The Wallace Line - the invisible barrier through the entire Malay Archipelago keeping two world apart.

" In between two of the islands of Indonesia, there's an ancient line that is both real and not real. You can't see it, but it's there all the same. If you stood on the coast of Bali and looked east to the shores of Lombok, you'd be staring right at the line's narrowest point: a 32 km stretch of water that seems pretty unassuming. This invisible barrier weaves its way through the entire Malay Archipelago, the largest collection of islands on the planet.

See, on the western side, the animal life is characteristic of Asia, featuring rhinos, elephants, tigers and woodpeckers, to name a few. But cross the line, and things suddenly change. You won't find those same species on the eastern side. Instead, the island have a totally different cast of ecological characters, including marsupials, Komodo dragons, cockatoons, and honeyeaters.

This is what scientists call a biogeographic boundry, the meeting point of two regions of biodiversity that are highly distinct. "

Religions In Indonesia

Indonesia is quite an interesting country! It is known for one of their islands; Bali, and their vast number of languages. Fun fact! Indonesia is the country with the most islands and probably the country with the most languages that belong to them. There are a lot of islands, a lot of cultures that reside with the islands in the country, like Javanese and Balinese. But there is one language that is used by everyone there is Bahasa Indonesia. Their capital is Jakarta which isn’t as known as Bali but is still the capital of Indonesia.

Another thing that Indonesia is known for is their religions! It’s actually not permitted to NOT have a religion and that you must pick a religion out of 6 religions: Hindu, Kong Fu Cu, Islam, Buddha, Christian, and Catholic. Afterall, Indonesia is a secular democratic country that has a Muslim-majority population. The Indonesian constitution guarantees all people in Indonesia the freedom of worship, each according to his or her own religion or belief. It also stipulates that the state shall be based upon the belief in "the one and only God" (a condition which also forms the first principle of the Pancasila, the Indonesian state philosophy introduced by Soekarno in 1945).

Indonesia is always open to thousands of things! But there are some things that aren’t allowed and aren’t legalized by its government. Not only that, but religions in Indonesia have conflict despite having a lot of religious freedom. And although some religions are fighting over doctrinal differences, most conflict stems from more secular causes- a desire for political power, a struggle for resources, ethnic rivalries, and economic competition.

Just like I said earlier, some religions are having conflict. Their reasoning for this conflict had caused a lot of problems in Indonesia.

Here’s a few of the conflicts that have been going on in Indonesia:

The conflict in the Malaccas, where, according to Indonesian Red Cross data, over 500,000 people have been displaced and over 4,000 people have died in Christian-Muslim combat over the previous two years. Even if it is undoubtedly the greatest of the problems we are currently experiencing, it would be inaccurate to attribute it to a long-standing religious disagreement. The underlying causes of it are actually numerous historical, political, and economic ones.

Although West Kalimantan is currently quiescent, hundreds of people were murdered in a new outbreak that occurred in 1999. Furthermore, there was a prior incident in 1997 that resulted in numerous fatalities and involved native Dayaks and some native Malays fighting the Madurese immigrant group. The topic of migrants against indigenous people is a recurring motif in conflicts within Indonesian communities.

There is a conflict going on in Poso in Sulawesi. Again the worst episode was this past spring when there were about 300 people killed. Again there was Christian-Muslim fighting but this conflict was based more on local elites struggling over power that ended up in communal conflict.

Community conflicts occasionally break out in Couchon Pandang in West and East Java, Kupang in West Timor, Lombok in Eastern Bali, and other places where the conditions are right. Of course, the ethnic Chinese are also a constant target whenever societal turmoil occurs.

Of course, there is a way to resolve all of these problems. It won’t be easy, neither will it be quick to resolve. But with time, it can be done. There are few solutions that I know of to overcome religious conflict and receive religious harmony:

Followers of different religions should exercise moderation and tolerance towards each other and their beliefs, and not instigate religious enmity or hatred.

Religion and politics should be kept separate.

Overall, we should learn how to  tolerate and respect other religions. Considering they are all in the same country, with Bhineka Tunggal Ika has their meaning for unity in all religions. I do hope for the best outcome of  any religious conflict in Indonesia. The people and its scenery is truly a beauty.

Scuba Diving Trips For Teens - A World Of New Adventures Awaits - The Road Less Traveled

Whether you are reading this because you are specifically seeking out a scuba adventure program for your teen, or it has never even crossed your mind to consider one, there are many reasons to choose a teen scuba and travel program with The Road Less Traveled (RLT). Let's take a look at just some of the benefits and outcomes for your teen.

Getting Certified - A globally recognized PADI scuba certification 

Teens don't need to have any previous scuba experience to join an RLT trip. As long as they are competent swimmers, comfortable in water, and enjoy snorkeling, they can join us and get fully certified as a PADI Open Water Diver as part of our trip. For students that have previous experience or SCUBA certifications, they can build on their skills and get the next level of certification to further enhance their scuba journey. 

Using SCUBA skills to help with Underwater Marine Service Projects

Teen scuba and travel programs with RLT also go one step further than just learning to dive. Once certified, students will work alongside marine biologists, scientists, conservationists and other experts in marine science to help with important service work to protect and enhance underwater ecosystems. Projects include restoring coral reefs in Florida and Bali,  tackling invasive species in Belize, or helping clear pollution and debris in Italy. All service hours are fully certified and will count towards school requirements and help with college admissions.

We have shared how teens will leave our programs with multiple scuba certifications and how they will get first hand experience and certified community service hours as well. But that’s not it! 

Our carefully devised trips are also unique as they also allow students to grow in themselves, develop community and friends, and have meaningful travel experiences all across the world. We have a range of RLT scuba diving trips that are available for booking for the summer of 2024, and places are filling quickly!

Here are a few examples of what we mean: 

The Italy: Dive The Med program gives young people a picturesque European backdrop on which to learn to scuba dive or build on their existing skills, discovering all manner of captivating marine life in the process. 

The Florida: Conservation Is Key program focuses strongly on marine conservation, and gives young travelers the chance to work alongside the Coral Restoration Foundation as they rebuild underwater coral nurseries in the Florida Keys. 

The Bali: Coral And Culture trip allows teen travelers the chance to explore part of Indonesia, while getting a PADI scuba certification or further honing their existing scuba diving skills. In addition they will assist with marine conservation service work aimed at restoring coral reef systems. 

The Belize: Beneath The Surface program offers 14 days spent in a jaw-dropping island location even by Caribbean standards, complete with jungles, rainforests, and the world’s second largest barrier reef.

WHY PERSECUTION AND MARTYRDOM?

Today we begin a two-part look at the testimony of a terrorist persecutor named Maulana who ultimately gave his life to Christ and became a Christian missionary:

I was born in a Muslim family in a small town of Demak, central Java, Indonesia. My family was very strict in following Islamic Sharia laws. As a Muslim, I read a lot of the Koran, Hadits, the sayings of the prophet Mohammed, and all the other books that help me be a devoted Muslim.

I started to learn about a famous international Muslim named Ayatollah Komeini from Iran. I welcome Ayatollah Khomeini’s ideas and his call to revolution to all Muslims because it will be very nice to have Islamic Sharia law applied in our society. That would arrange all ways of life in this country according to the truth of the Koran. I don’t like the West because their lifestyle has affected the Eastern lifestyle, young people dress like those in the West, which is so far from Islamic propriety. I hate that.

And this has also caused me to hate tourists who come to Indonesia. They bring Western lifestyle and can’t be a role model for us in Islam. I see Christians as hindering Sharia teaching in Indonesia. Indonesia must be cleansed from the cross. It’s a must! Sharia must happen in civil society. The Christians worship Jesus, who is merely a man. For us this is sin, and we must stop this movement through churches.

The Indonesian government is committed to freedom of religion, as stated in our national constitution. But for Muslims this is not good. It will not bring any good to the country’s future. Because we do not get support from the government, we take law into our own hands. We attack churches; we shoot pastors while they are preaching to cause fear. We do it because the government does not back us up, so we do it by ourselves. We do not fear death because we were encouraged by Ayatollah Ruholla Khomeini to spill our blood to the last drop to make this happen.

Remember the bombing in Bali? That was a combined expression of our frustration and our goal. Calling us terrorists is a big mistake, because we’re just Muslim God lovers. The government supports Eastern Indonesia and the islands to be Christian, and is actually hindering us from teaching or implementing Sharia law there. So we devised secret plans to bring about Sharia law in Eastern Indonesia. I was one of the first 5,000 soldiers sent from east Java on a ship to the island of Ambon. En route from Surabaya to Ambon, we hijacked the ship in Solo. We searched the ship and checked each passenger’s identity. Anyone with a Christian ID was either killed or thrown into the ocean. And together our group took over the ship and headed for Ambon Island to eliminate the church of Jesus Christ.

Tomorrow the change that comes to Maulana’s life when he meets Jesus.

It's been almost a month since Brett and I saw each other again and met up here in Bali. Since then, we have toured in some nice places in the island and even crossed over to Java island to Banyuwangi and the special region of Yogyakarta for a few days with Brett's newfound friends. We've been meeting mostly really kind people along the way and we're both glad to have taken on this travel journey together and experience what Indonesia's beauty and charm can offer. We also managed to do active volcano hikes both in Bali and East Java. Mount Batur in Bali and Mount Ijen volcano in Banyuwangi. They were the first mountains I ever hiked on and they were considered pretty casual. For me though, they were quite challenging and had to do it in my own pace. Even with waterfalls, we had to take some hikes here and there as well. So many has happened in a span of 28 days and we haven't even seen all of Bali and of what we wanted to see and experience in Indonesia but at least we got to visit places we've always wanted to visit. From temples to museums to beaches and forests and mountain views and all those foodshops, I can truly say we had an amazing time together in Indonesia. I am very thankful for all of it.

Travelling really helped us not only learn about new places and cultures but also learnes new things about each other. We learned that we both can't tolerate really, really spicy food and that we both tend to forget to rehydrate properly. Lol. We both have had less arguments as I've noticed and I cried less compared to last year. I say we have both been more patient with each other and it shows. The more patient we've become, the more we trust one another to be there for each other no matter what.

I love him even more with everything we went through. I say we make a great team but also, we underestimate or overestimate the stuff we can do during our travels. Haha

Nevertheless, we always manage to have some fun.

TANK You’ve described your sound as “post-alay”. Could you tell me a bit about that term?

Aditya Surya Tarun It’s speculative. Ican will explain better. Ican Harem It’s the way we present the absurdity of our urban culture, the clash between tradition and celebrating grassroots.

TANK You’ve also spoken about the roll-out of 4G and cheap smartphones in Indonesia was integral to the evolution of your sound. What kind of shifts did this enable? IH The way people got access to technology and uploaded everything they thought was interesting – it’s the way we celebrate democratisation. Technology and cheap smartphones are the tools. AST This country is massive, with more than 100,000 islands. It was hard to connect before through the same old channels – TV, government, all that stuff. Then suddenly that explosion shifted whatever stuff that me and Ican love: things like watching Jathilan (local trance dance in Java) or Rantak Kudo (traditional rave from south Sumatra) on smartphones, uploaded independently by real people who are doing it without curatorial bias, a filter or someone else claiming it. I never thought they would be so persistent! Mutating their tradition into something else, something really relevant – at least for me. It took me back to the 10-year-old me having fun, enjoying shadow puppets with my dad. That hit hard on me as a person stuck in the global music algorithm, making stuff for international shit and living in Bali, one of the most colonised scenes in Asia. That shift summoned my inner demon. I deleted all my previous music productions and started writing new ones with simple rules: using the Indonesian scales and tunings of pelog and slendro and doing what they’re doing, not giving a fuck.

TANK It seems like there’s a new wave of international cross-pollination in experimental music where Europe is no longer the epicentre. An act like yourself can release on a Shanghai-based label and play a festival in Uganda, and there’s dialogue and collaboration between all those different scenes and locations. Is this something you feel excited about? And has it influenced your approach to music at all? AST Of course! You know how beautiful it is to have conversations in broken English and dance with Chinese or Ugandan kids? It’s really primal. It’s amazing. To complement [each other] and be on a learning process [together] is weirdly fun. Also, to see how persistent each of them is to challenge and mutate what they have. Chinese and Taiwanese kids’ music is futuristically beautiful, and then there’s singeli From Tanzania, Ugandan acholitronic or budot from the Philippines… I can talk forever about how fascinating they are. IH It was almost a joke for us, and then [those connections] happened. To share this, a multi-disciplinary, multicultural, multi-lingual creative process was a massive goal, to find natural synchronisation.
