Did anyone read The Wildwood Chronicles when they were little? It's a "children's" fantasy series with really cool illustrations by Carson Ellis, but tbh, they were so long and in-depth that I'd argue they're more like YA novels.

I'm just really into this right now and I was wondering if there's even just 1 person on this site that Is, too.

Yapping About: Wildwood

So, Wildwood.  It’s taken me quite a while to figure out just how I felt about the novel.  On the whole, I like the book.  I don’t mean to damn Wildwood with faint praise, but it was okay.  Believe me, I wanted to LOVE this book.  Colin Meloy, should you ever stumble across this silly little blog post, I think that you’re the best and I would marry you in a heartbeat.  But Wildwood didn’t give me that wonderful, familiar feeling of anxiety as I neared the end.

I’ll say again that I did like the book.  I loved the Wildwood bandits, especially Brendan.  I have a weakness for rugged, hirsute men and Brendan fit the bill.  He’s a strong leader with a passion for his fellow bandits and for the Wildwood.  Dude is the fictional epitome of bearded hotness (the real life epitome is Zach Galifinakis or Ray LaMontagne).

                     I also loved the mystics.  I think Iphigenia is a boss.  I loved the scene with the mystic trainee and Prue where you first see what the mystic’s meditation can accomplish.  I would love to be able to make grass weave itself.  I also loved the scene with the blackberry brambles.  All the denizens of the North wood seem pretty cool.  I don’t know how I would feel with bear neighbors but otherwise, everyone seemed neat.

Prue and Curtis, our little half-breed protagonists, were delightful.  Curtis is a little naïve, but who wasn’t at that age?  Prue is fairly courageous, especially when she decides to go back to the wood to retrieve Mac.  I like that Curtis’s source of Woods magic is left unanswered.  I’m very curious to see just how he’s connected to this world.  I think that his “weird” relatives are a red herring; personally, I think that he may have some weird connection to Alexandria.  I mean, she kept saying all the things about how he is just about the right age, and his look is very similar to whatever.  It sort of makes you think.

As far as Alexandria goes, did you guys get a strong hint of the White Witch from the Chronicles of Narnia?  I mean, she’s ethereally beautiful, smart and cunning, and tempts Curtis with power and wine (I would have totally caved for the wine).  Maybe it was just me, but I don’t know.

Do you guys think that Alexandria is coming back?  I thought there was a little bit of foreshadowing going on with the Elder Mystic mentioning that she had just changed form and was now a part of the Ivy.  I would be interested to see how that would work out, but I’m sure that it will take a while.  Also, did you guys know that Prue had the mystic ability to commune with the trees?  It was kind of predictable, right?  When all she had talked about was how cool it was and then suddenly, at a pretty critical moment, it works? 

Finally, Carson Ellis’s illustrations: the best!  I have been a longtime fan of her artwork, but it just really added to the book.  I loved the full-page color panels, but all the little black and white illustrations.  Anyone with Wikipedia access knows that the illustration of the badger pulling the rickshaw is Carson’s favorite and it’s mine too!  I even set it as the lock screen photo on my phone.  For those who don’t know, Colin though that Carson would enjoy drawing a badger pulling a rickshaw, so he added it into the story.  Maybe it’s my romantic side, but I died when I heard about it.  I think that is one of the sweetest, loveliest “everyday” romance things ever.  They are a lovely couple and a talented creative duo as well.

So, what did you guys think about the book?  Any other weird theories you’d like to bandy about?  Are you excited for the next two entries in the trilogy?

UPDATE: Colin Meloy announced on twitter yesterday that the first draft of the next Wildwood book, Under Wildwood, is complete.  So, yay!  More Wildwood and more illustrations!
