A proper 'Jeremy Hunt': Mayor Perry breaks graffiti promises
KEN LEE reports from Thornton Heath on a persistent piece of social messaging that just won’t go away Paint job: Mayor Jason Perry is quick to take credit for graffiti ‘blitzes’. But the reality on the streets is far different Offensive graffiti on two council signs on Blakemore Road in Thornton Heath that include the “C” word, and which dozens of primary aged children have to walk past on their…

Shoreditch
Shoreditch is an example of an area which has embraced arts & culture to reshape the area and become more attractive for locals and visitors.
In the 1970s shoreditch was a “desolate concrete jungle”
Vandals took advantage of the area, and the graffiti was seen as a “sign of urban decay” - similar to the graffiti in croydon prior to the arts quarter.
The view of street art in the area swiftly changed as artists such as banksy arose in the scene - bringing life to the streets with controversial art which began to be appreciated by locals.
In the last decade street art has become more and more legitimised, being respected as a genuine artform by galleries - this allowed creatives from the area to have a voice which has fostered a better sense of community and freedom within the area.
This has become a pull for tourists and has increased footfall.
Within my response I would like to take inspiration from the way shoreditch has embraced its local arts and culture to rebuild the public’s engagement in the area. I believe this is an effective way to tackle the death of city centres, therefore within my response I want to find a way to create a better view on creatives in the area.

Coffee Van. @mr_tinto Such a long time since I shot this roll. This was a normal street scene. Then all of a sudden, it wasn’t. We looked back to the time when we could queue next to each other, chat, shake hands. The act of getting a coffee was is a simple pleasure. Now more appreciated. Found whilst out and about on my training course.
Funny thing is I have walked past this for the past two weeks and have noticed it once, today I just happened to look up from my phone and I struck me.

Jason Perry's Croydon: a place with all the wrong priorities
Perverse priorities: an image that encapsulates much of what is wrong in Croydon today Inside Croydon’s loyal reader was strolling along the High Street in the town centre this morning and captured this wonderful scene Our reader dropped us a note in which they say, “Think this illustrates nicely Jason Perry’s Croydon. “Two workers, who look to be from Croydon BID judging from their waistcoats,…

Croydon Street Art
Street art also has a thriving scene with croydon.
The arts quarter is a project which embraces this, allowing for legal graffiti walls where artists can produce a variety of street art to liven the streets of croydon.
The idea was initially inspired by the melborne lanes which invited local street artists to bring life to the area.
For example, a paint jam was held in croydon which resulted in over 1,500 attendees - this got the ball rolling with a plan to create 140 mural spots in the city creating a huge opportunity for local creatives.
The arts quarter has resulted in a footfall increase of over 400%.

Banksy also played a part in building this scene in croydon, opening a window display shop selling a range of art produced by the infamous street artist.
