Common Kusimanse
Crossarchus obscurus
Genus crossarchus, subfamily mungotinae, family herpestidae, suborder feliformia
These guys kinda look like coatimundis to me, but coatis are Procyonids. Caniforms, and these guys are feliforms. So definitely not related.
They look like they’d be nocturnal to me, but they’re actually diurnal.
They live in hierarchical family groups of ten to twenty individuals.
They don’t have permanent den sites, so if they have young with them, members of the group will take turns carrying them to foraging spots
They are found in Ghana, Ivory Coast, Benin, Liberia, and Sierra Leone in forested areas near water. Very different from most mongooses who live in open grasslands and semi arid brush.
BRO! UHG. bbbnnnnnbnbbbbbnnnnnnnnnnnnnbbnnn hehihiji theyre. Holdable.
I’m taking him to target to buy him a beyblade of his choice. And then we’re getting Denny’s for dinner at 9.
Very strong nephew energy.

This week I reached 51 unique species in my personal collection. Number 50 is a flat-headed kusimanse (Crossarchus platycephalus), a species of mongoose endemic to West Africa. Number 51 is a Mongolian gerbil (Meriones unguiculatus), a small species of rodent native to China, Mongolia, and Russia that’s common in the pet trade.
I’ll take a picture of all my skulls together at some point in the near future, I’m excited to see how they all look in the same photo.

Comparison between a Flat-headed kusimanse (Crossarchus platycephalus) and a African oyan (Poiana richardsonii), showing the differences between h.erpestid and v.iverrid skulls. H.erpestids have well-developed post-orbital bars and their bullae are more inflated than the v.iverrid’s. The v.iverrid’s snout is also much more delicate.
