I'm a big apologist of Aziraphale/Wilde for jealous Crowley reasons and I do wish there were more fanfics about the topic. Or even not about Wilde, just the men in the gentleman's club. Crowley was supposedly asleep at the time but he is clever, he would figure it out somehow (memorabilia Aziraphale keeps in the bookshop, for example) but I don't think he would really bring it up. He would be jealous in silence.
On the other hand, I'm also an apologist of Crowley/Da Vinci. It's not everyone that has a bloody sketch of the Mona Lisa with the message "For my friend, Antonio" or something along those lines (I think it was written in Italian? I can't remember anymore). And Crowley has kept it in pristine condition for centuries!
By now, everyone knows Leo was queer, yes? Fantastic.
Crowley is attracted to art like music and statues, but you know what else? Engineering! Because he used to be a Star-Maker, and what was Leo besides an amazing artist? An engineer! Do you really think Crowley wouldn't be attracted as hell by his inventions? Especially the flying machine?
Now, with the idea that they knew each other and probably spent a lot of time together in the workshop and drinking and what not...well, have you looked at Crowley? He's gorgeous! And artists are attracted to pretty things. My headcanon is that Leo painted Crowley at least once.
Now, a good story would be if the painting was lost in time and eventually found and it made a tour through the best museums and made a stop in London, eventually.
Aziraphale would be excited, Crowley would be curious, and they would go together.
When they arrive in front of the painting Crowley goes very still and Aziraphale gasps.
"But! But that's you!"
"Mhnn eh how would I know? Plenty of red heads back then in Italy, I assure you."
Aziraphale points at the picture.
"I would recognize that face anywhere, Crowley!"
"Aw, angel, would you? What a flatterer."
"That's not the point! This painting...this painting is gorgeous. But aren't you a bit too...au naturel?"
"Agh, eh, I mean. Plenty of semi nude paintings to go around from that era."
"Yes, but in that case the artist and the muse were quite close." Gasp. "Anthony J Crowley, you had a...a thing with Leonardo Da Vinci?! While I was in Spain?!"
"Ngk. I wouldn't call it a thing. More like...a tiny thing."
So yeah, while Crowley is jealous on the inside, Aziraphale (especially if they were already in a relationship) would be very obvious about it and very vocal. Even petty if we want to go down that route.
"Please, angel, you've been avoiding me for 2 days."
"I refused to be kissed with the same lips that kissed Da Vinci."
"Oh yeah? What about your 'friend' Oscar Wilde?!"
Aziraphale gasps and blushes.
"Why the hell would you bring Wilde into this conversation?!"
Crowley steps closer.
"I know exactly what you did with him back in the 1800s. And yet I never complained did I?"
"...since when?"
"The 40s."
"And you never told me you knew?!"
"Because I don't care! I mean, I do, it hurt a little. A lot. But I got over it. That was a century ago, Aziraphale. And I have you now, don't I? I won in the end."
Sorry, I easily get sidetracked. My point is: more Crowley/Da Vinci fanfic or even art are needed.

My top 10 favorite Cas things, in no particular order:
being a petty little bitch
constantly just absolutely drenched in blood, usually his own
asking Dean to help him with Claire because surely Dean will understand this angry teenaged girl (and the fact that he's correct)
the Godstiel era. Just the whole thing. Fuck Sam. Fuck Raphael. Fuck homophobes and Republicans. Pine for Dean while having hate sex with Crowley. Go off king!!!
Lounging sluttily in a bathrobe and sighing about how much he misses Dean when he was slowly dying in season 10 (I assume this is actually his Default Dying Behavior and he just usually dies too quickly to be able to indulge. See lounging sluttily in a hospital gown in season 5 and moping around with Netflix in season 11)
the head tilt & squint maneuver

Listen I am so ready for the petty "silent treatment" era but also there is this layer of absolute devastation that I hope is explored too
because while Aziraphale is thinking that Crowley is being a stubborn arse, Crowley is thinking I'm not good enough

Patterns - I'm a big fan of in media res (it worked for Homer and it works for me) and so I like to start in the middle of things. I'm also trained to write hooks for people with short attention spans, so my first lines tend to be crunchy. The one exception is the first on the list, which is from speak easy, swing hard, the 1920s Prohibition-era Avengers AU I wrote for @nostalgicatsea as part of @marveltrumpshate. I wanted it to evoke the wild, chaotic tempo of a hot jazz number (something like the intro to this) so most of it is a pile-up of a long run-on sentence, and the writing continues in this fashion until Tony shows up to calm things down, whereupon the paragraphs go back to being a brief couple of lines each. I learnt this trick from seeing how translators handle action sequences in wuxia novels.

What Does Aziraphale Actually Believe, Part 6: Philosophy Time
This is a series of my takes on what Aziraphale believes through the timeline of the show. It is all my personal interpretation, and I am happy to hear others. You don’t need to read them all in order, but know that I am coming from a perspective on Aziraphale’s machinations that can be difficult for people without a psychology background to follow without the first two as a primer. The quick version is that Aziraphale has a set of beliefs that exist in some form or another within his mind. However, at any given moment, only some of them exist ‘with awareness’ or as I am putting it here, conscious!Aziraphale only has access to the beliefs that the rest of his mind, veil!Aziraphale, allows him to know about. The context of the moment will determine what lives on the surface and what stays buried behind the veil, whatever arrangement best prevents a threat to Aziraphale’s sense of self and makes whatever he is inclined to do feel right.
This post finishes the minisode and flashback content, starting from 1800's Edinburgh through to the 1960's bit. There is a lot of attention given to how Aziraphale conceptualises good and evil, and the roles of angels, demons, and humans within the divine system. About 3k words.
A Spot of Body Snatch
Some juicy bits of philosophy show up in the Edinburgh flashback. While Aziraphale has been able to disagree with the archangels, or think that they are misguided about God’s will, the general moral esthetics of what heaven is supposed to represent have largely been left intact. The idea is you put a bunch of people out in the world, you see who does the good things and who does the bad things, and you reward and punish accordingly. Aziraphale still believes that is a component of the ineffable plan, and advocates for some version of it in the modern era. At this point he thinks that it’s all going rather well, and you can easily sort the good and bad humans apart. He doesn’t look too closely, because that’s not going to help preserve his sense of self. He has been on the earth for over 5800 years at this point. His ignorance to the disadvantages of the poor is willful. See end note.
At the start of the adventure, Aziraphale believes body snatching is wicked. It is a morally bad thing to do, people who do it are morally bad. People who finance it are morally bad. This is an intuitive judgement, it feels wrong. As is commonly the case with intuitive judgements, it gets messy on the application, the devil's in the details. When he miracles the freshly dug up body into a skeleton, why does that feel right? Ostensibly the wickedness of the body snatching is the desecration of the dead. By turning the body into skeleton soup, Aziraphale has personally desecrated the dead. You could make the argument that it was a necessary evil in the name of a greater good, but Aziraphale doesn't make that argument, he claims that what he did was directly a morally good act. Why? Because it felt good to him to do it. He was sticking it to the morally bad people by making their life harder. Sometimes Aziraphale is a petty bitch like that.
When he learns that the body snatching operation functions to alleviate human suffering, his feelings change first, then his judgement changes. After the talk with the surgeon, holding the tumour in a jar, participating in the body snatching feels like helping to relieve human suffering, therefore his involvement in it is in alignment with the ineffable plan, therefore let's go do it. It is worth noting that for all Aziraphale emphasises forgiveness in his interactions with Crowley, he doesn’t ask for it here. There are many factors involved in that, and @takeme-totheworld has some very relevant things to say on the way Aziraphale engages with forgiveness from ex-Christian perspective.
I think one of the other factors involved is that Aziraphale is pretty normalised to reshuffling his beliefs to feel better about himself, and a feature of that normalisation is not fully taking accountability when you shuffle a disavowed belief out. Veil!Aziraphale allows just enough awareness for conscious!Aziraphale to express that his previous belief was incorrect, and then it’s yeeted like that belief never existed. Accountability, apologising, asking forgiveness, all of that would require conscious!Aziraphale to retain awareness of the offending prior belief and prior action. Believing he did a bad thing before breaks his ability to believe that as an angel he is incapable of doing bad things. He doesn't need to believe the absolutist stuff all the time, but it can't coexist in conscious awareness with the knowledge that he has been wrong. It is a known problem with shame responses, they sometimes motivate us to eliminate our awareness of our actions rather than motivate us to make amends.
When Wee Morag is mortally wounded, Aziraphale decides he is going to break heaven's rules, and asserts that the thing he will do, which isn't allowed by heaven, is the right thing to do. Since Uz Aziraphale has been able to believe that the policy of the institution of heaven is wrong and has been willing to go against it. He can shuffle that belief in when needed, and then shuffle it back out to go back to his day to day believing in heaven most of the time. His inclination to break the rules to save Wee Morag is in keeping with that shuffling ability, but we can observe that he slips into it a lot more comfortably than he used to, though not as comfortably as we might like, and not fast enough to save her.
People Get a Choice
What stands out in this era is his continued attachment, just previously in the minisode, to the idea that angel = good and demon = evil. For all he is willing to believe heaven is wrong, he will not let go of categorising the angels as ‘good,’ even into the modern era. It is deeply tied to his internal understanding of his personal relationship to God as an angel, and therefore his sense of self. He knows the other angels would deliberately let Wee Morag die. But the other angels are still angels, and therefore ‘good.’ Crowley, who is working to alleviate human suffering, is ‘evil’ so long as he remains a demon.
The exact phrasing is: "I am good. You, I'm afraid, are evil. But people get a choice." As for Crowley being evil, yes, Aziraphale thinks Crowley is nice. Yes, he thinks Crowley is a good person. Yes, he 100% loves Crowley as he is. But Crowley’s existence is conceptually evil in the abstract through no fault of his choices. Humans can choose. Crowley can't. Aziraphale’s attachment to this point drives most of the serious conflict between them. The worst things Aziraphale says to Crowley are on this theme. So why is he so defensive of it 5800 years in? What is this position doing for him? What does believing this save him from believing instead?
What Aziraphale is protecting himself from is the existential crisis of the pointlessness of it all. He is keeping himself from believing that the entire set up of the sides of good and evil, and humanity having the choice between good and evil, is all a sham. He is protecting himself from believing that he has no side. That there cannot ever be an idealised heaven that represents good. It isn’t just unachievable, it is incoherent. That his behaviour isn’t about furthering the cause of the greater good, he’s just doing what makes himself happy and deciding that is the right thing after the fact. That his sense of what feels right is no substitute for actual ethical principles. To prevent himself from processing all that, he will believe that Crowley is ‘evil’ in the abstract.
Aziraphale's mind likes to protect itself from responsibility. "You're an angel, I don't think you can do the wrong thing." Aziraphale grasped at straws to take that at face value from a fallen angel, but he grabbed that straw and he didn't let it go. Believing angels are inherently naturally good helps support his inclination to intuit morality. He can just let his innate angel vibes tell him what the right thing is (it’s whatever feels right to do) and he can be confident that is good, because he was an angel when he wanted to do it, and he is still an angel after having done it.
However, this is a very precarious defence for a lot of reasons. If we are working with a definition of ‘good’ and ‘evil’ that have no relationship to personality or behaviour, that’s not very reassuring. Aziraphale cant prove to himself his actions are morally good actions if his continued status as an angel is utterly unconnected to his actions. If angelic / demonic status defining celestials as good and evil is connected to actions or inclinations, how does Aziraphale parse the questionable actions of the other angels, and does he think less of Crowley? I suspect that for the most part he is generating definitions moment to moment that serve the interests of whatever else he is trying to believe at the time. Entirely abandoning the association of good/angel and evil/demon feels too much like abandoning his internal concept of God, so he won’t. Thinking Crowley is a bad person because he is a demon would be equally horrific, so he won’t do that either. He will roll through shifting definitions and avoid looking too hard at the consequences of his positions.
One option for what he can believe that I suspect has been growing stronger, is believing that God has a plan for Crowley that involves a deliberately unjust fall, to return him from later. It solves a lot of the above conflicts. He doesn’t have to consider if Crowley had a choice in becoming a demon, he doesn’t have to believe Crowley ever ‘did the wrong thing’ voluntarily while an angel, it makes it easier for him to rationalise that he is personally incapable of doing the wrong thing, it helps him rationalise his own relationship with Crowley. The only real downside is the part where Crowley would never in a million years endorse this viewpoint, and at some level Aziraphale must be aware of that because he doesn’t tend to express anything like this openly. However it very much looks to me like the missing piece that makes everything else fit. See end note.
Obviously!
Sometimes thinking Crowley's fall is part of an ineffable plan won't stop Aziraphale from being petty about Crowley's demonic status when that opinion isn't on his mind. "We may have both started out as angels, but you are fallen." It might be the rudest version of all of Aziraphale's 'holier than thou' moments, and in the context of what Crowley had likely recently been through, that was really unnecessarily mean.
Now for one of my more counter intuitive takes; Aziraphale is mean to Crowley because he puts him on a pedestal. When you believe someone is so magnificent, so perfect, so destined, you can believe nothing you do or say is capable of causing them harm. Then you can get really careless, particularly if the person you're putting on a pedestal doesn't readily show you their pain. If they are so grand, and your opinion doesn't have any value anyway, why bother considering what you say?
When asked for holy water, Aziraphale's mind goes to a suicide pill, because Aziraphale could not cope with being a demon. He’s had a lot of time to think about it now, he has come to understand that Crowley really isn’t “free to do whatever [he] want[s]” and I think he would genuinely prefer not to exist than to be in Crowley’s position. He projects his feelings about how horrible it would be for him onto Crowley, but also thinks Crowley is the stronger one, and the better one. Crowley just got back from being yanked down to hell for doing a good deed. A good deed that involved bullying Aziraphale into giving his money away, which he wouldn’t have done on his own. Crowley’s good deed for which he was likely tortured involved pressuring an angel into doing the right thing, after Aziraphale had been too slow to properly help the humans, while accurately sassing him for not understanding the impacts of poverty on humanity. It's not hard to see why Aziraphale might believe Crowley would prefer not to be a demon. There are times he makes a better angel than Aziraphale. Although to be fair, Crowley did overdo it on that hole.
Date Night
A toast ‘to shades of grey’. Aziraphale’s choice of words, Aziraphale’s choice to make it a toast. It’s an interesting pair of choices. Aziraphale has been in the middle with Crowley for thousands of years, but this is the moment he lets himself acknowledge the value of shades of grey. What does it mean, given everything Aziraphale has already done? Aziraphale had been believing everything he had done was 100% good, he just had convoluted justifications. Now his convoluted justifications only get him as far as very light grey, and he is finally starting to make his peace with that.
Does that mean he isn’t thinking of himself as 100% aligned with God? I think sometimes yes, but also sometimes no. The other option is that he doesn’t think God is 100% good anymore. Each version represents a massive shift. If we understand Aziraphale’s journey to being at peace with himself as a Daoist one, and I think there is a lot of subtext to that effect, Daoism doesn’t do absolutist good and evil. Things just… are. The divine isn’t a refined extreme. The Dao isn’t ‘good.’ It is. Full stop. I think Aziraphale will consider God less good more readily than he will consider himself misaligned with Her.
Why now? Because he realised, fully into his conscious awareness, that he was in love with a demon, as a demon. Nothing else fits the toast because nothing else changed in terms of Aziraphale’s philosophical alignment. Many flashbacks have brought us new things Aziraphale is willing to do that might distance himself from the ranks of the institution of heaven. Nothing new happened on that front in 1941. Many flashbacks have shown Aziraphale having new ways he is willing to understand the human world. Nothing new happened on that front in 1941. Something shifted in the way he understands his sense of self and his relationship to God, and one of the few things that still ties back to that is the role of angels and demons in the universe. It wasn’t what he was willing to do that broke new ideological ground, it was what he was willing to feel.
That willingness to feel broke a psychological wall for Aziraphale, and I believe with that wall down he can now think of himself and Crowley as somewhat ‘human aligned’ when it comes to certain aspects of their morality. Aziraphale talks with Crowley about the shades of grey they prefer. The way the term prefer is used here implies they have options. Options implies a choice. Choice was supposed to be for people. They may not have the ability to choose their employer, but they are both choosing to be a bit grey, and now they can say it to each other out loud. I will come back to this point in a future post.
You Go Too Fast For Me
He knows he is in love with a demon, but he still isn’t ready to act on it. He says maybe one day. I think all of him wants Crowley, but not all of him wants to want a demon. I think some of the fandom doesn’t want to process this about Aziraphale, but really think about it. If Crowley was an angel rescuing him and the books in the church, then in the 60’s offering to take him anywhere he wants to go, do you really think he would still say no? There is of course a conflation between their roles on opposite sides of celestial conflict and Crowley’s metaphysical status as a demon. It's the being on opposite sides that's the problem. I don’t think Aziraphale has any sort of disgust reaction or aversion to demonic features or demonic energy. But the metaphysical status of demon is the origin of their opposite sides situation, and Aziraphale isn’t prepared to feel like that is entirely arbitrary, even if it’s part of a bigger ineffable plan. Too fast isn’t a forever no, it’s check back later. Aziraphale knows it will ‘feel right’ down the line, and I don’t think that depends on demonic status going away, just on him needing time to process his feelings. For Aziraphale’s lifetime, 1941-1967 is the blink of an eye.
Part 6/10
End Notes
On willful ignorance: In my opinion, IRL willful ignorance mostly takes the form of a motivated lack of awareness. If a particular perspective, interpretation, relevant factor, explanation, ect… doesn’t line up with a person’s sense of self or behaviour, it stays out of awareness because the background mechanisms of the mind work to keep it out of awareness. The information they do not absorb is targeted. It isn’t random, it follows a strategy, and yet, they have no idea that they are doing it. It is… exhausting… to engage with that.
On pedestals: It has been observed that the level of misogyny in a country correlates very highly with a tendency to put women on pedestals. The more prevalent attitudes about how wonderful and perfect women are for doing all the womanly things so well predicts both a strong demand that women conform to those expectations and harsh penalties when they don't. Putting a person on a pedestal is a way to feel like you are honoring that person when you are actually threatening them.
On God having a plan for Crowley: I’ll be going into further detail as to why I think Aziraphale believes this and what it means in a future post, probably the final post. The closest we see him get to expressing this perspective to Crowley is the “May you be forgiven,” and if that is where he was going with it, that was like, the worst way he could possibly have put it. I do wonder if the 1941 apology dance could have come from Aziraphale telling Crowley he thinks God has a martyr plan for him. I think internally acknowledging that he was in love could have led to him saying it, and I think Crowley would be very valid in wanting an apology if he had. That said, I think the apology dance could also be explained by Aziraphale almost getting them caught with the magic show, and taking his time to reveal that he had swapped the photos.
While we're talking about old apology dances, I think the 1650 one probably had something to do with Anne Greene.

Big fan of the idea of Crowley just being an absolute petty bitch and doing a minor miracle so if Aziraphale ever tries to look in on him while he's in Heaven all he sees is like... Crowley sleeping or just watching some inane TV show with a bunch of whiskey bottles in front of him. And Aziraphale doesn't even realize until he goes to Crowley finally for whatever reason and finds out that Crowley doesn't actually live in that flat anymore and hasn't for years.
Meanwhile, Crowley absolutely had his sad girl era, but entered his bad bitch phase fairly quickly (repression is a skill) and has been doing nothing but heinous shit (ie corrupting Muriel and planning a way to stop the Second Coming) since

so I haven't seen s2 yet but extrapolating from the original premise of Good Omens as a Cold War allegory (and further supported by Heaven's corporate aesthetic), the idea Heaven is the West and Hell is the Soviet Union is tied with the notion that demons Fall from rejecting the ideology of Heaven (capitalism) and seeing it beyond reform.
IN THE SPECIFIC CONTEXT OF Cold War era politics¹, Aziraphale is a reformist and Crowley, like all the other demons/revolutionaries, is radically anti-establishment. (Unfortunately, Hell is as immune to bureaucratic malaise, petty infighting, and other office politics as the Soviet Union was.²)
Footnotes
¹Sorry, I really don't feel like debating Obama-era politics. If you think 2013 was the same domestic and international environment as 1991, that's a you problem. Please keep it that way.
²Very, very mune.
#good omens#gomens s2#rambles#i want everyone forever to know about the cold war aspect and the Implications but also: the fear of someone who only knows about#the soviet union from 40 year old propaganda. dont do it to me ill flip

Hi! Could I please the dorm leaders reactions when their fem!S/O ends up in the office because she kicked someone who was trying to look up her skirt?
Azul Ashengrotto:
Hearing that someone was looking up your skirt made Azul feel some type of way, but it’s hard to pinpoint at first. He had been bullied plenty back in the day and he had never managed to strike back, only now finding he had power to do something. He considered sending Jade and Floyd after them but it’s a personal matter that he wants to see to himself. Your assailant is tied up in a contract in which they’ll never buy their way out of, essentially subservient to Azul’s whims and by extension yours.
Idia Shroud:
Idia is shocked to hear it but is even more at a loss of what he can do to help you. He’s never had an issue listening to you complain or vent to him but this type of situation feels like it requires an extra step. Was this his revenge era? Not for himself but for a loved one? He brainstormed with Ortho one night for little petty things they could do to make your attackers life worse. It’s almost nothing to find embarrassing photos and post them all over Magicam, your attackers reputation thoroughly ruined by the time Idia’s finished with him.
Kalim Al-Asim:
Kalim is in your corner one hundred percent! Even if you had kicked the person for simply saying something rude, he would argue that you were in the right. He had always been your biggest fan and he might come on a little strong as he tried to cheer you up, knowing you had to be feeling bad after all that happened. He wants you to know that it wasn’t right that someone did that to you as well as Crowley getting you in trouble instead, saying he’d interfere in a heartbeat and take the punishment himself if the person tried to bother you again.
Leona Kingscholar:
Leona is quiet when you tell him, and quiet is always dangerous when it comes to him. You can already see the scheme forming in his head, even if you told him not to get involved you were unlikely to get through to him now. A slight against you was a slight against him in his book, and he wasn’t one to let disrespect slide. He doesn’t quite tell you what he did but you’re offered an apology from Crowley; he admitted the other party came forward and admitted to being the aggressor, looking rather worse for wear though he didn’t expand on that any further.
Malleus Draconia:
There’s a dangerous glint in Malleus’ eyes that even makes Lilia a little nervous, despite the fact he looks rather interested in seeing what he might do. He does give Malleus a reminder of his position and the consequences that can come from drastic, emotional responses to serious situations but Malleus assured him everything would be fine. You’re greeted by your attacker on their hands and knees, begging for your forgiveness as they shook and warily eyed Malleus standing off to the side.
Riddle Rosehearts:
Riddle is a little conflicted. It’s against the rules to use physical violence against another person when not specifically in an environment where you’re supposed to brawl… But it’s not exactly within the rules to disrespect the boundaries set by society. He upset you at first as it seemed like he was almost blaming you, but he apologized for making it seem so. He couldn’t excuse your rule breaking but he would find a way, within the rules, to make the person suffer to the full extent of the law for invading your privacy.
Vil Schoenheit:
Vil was no stranger to people invading his personal space or trying to get little glances of parts of him he didn’t often show off in public. He can imagine how uncomfortable you might feel wearing a skirt again and encouraged you to do what you could to make yourself feel safe. He’s irritated that Crowley got you in trouble rather than the person who attacked you, and he has Rook on the case, hunting down the person who had committed the crime. Rook was more than happy to help, telling you that it would be a crime if you couldn’t walk around looking as elegant as you normally did.

How do you feel about Thelema? I personally think it's petty appropriated antisemitic bullshit. Almost at bad as Golden Dawn.
Appropriated antisemitism to make "Spiritualized Ayn Rand But Make It Goth"
I find it interesting from an academic perspective, Crowley was an influential occultist for a number of reasons and its easy to see why his work was so catchy to the people of his era. So much of his work falls into that category of "This would be brilliant if you were actually jewish/native/muslim/etc but you had to be a racist about it."
To be perhaps over-fair to modern Thelemites, a huge chunk of modern thelema seems to be an attempt to distance themselves from Crowley. Seeing that he invented the religion, I would say their work is cut out for them.

THIS. Aziraphale is a lot of things. He is silly. He is soft. He loves his romantic era classical composers and his crepes. He is a stimmy lil goofball. He is occasionally bitchy, often a bit petty and all the time a bundle of nerves. What he is NOT, is stupid, or weak, or cruel. Not to humanity. Not to Crowley. Aziraphale learns. Aziraphale grows. Aziraphale has the wherewithal to understand just how much danger they are constantly in. He has always done the best he could with odds stacked incredibly against him and Crowley both. He is not trotting off to do heaven’s bidding like a “good” angel. He is going behind enemy lines in a desperate bid to save everything he loves.
The 'Aziraphale Still Believes in Heaven' Take
Is one that I see so often. Too often. The way many fans (still) say Aziraphale is so naïve, he's never learned anything, he never changes, Metatron just offered him a promotion and he happily jumped on it. Happy to go back to Heaven. Still in their clutches. Leaving Crowley behind. Cos nothing lasts forever. Amirite? Poor long-suffering Crowley. So patient. Goes through so much. Aww. Takes that say that because Crowley never told Aziraphale about the venom in Gabriel's "Shut your stupid mouth and die already", Aziraphale has no idea that Heaven is not the good guys, that he still believes they are on the side of truth and light.
Takes that claim Aziraphale wants Crowley to come to Heaven and be an angel again so they can be happy like in the good old times. Takes that basically say that Aziraphale is stupid. And blind. LISTEN Do you mean this Aziraphale:
Who knew before Crowley did that something is rotten in the state of Denmark, that things are wrong and one can get in a lot of trouble for a thing as minor as a suggestion to improve things. Is this the Aziraphale that would seriously suggest to Crowley, who he was immediately deeply anxious over, to go back to 'good old times'? What good old times? How is Heaven a place of light when:
A bunch of angels comes down to Earth to bully and PUNCH ONE OF THEIR OWN?
Why would he think they are the light when they shame him for being who he is?
Yes, I HC is that ultimately, Aziraphale still believes in God, in Her inherent goodness, even if Her tasks were often odd... and not lining up with what he thought was right. He thinks (remember my own HC) something somewhere went wrong with the what She wanted and the how it was understood and executed. And yes, Aziraphale wants to do good. But that's not tied to him being an angel. And it's not a bad thing ffs! Crowley does good as well. Aziraphale might be the only one who knows, but he knows. Maybe getting humans out of the Garden to seek knowledge was always a (certainty) possibility, and maybe not, but it was Aziraphale's decision to arm them.
And She didn't make him Fall for it. And do you remember when:
Aziraphale first openly questioned that Heaven was actually doing what God actually wanted? He had a think after the Flood, didn't he. He did what he thought was right. He trusted Crowley over his fellow angels, with his own sense of rightness. He and Crowley saved the kids that Aziraphale triple checked the Archangels saw no problem in letting die to make things easier. And She didn't make him Fall for it. In Edinburgh:
Az re-evaluated the thinking he was taught and did a full 180 degree turn, trying in few hours to save the grave-robbing girl AND the possible future lives of children that could be helped via more learning. And when we come to Metatron and his threats, we don't see the full conversation, but don't we see enough? Aziraphale says that he's not interested. Metatron keeps nagging at him. Pushing the symbolic coffee from Coffee or Death at him. Flattering him with obvious untruths. After all, Aziraphale knows what Heaven thinks of him. He tried to reason with Metatron before. Metatron tells him they know how deep his disobedience lies:
Aziraphale is not a fool. He knows this is an offer of come quietly or we will find a way to destroy you and your demon this time. Aziraphale didn't have to hear Metatron's quip of: "For one prince of Heaven to be cast into the outer darkness makes a good story. For it to happen twice, makes it look like there is some kind of institutional problem." He knows the system is rotten. He knows for a LONG time. Did you see his face when he met Muriel and realised what a lonely sad existence they lead.
AND Crowley doesn't love Aziraphale despite the fact that he's being used to get out of trouble, being made to listen about random things the angel enjoys from symphonies to food and plays, and who continues to believe in goodness and kindness. CROWLEY LOVES AZIRAPAHLE BECAUSE OF THOSE THINGS AND because he sees Aziraphale for what he is, an angel who thinks for himself, changes his mind, learns, angel who is brave, who stands for the right thing, who sacrifices his own happiness for the safety of others, especially the demon he loves. They are the same. They are lonely. They are one of a kind. And they love each other.
Aziraphale wants to stay at home. In the home he built for himself and Crowley. On Earth where he's found so much to love. But he knows it is impossible. As Crowley confesses his love, Aziraphale struggles to stay on his plan to push him away, to make him stay. He'll miss Crowley terribly. He wants them to be together. For him, they were an 'us' the whole S2. However tenuously. Fragile existence and all that.
But even this was ripped away from him. And whatever he's planning, he knows he needs to do the first steps on his own. He can't submit Crowley to the torture that being in Heaven is going to be for him, an unwanted, despised angel. And that would be even worse for an unwanted demon. He had to push him away.
So he leaves. Furious. And determined. Whether it is to burn the place down or find God and ask Her all the questions to Her face I don't know. But his love will push him through.
And if I see one more simplistic take of the snarky demon is really good isn't he, so that means the stuffy angel is bad (and needs to change to be worthy of the demon) I will curse their dreams with lines about shades of grey. AZIRAPHALE AND CROWLEY ALREADY LOVE EACH OTHER

Wait why do you not like Gabriel? Also thoughts on that scenario otherwise?
so the list of reasons i dislike gabriel is incredibly petty, almost entirely unrelated to the text of the show, and mostly about my experience of the fandom in 2013. i actually like gabriel in his role in the show (or at least, in the kripke era; his appearance in meta fiction when it could have been anyone else makes me pop a vein, and i don't care one way or the other about his late season reappearance, though i think it's immensely funny that it happened).
let's start:
the specter of sabriel hangs heavy over any mention of that horrid little man. and like, sabriel is funny now, like, enjoying it ironically is funny and i occasionally participated, but it was fucking ubiquitous back in the day and you have no idea how annoying it was. i hated it so much
the way people relate him to castiel is so fucking stupid it makes me chomp and bite and kill. like the fact that gabriel is the angel that people choose to deepen cas' relationship with, like, to make them family, is so fucking stupid. you could use any other angel. anna or uriel or balthazar or fucking rachel. michael! lucifer! and then as the show moves on like, dozens more. hannah or benjamin or akobel or anael or or or or or. i feel a similar way about him as i do about samandriel, though i have less vitriol towards' gabriel's canon portrayal
anything gabriel can do in your au, crowley or balthazar could do better. and 90% of your canon fics too
actually re: that last point, i feel like part of my resentment of gabriel as a character is because i'm a balthgirl and i'm resentful
also a crowleygirl
soooooo many fics where the plot is "gabriel did something to dean and cas to make them get together" and like that can be fun but like it sucks most of the time. 1) it's literally the laziest possible writing. "there's a super powerful guy and he shares my authorial narrative goals" fuck off. 2) shipper on deck is maybe my least favorite fanfiction trope ever ever ever i think all shipper on deck fics should be purged and expunged from the internet. if gabriel is fucking with them for his own reasons and it just so HAPPENS to get dean and cas together, that's fine. if them getting together is an intermediate step in a larger plan, that's fine. but gabriel just wanting them to get together is like fuckyoufuckyoufuckyoufuckyoufuckyou
sp8 directed 12x12 and 15x18 and for that i will someday push him into oncoming traffic
