Snippet- Be Better Than Me

           Rick arched an eyebrow as Pink turned slightly; her eyes meeting the confusion and curiosity in his as she smirked. The doors opened slowly, creaking as they were forced open by two other mirages of human flesh, complete down to the male anatomy and overkilled muscles. Rick clenched his fists, gritting his teeth as the light flickered, the men entering the room, dragging another being harshly.

           Pink chuckled slightly, and Rick lunged forward, the chains restraining his movements as he realized the third figure was Morty. His feet dragging slightly on the cement as the teenager struggled to gain any type of consciousness or strength in order to stand against the two men holding him up. His face bruised and bleeding, a cut tearing through his upper and bottom lip, across the bridge of his nose as blood still fell on his dirty yellow shirt.

           The 17-year-old lifted his head slightly, his pale blue eyes meeting Rick’s momentarily as he tried to find his footing on legs that refused to stand. He whimpered lightly, realizing his lanky body wasn’t willing to cooperate. His vision wavering harshly as he tried to focus on the dimly lit room, on the flames dancing off the walls, on the wet feeling pained in his left side, or the dizzying fog invading his mind.

           Rick growled as the men let Morty go, throwing him forward as the teenager collapsed against the cold ground, his face smacking loudly against the floor. Pink laughed as she dug a hand through his grandson’s hair, yanking his face from the floor so his eyes once again met Rick’s; pain, trust… disappointment surrounding his pupils before the 17-year-old groaned slightly.

“YOU BITCH!” Rick yelled, lunging forward again and gritting his teeth once more as the metal clasped around his wrists ate at the flesh. Pink snorted, letting the teenager’s hair go as he smacked once more against the cement. She turned, smirking, “Ah ah ahh, now. Is that really any way to talk to a lady? It seems as though your pet had better manners than you.”

           Rick let out a breath, his eyes fixed on her. Anger rising in his chest as he connected with the unmoving form of his grandson. Blood was beginning to stain against the floor, spreading from a wound on his side as the teenager failed to move, failed to show any indication that he was still hanging onto consciousness. Rick cleared his throat, “Morty! M-Morty, listen, I’m goin-going to get us out of here! I’ll fix this!”

           Pink laughed again, her voice echoing around the room as it bounced from the darkest corners in the chamber. She met Rick’s eyes, a grin forming on her face as she slammed her foot against one of the teenager’s hands. Morty screamed loudly. The cries emanating, covering any other sound in the room, and Rick flinched. He swallowed, tears pricking his eyes, and Rick grit his teeth as the teenager screamed again, pulling his hand closer to himself as Pink raised an eyebrow. The sound of bones breaking under force echoing in Rick’s ears as the teenager drew in a strained breath.

Rick took a slow breath as he calmed himself, “I’m going to-to fucking kill you!”

Pink shook her head, amusement masking her features as she took a step towards Rick; her arms crossed, “Oh really? You and what Army? See, I know you, Rick Sanchez. I know everything there is to know about all the other Ricks. After all, you’re not the first Rick or Morty to come stumbling into my territory… But… I must say… you smell much different than the others before you…”

           She took a deep breath causing the older man to grimace slightly, “Thanks. It’s the lack of bathing and alcoholism.”

           “Hm. All that wit. Hiding the enemy lurking in the shadows- the true Rick Sanchez. Such a pity, such a disappointment society must be to you as you are to it. Tell me, Rick, do you know what I am?” Pink asked, stepping around Morty. She took a few steps forward, wiping her hand over the dust, grime and blood covering the walls; letting the black dirt fall from her hand slowly.

Rick moved a hand, the chains once again jingling, “Really ugly?”

Pink smirked, her fingers once again meshing against the disgusting wall, “My kind, although few thanks to intergalactic terrorism, has the ability to see into one’s mind. To read into their deepest darkest parts of themselves. To learn the things hidden away, buried so deep, locked so tightly in the worst part of a being’s soul.”

“Sounds fun. I can-can accom-omplish the same thing with a few barrier reactors, a screwdriver, and a bicycle- a bicycle helmet,” Rick stared blankly, looking at his left hand as he tried squirming it from the chains gripped around his wrist. The metal digging harshly, blood lining his arm as the chain gave slightly. Pink snorted, moving closer, “You doubt my ability, then?”

“Oh boy, here we go,” Rick rolled his eyes, huffing, “The only thing I doubt, is that you do birthday parties on the weekends in order to maintain a rather clownish and some-somewhat de-demeaning flesh of a-of a wo-woman.”  

           Silence occupied the room, and Rick paused for a moment; his wrist throbbing as blood coated the chains, making it slippery, making it relatively easier to yank his hand free. Either that or dislocate it in order to try and figure a way out of here. He shivered slightly, freezing for a moment as stillness blanketed the room, and Morty groaned, moving slightly.

           Fingers smacked against Rick’s face, pressing his chin and cheeks violently together as the hand pried his eyes away from his grandson. Fingernails digging into his face as Rick’s eyes connected with Pink’s, a crazed grin plastered against skin pulled too tightly across her face; her eyes lifeless and cold, sparkling with what Rick could only assume was the real alien harboring the pound of flesh like a puppet.

           “You doubt me, then?” She growled, her teeth chipped and rotting as she smiled. Nails digging harder into his flesh, spit splattering against his face, and Rick grit his teeth as pain rose from his neck, exploding through his head as his vision faded, as the world faded and the pain etched into his skin from sharp red nails, dug deep enough to rip the flesh from his bones…

           “Rick, I’ll say it for the last time! This is my house! And you will not plan a rebellion for the space war or whatever in my house!” Jerry yelled, walking down the stairs. He tripped slightly, missing the last two steps and stumbled into the wall with a soft thud. Rick watched amused as the younger man quickly tried to straighten himself; a wavering stern look washed across his face as he once again tried to show a dominance that they both knew wasn’t there. The older man rolled his eyes and turned back towards his project as Jerry repeated the statement.  

Rick groaned loudly, “Jesus, Jerry. It’s the Dark Intergalactic Cause. You sound like a fucking moron when you say space an-and war. Look, if you can’t remember, call them the DIC Group.”

           Jerry growled slightly, mumbling something under his breath as Beth handed her father a screwdriver. She smiled towards Jerry then her dad, “Well, I think it sounds like fun. Maybe you should lighten up, Jerry.”

           Rick snorted, flipping a screw across the table as he turned towards the younger man, crossing his arms, “Y-yeah, maybe you should-should lighten up, Jer-ry…

             Pain slicing through his left shoulder as Rick slammed his head against the boulder behind him. Screams heard from the dust clouding the atmosphere, and someone screamed his name as bullets and blasts flew through the air. Rick swallowed, gripping his shoulder, looking momentarily at the blood gushing from the stupid wound, before pushing himself away from the rock; his gun gripped hard in his right hand.

           Bird-Person flew above him, dropping an atom bomb in the distance, the explosion sending a horrific gush of copper filled air across the crumbling planet. Rick coughed harshly, stumbling as he grabbed at the portal gun hidden in his lab coat; waiting to use it; waiting for…

             “Daddy!”

           Rick turned, dropping his coat on the floor as Beth ran to greet him. Her blonde pigtails jumping wildly as she ran across the hall, and Rick bent down, a huge smile radiating from his face. The 5-year-old threw herself at her father, laughing loudly as he swung her around gently.

           She pressed her little hands against his face, smiling widely; her two front teeth missing from the other night. A small Power-Rangers Band-Aid plastered against her left cheek from playing outside. She dug her hands in her pockets quickly, pulling out another Band-Aid, placing it on Rick’s forehead as he carried her into the kitchen.

           Rick threw a confused look towards his wife before Beth pressed her hands against his face once more, “I missed you, Daddy! We’re playing Doctor! Wanna play with us…

             Blood. There was so much fucking blood. Coating his body in a shield as the lifeless body of his grandson laid a few feet away, his eyes fixed on Rick in a dull stare of a dead reminder. God, there was so much fucking blood.

           Rick gagged harshly, throwing his body to the left as he vomited. Blood soaked hands wiping at his mouth as he shakily reached a hand towards Morty. There was so much fucking blood…

             “Stop,” Rick mumbled weakly as his vision cleared and the pain evaded, nails releasing his face and the older man closed his eyes, glancing down at the floor. He swallowed loudly as Pink stepped away, chuckling softly, “Family. Really, Rick? Oh, honey. But you are nothing more than a poison injected in the blood of those you love. A drug. A fatal toxicity promising adventure. Tell me, are you even the real Rick Sanchez? Or did he die years ago?”

           Rick swallowed again, breathing through his nose several times as the memories began to fade from his mind. As the hurt began to fade further in the background, and he cleared his throat as he looked up slowly, “Don’t flatter yourself. You know there isn’t such a thing as a real Rick Sanchez.”

           Pink faltered, turning halfway back to face him, “Such a lie you’ve wrapped yourself in. All hidden by an old white little lab coat…”

“Sorry, next time I’ll be s-sure to wear a fucking tux-tuxedo,” Rick interjected, wincing quietly as he struggled again to pull his left wrist from his imprisonment. He felt the skin pull, sliding somewhat from the thick metal.  

“What a simple mind. Filled with so much greatness. So much trust… love for his family. For you. Does he even know the truth? The truth about everything? About you? Does he even know who you are?” Pink stated. Rick felt a shiver run down his spine as he glanced back up, glaring towards the woman standing over his grandson’s limp form.

           The older man growled, “Don’t you fucking touch him!”

           Silence again. Embracing the dark room in a constant reminder of things and opportunities missed. And Rick felt his heartbeat quicken as he held Pink’s gaze; refusing to look away; refusing to break the threat he held against her. She snorted slightly before turning back towards the teenager, her hand gently tracing a cut on his lip like a mother soothing her child, “Why? What are you going to do about it? All chained and beaten? Besides… I think you’ve done more damage to him than I ever could in an eternity.”

           The older man’s expression faltered, and he swallowed, hard. His eyes dancing over the stilled emotion on his grandson’s face; guilt sitting heavily in his stomach, and Rick fought the urge to gag as nausea coursed through his body, pulling his hand harder against the chains.

           She was right. Rick knew she was right. Morty had been a kid- hell, he was still a kid. Only 17. Something Rick always seemed to forget. And whether he liked it or not, the kid was his grandson… whatever the hell that meant. He was his blood. Vulnerable. Susceptible. Following blindly as Rick drug him through realities, horrors, nightmares that could kill him- that had killed him. And yet, he trusted Rick with an unending love that he would never receive in return. He trusted Rick because Morty believed so fiercely that his life was nothing compared to a single smidge of his grandfather. And Rick knew- he knew the thoughts that haunted the kid every time, every silence parted between the teenager’s lips, every moment of unfocused emotion fixed on nothingness, the tears heard through paper-thin walls and red stains left unwashed in the bathroom sink- Rick knew. He’d seen the scars. The dark lines tanned against his grandson’s arms- the emotion hidden so damn deep behind a disguise of stupidity, bravery and that goddamn determination to prove himself enough. Rick fucking knew. And he never said anything… he couldn’t.

Morty had grown from the weird kid he’d once been. Fuck, he was still weird and awkward, but he was colder, harder, quieter, and he stopped worrying about everything somewhere along the way. He was devoid of things that phased other kids his age; still concerned with a girl out of his league, but no longer chasing after her like a lovestruck puppy. He’d matured into his own thought, towering over the young and pathetic memories of his youth. He reserved himself to isolation and solitude, creating a demeanor who would rather convey his emotions to himself in peace, and letting the world show their opinions of him. Letting society decide how they viewed him rather than fight against it. Because everything was bullshit, and nothing really mattered. A philosophy he had adopted from Rick, and one he lived by… one he’d die by.    

           Rick grimaced as he yanked his left hand free, busying himself as he tried freeing his other hand; trying to remember if he had any gadgets that could help him.  

“Tell me, Rick,” Pink said softly, still caressing the teenager’s face gently, “Has he even seen the real Rick Sanchez crawling beneath your skin? Such rage. Such destruction. So much blood on your hands that not even the purest Rick or Morty could absolve you of yourself. Has he seen what you’re truly capable of?”

Rick paused, and glanced down at the floor, pressing his lips together as the question reached him. He heard shifting and looked up slowly to see Pink turning towards him, and he slammed his hand back to the chains on his left. He opened his mouth to speak but she cut him off, “A pity, really. What pain it must cause you to look at him. To lock away everything in your past that is their future. How it must feel to hide yourself away from everyone because you’re so afraid they’ll see you for what you really are.”

Rick belched loudly, “A badass fucking sc-scientist?”

“A monster. An evil greater than anything lurking in the depths of the universes, greater than anything hiding among the other realities.”

The older man bit the bottom of his lip. His eyes grasping between Pink then his grandson then Pink.

All of the infinite universes, the infinite families and Ricks, the infinite realities he’d lived… hell, even he’d lost track of the reality he was born into. The reality he’d lost everything. The reality he’d destroyed… the reality he’d destroyed everything… burned, incinerated, broken into so many fucking pieces that not even he could put back together again. The reality he’d fucked so hard he couldn’t fix… the reality that’d seen him; truly seen him, seen his anger, seen his rage, what he could do, what he was capable of. Because he’d lost… himself, everything. The infinite universes all boiling down to that tiny fucking and insignificant reality that he’d destroyed himself; creating the shitshow of everything he was fighting for today. The reality he had killed himself, killed what it meant to be human.

           Humanity. Humans. Weak and small. Pathetic and unimportant. The human race was weak and puny compared to the adventures lurking in the skies that he chased so desperately in the voids. Humans were weak. Sloppy. So many fucking emotions all wrapped in a wimpy fleshy suit of goopy matter. They were so easily replaced. Easily forgotten…

Despite everything, despite the Citadel, despite the vast realities and universes, Rick never had the fucking heart to tell Morty the truth… to tell him what really happened; he never had the heart to tell him about the one true Rick and Morty. About Beth. About everything he’d fucked up beyond repair; about the mess he’d created… and the inevitable end that hung over Rick as he haloed countless deaths, tragic and bitter, all his fault… including Morty’s own. Morty’s death… his end; that was something Rick couldn’t bring himself to face, but he couldn’t forget it either. Because it hadn’t happened yet, but Rick had already lived it.  

Rick sighed, “…it’s better this way. It’s better he doesn’t know.”

“Why? You think it’ll protect him? How stupid you must be. You really don’t see it, do you?” Pink stepped closer, confusion etched into the tighter corners of her features; her flesh beginning to droop slightly as her form was starting to lose shape. She ran a hand over her face, fixing the wrinkles sagging under her eyes and mouth. She took another breath, stepping forward again, “You can’t see how much you’ve destroyed him. His mind, his thoughts, his emotions. How much hurt you’ve painted on his body; the nightmares and horrors you’ve created in the darkest parts of his mind; a darkness you’ve crafted out of the safe reality he knew, and the twisted pain and hatred you’ve fashioned out of what should have been happiness, love, and joy. Such innocence he once possessed. And yet, you fail to realize that the more you try to protect him, the more you try to save him, the more you destroy him. You fail to realize you’ve killed him… and you’re slowly killing anything that’s left.”

           “I’m going to kill you,” Rick grit his teeth, “When I get out of here, I’m-I’m going to rip that stupid flesh from you-your bones, you moronic fucking slug.”

           Pink smirked as she turned slightly, “Oh, I don’t doubt that as I know who you really are. But first, I’m going to have some fun with your pet. Don’t look so worried, Rick, I’ll make sure he dies quickly.”

           She turned back towards Morty; her skin crawling and shifting as she shed bones and flesh; as she shed humanity, crafting her own form as acidic saliva dripped from her mouth. Rick pulled his left hand free, yanking harshly at his right as he heard bones crack, blood pooling from the pressure on raw busted skin.

           A laugh echoed around the room as the lights darkened; the fire dying quickly, and Rick pulled harder, winching as his right hand came free, and he fell forward; his wrist connecting with the cement, breaking fully as the dislocated bone jolted upright. He cursed loudly, pulling himself up as he struggled for the chains wrapped around his ankles, and Pink screamed.

            A blast lit the room quickly before disappearing, and Rick froze; his fingers trembling against the cold metal still wrapped against his right ankle, and he glanced up. Darkness covered the room, followed by an eerie silence that sent chills across the room. Something fell against the ground as something much larger smack against the walls, vibrating the chains hanging through the small chamber and crashing through a softer part of the wall, filling the room with dust.

           Rick coughed loudly as light filtered weakly through the dungeon, and he squinted as his eyes met the pink glob of the slug monster. He scanned the rest of the room, dust hanging thickly in the air. Rick’s fingers still pressed against the metal chains as he swallowed softly, “M-Morty?”

           Something clattered across the room sliding from the dust covered air, stopping at Rick’s feet as retching echoed off the remaining walls. The older man glanced down at the small gun sitting at his feet, the tiny purple blaster was barely anything Rick would consider harmful; but aimed correctly, fired correctly, the small fucker would be able to fire enough to kill something. Rick’s eyes locked onto the blood smeared across the handle as retching once again filled the room, and he looked up again, scanning what little he could see.

           “Mo-Morty? Where the fuck are you, you dipshit?” Rick yelled, pressing his hands once again against the metal. His fingernails pulling backwards and ripping as he struggled to pry the chains apart. The rough metal sliced through more flesh on his fingers, and Rick cursed as blood began to drip down his hands.

           Something moved, and Rick flinched as warm hands covered his, pushing his shaking hands away from the metal. Rick sucked in a steady breath as he traced over the busted knuckles and dried blood scabbed on the abused flesh; huge black and green bruises covering the left hand from where Pink’s foot broke bones; bitten back winces still audible as fingers were forced to grasp rough metal; and Rick looked up, letting out another long silent breath.

           Morty’s face was covered in blood which Rick hoped was mostly from Pink. Blood trailing from the cuts on his face as his eyes, slightly unfocused, concentrated on the stupid metal. Dirt covered the teenager’s neck and shirt as holes tore through the old material. Bruises painted against dirty flesh, dotted with droplets of blood, and a bloody red mess gathering on the 17-year-old’s left side that looked more than painful.

           Metal clattered to the ground as Rick’s eyes continued to trace over the damage. He rubbed his own wrist as it throbbed slightly, and Morty met his gaze. Unfocused blue eyes, lifeless and dull, pain hanging in the corners behind fake morality. Morty used to have Beth’s eyes; her bright blue eyes shining with so much wonder and life… but now, now, Rick feared the kid mirrored his own reflection more than anything else. You fail to realize you’ve killed him…

           Morty swallowed slightly, choking on the dust surrounding them and blood ran down his chin slowly as he wiped it with his shoulder. He smiled faintly, “You oka-okay, Rick?”

           Rick nodded lightly before finding his voice, “Wow. Those fu-fuckers really did a number on you, huh, kid?”

           Morty’s eyebrows drew together as he wiped more blood from his chin. He sighed loudly, bending down to grasp the stupid purple blaster between shaky fingers. He swallowed again, “I-I’ll be fine. Let’s just go. I just want to go home.”

           His voice was barely audible. Quiet and meek. Making Rick’s skin crawl as he hung onto every syllable. His mind racing as he wondered how Morty’s last few days differed from his own. The torture, the questions, the dimly lit dungeon…

           Morty swallowed again, wincing as he turned, grasping the blaster in his hand as he walked towards the door. He grit his teeth as he forced his body to straighten, the wound on his right thigh busting open again and the slick feeling of blood trailing down his leg, meshing against socks that were no longer soft nor white. The last few days, weeks, fuck- months, had been hell. The time spent with Rick, the time at school, with people Morty thought were his friends, and the shitty idea of something bigger in the universes that deserved Morty as he was, all plagued from the twisted crappy mind of a youthful and Disney-inspired child that he had tried to kill.

           The plan wasn’t supposed to go this way, that was for damn sure; but, considering Morty hadn’t had much of a plan when Rick convinced him to steal some Draxonen crystals, and the teenager’s own brilliant idea of stealing some weird looking weapon, Morty wasn’t really surprised it went the way it went. Besides, the pain plaguing his ribs, thigh, shit- the majority of his body, felt nice. It made him feel… alive. Something he hadn’t felt since his fight with Jessica’s boyfriend because he found out that her and Morty had slept together… several times in fact.

           Needless to say, the plan was screwed to begin with. And Rick’s stupid crystals he’d probably inhale the moment they were home, stabbed through the 17-year-old’s pocket, piercing the wound further on his thigh. Morty swallowed, resisting the urge to puke again as the stale taste of blood filled his mouth; the stupid cut on his lip refusing to stop bleeding.

           Rick cleared his throat, and Morty glanced behind him briefly to see the old man watching him. The idea that part of their situation was due to Rick pissed the teenager off… the other part was hidden in his jacket pocket; the small weapon pulsing, and Morty grasped his hand around the object, biting the inside of his cheek as spikes pierced through the globe, eating away at the flesh on his palm.

Rick didn’t give a shit about him. Something the guards had made damn clear even though it’d been obvious for a long time now. And despite his grandfather telling Morty how little he meant to him, the 17-year-old had always managed to pull himself up, to convince himself that somewhere, somehow, deep down, there was something, something riding in his grandfather that cared for the teenager. But that was just childish bullshit. Because Rick didn’t care about anyone except himself.

Morty should have known, and honestly, he should have cared. But he didn’t. It’d been a long time since he cared about something or someone. Jessica had fucked around with him for practice, and Morty had been okay with that because he was sleeping with his middle school crush; his parents calling it quits every few weeks when all the teenager wanted to do was scream for them to separate, to get divorced because he couldn’t take their arguing anymore; and Summer- Summer was moving out next Fall to attend some university a few states over. And Morty… Morty wasn’t really sure there was a point anymore.

The 17-year-old pressed his shoulder against the wooden door as he glanced again towards Rick. The older man’s eyes still transfixed on him, but a small gadget willed between his fingers. Morty rolled his eyes as he inched the door apart to see the hallway better. Black shadows danced across the dusty brick, voices in languages the teenager didn’t recognize several feet away, and the sound of an alarm blaring in the distance...

Team Titans is an anagram of Fuck Donald Trump.

The joke in the caption relies on regular readers knowing that I keep doing anagrams of the title except this time the anagram isn't an anagram at all! I know some people probably didn't even have to double check, especially the really observant ones who instinctively knew that "Team Titans" did not contain an "F". But the other point of that caption is to make readers who both enjoy Donald Trump and the stupid shit I write about comic books suddenly realize that they don't like what I write at all. In half a second, they'll realize how stupidly wrong they were about their opinions of this blog. In a half second after that, they'll admit that they've always thought I was a dumb asshole who has never written anything clever in his entire life. A few seconds after that, they'll probably be jerking off to another Hillary Clinton rant by Sean Hannity. We all have to face the consequences of our beliefs and actions. One of the consequences of supporting the modern GOP lampreys attached to the tits and ass fat of Donald Trump is that you don't get to enjoy myriad entertainments. Pretty much all you've got is Last Man Standing and reruns of Home Improvement. Of course, you could try to ignore what you've now learned because I probably won't mention it again for quite some time. Is it weird that I have an unrepentant love for Lobo and a slightly repentant love for Deathstork but I feel like I'd be crossing a line having any kind of love for Deathwing? I get why people love Lobo because he's over the top and his space jeans craft a nice package in his nether area. Plus the chains! So penis stiffening! And Deathstork was cool enough to have gotten an underage girl he fucked killed without the entire comic book community feeling disgusted by him. I think his old age helped. Deathstork is like a beloved grandfather who tells such incredible stories from his youth that nobody minds that 23% of them are racist. But if somebody told me Deathwing was their favorite character, I'd be frightened. Although I guess they could mitigate that fright by explaining they like the Rebirth Deathwing and then I'd just be, "Oh, sorry. I didn't know you were gay. Cool!" That probably came across as me using gay as a synonym for lame but it was meant to express my feelings that Rebirth Deathwing should be a gay icon, if he isn't already. Like the Babadook. In that picture above, Deathwing is coming out of a clockmaker's closet (so maybe he's a gay icon too?), probably to rape the clockmaker (Oh yeah! He's totally rapey, so probably not a gay icon!). Now I'm wondering why Superman doesn't stop more rapes? Or why he doesn't commit himself to stopping all rapes? He could end rape forever with his powers! Meanwhile back at the Long Ranch, Nightrider (as opposed to Deathrider, his rapey twin), recovers from being shot by the neighbor. Granted, the neighbor also tracked down the wounded vampire to rescue him. He didn't realize he was shooting a living, feeling creature. He just thought he was killing a stupid bat! I hope no bats read this blog! They might think I'm being insensitive to bats! And, I mean, I am! But I don't want them to know that! They might start sending me memes of their creepy little faces saying things like, "Bats have rights too!" and "Bats cry more than most human males!" and "Today is the worst day of the rest of your terrible life, motherfucker!" I just watched a Kids React video on YouTube about whether or not "hell" was a curse word. Sydney took the opportunity to say as many near curse words as she thought she could get away with. I'm pretty sure if I were young or hip or with it (which I obviously am not as noted by my usage of "hip" and "with it"), I would now use the word stan somehow. Why is there a Kids React for "How to Cure a Hangover"? What the fuck is wrong with the Fine Brothers?! Okay, back to Team Titans! The neighbor tries to apologize by explaining that he wouldn't have tried to murder the bat if he'd known it wasn't a disgusting bat. Terry Long, the worst character in a comic book full of terrible characters (and I'm including Deathwing here!), blames the victim and Terra's angst meter tops out. She goes into a blind Tumblr rage without any regard to the neighbor's apology, explaining how Nightrider was only acting on his true nature. The row disturbs Donna's baby which becomes the worst issue of the night.

"Whith"? I've never noticed Donna's weird accent before this issue! I also love how she thrusts her baby at the others to show that they've upset it.

While the majority of the team take Nightrider to STAR Labs for treatment (can't they just let him suck the baby a little bit?), Mirage and Terra stay behind to protect Terry and the baby. Well, Terra stays behind to protect them. Mirage still suffers from the trauma of being raped while none of the others seem to give a shit. She's decided to run away and have her baby somewhere else. Hopefully she won't have the baby in the town where Deathwing grew up because you know what that would mean, right?! Ugh, I can't even type it! Mirage was raped by her own time traveling son! Okay, it wasn't that hard to type after all.

Out in the yard, four elementals are approaching to kill Terra: an elemental of glaciers, an elemental of shit, an elemental of men's farts, and an elemental of lady's farts.

Over at STAR Labs, Doctor Velcro determines Nightrider's life can't be saved because he's already dead. He's a vampire! And Doctor Velcro knows because he's a not just a vampire specialist but a vampire himself! He's one of the Creature Commandos! His prescription to keep Nightrider alive is human blood. At this declaration, the rest of the Team Titans begin acting like Nightrider is a goner. So their first thought is that he's going to die if he doesn't drink human blood? Not one of them is all, "Drink from my veins, buddy! As much as you need! Well, maybe not too much! You know, just a taste! But there are like eight of us, so you can probably get your fill by sampling us all!" Fucking jerks.

As Terra protects New York as a Team Titan by defending herself against elementals that want to kill her, the rest of the Team Titans defend New York by battling a bunch of electric beings in thongs that want to kidnap Killowat. I laugh in your face, Councilwoman Alderman! Look at all the good these Titans are doing for the city! The energy beings easily kidnap Killowat because he only had the majority of the Team Titans and Battalion defending him. Terra, all alone, just barely manages not to die in her battle right before a newly human Prester Jon (back from the Terminus Agenda!) manages to save her.

The person who kidnapped Killowat turns out to be the clockmaker's old beau, the one that taught her to work on futuristic Titans' communicators. He was a member of the Team Titans named Lazarium but he seems to have been a spy working for Lord Chaos. The leader of the Team Titans (identity still unknown!) sent him and his team back in time to die. But he survived and now he owns a good chunk of the media world. His name might as well be Rupert Murdoch because he has a media empire that's trying to turn the world against heroes and he has his own sexual harassment problems in his organization, seeing as how Deathwing works for him. Team Titans #17 Rating: It took seventeen issues but I'm finally interested in this comic book! The Lazarium story arc has momentum and ties in to the overall history of the team, hopefully finally separating them from the Titans book for a bit. I know it still relies on garbage time travel theories but it also threatens to expose Killowat as a huge racist piece of shit! That should be exciting! It's also slightly heavy on implied rape which I didn't mean to add as one of the reasons I'm enjoying the book but just as a simple fact to say, "Look. This was a comic book from 1994! Rape was an important plot point to raise tension and pull on the emotional heartstrings of an audience that didn't quite understand how writers were just using rape as a lazy way of creating drama and emotional tenstion!" What I'm trying to say is: B+! Good work, everybody!

This story would work even if it weren’t gay, Frankie could be whoever. They could even just be friends but where else will I get my subverted bury-your-gays trope? I’ll have to read books and I haven’t Read in ages, I don’t have brain cells.

Anna-Marie Mirage is an actress, but more like modern day Marilyn Monroe than Audrey Hepburn. She's not respected enough. 

She’s dating an actor named Dean. He’s a Clint Eastwood/James Dean/Humphrey Bogart type, he plays the Cool Hero Guy in movies. He’s been in mobster films, sci fi movies, westerns, etc.

He’s kind of an asshole. Anna-Marie thinks he’s cheating on her. 

The second act consists of Anna-Marie and Dean’s fights, and then her meeting Frankie.

Frankie is someone who is also in the industry, maybe not an actress, but maybe someone industry adjacent. Frankie and Anna-Marie get together. Maybe Anna-Marie asks for help from Frankie to find out info about the people Dean is cheating on her with.

The parallel stories mirror the occurring events, but they take place in universes from Dean's movies, so a western setting, in the mafia, and in space, but the story gets subverted so Dean, who would be the 'hero' in those stories typically, 'loses'.

The mafia one, Anna-Marie ends up hiring a hit on Dean and Frankie is the mercenary.

The sci-fi one, Dean dies by his own stupidity.

The western one, I think maybe Anna-Marie poisons him. 

Anna-Marie still steps in and solves whatever conflict the hero was meant to solve.

In the main story, Anna-Marie stays with Frankie behind Dean’s back, more empowered in herself and then the ending could be left ambiguous-ish? Or Anna-Marie dumps his ass and roasts the fuck out of him with all the info Frankie helped her get on his cheating ass as she leaves.

As far as careers went, being a Hollywood actress comes with it’s fair share of pros and cons. Nevertheless, Anna-Marie couldn’t complain. Not publicly, anyway. It was all she could do to keep a smile on her face while her (male) costars shook hands and won awards for performances that were (worth less than?) half of what she could have done in those roles.

Even privately, though, she felt entitled for the resentment she held for the industry she chose to work in. She had been in films and worked with incredible people, people she respected. For all intents and purposes, she had “made it”. But the artist in her longed for actual roles. Not for lack of trying, but every character she had played was never the lead, it never her story. It wasn’t bitterness or the want for the spotlight, though, that drove her mad, she had no qualms about playing a secondary character. It was the lack of depth. Her characters' involvement in the story was almost always inconsequential, superficial. She was the sexy lamp. And it infuriated her.

There wasn’t any way not to sound cocky about it, but Anna-Marie knew she was a good actress. She was sure of her skill, but the opportunity to really become involved in a movie had yet to present itself, it seemed at points to be just out of reach, like her fingertips were grazing the side of it but it slipped by her tauntingly.

BIOGRAPHY

I. Born as the first and only child, everyone would except him to be a spoiled brat, instead, he was far from being treated like a little prince – even when his behaviour tells otherwise. With the father – employee of the Dawnlights’ company – who left bigger amount of his payment in the till of his favourite casino than on the family’s dining counter, and the mother, who found more pleasure at the bottom of the bottle of wine, the little Zay hardly found the affection and role models inside the walls of their rent.

II. The lack of attention made him looking for it from other sources; roaming around on the busy roads alone, trying to sneak into the hearts of random citizens, or even acting as a little brother for the heir of his father’s employers. It was easy to recognize from the start he is not suitable for the model lifestyle City of Iron requires; he early developed the smarts for streets but always being uninterested with high-tech innovations or at least his studies, showing the only future the metropolis can offer him is military service.

III. The more money the father lost, the more Zay needed to get somewhere else if he wanted to reach adulthood; the people on the streets turned from friends to potential victims. Thanks to the need, practice and charm, he became one of the most efficient and skilled pickpocket of the district. However, spending more and more time in the underground led him towards better organized criminals than those who just held a knife to his throat when he gave them less of the loot they expected. The favours they asked for were much riskier than ever before but also way more profitable he would have been a fool to turn down. Zay did not believe in anything but “forward”, thinking he did not own anything to lose: his family has been rotten since the beginning, his freedom seemed just as fake as everything in the city and only legal occupation within his reach was offered by recruitment offices. His biggest fault was creating the thought if he could climb out from the pit his parents dug, they would not be able drag him back. He did not make any mistake other than being born into that household where they grabbed and beat him below his father’s feet as a punishment for all the debt he owed their boss. Zay could laugh at their naiveté expecting their actions to move anything inside his father if he was not trying to hold onto his worthless life and hatred towards this hell on earth. They told him he is lucky their boss is a noble soul giving them only a friendly reminder of his father’s dues.

Everything must end once, one way or another, and his life was finished right that night. As soon as he could get up and crawl into a cab, he reluctantly typed an address into the navigation system of the self-driving vehicle, just a block away from one of his acquaintance; clearing someone’s whole existence from every official record was hardly a challenge for him, but paying the price for this kind of service is for someone like Zay, who always pays with favour. Still, even with a greater debt his father has ever been, he has never felt more alive at this moment than ever before.

V. After successfully leaving behind the city he hated deep from the veins, his first convoy ride led to City of Dust, not even trying to test if he had the patience for all those religious idiots in the Wheats he despises as much as high-tech sex toys.

Although, his primary reason to get to this place he already found a hellhole at first sight was not because it offered the less nerve-wracking lifestyle from the two: he knew, with patience he would eventually run into his not-related-by-blood brother from different times, who always lived in his memory as an untainted, selfless soul. When their paths crossed again in this new milieu, the captain offered him a place on his side as a pirate: not the life he would ever wish for, but the one he had before was not one either. He had to realize soon their views are far different, yet the crew is the closest thing to what he can call home.

In 2008, I was taking Advanced Writing Practicum with a particularly flamboyant and fantastic professor at the end of my freshman year at college. I had just recovered from a tough first semester with a super-serious-Jesuit writing professor and a huge dickwad of an Ancient Philosophy professor. This piece is incredibly corny and perhaps getting dated too, but at the time, I was proud of my writing. Fortunately for me, while it appears to be missing from all my back-ups, I uploaded it on livejournal (dear lord I’m old--where all the ladies in their late 20s be at?). Where has the Touchy-Feely Man Gone: Masculinity Confined and Shaped by Society’s External Forces

Adrenaline and pure excitement takes over tired, cramped limbs, the feeling of winning permeates every air particle, and all that you can hear is, “We won! We won!!” Teammates run towards each other, grabbing each other’s laughing faces, their mouths open in astonishment and glee, happiness written into their eyes. Limbs tangled around each other, men piling on top of each other, the footballers amidst celebration show no inhibition. These are men, men whom the world exemplifies as the “truly masculine” with their incredible finesse, skill, talent. Yet amongst the very sport that defines them as masculine men, they sing, they cry, they embrace, they carry each other in their arms, they kiss each other on the cheeks and lips. They candidly display emotion and love in front of millions of people, supporters and rivals alike. The image is different but touching: men are not afraid to truly express themselves with each other and with the world.

Football (or soccer, as the Americans call it) is considered to be a masculine sport around the world, a sport where its players best portray the manly man image. But interestingly enough, it is also a sport in which its players show the widest range of emotion. In society today, there is a perceived concept that masculine men do not show emotion. While football seems to cross that boundary, excuse the behavior that is often not praised or encouraged, and somehow redefine a broad yet dominant concept of masculinity, this is just one sport in which men can express themselves more freely than elsewhere. But masculinity is much more complex than everyday men merely appearing aloof and withholding emotions on the inside. Experts and researchers say masculinity is a hybrid of social construction, historical and traditional definitions passed down through time, and cultural demands. All three ultimately create a mirage of stereotypes and the socially acceptable image that men should follow. More accurately, the socially acceptable image of masculinity is what we refer to as hegemonic masculinity. Though many societies and cultures around the world hold similar views on masculinity, America holds a certain ideology of masculinity that opposes anything resembling its anti-thesis, femininity, and other deviating identities like homosexuality¹. Anything that goes beyond the code of “socially acceptable” masculinity shocks us and leaves us perplexed. As a boy grows into manhood, he learns and follows the hegemonic code of masculinity, which his home, his homosocial enactment with other males, the media, and sports enforces but such factors also concurrently suppress a more intimate, alternative form of masculinity. These external factors ultimately contribute to a mostly American fear of any male behavior that may transcend heteronormativity. We all have some stereotypically influenced perception of how men should act and how men should behave. Michael S. Kimmel, a sociologist whose field focuses on men and masculinity, argues that in society, the dominant culture, “white culture,” holds significant power. From this concept, he states that our collective perceptions come from “the hegemonic definition of manhood [which] is a man in power, a man with power, and a man of power” (57). The language fits perfectly: dominant masculinity equates to power, having power, showing power. Psychologist Robert Brannon has summarized what manhood should basically be: “No sissy stuff!”—Men have nothing to do with anything that suggests femininity, “Be a big wheel”—masculinity equates power, success, wealth, and status, “Be a sturdy oak”—never show emotion, for boys do not cry, and lastly, “Give ‘em Hell”—men are daring and aggressive (58). The four rules stated are the “elements” that men desperately, vainly, chivalrously try to measure up, and ultimately makes masculinity a “relentless test.” Not all men try to live up to this narrow idea of masculinity but many who do, find it almost impossible to achieve. Though it is impossible to achieve, society continues to firmly code, imprint, and enforce messages of hegemonic masculinity. In society, the most popular modes of enforcing the macho male ideology are through the media and sports but the first place that prepares boys to become “men” would be at home amongst his parents. Richard L. Meth, Director of the School of Family Studies at the University of Connecticut, comments that boys need to “develop the acute…ability to discriminate between masculine and feminine behavior, and typically avoid anything associated with femininity” (11). In order to acquire the ability as Meth states, Kimmel remarks that a boy starts by “renouncing his identification with deep emotional attachment to his mother and then replacing her with the father as the object of identification” (59). This is the beginning of the social upbringing that effects boys’ perception of masculinity and femininity: the family strives to emasculate boys so they take flight from the feminine (the mother) and embrace the masculine (the father) to affirm themselves as real men. The detachment from dependence leads him to believe that he has to be consistently strong, independent, and confident, or else he would be laughed at, teased, and considered “not manly.”² This social upbringing leads most boys to see femininity as the antithesis of masculinity. The fear of being branded as “unmanly” is not lessened by external forces such as the media, sports, and the expectations and scrutiny of other men and even women to some extent. There is no better way to truly demonstrate one’s maleness than in front of other men. Meth points out that “boys often like to boast about any kind of sexual activity, in part to inform their peers of their progress but also as a means of validating their emerging manhood” (24). As stated, during childhood and adolescence, boys must not only learn how to separate themselves from their mothers, but they must also learn how to assert themselves over woman. The easiest way is to share or boast about sexual experiences with the other sex. But it is not only boys; men, well into their adulthood, may also insist on holding onto their bragging rights about their sexual progress regarding women. Meth singles out boasting about sexual performance but Kimmel also notes that men can boast pretty much about any accomplishment that “parade[s] the markers of manhood—wealth, power, status, sexy women” so they could “improve their ranking on the masculine social scale” (61). Though bragging may be done in good play or fun, the obsession with proving potency in sex and performance marks the beginning of heteronormativity, in which dominating the feminine is the norm for men. When a man does not boast about his sexual activity as much as some may expect, there is speculation concerning his “hetero” reputation. The true test of maleness determines the rules of expected male behavior but at the same time, it makes room for immense competition with other men, ridiculous amounts of machismo talk, and most importantly, fear of failure, fear of not being seen as a real man. In our society, it is not rare that many people mix up the terms that label the different types of relationships between men: homosocial, homoerotic, and homosexual. Homosocial merely relates to the social interaction between men (i.e. playing sports together, hanging out with each other, etc). Homoerotic involves desire for other men, which society often leads men to believe that such desire is feminine and may even grow into homosexual tendencies. Bob Pease, professor and researcher in the field of Self and Society and Men and Masculinities, suggests that “one of the main obstacles preventing more intimate relationships between men is homophobia—the fear of being, or appearing to be, gay is deeply embedded in Western culture” (qtd in Singleton 10). Psychoanalytic historian, Geoffrey Gorer, supports Pease’s claim: “The lives of most American men are bounded, and their interests daily curtailed by the constant necessity to prove to their fellows, and to themselves, that they are not sissies, not homosexuals,” (qtd in Kimmel 63). The constant need to prove this fact is the reason why we hear the phrase, “Oh, but I’m straight” or “Oh, but I’m not gay or anything” so often from men. Bounded by what Gorer calls the constant necessity to be straight, homosexuality becomes the “negation of masculinity” as social scientist Bob Connell puts it (qtd in Sabo 103). Not all boys may find the need to assert “straightness” but most boys in America grow up to believe that masculinity equates homophobia. From the fear of being not manly enough, homoeroticism and homosexuality become affiliated with femininity. The worst part is that this irrational fear has obstructed men from truly sharing their inner feelings and thoughts with each other because they are afraid that they would cross the boundary from homosocial to homoerotic and/or homosexual. The masculine code often enforces the competitive drive in which men resort to fulfill in sports. Aggression, rivalry, and dominance; sports is the ticket to being masculine. If showing off in front of other men is the true test of maleness, playing a sport is the ultimate action that would construct a rock-solid image of manhood. Dominating a game of a head-to-head sport and succeeding as the winner is an achievement that most men want, not just to show that they are athletically talented but to also show that they have acquired some unnamed, unspoken token of maleness. In Messner’s “Becoming 100 percent straight”, he argues that among the competitive spirit, men use sports as an act of what Herbert Marcuse calls, “the sublimation of homoerotic desire into an aggressive, violent act” (183). Transferring sexual desire into violence is acceptable because the world of sports has established itself as an arena of aggression and competitive drive³. Messner claims that ” for a closeted gay man, “the decision to construct his identity largely within sports was to step into a fiercely heterosexual/masculine closet that would hide what he saw as his ‘true’ identity” but for straight men, it was like “stepping out into an entire world of heterosexual privilege” (185). This theory of sublimation relates back to the fact that we live in a heteronormative world, a world that accentuates “normalcy”. There are many exceptions to this case because most men find sports as a means for them to prove their athletic abilities and talent. They might engage in sports to show their aggressive, daring side, a side that is enforced in the hegemonic male ideology but not always to perform expectations of a hyper-heterosexual identity. If our world is of heterosexual privilege, insisting that male behavior should replicate heteronormativity, then American films from the past century are doing their job: emphasizing straightness among male relationships. Film critic, Joan Mellen, notes that in movies where two male protagonists collaborate together (i.e. Butch Cassidy and the Sundance Kid, 1969), they may prefer each other’s company yet they “indulge in excessive display of machismo to convince everyone that despite their exclusively male grouping they are really heterosexual” (qtd in Doty 45). Excessive displays may include verbal banter, competitive insults, or any teasing behavior that would result in what cultural critic Anthony Easthrope identifies as “explicit antagonism between two masculine egos [to] cover the implicit male bond” (qtd in Doty 45). The homosocial relationship is purely friendly, a positive relationship that helps men connect with each other. But as Gorer and Pease claims, American society has conditioned us to believe a homosocial bond between two men might border too much on erotic intimacy that could be potentially homoerotic and/or homosexual. Not to mention, when there are no obvious male friendships in televised or film media, the male figure is often portrayed as the quintessence of “male self-reliance…often referred to as ‘rugged individualism’” (Doty 44). The male is either independent, battling adversaries on his own or if he has a fellow male comrade, he must not be “too” friendly. The issue at hand is that our culture distorts homosocial, homoerotic, and homosexual together, making no distinction when they all have different definitions. Though motion pictures focus more on the attempts to not convey male-male friendships as anything but straight, we as an audience, have a homophobic temptation to sexualize nonexistent homoerotic aspects in a homosocial relationship due to our inability to differentiate. Homophobia is one of the main factors that affect homosocial relationships but competition is also another contributing factor. Clinical and Organizational Psychologist, Robert S. Pasick, states, “As boys, men were taught to view other boys as potential competitors, which rendered close friendship very difficult to sustain. We came to see friendship between men in win-lose terms” (117). Competitiveness is one of the main attributes of hegemonic masculinity (look at sports) so it becomes hard for men, who are conditioned by the need to appear invulnerable, powerful, and in control, to have a relationship with other men who are potential rivals or competitors. Pasick argues that this obsession with competition also manifests in men’s excessive devotion to work. In the job setting, men with the drive to compete and achieve “are hesitant to place trust in others, lest they get taken advantage of” (120). The work setting is the place where men must be cautious of others for this is the place that determines their financial and economic success. Whether it is sports or on the job, men’s aggressive spirit continues to run the course of their lives. Once again, the hegemonic code, upheld by society, obstructs men from successfully seeking closer friendships with other men. The main underlying issue with hegemonic male ideology is that our government, our social norms, our culture imposes hetero behavior: men like women; women like men; that is the way things work around here. Alternative identities such as homosexuality do not co-exist with the hetero-structure of our society and makes us uncomfortable. Sixteenth century essayist, Michel de Montaigne, stated, “…the customs and practices of life in society sweep us along. Most of my doings are governed by example…I was led there, brought to it by external considerations” (275). During a young boy’s childhood, he learns from his parents that there is no better example than his own father. At school, he follows his fellow male friends; he watches them as they watch him. He may meet a boy who accidentally catches his eye, and he, distraught by his attraction to another boy, rashly turns to sports, because everybody else has taught him that it is the “manly” activity. From sports to work, he sees that in order to achieve, he must have the same competitive drive as other men. By the time the boy is a man, he has already been immersed in a media culture that establishes the identity of the 100 percent straight, successful, confident, aggressive male. “We think of manhood as innate,” Kimmel states but as innate as maleness is, Montaigne has pointed out that there are external forces that condition its development, its identity, its essence (51). While some may deviate from the stereotypes enforced in these “ external considerations,” most men believe that “what he wears, how he talks, how he walks, what he eats, is a coded mannerism to show the world that no one could ever get the ‘wrong idea’ about him” (Kimmel 64). The wrong idea is the fear of being branded as gay, the fear of not being “manly” enough. It is a fear that has grown into men’s hesitation to form a healthy homosocial relationship with other men and has manifested itself in men’s exaggerated replication of societal standards. These external forces have become more than examples; they have become the “how to be a man” rulebook for men to follow. Though we may believe that society has been uptight about male expression for centuries, men have not always been like that. John Ibson, American Cultural Studies Professor at California State University Fullerton, compiled photos from the Civil War to the 1950s in Picturing Men: A Century of Male Relationships in Everyday American Photography. His book records how men once touched each other with no inhibition: men sat on each others’ laps, held hands, embraced, expressing not always erotic but platonic love for each other. What has happened so that the past expresses more male intimacy than modern society? Eric Anderson, writer at Outsports.com, proposes that as society grows increasingly aware of homosexuality, we have concurrently become more homophobic and in turn, men have become wary that they may be seen as homosexuals (par 5). The thought is depressing but perhaps it is true. The more we know homosexuality exists, the more we overanalyze simple platonic gestures as homoerotic. Though some may argue that we have become fearful of alternative identities, at least we know them. With awareness and knowledge, we can fight for alternative identities and against an embedded irrational fear of ideologies that deviate from our hegemonic code. But there is hope for the male identity in American modern society. There is hope that we will bring back the not-as uptight outlook on platonic male-to-male affection. Maybe we do see male intimacy. Maybe some might be more paranoid today than in the past. But maybe, through football, where male camaraderie in celebration has already been established within its game, we can continue to reshape and remold the modern male identity. Montaigne stated that society’s external forces heavily influence our beliefs, in this case, concerning masculinity, but according to Diane Barthel, Associate Professor of Sociology at State University of New York, “The meaning of masculinity…is of society. It can be altered, shaped and molded” (153). Because we are part of society, we construct society just as much society constructs us. Today, there are boys and men who are not afraid to display signs of affection with each other. There are male groups where men are encouraged to open up and share their emotions and thoughts with each other. The modern male image is slowly changing and transforming: more men are confident enough to be openly friendly with his comrades without being ashamed or afraid of other’s opinions. America may still be uptight and paranoid about the changing image of masculinity. But through time, through our contribution to social construction, through social construction conditioning us in return, masculinity will gradually become a collective embrace of a less fearful, a less stereotype-dominant, a more open, a more intimate male identity.

¹ Other cultures around the world do hold traditional roles for men but those men are not as constricted by the fear that they would be seen as a homosexual as American men are. But that is not to say men in other cultures are not confined or influenced to act in a certain “hetero” way as American men are. ² Freud calls it the, “Oedipal complex” in which if boys do not learn how to separate themselves from their mothers, they would soon affiliate with the love and desire their mothers have for their fathers. So instead, the emotional detachment from their mothers is encouraged so that boys would replicate their father’s heterosexual love for their mothers, which symbolizes women for the boys. The desired effect is so that boys would learn to desire women and not men. ³ In this context, the sublimation that takes places refers to a man-on-man or team sport in which physical contact between men occurs (i.e. mainly basketball, American football, European football, hockey, water polo). There are many exceptions like archery, track, cross country, high jump, javelin, swimming, and more that do enforce the competitive drive in men but are not sports in which men might use as means to transfer homoerotic tendencies into aggressive acts.

I’m A Salesman

  I want to admit something here. This first paragraph of this piece was the last one I wrote for it. And in the next paragraph, which was originally the first of this writing, I think you’ll begin to learn why I’ve added this introduction. I’ve done it simply because I want to stress a couple of points and I don’t know where else to do so within this composition. First, let’s respect rather than defund our police. They care about us. They keep us safe. Yes, sometimes like everyone else they make mistakes, but in their field of endeavor outlandish mistakes can’t be tolerated. And second, in my opinion all this “group” business is detrimental to all lives in America and across the world. We’re born as individuals, we should live as individuals. Sometimes however it seems we think we need to live the lives of others as well as our own.    

Let me apologize in advance for what I’m guessing will be a rather choppy and unstructured prose piece. Like all Americans I’m very concerned at this current time. In my opinion our nation faces three great immediate challenges: one, the coronavirus, two, warranted peaceful protests, and three, unwarranted violence disguised as protest.

I’m a salesman. And I never was very good at composition. But I have two “special problems” in regard to what’s taking place in America today. I’m sure everyone has their own opinions and fears concerning the current pandemic and violence. I have two which are especially bothersome to me. They both concern the upheaval sparked in our society by the gross police over-reaction toward someone who’d apparently committed a minor offense. And like everyone else, I’m also fearful of the pandemic, but this current writing will express two wishes I have concerning our present state of societal unrest. Again, my apologies to anyone who reads this written piece to its end. I’m not much at writing. I’m a salesman, and, I believe, a great example of the so-called “common man”.

I’m sure you know by now that “the city” has a new mayor. Well, he contacted me a few days ago and asked if I’d write what he called “a common man’s take” on the current situation in The United States. He said he’d read about my brief appearance in Joseph Same’s “The Same Tapes” book, and therefore knew that at least for a while I’d been both a salesman and someone with a minor drinking problem. I told him I was still in sales, but had stopped drinking alcohol completely. I also said I’d undertake his task. Thus, what follows now is my so-called “take”.

Despite the claim of equality as an ultimate goal, there really are two other, and in my opinion, far more important desired outcomes sought by those now imposing fear, chaos, and anarchy across America. And the first of those is a seemingly universal effect which is always present in every questionable search for societal change. A struggle begins when a certain individual or group is singled out as having been the target of some sort of mistreatment. The apparent offenders are then lambasted in almost all the current media formats, and are promoted as haters of all such people who don’t happen to be white and male. But what is lost in this mirage which is then presented as clarity, is that the oldest hatred and abuse known to mankind is being promoted again, i.e. the working middle class of every particular nation is evil, and although its members do the work which keeps all societies functioning, those people are, as some have called them, deplorable.

And the second sought for result in any form of societal unrest is most likely a scenario which is not even understood by most of those engaged in that unrest. It’s the attempt to somehow pit the two extreme wings (left versus right – communism versus fascism) of the political spectrum against each other in the sick hope that eventually some sort of national or even worldwide conflict will emerge from their engagement against each other. And if we could take the time to learn from history rather than attempt to downplay or rewrite it, perhaps we’d realize that the same scenario which sparked World War Two (far left versus far right) could occur here in the United States. But truthfully, it’s been only within a few hundred years that radical isms have been given names; before that we could make a case that the same scenarios which led to WWII were present in societies then, but were disguised by various dictators, tyrants, monarchists who sought to further evil rather than good, and sometimes even figures from outside the realm of politics who gained control of certain nations for a while.

Nonetheless, we can rest assured, all mortals who once lived, or who live still within time’s scope, carried or carry their actions and non-actions with them as crosses to bear as they navigated or still do navigate through the years granted them by a force so powerful it’s time’s only inhibitor. And as history has unfolded, many controllers, and many organizers and reorganizers have vied for the conscience of the moment. And they’ve had a lot of answers for problems which most often have faded away with time’s passing, or else have been found out as not having been as significant as had first been believed. Thus the challenge for mortals in regard to time has always been the search for appropriate and safe actions and reactions in response to changes wrought by its passage.

So, as we speak of the current situation of time in America we must admit that rioters can shout and threaten. And they can tear down statues of people who long ago lived according to the social mores of their time. But nonetheless, time always wins in all disputes. And it wins because it features fleeting lifetimes lived temporally. And fleeting temporal lifetimes end quickly, and then enter the realm of the eternal.

And frankly, if we wish to live as best we can temporally, then we dare not defund or eliminate police forces! It seems incomprehensible that in this day and age some individuals would actually prefer to have a society in which all types of lawlessness could thrive.

I would urge anyone who thinks our nation will be better off without police to try to envision what such a scenario would entail. Rapists, murderers, thieves, and all types of lawbreakers would have a free hand to terrorize everyone – everywhere. And for victims of crimes, it would come as a shock when they called their police department only to find it had been eliminated in an effort to appease certain radicals who themselves might someday need police protection.

But certainly police officers can be trained better than they are currently. And certainly we can expect that police will treat all Americans with respect, and grant them all the rights afforded them under the law; but then we must also hope that all Americans will likewise afford the police the respect they deserve. And let’s not forget that many police officers have already been hurt or killed in violence tied to the recent mistake made by one of their own.

But now I have a very simple, yet sincere favor which I’m going to ask of the National Football League. I know it’s something which will involve a lot of money. Yes, it will involve a lot of money to people who already have a lot of money; or at least who should have a lot of it unless, as someone I once knew used to say, “money burns a hole in their pockets.”

As a show of respect for, and in solidarity with America’s middle class which has been the unfortunate recipient of massive condemnation hurled at it by various groups, politicians, current and former professional athletes, and haters of civil liberty, I think the NFL should cancel the 2020 season. Now of course there’s another very real reason why this action could be taken, i.e. the national pandemic; but frankly, I fear professional sports, and especially professional football are fanning the flames of racial anxiety in this nation. I know that I for one am not going to enjoy being told by a bunch of twenty or thirty something millionaires what a rotten and disgusting individual I am simply because I was born white. And also, when we single out one racial group for acknowledgement via song prior to the beginning of a game, we short change all other ethnicities in the nation, and mock the “inclusiveness” which many are now trying to say is needed between all racial and ethnic groups in America. I think the NFL needs to give some serious thought to the non-field problems it’s now become so much involved in, otherwise, in 2020 professional football may be playing with fire rather than with game balls.  

And, maybe the NFL will also face a crisis in regard to the names of its teams. Certainly certain ethnic groups will not wish to be offended by various monikers. And, who knows, down the road perhaps animal rights groups will also protest the teams named as animals and birds. And all of this will take place while the United States of America, guided by leftist politicians, will use the fact that its populace is comprised of diverse cultures and ethnic backgrounds as a reason for division and racism, rather than for the melding together of one great American people.

Tallo sighed as he entered the females’ room, Enix was sitting on her bed seemingly doing some homework with a couple of notebooks open in front of her, scribbling something and checking her phone. When she noticed her fellow flying-type she subtly pointed at her roommate’s bed and made a gesture lowering her hands. He just nodded.

He approached Shira’s bed where the meercle was just laying down sideways, her hooves flexing and knees curling to her chest. She was wearing only her tube top bra and shorts and he could see a couple of dark bruises on her back and her right shoulder.

“Hey” He called out casually, then stood there a bit awkwardly, running a hand through his hair “Uh… so, how are you feeling?”

The girl sighed and carefully rolled over her good shoulder “…Still can’t move my arm very well” She grimaced “Hi Tallo”

Her skin ached. Her muscles ached. Every time she moved it was as if those same spots burned.

He walked over to the other side of her bed so she didn’t have to roll, seeing as she didn’t mind much her current appearance in front of him, and sat at the edge of her bed “And what did the SAMU people said?  Couldn’t they heal you with heal pulse or some shit?” He asked confused.

Her expression relaxed “They did help actually, it was hurting a lot more before and the bruises looked worse, all purple and swollen, there was even some blood because the rocks had cut the skin” She explained.

Tallo frowned slightly, he could only imagine what it must’ve felt like, taking a direct hit from a stone edge like that might as well be similar to getting shot.

“For now they just told me to keep rest, eat well and all that, it’ll take some days until I’m recovered. I bet this wouldn’t happen if I knew some damn synthesis” The girl mentioned “It’s fine though, I’m mostly just tired anyway, anything else I’m past it” She closed her eyes and yawned.

“Hmmm…” The boy looked around a bit and turned to Enix who was engrossed in her phone “You know… Siegard is still feeling pretty frustrated about this whole thing”

She opened her eyes and frowned now “You mean like guilty?” That would explain why she hadn’t seen his face again since she was taken to the SAMU after the battle. She clicked her tongue “Ahh tell him not to, he’s an idiot. This was just an accident we were battling, what did he expect? I don’t hold anything against him, tell him not to overthink it that much…”

Tallo chuckled “Alright I’ll try, but still he feels bad about hurting you, he’s been kinda moping and stressing around, the practice dummies sure feel it” He placed a hand on hers and let out one of his characteristic smiles “You take care and focus on getting back on your hooves, Shinning Mirage, and if you need anything you know you can just gimme a shout”

“Sure, I could use some help from the great Multipass’ leader” She smirked. The osubame got up and turned ready to leave, though the girl rolled out slightly one last time to call him out “Actually Tallo… if you could straight up tell Sieg to come here so we can talk and he can see I’m fine that would be grand”

He stood at the door and nodded, waving to Enix as well “Gotcha”

This was it, the final event of the day and it just so happened to be the Detriment Duel. James stared from the sideline, fully entranced on the battle. For once (and finally!) Shira was representing The Elementario, while one of his teammates, Sunney, was representing Multipass. The Legemd member had been surprisingly eliminated already.

The two females where really duking it out in the field, Sunney had type disadvantage being a Marilli, but compensated it with a quite fantastic series of icicle spear and trying to put off her opponent with a mist she conjured up from the very humidity of the air. The Meercle on her part did her best tossing some energy balls and trying to get close enough to deliver a kick, swiftly avoiding some icicles.

“Hmmm Sunney really was prepared for this” Someone mentioned towards him, the Rukushio turned to see his own team leader himself looking at the battle with genuine interest, a slight smile on his lips “Who said anything about no field advantage, look at how she mastered that mist”

“Indeed” James nodded “And she’s got Shira’s bulldoze locked as well because changing her type would mean bad news for that type match-up”

“Sure, she doesn’t need to change types though” The Osubame offered casually with a hand gesture “But I get the feeling she’s gotten too used to that lately so it’s kind of out of her comfort zone… it doesn’t help that she can’t get close either, but on the other hand that technique really tires out Sunney”

“Hmmmm… who are you rooting for?” James suddenly asked curiously.

“My gal of course…” He chuckled and looked up at the scoreboard, James let out a tiny sigh.

The girl took air, shook her head a bit and stepped out to the field as Tallo gave her a thumbs up. The tall girl immediately looked around with a grin waving her hand and greeting the public that cheered, clapped and called out to her, she nodded in acknowledgement at them.

The boy in question followed the same path as her to the center field, eyes closed with a confident smirk, extending out both arms and doing raising gestures with his hands as the students yelled and acclaimed him. “I know” She replied sharply, though not angry and her expression then softened to prove the point “It’s dangerous, it’s scary, incredibly so but… Kalos is my heart and my home, and if it’s hurting it hurts me too. All the people, students as young as us giving their lives out there, the chaos” She looked down

“And we’re just here doing nothing…” He added with a heavy sigh “I understand how you feel, being so impotent, like you just want to do something” She nodded.

The night was quiet for a while as they both settled in a thoughtful and comfortable silence. After a few minutes she shivered lightly from the air and he sighed, speaking again “Hey, if we end up being recruited then let’s make sure we show Kalos what the DZA is all about”

A smile graced her face once more “Always” She replied proudly.

He stood up and helped her get up as well “For now let’s stick with training the Basic and Advanced students, we need to leave behind some heirs after all”

Shira brought a hand to her mouth trying to stifle some laughter “That sounded kinda wrong”
