....."Shortly before his death in 1991, Atwater (rather clinically) explained to political scientist Alexander Lamis what he and his fellow strategists were thinking as they developed the ad: “You start out in 1954 by saying, ‘N——r, n——r, n——r.’ By 1968 you can’t say ‘n——r’—that hurts you. Backfires. So, you say stuff like forced busing, states’ rights, and all that stuff. You’re getting so abstract now [that] you’re talking about cutting taxes, and all these things you’re talking about are totally economic things, and a by-product of them is [that] blacks get hurt worse than whites. And subconsciously maybe that is part of it. I’m not saying that. But I’m saying that if it is getting that abstract, and that coded, that we are doing away with the racial problem one way or the other. You follow me—because obviously sitting around saying ‘We want to cut this’ is much more abstract than even the busing thing, and a hell of a lot more abstract than ‘N——r, n——r.’”

I think that stands as evidence; one of the two major American political parties has deliberately, for more than fifty years, fanned the fires and divisions of racial hatred and misunderstanding. As their plan.

Consider a statement made by Trump supporter Crystal Minton, who said to New York Times reporter Patricia Mazzei in reference to Donald Trump, “He’s not hurting the people he’s supposed to be hurting.” She was complaining that the 2018–2019 government shutdown, implemented by Trump, was harming her and the people of her small town, who were largely dependent on government jobs at the federal prison in Marianna, Florida. In Minton’s statement, we hear the revenant of Atwater’s remark: “Blacks get hurt worse than whites.”

But by 2019, the subtext had become the text. Atwater had played a very large role in this GOP battle plan, often referred to as “The Southern Strategy,” architected in 1968 by the Nixon campaign to use race as a wedge issue. But I didn’t know that, not for sure, in 1989. In 1989, it was painful and bewildering. And, looking at it from the vantage point of 2020, I didn’t know that not only would it continue over the next thirty years, but it would get ever more sophisticated and savage, turned to cringing effect against Barack Obama and finding (one must hope) its apotheosis in the mind-numbingly regular statements and taunts of Donald Trump. I have to say, as an intellectual proud of what I think of as my sophisticated irony, it would almost be funny, like a Saturday Night Live or Dave Chappelle skit mocking outdated ignorance, if I were not the parent of a child who has had her childhood blighted by all this.

I also didn’t know as I wrote, and neither did many others, that the officer who apprehended Horton and brought him to justice, Yusuf A. Muhammad, was African American. Muhammad, a corporal in the Prince George’s County Police at the time, shot and wounded Horton, bringing him in. That wasn’t in the ad. It also wasn’t in the ad that Corporal Muhammad was the recipient of two degrees from Johns Hopkins, that he would go on to be a police chief, or that he would finish his illustrious career with the Metropolitan Police of Washington, DC.

The everyday occurrence that the best and worst of our society, a valiant and studious and learned police officer and a vile criminal, were of the same race had been conveniently overlooked by the Republicans in their rush to stereotype Black males. And perhaps it points to what I have come to think of as the general incompetence on these matters of the Democratic Party and their strategists that they did not make an advertisement pointing this out. But what we were left with was a masterpiece of cruel political magic stirring up fear and division that went virtually unanswered and that has been allowed to morph and metastasize over the succeeding decades."

Debra Bauguess, 65

Debra Lou Bauguess, age 65, of  North Wilkesboro, passed away Sunday, December 1, 2019 at Wake Forest Baptist Health-Wilkes Regional. Debra was born December 19, 1953 in Wilkes County. She was preceded in death by her father, Clint Call; mother, Evelyn Sparks Lyall; brother, Randall Call; and sister, Mary Acosta.

Surviving are her husband, Mark Bauguess; daughter, Tina Bauguess Durham and spouse Brock of Roaring River; son, Michael Bauguess of North Wilkesboro; grandchildren, Gralan Durham, Hayden Durham, Allie Brooke Durham; several nieces and nephews.

Graveside service was  December 3  at North Wilkesboro City Cemetery with Rev. Victor Church officiating. The family has requested no flowers. Memorials may be made to the American Stroke Foundation, 6405  Metcalf Avenue, Suite 214, Overland Park, Kansas 66202. Miller Funeral Service is in charge of the arrangements.

Shelba Jean Church, age 82, of Wilkesboro, passed away Sunday, December 1, 2019 at Forsyth Medical Center. She was born February 20, 1937 in Wilkes County to Cecil Lee and Mildred Marie Whittington Church.

Mrs. Church was a member of Lewis Fork Baptist Church. She was preceded in death by her parents; brothers, Rex Lee Church and Cecil Ralph Church.

Surviving are her husband, Loyde Church; son, Tim Church and spouse Courtney of Wilkesboro; grandchildren, Madalyn Church and Alexis Church; brother, Kenneth Reece Church and spouse Sheila.

Service was December 3, 2019 at Lewis Fork Baptist Church with Pastor Dwayne Andrews and Rev. Sherrill Wellborn officiating. Burial followed in the Church Cemetery.   Flowers will be accepted. The family has requested no food, please. Miller Funeral Service is in charge of the arrangements.

Randall was born on Wednesday, March 18, 1970 in Wilkes County to Linda Mae Wagoner.

Randall is preceded in death by his brother Rex Allen Parsons and step father Rex Elisha Parsons.

Randall is survived by his wife, Kimberly Porter Wagoner of the home; daughters, Kaitlyn Nicole Wagoner of North Wilkesboro, Erica Hannah Wagoner of Wilkesboro; mother Linda W. Brown and Christopher "Chris" Brown of North Wilkesboro.  

A graveside service was held December 1, at Pleasant Grove Baptist Church Cemetery with Rev. Brady Hayworth and Preacher Scott Wagoner officiated..

In lieu of flowers memorial donations may be given to the Pleasant Grove Baptist Church Cemetery Fund.

  Margaret Call, 76

Mrs. Margaret Elizabeth Shepard Call, "Doll" passed away Tuesday, November 26, 2019 at Wilkes Senior Village.

Funeral services were November 30, at Fishing Creek Arbor Baptist Church with Rev. David Welborn and Rev. Allen Bouchelle officiating. Burial was in the church cemetery.  

Mrs. Call was born January 2, 1933 in Wilkes County to Clarence and Ermma Staley Shepard. She was retired from American Drew Dining Room Plant. Mrs. Call was a member of Fishing Creek Arbor Baptist Church. Doll as she was called, was a hard worker. She always had an open door for friends, family and her neighbors. She was an excellent caretaker for family and friends, loved to sew, cut hair and especially loved her grandchildren and was a Jack of all trades.

In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by her husband; James Phillip Call three sisters; Beatrice Williams, Mary Curry and Betty Minton, two brothers; Mack Shepard and Joe Shepard and two grandchildren; Barney Call and Emily Call.

She is survived by a daughter; Peggy Byers and Robert Foster of North Wilkesboro, four sons; Rex Allen Call and wife Nancy of Wilkesboro, Charles Call and Michelle Stanley of Wilkesboro, Randy Call and wife Shirlene of Wilkesboro and Terry Call and Regina Dowell of Wilkesboro, nine grandchildren; Tabitha, Jason, Angie, Anthony, Zach, Dusty, Jamie, Amy and Amanda, sixteen great grandchildren and a brother; David Shepard of North Wilkesboro.

  Nadine Anderson, 86

Ms. Nadine Opal Anderson, age 86 of North Wilkesboro, passed away Tuesday, November 26, 2019 at Gordon Hospice in Statesville.

The family received friends November 29, at Reins Sturdivant Funeral Home.

Ms. Anderson was born December 1, 1932 in Wilkes County to James Cicero and Drusey Soots Anderson. She retired from Carolina Mirror. Ms. Anderson loved to cook, bake and read. She loved to read her Bible and loved her family. Nadine was crowned the Farmer's Queen and Miss Wilkes County of 1951.

In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by a son; Scott Tevepaugh, two sisters and four brothers.

She is survived by seven daughters; Vernell Powers and husband Gary of Moravian Falls, Bobbie Glass of Moravian Falls, Phyllis Spicer and husband Barry of Yadkinville, Terri Guion and husband Bobby of Taylorsville, Julie Tevepaugh of North Wilkesboro, Brenda Tevepaugh of Wilkesboro and Beth Pennell and husband Jody of Stony Point and a son; Robert C. Tevepaugh of North Wilkesboro, eleven grandchildren; twenty one great grandchildren three great great grandchildren and two step grandchildren .

Stella Colleen Couplin, age 70, of North Wilkesboro, passed away Monday,

November 25, 2019 at her home. Stella was born August 22, 1949 in Buncombe County to Joseph Wayne and Anna Belle Cothern Simonds. She was preceded in death by her parents; and sister, Betty Catherine Waddell.

She is survived by her daughter, Michelle Erwin of North Wilkesboro; brother, Larry Wayne Simonds and spouse Crystal of Granite Falls; sister, Barbara Simonds of North Wilkesboro; grandson, Zachary Michael Erwin of North Wilkesboro; brother-in-law, Chris Waddell of North Wilkesboro; several nieces and nephews.

Memorial service will be held at a later date. Miller Funeral Service is in charge of the arrangements.

  Brenda Church, 72

Mrs. Brenda Kay Henderson Church, age 72 of North Wilkesboro passed away Sunday, November 24, 2019 at SECU Hospice Home in Yadkinville.

Funeral services were November 30, at Second Baptist Church with Rev. Danny Dillard and Rev. Wiley Boggs officiating.  Burial was in the Church Family Cemetery.       Mrs. Church was born July 27, 1947 in Iredell County to Mull and Frankie Keever Henderson.  Brenda was Phi Theta Kappa in college, world best cook, accepted with full honors to the University of Chapel Hill at age 59, she loved spending time with her grandchildren, best private detective, huge Tarheel fan and world's best mother, grandmother and a caring loving wife.  She was a member of Second Baptist Church.

In addition to her parents she was preceded in death by a sister; Paulette Cloer, a brother; Jerry Henderson and fur baby; Tiny.

She is survived by her husband; Eugene Church of the home, three daughters; Gina Hall and husband Gregory of Hays, Lori Church of North Wilkesboro and April Wilburn and husband Roger of Hays, two sons; Johnny Eugene Church of North Wilkesboro and Matthew Boyd Church and wife Haillee of Millers Creek, twelve grandchildren; Maria Church, Matthew Church, Monica Church, Brittany Church, Zoey Church, Reed Church, Cameron Hall, Noah Hall, Chance Kohlmeier, Autumn Transeau, Hunter Transeau and Philip Wilburn, four great grandchildren and a brother; Paul Henderson of Statesville.

Back home from the KBF/FLW event on Lake Oauchita….working on a formal recap, but this is my personal “I always dreamed of being here, there goes Hank Parker, this was AWESOME (except for only finishing 24th – but it was out of 72 anglers)” post.  To be honest, I don’t want to spend time talking about the fishing; though it is a beautiful lake, it was tough….I would rather just talk about the experience…from my viewpoint…from the perspective of a guy who believes in the kayak community, that this community does exist, and is real and full of great folks who care about each other; that KBF, Hobie and the hundreds of local kayak groups are all a part of…one family with a passion for being in plastic boats (I always hear Scott Beutjer’s voice when I say or type plastic boats!) – fishing, paddling, pedaling, motoring or just floating.

Let me get this out of the way first….

I made the biggest fan errors of my life at one of the biggest events of my life!  The backstory…my favorite bait for bass fishing (that isn’t a top water bait) is the spinner bait.  Not just any spinner bait…the Mann’s Classic spinnerbait marketed with Hank Parker’s name on it back in the day.  There was a show I watched that showed Hank talking about the St. James River, and his technique, that had me buy one…and keeps me buying them (when I can find them!) when I lose ‘em….and got me 7th in the 2018 KBF National Championship…

…and here he was, walking past me while I was not only attending, but being a part of an FLW event (a dream!)…and I chased him like some crazed stalker, introduced myself…talked about his time in Hobie’s….then said thank you for the time and walked away…without a picture!!!!  I had finally met one of the biggest influencers of my fishing, in my (limited) success as an angler…and I didn’t take a picture!  I had 2000 dollars or more in cameras and lenses hanging around my body, a cell phone….and not a picture!!!!   Fail!  I did capture a pic (or fifty) of him on stage.

So…back to the KBF/FLW event….we made it to Arkansas barely in time for the dinner with DeeZee, YakAttack and the folks from FLW.  Joy and I had just met Arlie Minton’s wife Crystal (I already knew Arlie), Darrell Cornelius and his wife Tanya, Jim Davis (fellow Tennessee dude whom I also knew), George Nemeth….and we talked as if we were life-long friends.  While none of us were strangers…we were all already Facebook kinda friends, not all real friends, the “I know you?  I think we are friends on Facebook” who share a common interest friends….I sat there thinking this is the kind of folks that kayak tournament fishing attracts. Good folks who enjoy sharing time with fellow humans, and while kayaking broke the ice, it was not long before we discussed occupations and families.  Joking and laughing with and about each other, we formed new bonds (now real friends as far as I am concerned!) that will be among my most cherished memories when I cannot pedal out any longer.

During the line to get our food, you could hear people talking and laughing…we were about to fish for a lot of money (a lot of recognition), but you didn’t hear any of that in the conversations.  There was a bit of pre-fishing talk, but for the most part it was old and new friends enjoying each other…strengthening the connections that pull this community together and make it strong.

The days I spent on the water, the area I chose was shared with George Nemeth.  We talked about what was and wasn’t working for us, where we were from, what brought us to Arkansas…smiled together about how bad our day was going…thinking about it, those days make me miss the interactions if I go a couple of weeks without a tournament.

When Henry Veggian talked on the biggest stage of anyone’s fishing career after landing in 7th place…he thanked the folks at Albright’s Sunshine Store and Cafe.  I mean, the biggest event and he recognized a local place that had become a part of Dwayne Walley, Cory Dreyer, Shelly Efird, George Nemeth and his own stories during their time in Arkansas.  They had all been sharing a house together and found a local place that adopted them; and they appreciated each other.  Other than announcing Clint Henderson as the champion…and the two Arkansas guys Garret Morgan (3rd place) and Dwain Batey (2nd place)…and this were still very close in comparison…no other words elicited the response that Henry’s words did – the crowd cheered like the café had won….the next time I am in the area, rest assured that I will be finding the Sunshine Store and Cafe in Arkansas!

I bring this up because it too reminds me about the spirit of this group.  It reminds me that I am a part of something bigger than us all…again, whether you believe it or not….this community, this willingness to share the stage with people who just in passing touch your life…I am all in for life!  When you hear what else Henry was willing to share on tournament day (read official recap coming soon); you will truly feel the soul of this group…I love it!!!

Well, need to work on the official recap.  I just wanted to say how proud I am to have been a part of this KBF/FLW/DeeZee/YakAttack/TourneyX event on Lake Ouachita. Say what you will about Chad Hoover, KBF, the Hobie BOS and AJ Mcwhorter…me, my mama…my daddy… (not Joy, dishrag or sis; we might just throw down)…..this was an excellent event…this is an excellent group of folks…and I am grateful and so blessed to be part of all that the community is and has to offer.

Want to give a personal shout out to the folks at the Rose Retreat, the place where Joy and I stayed in Hot Springs Arkansas.  They have built a little space close to town (walking distance) with several little cottages – ours was the Monet’s Cottage.  It isn’t the kind of place you would take a group of guys to spend a week fishing, but it was a great place for Joy to spend the day knitting and reading while I was on the lake.  Cindy and Jim didn’t realize I was bringing a trailered kayak with me, but even with limited parking for all of the other guests, still found a way to make it work for us.  Each and every day, we talked about fishing and they always asked how I had done on the lake.  If you go back to the area and need a clean, quiet and well-appointed space for the trip….check them out on Evolve.  And don’t miss the tiny Elvis gnome….or the pirate out front…quirky cool kinda place!
