment they got back to the ship, everyone was staring at them.
"Who's the new guy?" Dalton raised his eyebrow, pointing to Roman.
"This is Roman Northbrook, he is the person who stole my ship. He'll be staying here for a while." Logan explained. Roman waved awkwardly.
"Cool." Remus smiled. "Don't worry, some of us steal things too."
Virgil didn't have a computer to connect to, but he would've been to busy staring to say anything anyway. It was quite possible that this was the most beautiful person he'd ever seen. He looked away quickly. If androids could blush, he'd be as red as the streaks in Roman's hair.
Logan looked around at the group in front of him. He'd come to this planet expecting to get Patton and be on his way. Instead he'd gotten Patton, two thieves, a broken android, and a runaway prince. What was he getting himself into.

World Building #1
Note: this is not intended as a how to guide, this is simply my process (so far), but it may help you with your own projects.
Whenever I start a world building project, I always start with a basic map first. There’s no right or wrong way to start, this is just how I do mine. It makes it much easier for me to figure out how everything works together (weather, environment, currents, travel, mountain ranges etc) when I have a basic idea of how the land looks. The following example is my current project and subject to many changes as things evolve.
I’m not going to go into how I figure out shapes and all that, it’s not particularly interesting, but importantly (for me), I line in where the equator and tropics would be. From this, we can see where things would logically sit, and I need my world to be logical, let’s blame my years of geographical and geological studies. These areas are the hottest and wettest parts of this world and where you’ll find monsoons and rainforests. Knowing where the rainforests are is a particularly important thing for me with the story involved with this project. I may expand on this in a later post.
Next thing I do is I make lists of things that I would like to figure out about my world. I normally start with the environment, but all I’ve figured out so far is rainforest, and only on the southern continent where the story will be set; that’s all I really need right now. I already have a story idea, and I want to move forward with the people, culture, customs, religion etc. I can figure the rest out later. Without further ado, here is my list of things to consider and build on.
Note: there is a lot of crossover between these sections, I’ve tried to keep to the main subject at hand with the questions asked so it’s not quite as confusing.
Culture
naming conventions (for both people and places) - how do the names work? are children named after their fathers or mothers? other family members? the alignment of the stars? a physical characteristic?
societal structure including hierarchy of class systems and distinctions between them - how different is a poor person from a rich person?
government type and structure - this will have it’s own section further down
housing (architecture, building materials etc) - where and how does this society live? family groups/tribes/cities?
celebrations - which events are celebrated and how (eg births, deaths & marriages)?
festivals and rituals
music, dance & art - what kind of music is listened to? do they dance? what kind of artwork exists in this world/society? are there paintings/sculptures/poetry/songs/musical instruments?
cultural relations - how does this culture think of itself in relation to other cultures? are they better than the next country/town over? are they proud of their achievements or jealous of those of others?
marriage/partnerships - do people get married? is there a ritual involved?
gender roles and sexuality - are there distinctions between genders? will one be shunned from society for not fitting the social norm?
clothing - what do people wear? what is their clothing made of? does it reflect their job or class?
jobs and employment - which jobs are required for this society to function? which are the best and worst jobs?
monetary system/trade - does this society have money? how much is it worth? is it a bartering society? both?
education - are there schools? are there class requirements to attend? how much do they learn? is this a literate society? what is the age range of students?
games, sports and recreation - what do people do for fun? what games do they play? how do children entertain themselves? is there a professional sports league?
food - what food do they eat? are they a predominantly vegetarian society? are they cannibals? do they only eat fish every second weekday? what is the standard fare? are meals eaten in public? with family only?
communal projects - when a house or temple needs to be built, does the community come together? are there monuments? who builds these things? who is in charge of organising them?
military/police force - are there either in this society? is it voluntary? is there a draft? how exactly do they use/abuse their power within this society?
Religion
importance - how important is religion to this society? to what extent does the population share beliefs?
origin story - is there one? how does this society believe the world/universe/god/s came to be?
end of times - what does society believe will happen? is there fire? does the sun explode? a meteor land on a god’s head who then takes his rage out on the planet? does society even care or think about it? will it really happen?
mythology - what are the myths prevalent in this society? do they have any religious beliefs at all?

This is far from a complete list, there are countless things I’ve missed and a hundred questions I haven’t asked, but this is basically how I do it. I find the things that need to be known and then ask questions. And this, my friend, is how I world build.
If there’s interest, I may do a series of posts of my actual answers to these questions, they’ll be much more bite-sized though, I promise.

Myanmar! 11/25/2016
Finally I am heading into the country that I came to work in! Here are a few facts about the Republic of the Union of Myanmar:
Myanmar is the second largest country geographically in Southeast Asia after Indonesia and sits between the worlds two most populous countries, China and India. It also touches Bangladesh, Tibet Autonomous Region, Laos, and Thailand as well as the Andaman Sea and the Bay of Bengal.
For another comparison Myanmar is slightly larger than Germany and Italy combined but slightly smaller than the great state of Texas.
Myanmar has a population of just over 51 million people (25th most populated country) which is made up of 135 ethnic groups who all have their own language.
Although incredibly rich in natural resources such as teak, crude oil, opium, rubies, sapphires, pearls, jade, and precious metals, Myanmar is one of the worlds most impoverished countries, with most of the population working as day laborers just to have enough money for food. The income gap in Myanmar is also among the widest in the world.
Over 90% of the country has absolutely no emergency medical response at all. In the areas that do have responders, patients are almost worse off than the rest of the country because responders are working with little or no training and have hardly any supplies, so they tend to use an Alpha Rescue approach to patient care.
With less then 3% of its GDP spent on healthcare, Myanmar has some of the worst hospitals in the world. Hospitals are few and far between, and are relatively expensive so many people can’t afford care at all. Doctors and nurses do their best but have hardly any medicine or supplies to work with. The waiting rooms are always full of patients laying on the floor hoping to be seen.
The same afternoon the nurse and I limped the broken truck to the mechanics shop in MaeSot I met up with a couple of team members from M-E.M.S. who were also getting ready to join the rest of the crew in Myanmar. They have been working on finding solutions to our ambulance start up challenges from the Thai side of the border and now we will see what we can figure out in Myanmar. They were driving one of our very nice customized ambulances (that we aren’t allowed to import) so there was plenty of room for all of us and our gear plus some supplies.
Because it was late in the day we decided to send some supplies over via an alternate route now, spend the night in Thailand, and cross the border in the morning to catch the once daily bus to Yangon.
On our way to the hotel we happened across a bad motor vehicle collision between a truck and a motorbike so we stopped to help even though we didn’t have any ambulance supplies with us. The Thai responders were happy for our assistance and we stayed and talked for several minutes after the pt was taken to the hospital.
The next morning after breakfast we parked the ambulance and took a songtau to the border where we had to go through Thai immigration, walk across the long Thai-Myanmar friendship bridge, and go through Myanmar immigration on the other side.
Unfortunately there was a problem at Thai immigration that put us behind schedule. As soon as we were free to go we hustled our way across the bridge, sweated our way through Immigration again and then made a run for the bus stop several blocks down the road. We were a good 20 minutes late but one of our other teammates had went on ahead and “persuaded” the bus driver to wait for us.
After we were in our seats the bus started on the 10 hour drive to Yangon. That’s right! 10 hours to drive 256 miles! The reason it takes this long to travel such a short distance is the twisty winding nature of the road, and its incredible narrowness; our bus took up its entire width! Whenever two vehicles need to pass each other (as in pass each other coming from opposite directions) one of us has to pull off onto the extremely narrow shoulder so there’s enough room for the other one to make it by. Usually the buses get preference and don’t have to come to a complete stop but they still have to slow way down from an already slow speed to make sure their mirror doesn’t hit the other vehicle’s especially if it’s also a big rig.
Several things are noticeably different between Thailand and Myanmar right off the bat. We are back to driving on the righthand side of the road for one. However, any benefits that this may offer is completely offset by the next observation; Burmese drivers are crazy drivers. As soon as you cross the border the speed of non-bus traffic picks up with drivers swerving, driving on both sides of the road, honking like it’s going out of style, and disregarding all common rules of the road.
For all that though the general pace of the rest of the country is much slower than Thailand, with ox drawn carts, elephants, and manual labor still common and holding their own against encroaching mechanization. For example, all the roads in Myanmar are built completely by hand. Workers can be seen hammering rocks into appropriately sized gravel along the side of the road. At the construction site other workers clear trees, smooth the ground and lay down sand. Then they boil tar in the 55 gallon drums it’s sold in and pour it on top of the sand and gravel to make the asphalt road surface (this could be part of the reason why the road is so narrow lol).
Buddhism is also incredibly central to life in Myanmar, where the peaceful sound of monks chanting in ancient Bali can often be heard playing on loudspeakers along the road in towns and villages and on the bus. There are so many temples and pagodas that it is hard to drive anywhere and not be able to see at least one, leading to Myanmar’s nickname “The Golden Land”.
Once we finally arrived in downtown Yangon we hired a couple taxis and after stowing all of our supplies we proceeded with fantastic speed to our company headquarters where we spent the night.
In Myanmar you have to let the local authorities know where you are staying within 24 hours of arrival, and as a regular tourist you can’t simply stay with a friend or anywhere you want, you have to stay in a government approved guest house. However, our business visas allow us a lot more leeway to be able to sleep in an apartment or building associated with our company (M-E.M.S.)
Well once the landlord of the apartment complex that our company address goes to found out that 2 foreigners were staying in her not-approved-for-tourists building she had a conniption. We explained the law and assured her that everything was fine but we were unable to mollify her. After the second night she had us kicked out and told our team members who live there full time that they would not be able to renew their rent contract once it expires.
So for the next few days we had to stay in a hotel and in addition to meeting with the rest of our team and various officials and other people who may be able to assist us with our ambulance and lodging challenges we also had to look for a new office location. Once we finally found one we then had to move all the boxes and crates of gear and medical supplies down four flights of stairs, across town, and up another 4 sets of stairs!
Something else we were focusing lots of time and energy on was our ambulance problem: Namely, we felt strongly that we needed an ambulance in order to operate an ambulance service!!
After looking around and weighing our options we decided to get a Land Cruiser series 70 and have it modded into an ambulance that would be rugged enough for the mountains we will be operating in. Many hours were spent drawing up plans for how we wanted it to look and how the patient care area would be laid out.
After 5 whirlwind days in Yangon we drove back to the bus station on Thursday, December 1, to make a trip to the northern state capital to meet with a first responder organization who wants us to give them additional training. As we settled into our seats for the 24 hour journey we looked forward to the main perks of bus travel in Myanmar: blaring, terribly made movies whenever the Buddhist chanting is not being played, ice cold AC, and frequent unscheduled stops so the bus crew can pick up bootleg passengers and make some extra money on the side.
Every few hours we had scheduled 30 minute stops at little roadside restaurants where there was also bathrooms and street vendors selling fruits and snacks. These stops were great because they gave us the opportunity to get the blood in our legs moving again and warm back up to a life sustaining temperature before continuing on!
After all day and all night we arrived in town and after going to our guest house and getting settled we walked around and were able to visit a cultural museum and the market to unwind and relax.
The rest of the weekend we had meetings with Rest In Peace Department first responders and other groups. There are many eager young responders here who volunteer to go on calls and take patients to the hospital in one of their three hearses, but they have from zero to two days worth of medical training because until now they have mainly focused on extrication and transportation of bodies. We met with them several times and scheduled an 8 day first responder course for them in January.
Monday morning we were back on the bus headed south, and by the time we arrived back in Yangon on Tuesday we had been on the bus for a total of 52 hours!
Even though we were exhausted from our journey we spent the rest of the day meeting with a Ferno medical equipment importer and distributor representative discussing various options for outfitting our new ambulance and other supplies we would need for our January training. Then we went back to our new office/apartment where we organized all our supplies and packed our backpacks with everything we would need for the next couple weeks in Thailand as well as the upcoming expedition in India. Then we went to bed!
The next evening on the 7th a couple of us took the night bus back to MaeSot where we spent the next day contracting out our ambulance modifications to Thai businesses willing to cross the border to do the work since Thai materials and fabrication are of better quality. Afterwards we picked up our original ambulance and headed south to Kanchanaburi where four other team members had already gone to prepare for India!

Google parent's project to develop rescue robots tripped over its own shoelaces
Alphabet, the company that owns Google, had been developing large robots since it bought a number of robotics start-ups in 2013. However, it just kneecapped its own bipedal robot research division, Schaft.
Schaft's bipedal robots can walk, balance and be used to save human lives at dangerous or disaster sites, but also to help workers in construction or manufacturing. During the New Economic Summit in Tokyo in 2016 the company showed off a robot lifting heavy weights in a gym and righting itself when an engineer pushed a tube under its feet. The unnamed prototype also walked stiffly up stairs, extending its legs to account for stepping onto different heights, shuffled sideways like a crab and was capable of walking across a rocky beach and snowy terrain. Stairs have long proved an obstacle for robots, including Dyson's 360 Eye smart vacuum, which can navigate your living room without any trouble, but can't get upstairs to clean your bedroom.
Schaft had its origins in the University of Tokyo’s robotics lab, where engineers built bio-inspired robot legs with metal bones, muscles, and tendons. The team later moved to more conventional systems, modifying industrial robotics hardware to be more powerful and precise. In 2013, Schaft, competed in and won the first round of Darpa's Robotics Challenge, which tests bipedal robots’ dexterity and movement in disaster scenarios and in difficult terrains. The team claimed that their custom actuators (basically a robot’s muscles) were ten times stronger than competing designs. Videos of Schaft’s S‐One robot competing in the DRC went viral.
Schaft was one of eight robotics firms that Alphabet acquired in 2013, a group that also included Boston Dynamics, best known for its flashy YouTube videos and animal-like robots. This flurry of purchases was led by executive Andy Rubin, the former head of Android who left Google in 2014 with a $90 million exit package and positive PR after accusations of sexual harassment.
Following the departure of Andy Rubin, Alphabet scaled back its ambitions. Rubin’s departure reportedly left a leadership vacuum in the company’s robot division (known as “Replicant” internally). According to Business Insider, the group had originally planned to release a consumer-orientated product before 2020, but soon found that the tech they’d bought was further from commercialization than they’d originally hoped.
In the wake of Rubin's dismissal, Boston Dynamics was sold to Softbank Group in 2017. SoftBank is no stranger to the robotics arena. The company's robots, Pepper and Nao, are found in education, healthcare, retail, and other industries. The Japanese company originally agreed to buy Schaft too. But, after one or more Schaft employees refused to be part of SoftBank, according to people familiar with the matter, SoftBank’s attempt to buy Schaft apparently broke down.
After this failed attempt, Alphabet said it had been unable to sell Schaft and would close the division instead: "Following Softbank's decision not to move forward with the Schaft acquisition, we explored many options but ultimately decided to wind down Schaft, "an Alphabet spokeswoman told news site Nikkei Asian Review. The dissolution of Schaft is expected to be complete by the end of the year, and Alphabet has said it would help relocate the division's employees involved in development to other departments within Alphabet or help them find jobs elsewhere.
TechCrunch says the sale is part of Alphabet’s changing ambitions in robotics, which are now angled towards “non-humanoid robots and industry-led solutions such as robotic arms.” Schaft’s work certainly doesn’t seem to fit this vision. Its most recent robot prototype was another bipedal creation, designed to navigate stairs and homes.
Despite this, it might be that Alphabet lost its nerve too soon in the robotics game. Earlier this year Boston Dynamics announced plans to start selling its quadrupedal Spot Mini robot commercially in 2019. CEO Marc Raibert said he wanted the company’s bots to be a flexible and ubiquitous platform that other companies could build on. In other words, he said, it would be Android of robotics. So how distant or how close is a future where bipedal robots have become useful tools? It's difficult to predict. But they would bring mobility to areas that wheeled platforms can’t reach (i.e., stairs, curbs, etc) and where legged systems are best suited to address problems. The trick for manufacturers, when it comes to making real-world robots a profitable business, is that you want something that you can build many of, something relatively affordable, and something that you can use efficiently in terms of energy consumption as well as the cost and the hassle of maintaining it.
