"ANOTHER WORLD, ANOTHER TIME, IN THE AGE OF WONDER. A THOUSAND YEARS AGO...."
PIC INFO: Resolution at 1942x2916 -- Spotlight on unused artwork initially intended as poster art for American dark fantasy/family film "The Dark Crystal" (1982), co-directed by Jim Henson✝ & Frank Oz. Artwork by "Joann." Universal Pictures.
"Another world, another time, in the age of wonder. A thousand years ago, this land was green and good, until the Crystal cracked. For a single piece was lost; a shard of the Crystal. Then strife began, and two new races appeared: the cruel Skeksis, the gentle Mystics. Here in the castle of the Crystal, the Skeksis took control."
-- THE SCROLL KEEPER/HISTORIAN (the film's opening monologue, screenplay by David Odell)

Atomic Thrills & Silver Screen Chills: A Fresh Look at 1950s Sci-Fi and Horror
With so many movie guides available today, choosing the right one can be a challenge. Their quality varies widely. Some are excellent works, like Bill Warren’s Keep Watching the Skies. Others are disappointing efforts, like Rob Craig’s It Came From 1957. One thing is certain, though—1950s films are getting more coverage than ever. For me, the best era for movies is the 1950s. This was a time when…

We're Back! Cinema Subterrain's Fall 2023 Screening Schedule!
Tumblr media
After taking the summer off, Cinema Subterrain returns this September with a new slate of films for the fall of 2023!
We start off with an animated double feature on September 23rd - it's JEM AND THE HOLOGRAMS VS BARBIE AND THE ROCKERS!
There's an interesting toy industry story behind these two rockin' doll IPs being released in such promixity to one another, and we'll talk about that at the beginning of the screening. Who's Songs are Better? Come watch the animated debut of both properties and cast your vote!
Then, just in time for Halloween, on October 28th, we pay homage to our favourite monster costume of all time, the Showa Era Godzilla! This screening will feature 1968's Destroy All Monsters and 1969's All Monsters Attack. Both films are just chocked full of Kaiju, and were directed by Godzilla's original director, Ishiro Honda!
Finally, we round out the fall with an evening of documentaries about comic books, which is wholly appropriate since Cinema Subterrain is held in a comic shop! First, we'll watch Ron Mann's Comic Book Confidential, which focuses on indie and underground creators. Next well watch Marisa Stotter's She Makes Comics; a documentary about women working in comics!
A big thanks to LA Mood Comics and Games, who've been supporting Cinema Subterrain since our first run from 2004-2006.
See you at Cinema Subterrain!

CINEMATOGRAPHER DAVID EGGBY... WAS LITERALLY STRAPPED ONTO A BIKE FOR PARTS OF THE SHOOT."
PIC(S) INFO: Spotlight on cinematographer David Eggby filming action sequences while strapped to Vigilanties [motorcycle club] President Terry Gibson. The bike they rode served double-duty, and sported one of the iconic hand-laid fairings. 📸: ❓
OVEEVIEW: "In addition to the stunts, the bikes were instrumental in the actual filming. Cinematographer David Eggby, a lifelong motorcyclist, was literally strapped onto a bike for parts of the shoot. “I couldn’t wear a helmet because you can’t operate a camera with one; it gets in the way,” he explains. "Terry Gibson was the president of the Vigilanties. He was riding, dressed as Goose. They put a seatbelt strap around both of us and we went for it, and you can see on the speedo that it’s cracking 180 kilometers per hour [about 110 mph]. The camera was quite heavy. I relaxed once, the map box got caught in the windblast and I nearly lost it!""

In the face of total annihilation by the omnipotent Beast's unstoppable hordes of Slayers, two hostile neighbouring nations form an alliance against the common enemy. However, the otherworldly adversary is all-powerful, and before long, a handful of mismatched defenders are willing to walk a shitload to ensure the land's future. In this suicide mission, the magical, five-edged weapon known as the Glaive is their only chance of survival. There is a Cyclops, Giant White Spider, Red Lava Water, National Parks, a man who has a specific set of skills (one of them is not taking care of his family), a guy who sells candy, and a man that once dressed like a nun. Join Dan and Brock as they gush about how cool this movie really is!

Macskafogó: Hungary’s Cult Classic Animated Masterpiece
Introduction:
"Macskafogó" (Cat City) is a beloved Hungarian animated film released in 1986, directed by Béla Ternovszky and written by József Nepp. Known for its witty humor, satirical undertones, and groundbreaking animation, it has become a cult classic in Hungary and beyond.
Plot Overview:
The film is set in a world where cats and mice coexist, but with a twist: the cats, once predators, now face resistance from an alliance of intelligent mice. When the cats develop a terrifying weapon capable of eradicating the mouse population, an international spy adventure begins. The story follows Grabowsky, a James Bond-esque mouse agent, tasked with saving his kind from feline domination.
Why It’s Unique:
1. International Flavor: Although Hungarian, the film borrows heavily from global pop culture, including nods to spy thrillers, crime movies, and Hollywood tropes.
2. Satirical Edge: The film cleverly critiques Cold War tensions, global politics, and societal issues through the lens of anthropomorphic animals.
3. Timeless Humor: Packed with puns, slapstick comedy, and quirky characters, "Macskafogó" appeals to audiences of all ages.
Legacy:
"Macskafogó" remains an iconic part of Hungarian culture, often quoted and referenced. It was so popular that it inspired a sequel in 2007, though the original remains the true gem. Even for non-Hungarians, it offers a window into Hungary’s creative spirit and unique humor.
Where to Watch:
Although it may not be widely available internationally, "Macskafogó" can often be found with subtitles on various streaming platforms. It’s a must-watch for animation enthusiasts and fans of classic European cinema.
