Komodo National Park, Indonesia — May 2024. Day Three. Woke to a gorgeous sunrise. They are feeding us like kings and queens on this boat with gorgeous food and snacks at every turn. For dinner tonight everyone wore their robes to dinner which was pretty funny.

Dive One: Crystal Rock was loaded with all kinds of fish all around us. Very relaxing. Loved the clown triggerfish.

Dive Two: Golden Passage great drift dive where we just rode the current and it was like watching a fish movie going by. Highlights were hanging out with a school of sturgeon; seeing a giant morey eel swimming and a turtle hanging out. For some reason the DM had us swimming against the current for the safety stop which seemed non-sensical.

Dive Three: Manta Point dive site delivered. Ten minutes into the drive a huge manta ray cruised overhead. Other highlights were a spotted Eagle Ray and two blue ring octopus. The blue ring octopus are cute and look like little baby octopus but they are no baby. It delivers the equivalent venom of five cobra and is considered one of the deadliest creatures on earth.

Dive Four: Night dive at Sibata Bay was very relaxing and the temperature was surprisingly warm. Highlights were a pair of lion fish, frog fish and a big trumpet fish.

Anniversary cruise

Some times it is just right to do something good for those you love and this adventure started out with that intent. Rhondda and I had planned to do Great Britain and Europe with our good friends Julie and Lindsay starting September through to November and in this period of time it was our 30th wedding anniversary so I thought be nice to take a cruise with her to Singapore in 2023. The cruise to Singapore was to be enjoyed with our other great friends Gaye and Creig, a surprise for Rhondda.

Rhondda had been away so when a cruise I liked became available I quickly purchased so I could surprise her during our trip in Europe. While away Rhondda had found an African tour including a cruise from Cape Town to Venice covering seven weeks which she had also planned for us to do. This we booked as I could not tell her about my present of the cruise to Singapore.

Nothing wrong here but that means we will visit or pass through Singapore five times within three months. Great place to visit and I recommend the chilli crab to everyone. My plan and the eventual travel all to be enjoyed until it was pointed out to me by Rhondda that it was in fact our 31st wedding anniversary, not our 30th. My bad.

That all said and done on the cruise we started from Brisbane where on booking into our cabin I was pleasantly surprised to receive a $300 casino chip in my welcome package. Rhondda received a $100 casino chip as well. Very nice.

We had travelled on this boat in very early September 2022 to celebrate Gaye’s birthday. This was a great experience and knowing the food was great and the drinks very cold settled into a very relaxed state of mind. As we sailed we did the usual things such as attending trivia, talent quests and other ship promotions.

Our first day at sea saw us also take up UNO a card game for children better enjoyed by adults. I must mention Gaye and Creig are very good at the game.

Our first point of call being Airlie Beach where Rhondda and I did a tour, visiting the local markets. Great tidy town but really just a tourist orientated town with no natural attractions other then a man made lagoon which was well attended. Back on board we spent the next three days as sea with attendance at the evening entertainment, supporting great food, drink and banter as we sat around chilling with a occasional card game.

Darwin our next port of call, very much changed since we were last there, also just driven by a tourist fetish with any worthwhile tour requiring a full day and lots of money. Given we were not in port that long a walk down the Main Street looking at other tourists on the other side was the major event.

Back on the boat we were advised we would not be going to Komodo Island with Bali Island (not to be confused as the Bali Aussies love to holiday at) our port of call. Very disappointing and even more so when you realised just how far away any real tourist attraction was. We hired a taxi for the day and visited places he recommended around Denparsar finally electing to simply get a full body massage. Great massage.

Again out to sea we then dropped into Lombok (replacing Komodo Island) with the port even further away from the locals. Again we hired a taxi for the day which took us around proudly showing off his community. Plenty of rice fields and the visit to the community that had established a woman’s group creating its own products was great to see. The crowning attraction was the Meru Temple which a walk through was a must. Some power shopping and back on the boat. Coming across a couple of dozen monkeys on the ride home was exciting, especially for the monkeys as the driver tried to feed them his bananas, lunch I think.

Another two days at sea and we hit Singapore, which is a beautiful city. The tidiest place on earth, where chewing gum is banned and a crime may result in a caning. Pretty good deterrent given we saw no litter nor crime. Tried to do as the locals do so off by train to “little India” and “China Town” for some shopping and food tasting. Great experience.

Also we were fortunate to visit a local restaurant named “Grub” which had a Chilli Crab pasta dish to die for. Went back for seconds on our last night.

Singapore has become very expensive, reflected in the price of a glass of beer ($12 Aussie) so one tends to stay sober. Haha the food and people are wonderful but five times within three months is excessive so we will find another pathway to Europe and the USA in 2024. The cruise was good but really lacked substance in creating a tourist feel. If all you want to do is lie around then this is the cruise to do.
